INTRODUCTION: Double-filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP) has been utilized for immunomodulation in kidney transplantation. Anticoagulation is important to maintain circuit patency during DFPP. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) with systemic heparin anticoagulation during DFPP in kidney transplant recipients. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted to compare the efficacy and safety of RCA (RCA-DFPP) to systemic heparin anticoagulation (Hep-DFPP) for DFPP among kidney transplant recipients in a single tertiary center. RESULTS: A total of 112 sessions of DFPP were performed for 23 subjects, of which 62 sessions were RCA-DFPP and 50 sessions were Hep-DFPP. There were 13 sessions (11.6%) of premature circuit clotting, 10 sessions (16.1%) for RCA-DFPP and 3 sessions (6.0%) for Hep-DFPP (P = .10). All premature circuit clotting episodes occurred in subjects who underwent DFPP through a vascular catheter. Premature circuit clotting was associated with the use of a vascular catheter (odds ratio [OR] 14.2, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.7-73.7; P < .01) and high postfilter ionized calcium (OR 12.7, 95% CI 1.4-112.5; P < .01). There was no major bleeding event. Hep-DFPP was associated with higher occurrence of hypocalcemia (OR 1.1, 95% CI 1.0-1.2; P < .01) and metabolic acidosis (OR 1.4, 95% CI 1.2-2.0; P = .04), while hypomagnesemia was more common for RCA-DFPP (OR 2.9, 95% CI 1.1-7.4; P = .03). CONCLUSION: Amongst kidney transplant patients who receive DFPP therapy, RCA-DFPP may be comparable to Hep-DFPP for the maintenance of circuit patency. Functioning vascular access is vital in avoiding premature clotting of the circuit. Close monitoring of electrolyte imbalances and coagulopathy related to DFPP is recommended.

Pathways for microplastics to aquatic ecosystems include agricultural runoff, urban runoff, and treated or untreated wastewater. To better understand the importance of each pathway as a vector for microplastics into waterbodies and for mitigation, we sampled agricultural runoff, urban stormwater runoff, treated wastewater effluent, and the waterbodies downstream in four regions across North America: the Sacramento Delta, the Mississippi River, Lake Ontario, and Chesapeake Bay. The highest concentrations of microplastics in each pathway varied by region: agricultural runoff in the Sacramento Delta and Mississippi River, urban stormwater runoff in Lake Ontario, and treated wastewater effluent in Chesapeake Bay. Material types were diverse and not unique across pathways. However, a PERMANOVA found significant differences in morphological assemblages among pathways (p < 0.005), suggesting fibers as a signature of agricultural runoff and treated wastewater effluent and rubbery fragments as a signature of stormwater. Moreover, the relationship between watershed characteristics and particle concentrations varied across watersheds (e.g., with agricultural parameters only being important in the Sacramento Delta). Overall, our results suggest that local monitoring is essential to inform effective mitigation strategies and that assessing the assemblages of morphologies should be prioritized in monitoring programs to identify important pathways of contamination.

INTRODUCTION: Double-filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP) may be used for immunomodulation in kidney transplant (KTx). While DFPP reduces plasma product exposure, risk of circuit clotting merits adequate anticoagulation. Regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) avoids the risks of systemic anticoagulation, but a protocol for RCA-DFPP is not previously widely described. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study involving adult (≥21 years old) KTx recipients who underwent RCA-DFPP from 2018 to 2020 to investigate efficacy and safety for an RCA protocol during DFPP in KTx recipients. RESULTS: Fifty-one (85%) of 60 RCA-DFPP sessions in 17 patients completed without circuit clotting. Circuit clotting was associated with high post-filter ionized calcium (28 vs. 3.7%, odds ratio 10.1, 95% CI 1.1-89.4, p = 0.037). Hypo- and hypercalcemia developed in 5 (8.3%) and 8 (13.3%) sessions, respectively, but no adverse effects were noted despite severe hypocalcemia in one. There was no significant change in pre- and post-RCA-DFPP sodium, bicarbonate, albumin, and platelet levels. With regards DFPP procedure, prolongation of prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) was observed following 38 (64.4%) and 12 (20.3%) sessions, respectively. Severely prolonged (>1.5 × upper limit normal) PT and aPTT were recorded in 2 sessions each. Expectedly, hypofibrinogenemia developed after 31 (51.7%) sessions: including 4 (6.7%) severe hypofibrinogenemia (<0.5 g/L). Two patients developed bleeding requiring blood product transfusion. The median total volume of fluids administered per session was 1.495 (1.373-1.612) L; post-RCA-DFPP significant weight gain of 0.5 (0-1.25) kg was noted. Diuretic was commenced or dose increased following 20 (33.3%) sessions for fluid balance management. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Protocol-based RCA for DFPP is feasible and safe in KTx recipients. However, DFPP-related coagulopathy can develop consequent to treatment; caution should be exercised for patients with bleeding risk. Close monitoring and management of the patients' electrolytes, especially hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia, and fluid status is recommended.

The Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) is a small, semi-anadromous fish native to the San Francisco Bay-Delta Estuary and has been declared as critically endangered. Their olfactory biology, in particular, is poorly understood and a basic description of their sensory anatomy is needed to advance our understanding of the sensory ecology of species to inform conservation efforts to manage and protect them. We provide a description of the gross morphology, histological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural features of the olfactory rosette in this fish and discuss some of the functional implications in relation to olfactory ability. We show that Delta Smelt have a multilamellar olfactory rosette with allometric growth. Calretinin immunohistochemistry revealed a diffuse distribution of olfactory receptor neurons within the epithelium. Ciliated, microvillous and crypt neurons were clearly identified using morphological and immunohistochemical features. The olfactory neurons were supported by robust ciliated and secretory sustentacular cells. Although the sense of smell has been overlooked in Delta Smelt, we conclude that the olfactory epithelium has many characteristics of macrosmatic fish. With this study, we provide a foundation for future research into the sensory ecology of this imperiled fish.

AIM: This study aims to investigate the effect of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) in maintaining the patency of arteriovenous (AV) access with recurrent thrombosis. METHODS: Following successful thrombectomy, 66 patients with recurrent thrombosis were included in the study. The primary, assisted primary and secondary patency rates of patients who received LMWH (n = 24) were compared with those who did not receive anticoagulant (n = 42) using Kaplan-Meier analysis. Cox-regression analysis was performed to investigate potential predictors of patency rates. RESULTS: The mean dose of enoxaparin used was 40 ± 13.1 mg or 0.74 ± 0.2 mg/kg daily for a median duration of 14 (IQR 7,28) days. The mean trough anti-Xa concentrations measured after two doses of LMWH was 0.17 ± 0.13 IU/mL. Kaplan-Meier analyses for mean primary, assisted primary and secondary patency rates of LMWH vs no anticoagulation groups were 149 (95% CI: 91 - 207) vs 87 (95% CI: 42-132) days (P < .006), 230 (95% CI: 142-320) vs 107 (95% CI: 62-150) days (P = .01) and 438 (299-579) vs 294 (95% CI: 197-392) days (P = .08) respectively. LMWH remained a significant protective predictor of primary (HR: 0.49; 95% CI: 0.25-0.86; P = .02) and assisted primary patency rates (HR: 0.51; 95% CI: 0.27-0.98; P = .04) after adjusting for patient age, access age, type of AV access, presence of peripheral vascular disease and haemoglobin levels. CONCLUSION: LMWH may improve short and mid-term patency rates for AV accesses with recurrent thrombosis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to report the outcomes of endovascular salvage of clotted arteriovenous (AV) accesses and to determine potential predictors of poor patency rates after thrombectomy. METHODS: Records of hemodialysis patients who underwent endovascular salvage of clotted AV access were reviewed retrospectively. Technical and clinical success rates, complication rates, and 3- and 6-month patency rates were determined. Multivariate analysis was performed to determine the predictors of patency after thrombectomy. RESULTS: A total of 294 patients underwent endovascular salvage of clotted AV access during the study period; 156 patients had arteriovenous fistula, whereas the remaining 138 were arteriovenous grafts (AVGs). The technical and clinical success rates were 96.3% and 93.2%; the major and minor complication rates were 0.7% and 9.9%. Post-thrombectomy primary, assisted primary, and secondary patency rates were 62.9%, 76.2%, and 77.6% at 3 months and 43.9%, 59.5%, and 61.6% at 6 months. The patency rates were significantly better for arteriovenous fistula than for AVG except for 6-month assisted primary and secondary patency. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that prior thrombosis within 90 days was significantly associated with loss of primary patency (hazard ratio [HR], 1.90; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.21-2.98; P < .01), assisted primary patency (HR, 2.42; 95% CI, 1.42-4.13; P < .01), and secondary patency (HR, 2.52; 95% CI, 1.40-4.53; P < .01). Having an AVG was also negatively associated with primary patency. CONCLUSIONS: Most clotted AV accesses can be salvaged by endovascular technique. Recurrent thrombosis within 90 days is associated with poor short- and long-term patency even after successful endovascular reinterventions.

The herbicides glyphosate, imazamox and fluridone are herbicides, with low toxicity towards fish and invertebrates, which are applied to waterways to control invasive aquatic weeds. However, the effects of these herbicides on natural isolates of phytoplankton and cyanobacteria are unknown. Three species of microalgae found in the San Francisco Estuary (SFE)/Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta (Delta) (Microcystis aeruginosa, Chlamydomonas debaryana, and Thalassiosira pseudonana) were exposed to the three herbicides at a range of concentrations in 96-well plates for 5-8 days. All three algal species were the most sensitive to fluridone, with IC50 of 46.9, 21, and 109 µg L-1 for M. aeruginosa, T. pseudonana and C. debaryana, respectively. Imazamox inhibited M. aeruginosa and T. pseudonana growth at 3.6 × 104 µg L-1 or higher, and inhibited C. debaryana growth at 1.0 × 105 µg L-1 or higher. Glyphosate inhibited growth in all species at ca. 7.0 × 104 µg L-1 or higher. Fluridone was the only herbicide that inhibited the microalgae at environmentally relevant concentrations in this study and susceptibility to the herbicide depended on the species. Thus, the application of fluridone may affect cyanobacteria and phytoplankton community composition in water bodies where it is applied.

AIM: Dysfunctional arteriovenous (AV) access remains a significant cause of morbidity and hospital admission for patients with end stage renal failure on haemodialysis. This study was performed to evaluate the impact of paclitaxel-coated Balloon (PCB) on the patency of AV access with recurrent stenoses. METHODS: We retrospectively studied haemodialysis patients who presented to our centre with recurrent AV access dysfunction and compared intervention-free patency using plain balloon versus PCB. RESULTS: A total of 147 patients were followed up longitudinally. Intervention-free patency was better following PCB compared to previous intervention using plain balloons (6.4 ± 5.8 versus 4.0 ± 3.7, P < 0.01). The 3- and 6-month patency rates after PCB were significantly better compared to standard plain angioplasty balloon: 69.4% versus 52.4%, P < 0.01 and 42.9% versus 15.6%, P < 0.01 respectively. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis of circuit patency demonstrated the superiority of PCB over plain balloon angioplasty in both arteriovenous fistula and arteriovenous graft (P < 0.01 and P = 0.01 respectively) although the patency of arteriovenous fistula remained significantly better than arteriovenous graft following interventions with PCB (P < 0.01). Age of AV access and the number of previous interventions were found to be significant predictors of patency following PCB intervention. CONCLUSION: Arteriovenous access intervention with PCB was shown to be superior compared to plain balloon in the treatment of both non-thrombosed and thrombosed AV accesses in our multi-ethnic population.

RESUMEN

A captive breeding programme was developed in 2008 for delta smelt Hypomesus transpacificus in reaction to dramatic population decline over several decades. We took 526 sub-adult captive-reared delta smelt and cultured them for 200 days without providing artificial food or water quality management to assess their performance once released in the wild. The results indicated captive-reared sub-adult delta smelt could survive in a semi-natural environment with uncontrolled water quality and naturally produced wild prey through spawning and into their post spawning phase.

The San Francisco Estuary (California, USA) had abundant pelagic fish in the late 1960s, but has few pelagic fish today. A primary cause for this decline in fish is thought to be a trophic cascade, triggered by declining phytoplankton. Here, we describe the changes in pelagic community structure of the San Francisco Estuary. Then, we examine whether changes in hydrodynamics due to freshwater exports, which increased exponentially beginning in 1967, in addition to the 1986 invasion by the clam Potamocorbula amurensis, explain the phytoplankton loss. Hydrodynamic variables were reconstructed back to 1956 using statistical models fit to, and cross-validated against, output from a hydrodynamic model. Then, we regressed mean summer/fall chlorophyll a-the season with the largest phytoplankton decline-against the reconstructed hydrodynamic variables and the presence/absence of P. amurensis for 1969-2014. The regression model, which explained 78% of the interannual variation in chlorophyll a, was then used to quantify the influence of P. amurensis and exports on chlorophyll a. Based on monitoring data, chlorophyll a declined 22-fold from 1969-2014, zooplankton declined 32-fold from 1972-2014, and pelagic fish declined 92-fold from 1968-2014. Averaged over 1990-2014, the chlorophyll a model ascribed an 88% decline in chlorophyll a to P. amurensis, a 74% decline to exports (at minimum), and a 97% decline to the combined influence of P. amurensis and exports (at minimum). Thus, the decline in pelagic productivity in the San Francisco Estuary has occurred largely due to the combined impacts of the P. amurensis invasion and increased freshwater exports.

AIM: Traditional apprenticeship model (AM) of teaching in invasive procedures such as temporary haemodialysis catheter (THDC) insertion can result in propagation of errors and complications. Simulation-based learning (SBL) offers standardization of skills and allows trainees to repeatedly practice invasive procedures prior to performing them on actual patient. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of first-, second- and third-year Nephrology Fellows from a tertiary teaching hospital from September 2008 to September 2015. The intervention group (n = 9) received simulation training in ultrasound-guided THDC placement. The historical control group (n = 12) received training through traditional AM. The primary and secondary outcomes were the immediate complications and success rates of THDC insertion. RESULTS: A total of 2481 THDCs were placed in 1787 patients. Success rate of internal jugular THDC placement for AM vs. SBL Fellow was 99.8% versus 100% (P = 0.90), while the success rate for femoral THDC placement was 99.6% versus 99.2% (P = 0.53). SBL Fellows reported fewer overall peri-procedure complications (8.3% vs. 11.2%, P = 0.02) and mechanical complications (1% vs. 2.4%, P = 0.02) compared to AM Fellows. The rate of reported technical difficulty was similar (7.5% vs. 9.2%, P = 0.17). After adjusting for side and site of THDC placement, body mass index and laboratory indices, THDC inserted by AM Fellows were independently associated with increased overall peri-procedure complications (OR = 1.396, 95% CI: 1.052-1.854, P = 0.02) and mechanical complications (OR = 2.481, 95% CI: 1.178-4.810, P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Simulation-based learning was associated with lower procedure related complications and should be an integral component in the teaching of procedural skills in Nephrology.

Abiotic factors like salinity are relevant to survival of pelagic fishes of the San Francisco Bay Estuary. We tested the effects of 4 parts per thousand (ppt) salinity increases on Delta Smelt (DS) in a laboratory experiment simulating salinity increases that might occur around the low-salinity zone (LSZ) (<6 ppt). Adult DS, fed 2% body mass per day, starting at 0.5 ppt [freshwater (FW)], were exposed to weekly step-increases of 4 ppt to a maximum of 10 ppt saltwater (SW) over 19 days, and compared to FW controls. DS (n = 12/treatment per sampling) were sampled at 24, 72, and 96 h (1, 3, and 4 days) post-salinity increase for analyses of hematocrit, plasma osmolality, muscle water content, gill chloride cell (CC) Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase (NKA) and apoptosis after being weighed and measured (n = 3 tanks per treatment). No apparent increase in length or weight occurred nor did a difference in survival. Following step-increases in SW, hematocrit increased over time. Other fish responses generally showed a pattern; specifically plasma osmolality became elevated at 1 day and diminished over 4 days in SW. Percent muscle water content (%) did not show significant changes. CCs showed increased NKA, cell size and apoptosis over time in SW, indicating that CCs turnover in DS. The cell renewal process takes days, at least over 19 days. In summary, DS are affected by salinities of the LSZ and ≤10 ppt, though they employ physiological strategies to acclimate.

Naturally-occurring and artificially-induced polyploids have been documented in various fish species but to date no comparison has been reported of the impacts of ploidy on fish biomarker responses to organic pollutants. This study describes effects of ploidy, gender, and dose on biliary fluorescent aromatic compound (FAC) concentrations, hepatic ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities in one of the most commonly cultured warm-water species, the African catfish Clarias gariepinus. Recently matured male and female diploid and triploid fish were intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected with 0, 5 or 25mg/kg benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and liver and gallbladder were sampled 48hr later. No significant differences were found between ploidies in bile concentrations of 7,8 dihydrodiolbenzo[a]pyrene (7,8D BaP), 1-hydroxybenzo[a]pyrene (1-OH BaP) or 3-hydroxybenzo[a]pyrene (3-OH BaP). However, concentrations of the biliary FACs did differ between males and females at different dose of injection with generally higher concentrations in females at the low dose of BaP and higher concentrations in males at the higher BaP concentration. Hepatic EROD activity did not exhibit gender-dependent difference, whereas it was significantly higher in triploids than diploids. GST activities were not significantly influenced by any of the tested factors. This work advanced our understanding of the role of ploidy, gender, and dose in biotransformation of pollutants in fish.

RESUMEN

The organochlorine pesticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) is an endocrine-disrupting compound (EDC) that has been banned by most countries for decades. However, it continues to be detected in nearly all humans and wildlife due to its biological and environmental persistence. The ovarian dysgenesis syndrome hypothesis speculates that exposure to EDCs during sensitive developmental windows such as early gonadal differentiation lead to reproductive disorders later in life. Yet, mechanisms by which DDT affects developing gonads remain unclear due to the inherent challenge of getting developmental exposure data from adults presenting with reproductive disease. The Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) is a valuable fish model for sex-specific toxicological studies due to its chromosomal sex determination, external embryonic development, short generation time, and extensively mapped genome. It is well documented that medaka exposed to DDT and its metabolites and byproducts (herein referred to as DDT+) at different developmental time points experience permanent alterations in gonadal morphology, reproductive success, and molecular and hormonal signaling. However, the overwhelming majority of studies focus primarily on functional and morphological outcomes in males and females and have rarely investigated long-term transcriptional or molecular effects. This review summarizes previous experimental findings and the state of our knowledge concerning toxic effects DDT + on reproductive development, fertility, and health in the valuable medaka model. It also identifies gaps in knowledge, emphasizing a need for more focus on molecular mechanisms of ovarian endocrine disruption using enhanced molecular tools that have become increasingly available over the past few decades. Furthermore, DDT forms a myriad of over 45 metabolites and transformation products in biota and the environment, very few of which have been evaluated for environmental abundance or health effects. This reinforces the demand for high throughput and economical in vivo models for predictive toxicology screening, and the Japanese medaka is uniquely positioned to meet this need.

Bleb leakage is a notorious complication of glaucoma filtration surgery which increases the risk of sight-threatening conditions. A 25-year-old female with severe bilateral juvenile open-angle glaucoma was treated for blebitis and exogenous endophthalmitis secondary to chronic bleb leak after undergoing XEN implantation, followed by multiple rounds of bleb needling, and augmented trabeculectomy. In the right eye, visual acuity was hand movement with cataract, intraocular pressure was 6 mmHg and the bleb was large, highly elevated from 10 to 1 o'clock, avascular, thin wall, and cystic with leaking points. Combined surgery of low-setting phacoemulsification and amniotic membrane transplantation without excising and manipulating the bleb was performed in the same setting. At postoperative 1 month, 6 months, and 1 year, her right vision had improved to 6/24, and the intraocular pressure was 12-14 mmHg, and the bleb leakage had resolved. This successful treatment was accomplished by maintaining the bleb's viability, preventing additional injury, and promoting wound healing.

Objective: To evaluate the feasibility, safety, and effectiveness of a comprehensive regional program, including the Minimally Invasive Recovery and Empowerment Care (MIREC) pathway, that can significantly reduce hospital stays after laparoscopic gastrectomy without increasing adverse events. Background: Cost-effectiveness and improving patient outcomes are crucial in providing quality gastric cancer care worldwide. Methods: To compare the outcomes of gastric cancer surgery using 2 different models of care within an integrated healthcare system from February 2012 to March 2023. The primary endpoint was the length of hospital stay. The secondary endpoints were the need for intensive care unit care, emergency room (ER) visits, readmission, reoperation, and death within 30 days after surgery. Results: There were 553 patients, 167 in the pre-(February 2012-April 2016) and 386 in the post-MIREC period (May 2016-March 2023). Perioperative chemotherapy utilization increased from 31.7% to 76.4% (P < 0.0001). Laparoscopic gastrectomy increased from 17.4% to 97.7% (P < 0.0001). Length of hospitalization decreased from 7 to 2 days (P < 0.0001), with 32.1% and 88% of patients discharged home on postoperative day 1 and postoperative day 2, respectively. When comparing pre- and post-MIREC, intensive care unit utilization (10.8% vs. 2.9%, P < 0.0001), ER visits (34.7% vs. 19.7%, P = 0.0002), and readmission (18.6% vs. 11.1%, P = 0.019) at 30 days were also considerably lower. In addition, more patients received postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy (31.4% to 63.5%, P < 0.0001), and the time between gastrectomy and starting adjuvant chemotherapy was also less (49-41 days; P = 0.002). Conclusion: This comprehensive regional program, which encompasses regionalization care, laparoscopic approach, modern oncologic care, surgical subspecialization, and the MIREC pathway, can potentially improve gastric cancer surgery outcomes. These benefits include reduced hospital stays and lower complication rates. As such, this program can revolutionize how gastric cancer surgery is delivered, leading to a higher quality of care and increased value to patients.

Spontaneous perinephric hematoma is an uncommon but serious condition that is typically caused by tumor hemorrhage or vascular disease such as polyarteritis nodosa. We describe a 78-year-old Chinese gentleman with underlying chronic kidney disease, renal cysts, non-obstructive renal stones, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and atrial fibrillation who was on rivaroxaban and clopidogrel. He developed spontaneous perinephric hematoma complicated by acute kidney injury, anemia, and myocardial infarction who underwent angioembolization and packed cell transfusion. He did not have further bleeding episodes, and his kidney function improved before discharge.

Understanding reproductive biology and performance of fish is essential to formulate effective conservation and management programs. Here, we studied reproductive strategies of female Delta Smelt Hypomesus transpacificus, an endangered fish species in the State of California, the United States, focusing on (1) better understanding their distribution pattern during the winter and spring spawning season at very fine scale to predict their possible spawning grounds and (2) assessing impacts of a recent, severe drought on their reproductive performance. We formulated our hypotheses as follows; (1) female Delta Smelt migrate to particular locations for spawning so that mature females can be frequently found in those locations throughout the spawning season and (2) reproductive performance of individual female fish declined during the drought. To test the first hypotheses, we analyzed relationships between water quality parameters and maturity/distribution pattern of Delta Smelt. Salinity better explained the distribution pattern of Delta Smelt at subadult and adult stages compared with water temperature or turbidity. Although there are some freshwater locations where mature Delta Smelt can frequently be found during the spawning season, Delta Smelt at the final maturation stage (Stage 5: hydration) and post spawners appeared to be widespread in the area where salinity was below 1.0 during the spawning season. Therefore, Delta Smelt could theoretically spawn in any freshwater locations, with more specific spawning requirements in the wild (e.g., substrate type and depth) still unknown. Delta Smelt, which experienced dry and critically dry conditions (the 2013 and 2014 year-classes), showed smaller oocytes, and lower clutch size and gonadosomatic index compared with the fish caught in a wet year (2011 year-class) at the late vitellogenic stage (Stage 4 Late), suggesting reproductive performance was negatively affected by environmental conditions during the drought.

Temperature and salinity often define the distributions of aquatic organisms. This is at least partially true for Delta Smelt, an imperiled species endemic to the upper San Francisco Estuary. While much is known about the tolerances and distribution of Delta Smelt in relation to these parameters, little is known regarding the temperature and salinity preferences of the species. Therefore, the temperature and salinity preferences of sub-adult Delta Smelt were investigated across a wide range of thermal (8-28 °C) and salinity (0-23 ppt) conditions. Replicates of ten fish were allowed to swim between two circular chambers with different temperature or salinity, and the distribution of fish between the chambers was recorded. We found that Delta Smelt showed no temperature preference below 15 °C, a modest aversion to the warmer tank from 15 to 28 °C, and a strong aversion to the warmer tank with elevated mortality at temperatures above 28 °C. Delta Smelt also preferred lower salinities, and this preference became more pronounced as salinity increased toward 23 ppt. These results indicate that Delta Smelt can tolerate high temperatures and salinities for a short time, and that their preferences for lower temperature and salinity strengthens as these variables increase.
