RESUMO

In normal old (Nold) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) persons, a high cognitive reserve (CR) makes them more resistant and resilient to brain neuropathology and neurodegeneration. Here, we tested whether these effects may affect neurophysiological oscillatory mechanisms generating dominant resting state electroencephalographic (rsEEG) alpha rhythms in Nold and patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to AD (ADMCI). Data in 60 Nold and 70 ADMCI participants, stratified in higher (Edu+) and lower (Edu-) educational attainment subgroups, were available in an Italian-Turkish archive. The subgroups were matched for age, gender, and education. RsEEG cortical sources were estimated by eLORETA freeware. As compared to the Nold-Edu- subgroup, the Nold-Edu+ subgroup showed greater alpha source activations topographically widespread. On the contrary, in relation to the ADMCI-Edu- subgroup, the ADMCI-Edu+ subgroup displayed lower alpha source activations topographically widespread. Furthermore, the 2 ADMCI subgroups had matched cerebrospinal AD diagnostic biomarkers, brain gray-white matter measures, and neuropsychological scores. The current findings suggest that a high CR may be related to changes in rsEEG alpha rhythms in Nold and ADMCI persons. These changes may underlie neuroprotective effects in Nold seniors and subtend functional compensatory mechanisms unrelated to brain structure alterations in ADMCI patients.

Trachystemon orientalis (L.) G. Don is a medicinal plant with beneficial effects on human health. Its antioxidant and phenolic compound content is higher than most natural plants. This is the first study on the cooking of this consumed plant. This study investigated how different cooking methods and times affect the antioxidant activity and phenolic compound content of Trachystemon orientalis (L.) G. Don. The Folin-Ciocalteu method (FCR), ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), copper-reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity were used to evaluate the antioxidant activity and total phenolic content (TPC). Phenolic compounds were also determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Microwave cooking, stir-frying and sous vide increased TPC and antioxidant activity (p<0.05). Steaming decreased TPC and antioxidant activity (p<0.05). It was determined that the best cooking method and time was stir-frying for 15 minutes (TPC, CUPRAC and FRAP values 45.18±3.91 mg GAE/g DW, 15559.39±106.90 mmol Troloks/g DW and 555.10±24.05 µmol Fe (II)/g DW, respectively). Raw Trachystemon orientalis (L.) G. Don was detected with caffeic acid (31.53±0.25 mg/100 g DW). New phenolic compounds (protocatechuic acid and p-coumaric acid) were formed by boiling, stir-frying, microwaving, and sous vide methods. In conclusion, regarding antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds of Trachystemon orientalis (L.) G. Don; the best cooking methods are microwave, stir-frying, and sous vide (p<0.05). The most wrong cooking method is steaming (p<0.05).

Food neophobia, known as an avoidance of the consumption of unknown foods, can negatively impact nutritional quality. In orthorexia nervosa, there is an excessive mental effort to consume healthy food. Individuals exhibiting symptoms of food neophobia and orthorexia nervosa may experience food restrictions. This study aimed to assess food neophobia levels and orthorexia nervosa tendencies among university students, investigate the potential association between the two constructs, and explore the effect of the demographic characteristics of the participants on the variables. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The study sample consisted of 609 students enrolled at Recep Tayyip Erdogan University. The data were collected through Google Forms using a sociodemographic information form, the Food Neophobia Scale, and the ORTO-11 scale. Ethics committee approval and institutional permission were obtained for the study. Of the students participating in the survey, 71.9% were female, 14.6% were classified as neophobic, and 47.1% had orthorexia nervosa symptoms. The mean scores from the Food Neophobia Scale (39.41 ± 9.23) and the ORTO-11 scale (27.43 ± 5.35) were in the normal range. Food neophobia was significantly higher among those who did not consume alcohol. Orthorexia nervosa symptoms were significantly more common among married people. In the correlation analysis, no significant relationship was found between age, food neophobia, and orthorexia nervosa. It can be said that food neophobia in this study is similar to in other studies conducted on university students. In addition, about half of the participants had symptoms of orthorexia nervosa. This result is higher compared to other studies conducted with university students. The findings of this study indicate that the participants care about the healthfulness of food.

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries is one of the most common childhood diseases. This study purposed to investigate the prediction capability of potential renal acid load (PRAL), salivary buffer capacity (SBC), and Healthy Eating Index (HEI) on children's dental caries. METHODS: The decay, missing, filing, and teeth for primary teeth (dmft)/Decay, Missing, Filling, and Teeth for permanent teeth (DMFT) indexes of the children aged 7-12 years who applied to our faculty were recorded. Approximately 1 mL of unstimulated saliva samples were collected, and SBC was evaluated. PRAL and HEI scores were calculated by entering the data in the form of a daily nutrition record of the children into the BeBiS software (Ebispro for Windows, Stuttgart, Germany). The association of dental caries indices with PRAL, SBC, and HEI was analyzed using an independent sample t-test. A binomial logistic regression analysis was performed to predict the dental caries burden. The statistical significance level was adjusted to a=0.05. RESULTS: A total of 150 children, 88 (58.6%) females and 62 (41.4%) males, were included in the study. Significant differences were found between the low and high dental caries groups for dmft regarding PRAL and SBC (p<0.001). A significant difference was found between the low and high dental caries groups for DMFT in terms of SBC (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: In our study, established regression models significantly predicted dental caries in primary teeth. SBC was the most influential factor in predicting dental caries compared to PRAL and HEI. There was a significant relationship between SBC, PRAL, and caries in primary teeth. In the model we created, the strongest predictor was SBC.

disorders. The aim of the study is to investigate the impact of the VR Psychosocial Treatment Program (PTP) on psychosocial functioning and symptoms in people with schizophrenia. METHOD: Seven schizophrenia patients who have been admitted to the Schizophrenia Outpatient Unit of Dokuz Eylül University School of Medicine and met the diagnosis of schizophrenia according to DSM-V diagnostic criteria were included in the study. Psychosocial functionality level was assessed by PSP (Personal and Social Performance Scale), positive and negative symptom severity with PANSS (Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale), and social skills with SSC (Social Skills Checklist). VRPTP was continued for a total of 10 sessions and twice a week during five weeks. In this study, a real-environment-based VR-PTP for schizophrenia patients was developed. In the sessions, there were different realenvironment- based VR contents including social interaction components such as cafe, market, bazaar, public transportation. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant difference between the PSP scores before and after the VR application (p=0.018). None of the patients reported motion sickness during VR sessions due to the immersive nature of VR. There was no significant difference between pre and post VR PANSS total and subscale scores. CONCLUSION: In this preliminary study, we discovered that realenvironment- based VR-PTP is effective for improving the social skills of patients with schizophrenia. Cognitive enhancement programs and psychosocial functionality therapies may be carried out using virtual reality in the near future. VR can assist patients in coping with their symptoms and day-to-day challenges.

OBJECTIVE: Given the increasing cultural, linguistic diversity in Europe, there is a growing need for cognitive screening tools that minimize the influence of linguistic, cultural, and demographic differences as they are the first means to determine the need for further clinical evaluation of individuals with suspected cognitive impairment. This cross-sectional study compared performance on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale (RUDAS) in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) patients in relation to cultural, demographic, and immigration-related factors (acculturation, bilingualism). METHOD: The study comprised Turkish immigrant (n = 21) and monolingual, nonimmigrant German (n = 20) and Turkish (n = 24) patients with AD. All participants were administered cognitive screening tools, measures of depression, and dementia severity. RESULTS: The mean MMSE total score was significantly higher in German patients with AD compared to both patient groups, but did not differ between native-born Turkish and Turkish immigrant groups. After adjustment for years of education, differences in MMSE performance were no longer significant between groups. Furthermore, bilingualism was associated with better performance on the MMSE in Turkish-immigrant patients. The mean RUDAS total scores were similar between groups with and without adjustment for educational level. Performance on the RUDAS was not associated with demographic and immigration-related variables. CONCLUSIONS: The findings highlight the need to consider the educational background, linguistic integration of older non-Western immigrants for the objective characterization of cognitive profiles. The results provide support for the use of the RUDAS, particularly, among older Turkish immigrants with lower educational levels and varying degrees of acculturation, bilingualism. Nutrition is a basic need and is crucial for the persistence of good health. This awareness has increased since December 2019 during the pandemic that the world is still facing. The importance of nutrition in infectious diseases was emphasized but the relationship between the severity of symptoms and nutrition status of individuals was not examined. This study compared the nutrition status of patients with COVID-19 admitted to the emergency service and the clinical severity of the disease. Based on the nutrition status of the 337 patients included in the study, 87.2% (294) of the patients were in the low-risk group while 12.8% (43) were in the high-risk group in terms of malnutrition. In the analysis conducted to examine the effect of nutrition on the severity of disease, the relationship between NRS 2002 and dyspnea, cough, weakness, fever, and other symptoms was statistically significant. It was concluded that healthy nutrition is crucial during the pandemic, and it is necessary to consider nutrition improvement as a way to cope with emerging viral infections.

OBJECTIVES: The present study aims to investigate the effects of age, gender, and level of education on P300 in a healthy population, aged 50 years and over; and determine the reliability metrics for different conditions and measurement methods. METHOD: Auditory and visual oddball recordings of 171 healthy adults were investigated. A fully automated preprocessing was applied to elicit ERP P300. Maximum peak amplitude, latency and mean amplitudes were measured. Data were stratified by age, gender, and education to determine group-level differences by using repeat measures of ANOVA. The internal consistency of P300 was calculated by a split-half method using odd-even segments. Test-retest reliability was assessed by calculating the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). RESULTS: Maximum peak P300 amplitudes were higher in the 50-64 years age group compared to the >65 years age group; and females showed increased P300 amplitudes compared to males. P300 measures showed fair to good internal consistency and poor to good test-retest reliability. CONCLUSION: Age and gender should be taken into account when designing ERP studies with elderly individuals. P300 showed good internal consistency in general, between gender groups and age groups. Long-term test-retest reliability was lower but acceptable. These findings can be interpreted as the strength of P300 by being an objective and reliable method independent of cultural differences. Here we underline several factors that may affect P300 measures and discuss other possible factors that should be standardized for P300 to be used in clinical settings.

Introduction: The number of dementia patients in Turkey is increasing, as well as all over the world. However, we do not know how much society knows about dementia. The aim of this study is to evaluate people's concept of dementia, their awareness of dementia research and treatment, whether dementia and forgetfulness are considered normal in old age, and whether having dementia is associated with a lack of mental abilities. Methods: A Dementia Awareness Questionnaire was created in the form of a self-report questionnaire, consisting of 20 questions and using a five-point Likert-type answering method in order to question participants' information about dementia. In addition, we asked for demographic information such as age, gender, occupation, education level of the participants, as well as whether they have had relatives diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease. The surveys were administered online. Results: A total of 1551 participants from 53 cities were included in the study. Approximately half of the participants did not know the definition of dementia, 20.9% thought that dementia and Alzheimer's disease were the same; 50.4% considered forgetfulness, and 55.2% considered dementia as a natural consequence of aging. While 34.5% of the participants thought that dementia patients could be dangerous, 10.3% thought they could not continue living as a part of society. While 38.5% of healthcare professionals do not know the definition of dementia, 18.5% of them say that dementia and Alzheimer's disease are the same, 58.5% think that dementia patients are not fit to make their own decisions, 40.6% believe that dementia patients have criminal liability. 15.8% of healthcare professionals thought that dementia is only seen in elderly people; 21.4% thought that dementia, and 49.2% thought that forgetfulness was a result of normal aging. Conclusion: Our study confirms that dementia is still an unknown concept in society and among healthcare professionals. It is widely believed that forgetfulness and dementia are part of normal aging, and there is no cure for dementia. This study, which we have done in order to understand the level of dementia awareness in Turkish society, reveals the necessity for research on dementia and studies on how to increase dementia awareness.

OBJECTIVES: The present study aims to compare early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD) patients with healthy controls (HC), and late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) patients using resting-state delta, theta, alpha, and beta oscillations and provide a cut-off score of alpha/theta ratio to discriminate individuals with EOAD and young HC. METHODS: Forty-seven individuals with EOAD, 51 individuals with LOAD, and demographically-matched 49 young and 51 older controls were included in the study. Spectral-power analysis using Fast-Fourier Transformation (FFT) is performed on resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) data. Delta, theta, alpha, and beta oscillations compared between groups and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was conducted. RESULTS: Compared to healthy controls individuals with EOAD showed an increase in slow frequency bands and a decrease in fast frequency bands. Frontal alpha/theta power ratio is the best discriminating value between EOAD and young HC with the sensitivity and specificity greater than 80% with area under the curve (AUC) 0.881. CONCLUSIONS: EOAD display more widespread and severe electrophysiological abnormalities than LOAD and HC which may reflect more pronounced pathological burden and cholinergic deficits in EOAD. Additionally, the alpha/theta ratio can discriminate EOAD and young HC successfully. SIGNIFICANCE: This study is the first to report that resting-state EEG power can be a promising marker for diagnostic accuracy between EOAD and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Electroencephalogram (EEG) is one of the most demanded screening tools that investigates the effects of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) on human brain. Identification of AD in early stage gives rise to efficient treatment in dementia. Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is considered as a conversion stage. Reducing EEG complexity can be used as a marker to detect AD. The aim of this study is to develop a 3-way diagnostic classification using EEG complexity in the detection of MCI/AD in clinical practice. This study also investigates the effects of different eyes states, i.e. eyes-open, eyes-closed on classification performance. METHODS: EEG recordings from 85 AD, 85 MCI subjects, and 85 Healthy Controls with eyes-open and eyes- closed are analyzed. Permutation Entropy (PE) values are computed from frontal, central, parietal, temporal, and occipital regions for each EEG epoch. Distribution of PE values are visualized to observe discrimination of MCI/AD with HC. Visual investigations are combined with statistical analysis using ANOVA to determine whether groups are significant or not. Multinomial Logistic Regression model is applied to feature sets in order to classify participants individually. RESULTS: Distribution of measured PE shows that EEG complexity is lower in AD and higher in HC group. MCI group is observed as an intermediate form due to heterogeneous values. Results from 3-way classification indicate that F1-scores and rates of sensitivity and specificity achieve the highest overall discrimination rates reaching up to 100% for at TP8 for eyes-closed condition; and C3, C4, T8, O2 electrodes for eyes-open condition. Classification of HC from both patient groups is achieved best. Eyes-open state increases discrimination of MCI and AD. CONCLUSIONS: This nonlinear EEG methodology study contributes to literature with high discrimination rates for identification of AD. PE is recommended as a practical diagnostic neuro-marker for AD studies. Resting state EEG at eyes-open condition can be more advantageous over eyes-closed EEG recordings for diagnosis of AD.

BACKGROUND: In relaxed adults, staying in quiet wakefulness at eyes closed is related to the so-called resting state electroencephalographic (rsEEG) rhythms, showing the highest amplitude in posterior areas at alpha frequencies (8-13 Hz). OBJECTIVE: Here we tested the hypothesis that age may affect rsEEG alpha (8-12 Hz) rhythms recorded in normal elderly (Nold) seniors and patients with mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease (ADMCI). METHODS: Clinical and rsEEG datasets in 63 ADMCI and 60 Nold individuals (matched for demography, education, and gender) were taken from an international archive. The rsEEG rhythms were investigated at individual delta, theta, and alpha frequency bands, as well as fixed beta (14-30 Hz) and gamma (30-40 Hz) bands. Each group was stratified into three subgroups based on age ranges (i.e., tertiles). RESULTS: As compared to the younger Nold subgroups, the older one showed greater reductions in the rsEEG alpha rhythms with major topographical effects in posterior regions. On the contrary, in relation to the younger ADMCI subgroups, the older one displayed a lesser reduction in those rhythms. Notably, the ADMCI subgroups pointed to similar cerebrospinal fluid AD diagnostic biomarkers, gray and white matter brain lesions revealed by neuroimaging, and clinical and neuropsychological scores. CONCLUSION: The present results suggest that age may represent a deranging factor for dominant rsEEG alpha rhythms in Nold seniors, while rsEEG alpha rhythms in ADMCI patients may be more affected by the disease variants related to earlier versus later onset of the AD.

Event-related oscillatory responses reflect the cognitive status in many neuropsychiatric conditions including mild cognitive impairment (MCI). In this study, a total of 30 patients with amnestic MCI (aMCI) and 25 patients with MCI of Parkinson's disease (PD-MCI) were compared with 28 aged-, gender-, education-matched healthy control (HC) participants using visual event-related delta, theta, alpha oscillatory responses by methods of event-related spectral perturbation and inter-trial coherence. PD-MCI and aMCI groups commonly share a decreased theta power, but all electrophysiological deviations from the controls were more prominent in PD-MCI than aMCI in all frequency bands. Additionally, decreased phase-locking in all studied frequency bands was encountered only in PD-MCI group, but it was preserved in aMCI. These findings indicate that visual networks in PD-MCI are more severely affected than aMCI. Reduced phase-locking in PD-MCI may possibly relate to dysfunctioning subcortical modulating centers that take a role in the generation of event-related responses.
