RESUMO

Contamination of aquatic ecosystems with organic and inorganic contaminants is a global threat due to their hazardous effects on the environment and human health. Floating treatment wetland (FTW) technology is a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to existing treatment approaches. It consists of a buoyant mat in which wetland plants can grow and develop their roots in a suspended manner and can be implemented to treat stormwater, municipal wastewater, and industrial effluents. Here we explored the potential of bacterial-augmented FTWs for the concurrent remediation of phenol and hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) contaminated water and evaluated treated water toxicity using Triticum aestivum L. (wheat) as a test plant. The FTWs carrying Phragmites australis L. (common reed) were inoculated with a consortium of four bacterial strains (Burkholderia phytofirmans PsJN, Acinetobacter lwofii ACRH76, Pseudomonas aeruginosa PJRS20, Bacillus sp. PJRS25) and evaluated for their potential to simultaneously remove phenol and chromium (Cr) from contaminated water. Results revealed that the FTWs efficiently improved water quality by removing phenol (86%) and Cr (80%), with combined use of P. australis and bacterial consortium after 50 days. The phytotoxicity assay demonstrated that the germination of wheat seed (96%) was significantly higher where bacterial-augmented FTWs treated water was used compared to untreated water. This pilot-scale study highlights that the combined application of wetland plants and bacterial consortium in FTWs is a promising approach for concomitant abatement of phenol and Cr from contaminated water, especially for developing countries like Pakistan where the application of advanced and expensive technologies is limited.


This pilot-scale research provides new interventions and information required for establishing a large-scale remediation framework for the effective, sustainable and eco-friendly remediation of phenol and Cr co-contaminated aquatic ecosystems, using bacterial augmented floating wetlands technology (FTWs).

Under paddy soil conditions, rice plants are vulnerable to arsenic (As) accumulation, thus causing potential threat to human health. Here we investigated the influence of foliar-applied phosphorus (P: 10 and 20 mg L-1), silicon (Si: 0.6 and 1.5 g L-1) and selenium (Se: 5 and 10 mg L-1) on As accumulation, morphological and physiological attributes of two contrasting rice genotypes (KSK-133 and Super Basmati) under As stress (25 mg kg-1 as arsenate). Silicon foliar dressing significantly (p < 0.05) reduced grain As uptake (up to 67%) and improved rice growth and chlorophyll content (28-66%) in both rice genotypes over their controls. Phosphorus foliar application resulted in a notable decrease (17%) in grain As uptake of coarse rice genotype (KSK-133), while it slightly increased grain As uptake in the fine one (Super Basmati; 6%) compared to controls. However, foliar-applied Se did not show significant effects on rice plants growth attributes and As uptake in both genotypes. Similarly, biochemical and enzymatic attributes (i.e., lipid peroxidation, electrolyte leakage, peroxidase and catalase) were improved with Si application in rice plants, except for P treatment that was only effective for coarse one. Foliar-applied Si also resulted in reduced cancer risk and hazard quotient (< 0.10) for both rice genotypes. This study advances our understanding on critical role of different foliar-applied nutrients and rice genotypes, which is imperative to develop effective As remediation and management strategies in coarse and fine rice genotypes and protect human health.


This study provided new insights on the significance of foliar-applied phosphorus, silicon and selenium for the management and remediation of arsenic in fine (Super Basmati) and coarse (KSK-133) rice genotypes. Foliar-applied silicon was the most promising strategy to mitigate arsenic uptake and minimizing health risk in rice grain of both genotypes, while phosphorus was effective only for coarse one, thus showing a genotype dependent response. Interestingly, selenium foliar application had no significant effect on arsenic accumulation in both rice genotypes.

Due to industrialization and urbanization, the use of detergents inadvertently led to contamination of aquatic environments, thus posing potential threat to aquatic organisms and human health. One of the main components of detergents is linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), which can cause toxic effects on living organisms, particularly aquatic life in the environment. In this study, floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) mesocosms were developed and augmented with LAS-degrading bacteria. The plant species, Brachiaria mutica (Para grass), was vegetated to establish FTWs and bacterial consortium (1:1:1:1) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain PJRS20, Bacillus sp. BRRH60, Acinetobacter sp. strain CYRH21, and Burkholderia phytofirmans Ps.JN was augmented (free or immobilized) in these mesocosms. Results revealed that the FTWs removed LAS from the contaminated water and their augmentation with bacteria slightly increased LAS removal during course of the experiment. Maximum reduction in LAS concentration (94%), chemical oxygen demand (91%), biochemical oxygen demand (93%), and total organic carbon (91%) was observed in the contaminated water having FTWs augmented with bacterial consortium immobilized on polystyrene sheet. This study highlights that the FTWs supported with immobilized bacteria on polystyrene sheets can provide an eco-friendly and sustainable solution for the remediation of LAS-bearing water, especially for developing countries like Pakistan.


This pilot-scale study provided insights to resolve the detergent-contaminated wastewater issue, using floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) augmented with bacteria. The FTWs augmented with bacteria immobilized on a polystyrene sheet and vegetated with Brachiaria mutica led to high degradation of LAS, a toxic compound of detergent, from the contaminated water.

In this study, the chemical composition, repellent, and oviposition deterrent effects of five plant essential oils (EOs) extracted from Lantana camara (Verbenaceae), Schinus terebinthifolia (Anacardiaceae), Callistemon viminalis (Myrtaceae), Helichrysum odoratissimum (Asteraceae), and Hyptis suaveolens (Lamiaceae) were evaluated against Aedes aegypti, Anopheles gambiae, and Culex quinquefasciatus. When tested at 33.3 µg/cm2, L. camara, S. terebinthifolia, C. viminalis, and H. odoratissimum were effective repellents against Ae. aegypti (89%, 91%, 90%, and 51% repellency, respectively), but they were less repellent against An. gambiae (66%, 86%, 59%, and 49% repellency, respectively). Interestingly, L. camara, S. terebinthifolia, C. viminalis, and H. odoratissimum exhibited 100% repellency against Cx. quinquefasciatus at 33.3 µg/cm2. In time-span bioassays performed at 333 µg/cm2, the EO of L. camara exhibited 100% repellence against Ae. aegypti and An. gambiae for up to 15 min and against Cx. quinquefasciatus for 75 min. The oviposition bioassays revealed that L. camara exhibited the highest activity, showing 85%, 59%, and 89% oviposition deterrence against Ae. aegypti, An. gambiae, and Cx. quinquefasciatus, respectively. The major compounds of L. camara, S. terebinthifolia, and C. viminalis were trans-ß-caryophyllene (16.7%), α-pinene (15.5%), and 1,8-cineole (38.1%), respectively. In conclusion, the L. camara and S. terebinthifolia EOs have the potential to be natural mosquito repellents.

Climate change is a global challenge that is accelerated by contamination with hazardous substances like arsenic (As), posing threat to the agriculture, ecosystem and human health. Here, we explored the impact of various ameliorants on geochemical distribution of As in two soils with contrasting textures (sandy clay loam (Khudpur Village) and clay loam (Mattital Village)) under paddy soil conditions and their influence on the CO2-carbon efflux. The exchangeable As pool in clay loam soil increased as: lignite (0.4%) < biogas slurry (6%) < cow dung (9%), and < biochar (20%). However, in the sandy clay loam soil exchangeable soil As pool was found to be maximum with farmyard manure followed by biogas slurry, biochar and cow dung (17%, 14%, 13% and 7%, respectively). Interestingly, in the sandy clay loam soil the percentage As distribution in organic fraction was: biochar (38%) > cow dung (33%) > biogas slurry (23%) > sugarcane bagasse (22%) > farmyard manure (21%) that was higher compared to the clay loam soil (< 6% for all the amendments). In addition to the highest As immobilization by biochar in sandy clay loam soil, it also led to the lowest CO2-carbon efflux (1470 CO2-C mg kg-1) among all the organic/inorganic amendments. Overall, the current study advances our understanding on the pivotal role of organic amendments, notably biochar, in immobilizing As under paddy soil conditions with low (CO2) carbon loss, albeit it is dependent on soil and ameliorant types.

BACKGROUND: There is an emerging understanding that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with increased incidence of pneumomediastinum. We aimed to determine its incidence among patients hospitalised with COVID-19 in the United Kingdom and describe factors associated with outcome. METHODS: A structured survey of pneumomediastinum and its incidence was conducted from September 2020 to February 2021. United Kingdom-wide participation was solicited via respiratory research networks. Identified patients had SARS-CoV-2 infection and radiologically proven pneumomediastinum. The primary outcomes were to determine incidence of pneumomediastinum in COVID-19 and to investigate risk factors associated with patient mortality. RESULTS: 377 cases of pneumomediastinum in COVID-19 were identified from 58 484 inpatients with COVID-19 at 53 hospitals during the study period, giving an incidence of 0.64%. Overall 120-day mortality in COVID-19 pneumomediastinum was 195/377 (51.7%). Pneumomediastinum in COVID-19 was associated with high rates of mechanical ventilation. 172/377 patients (45.6%) were mechanically ventilated at the point of diagnosis. Mechanical ventilation was the most important predictor of mortality in COVID-19 pneumomediastinum at the time of diagnosis and thereafter (p<0.001) along with increasing age (p<0.01) and diabetes mellitus (p=0.08). Switching patients from continuous positive airways pressure support to oxygen or high flow nasal oxygen after the diagnosis of pneumomediastinum was not associated with difference in mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Pneumomediastinum appears to be a marker of severe COVID-19 pneumonitis. The majority of patients in whom pneumomediastinum was identified had not been mechanically ventilated at the point of diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is an old oilseed crop with a 1.4 GB genome size and its flowers are used for food coloring, dyes and pharmaceutical industries. It was domesticated from its putative wild ancestor Carthamus palestinus about forty-five hundred years ago in the fertile crescent region.The current study was aimed to determine the genetic diversity, population structure and to check the applicability of iPBS-retrotransposons markers. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eleven POGP primers yielded 70 bands of which 61 were highly polymorphic with 87.14% polymorphism. A great level of genetic variation was examined with higher values of overall gene diversity (0.27), genetic distance (0.53), number of effective alleles (1.46), Shannon's information index (0.41) and polymorphism information contents (0.71). Analysis of molecular variance revealed high genetic variation with 79% within the population. The STRUCTURE, PCoA and Neighbor-joining analysis separated the safflower germplasm into 2 major populations and 1 un-classified population. The accessions which were from Asian countries i.e., China, Afghanistan, Turkey, Iran and Pakistan were genetically similar and clustered together in both populations A and B. The maximum genetic distance was measured 0.88 between Pakistan 26 x Pakistan 24. CONCLUSION: Findings of this research such as maximum diversity indices, higher PIC values showed the effectiveness and utility of POGP markers for the evaluation of genetic relationships among safflower accessions. The results of this study also showed that POGP markers are less effective compared to ISSRs, iPBS-retrotransposons and DArTSeq markers. AMOVA showed high genetic variation (79%) within a population and maximum genetic distance was found between the accessions Pakistan 26- Pakistan 24 and may be suggested as candidate parents for future breeding activities of safflower. The accessions from the fertile crescent region were clustered together and proved the origin of safflower domestication. This study highlights genetic variation among safflower germplasm and could be helpfull for parental selection and planning for future breeding programs.

Assume that G is a finite group. The power graph P(G) of G is a graph in which G is its node set, where two different elements are connected by an edge whenever one of them is a power of the other. A topological index is a number generated from a molecular structure that indicates important structural properties of the proposed molecule. Indeed, it is a numerical quantity connected with the chemical composition that is used to correlate chemical structures with various physical characteristics, chemical reactivity, and biological activity. This information is important for identifying well-known chemical descriptors based on distance dependence. In this paper, we study Hosoya properties, such as the Hosoya polynomial and the reciprocal status Hosoya polynomial of power graphs of various finite cyclic and non-cyclic groups of order pq and pqr, where p,q and r(p≥q≥r) are prime numbers.

A topological index is a number derived from a molecular structure (i.e., a graph) that represents the fundamental structural characteristics of a suggested molecule. Various topological indices, including the atom-bond connectivity index, the geometric-arithmetic index, and the Randic index, can be utilized to determine various characteristics, such as physicochemical activity, chemical activity, and thermodynamic properties. Meanwhile, the non-commuting graph ΓG of a finite group G is a graph where non-central elements of G are its vertex set, while two different elements are edge connected when they do not commute in G. In this article, we investigate several topological properties of non-commuting graphs of finite groups, such as the Harary index, the harmonic index, the Randic index, reciprocal Wiener index, atomic-bond connectivity index, and the geometric-arithmetic index. In addition, we analyze the Hosoya characteristics, such as the Hosoya polynomial and the reciprocal status Hosoya polynomial of the non-commuting graphs over finite subgroups of SL(2,C). We then calculate the Hosoya index for non-commuting graphs of binary dihedral groups.

Compounds derived from plants have several anticancer properties. In the current study, one guaiane-type sesquiterpene dimer, vieloplain F, isolated from Xylopia vielana species, was tested against B-Raf kinase protein (PDB: 3OG7), a potent target for melanoma. A comprehensive in silico analysis was conducted in this research to understand the pharmacological properties of a compound encompassing absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET), bioactivity score predictions, and molecular docking. During ADMET estimations, the FDA-approved medicine vemurafenib was hepatotoxic, cytochrome-inhibiting, and non-cardiotoxic compared to the vieloplain F. The bioactivity scores of vieloplain F were active for nuclear receptor ligand and enzyme inhibitor. During molecular docking experiments, the compound vieloplain F has displayed a higher binding potential with -11.8 kcal/mol energy than control vemurafenib -10.2 kcal/mol. It was shown that intermolecular interaction with the B-Raf complex and the enzyme's active gorge through hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic contacts was very accurate for the compound vieloplain F, which was then examined for MD simulations. In addition, simulations using MM-GBSA showed that vieloplain F had the greatest propensity to bind to active site residues. The vieloplain F has predominantly represented a more robust profile compared to control vemurafenib, and these results opened the road for vieloplain F for its utilization as a plausible anti-melanoma agent and anticancer drug in the next era.

Ferroptosis is a recently described programmed cell death mechanism that is characterized by the buildup of iron (Fe)-dependent lipid peroxides in cells and is morphologically, biochemically, and genetically distinct from other forms of cell death, having emerged to play an important role in cancer biology. Ferroptosis has significant importance during cancer treatment because of the combination of factors, including suppression of the glutathione peroxidase 4 (Gpx4), cysteine deficiency, and arachidonoyl (AA) peroxidation, which cause cells to undergo ferroptosis. However, the physiological significance of ferroptosis throughout development is still not fully understood. This current review is focused on the factors and molecular mechanisms with the diagrammatic illustrations of ferroptosis that have a role in the initiation and sensitivity of ferroptosis in various malignancies. This knowledge will open a new road for research in oncology and cancer management.

The current study explored the effects of natural compounds, berbamine, bergapten, and carveol on paclitaxel-associated neuroinflammatory pain. Berbamine, an alkaloid obtained from BerberisamurensisRuprhas been previously researched for anticancer and anti-inflammatory potential. Bergapten is 5-methoxsalenpsoralen previously investigated in cancer, vitiligo, and psoriasis. Carveol obtained from caraway is a component of essential oil. The neuropathic pain model was induced by administering 2 mg/kg of paclitaxel (PTX) every other day for a week. After the final PTX injection, a behavioral analysis was conducted, and subsequently, tissue was collected for molecular analysis. Berbamine, bergapten, and carveol treatment attenuated thermal hypersensitivity, improved latency of falling, normalized the changes in body weight, and increased the threshold for pain sensation. The drugs increased the protective glutathione (GSH) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) levels in the sciatic nerve and spinal cord while lowering inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and lipid peroxidase (LPO). Hematoxylin and eosin (H and E) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) examinations confirmed that the medication reversed the abnormal alterations. The aforementioned natural substances inhibited cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κb) overexpression, as evidenced by enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) and Western blot and hence provide neuroprotection in chronic constriction damage.

Isoxazole derivatives are significant enough due to their wide range of pharmacological and therapeutic activities. The purpose of the current study is to use computational, in vitro, in vivo, and extensive molecular approaches to examine the possible anti-ulcer activity of 4-benzylidene-3 methyl-1,2-isoxazol-5(4H)-one (MBO). Biovia Discovery Studio visualizer (DSV) was utilized for virtual screening. A tissue antioxidant investigation, H+/K+-ATPase test, and anti-H. pylori activities were carried out. ELISA, immunohistochemistry, and PCR methods were employed for the proteome analysis. An ethanol-induced stomach ulcer model was used to examine the anti-ulcer potential in rats. The binding affinities for MBO ranged from -5.4 to -8.2 Kcal/mol. In vitro findings revealed inhibitory activity against H. pylori and the H+/K+-ATPase pump. It also enhanced levels of glutathione, catalase, and glutathione-S-transferase and reduced lipid peroxidation levels in gastric tissues of rats. In vivo results showed the gastro-protective effect of MBO (30 mg/kg) in ulcerative rat stomachs. The proteomic study revealed decreased expression of inflammatory markers (cyclooxygenase-2, p-NFkB, and TNF-α). In RT-PCR analysis, the expression levels of H+/K+-ATPase were reduced. Furthermore, ADMET (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity) studies revealed that MBO has high GIT solubility and has a safer profile for cardiac toxicity. This study suggests that MBO displayed anti-ulcer potential, which may have been mediated through the inhibition of the H+/K+-ATPase pump, as well as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory pathways. It has the potential to be a lead molecule in the treatment of peptic ulcers with fewer adverse effects.

The preliminary phytochemical analysis of Rumex hastatus showed different phytoconstituents and shows different peaks in GC-MC chromatogram. Rumex hastatus crude extract (Rh.Cr), fractions, and rutin attributed dose-dependent (50-300 mg/kg) protection (0-100%) against castor oil-induced diarrhea and dose-dependently inhibited intestinal fluid secretions in mice. They decreased the distance traversed by charcoal in the gastrointestinal transit model in rats. In rabbit jejunum preparations, Rh.Cr and Rh.ETAC caused a concentration-dependent relaxation of both spontaneous and K+ (80 mM)-induced contractions at a similar concentration range, whereas Rh.n-Hex, rutin, and verapamil were relatively potent against K+-induced contractions and shifted the Ca2+ concentration-response curves (CRCs) to the right, Rh.Cr (0.3-1 mg/mL) and Rh.ETAC (0.1-0.3 mg/mL) shifted the isoprenaline-induced inhibitory CRCs to the left. Rh.n-Hex, Rh.ETAC and rutin showed anti-H. pylori effect, also shows an inhibitory effect against H+/K+-ATPase. Rumex hastatus showed gastroprotective and antioxidant effects. Histopathological evaluation showed improvement in cellular architecture and a decrease in the expression of inflammatory markers such as, cyclooxygenase (COX-2), tumor necrosis factor (TN,F-α) and phosphorylated nuclear factor kappa B (p-NFƙB), validated through immunohistochemistry and ELISA techniques. In RT-PCR it decreases H+/K+-ATPase mRNA levels. Rumex hastatus was found to be safe to consume up to a dose of 2000 mg/kg in a comprehensive toxicity profile. Docking studies revealed that rutin against H+/K+-ATPase pump and voltage-gated L-type calcium channel showed E-values of -8.7 and -9.4 Kcal/mol, respectively. MD simulations Molecular Mechanics Poisson Boltzmann surface area and molecular mechanics Generalized Born surface area (MMPBSA/GBSA) findings are consistent with the in-vitro, in-vivo and docking results.

Suppose G is a finite group. The power graph represented by P(G) of G is a graph, whose node set is G, and two different elements are adjacent if and only if one is an integral power of the other. The Hosoya polynomial contains much information regarding graph invariants depending on the distance. In this article, we discuss the Hosoya characteristics (the Hosoya polynomial and its reciprocal) of the power graph related to an algebraic structure formed by the symmetries of regular molecular gones. As a consequence, we determined the Hosoya index of the power graphs of the dihedral and the generalized groups. This information is useful in determining the renowned chemical descriptors depending on the distance. The total number of matchings in a graph Γ is known as the Z-index or Hosoya index. The Z-index is a well-known type of topological index, which is popular in combinatorial chemistry and can be used to deal with a variety of chemical characteristics in molecular structures.

Disconnected (disco)-interacting protein 2 homolog B (Dip2B) is a member of the Dip2 superfamily and plays an essential role in axonal outgrowth during embryogenesis. In adults, Dip2B is highly expressed in different brain regions, as shown by in situ analysis, and may have a role in axon guidance. However, the expression and biological role of Dip2B in other somatic tissues remain unknown. To better visualize Dip2B expression and to provide insight into the roles of Dip2B during postnatal development, we used a Dip2btm1a(wtsi)komp knock-in mouse model, in which a LacZ-Neo fusion protein is expressed under Dip2b promoter and allowed Dip2B expression to be analyzed by X-gal staining. qPCR analyses showed that Dip2b mRNA was expressed in a variety of somatic tissues, including lung and kidney, in addition to brain. LacZ staining indicated that Dip2B is broadly expressed in neuronal, reproductive, and vascular tissues as well as in the kidneys, heart, liver, and lungs. Moreover, neurons and epithelial cells showed rich staining. The broad and intense patterns of Dip2B expression in adult mice provide evidence of the distribution of Dip2B in multiple locations and, thereby, its implication in numerous physiological roles.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium falciparum is an obligate intracellular parasite of humans that causes malaria. Falciparum malaria is a major public health threat to human life responsible for high mortality. Currently, the risk of multi-drug resistance of P. falciparum is rapidly increasing. There is a need to address new anti-malarial therapeutics strategies to combat the drug-resistance threat. METHODS: The P. falciparum essential proteins were retrieved from the recently published studies. These proteins were initially scanned against human host and its gut microbiome proteome sets by comparative proteomics analyses. The human host non-homologs essential proteins of P. falciparum were additionally analysed for druggability potential via in silico methods to possibly identify novel therapeutic targets. Finally, the PfAp4AH target was prioritized for pharmacophore modelling based virtual screening and molecular docking analyses to identify potent inhibitors from drug-like compounds databases. RESULTS: The analyses identified six P. falciparum essential and human host non-homolog proteins that follow the key druggability features. These druggable targets have not been catalogued so far in the Drugbank repository. These prioritized proteins seem novel and promising drug targets against P. falciparum due to their key protein-protein interactions features in pathogen-specific biological pathways and to hold appropriate drug-like molecule binding pockets. The pharmacophore features based virtual screening of Pharmit resource predicted a lead compound i.e. MolPort-045-917-542 as a promising inhibitor of PfAp4AH among prioritized targets. CONCLUSION: The prioritized protein targets may worthy to test in malarial drug discovery programme to overcome the anti-malarial resistance issues. The in-vitro and in-vivo studies might be promising for additional validation of these prioritized lists of drug targets against malaria.

Soils contaminated with heavy metals such as Chromium (Cr) and Cadmium (Cd) severely impede plant growth. Several rhizospheric microorganisms support plant growth under heavy metal stress. In this study, Cr and Cd stress was applied to in vitro germinating seedlings of a Legume plant species, Sesbania sesban, and investigated the plant growth potential in presence and absence of Bacillus anthracis PM21 bacterial strain under heavy metal stress. The seedlings were exposed to different concentrations of Cr (25-75 mg/L) and Cd (100-200 mg/L) in Petri plates. Growth curve analysis of B. anthracis PM21 revealed its potential to adapt Cr and Cd stress. The bacteria supported plant growth by exhibiting ACC-deaminase activity (1.57-1.75 µM of α-ketobutyrate/h/mg protein), producing Indole-3-acetic acid (99-119 µM/mL) and exopolysaccharides (2.74-2.98 mg/mL), under heavy metal stress condition. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences in growth parameters between the seedlings with and without bacterial inoculation in metal stress condition. The combined Cr+Cd stress (75 + 200 mg/L) significantly reduced root length (70%), shoot length (24%), dry weight (54%) and fresh weight (57%) as compared to control. Conversely, B. anthracis PM21 inoculation to seedlings significantly increased (p ≤ 0.05) seed germination percentage (5%), root length (31%), shoot length (23%) and photosynthetic pigments (Chlorophyll a: 20%; Chlorophyll b: 16% and total chlorophyll: 18%), as compared to control seedlings without B. anthracis PM21 inoculation. The B. anthracis PM21 inoculation also enhanced activities of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (52%), peroxidase (66%), and catalase (21%), and decreased proline content (56%), electrolyte leakage (50%), and malondialdehyde concentration (46%) in seedlings. The B. anthracis PM21 inoculated seedlings of S. sesban exhibited significantly high (p ≤ 0.05) tissue deposition of Cr (17%) and Cd (16%) as compared to their control counterparts. Findings of the study suggested that B. anthracis PM21 endured metal stress through homeostasis of antioxidant activities, and positively impacted S. sesban growth and biomass. Further experiments in controlled conditions are necessary for investigating phytoremediation potential of S. sesban in metal-contaminated soils in presence of B. anthracis PM21 bacterial strain.

Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative spiral-shaped bacterium that infects half of the human population worldwide and causes chronic inflammation. In the present study, we used the art of computational biology for therapeutic drug targets identification and a multi-epitope vaccine against multi-strains of H. pylori. For drug target identification, we used different tools and softwares to identify human non-homologous but pathogen essential proteins, with virulent properties and involved in unique metabolic pathways of H. pylori. For this purpose, the core proteome of 84 strains of H. pylori was retrieved from EDGAR 2.3 database. There were 59,808 proteins sequences in these strains. Duplicates and paralogous protein sequence removal was followed by human non-homologous protein miningPathogen essential and virulent proteins were subjected to pathway analysis Subcellular localization of the virulent proteins was predicted and druggability was also checked, leading to 30 druggable targets based on their similarity with the approved drug targets in Drugbank. For immunoinformatics analysis, we selected two outer membrane proteins (HPAKL86_RS06305 and HPSNT_RS00950) and subjected to determined immunogenic B and T-Cell epitopes. The B and T-Cell overlapped epitopes were selected to design 9 different vaccine constructs by using linkers and adjuvants. Least allergenic and most antigenic construct (C-8) was selected as a promiscuous vaccine to elicit host immune response. Cloning and in silico expression of the constructed vaccine (C-8) was done to produce a clone having the desired (gene) vaccine construct. In conclusion, the prioritized therapeutic targets for 84 strains of H.pylori will be useful for future therapy design. Vaccine design may also prove useful in the quest for targeting multi-strains of H. pylori in patients.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of hypertension and to explore the risk factors associated with it. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, a population based survey was conducted on inhabitants of Rawalpindi-Islamabad region, 219 individuals; aged 18 years or above were included in the study. Blood pressure was measured along with information about individual's demographic and socio-economic characteristics were obtained using a standard questionnaire.. RESULTS: Overall prevalence of hypertension was 29.22% (males: 21.9% and females: 78.1%) in individuals residing in Rawalpindi-Islamabad. High blood pressure is more associated with obesity (59.4%) and a progressive increase in hypertension was observed with increasing age. Bivariate analysis revealed that hypertension has a significant correlation (p-value<0.05) with age, gender, family status, weight and physical health. CONCLUSIONS: The study concludes that our generation is well aware about the risks and consequences of hypertension, but they still continue to make no or little effort in managing or preventing it. The factors contributing to hypertension are low physical activity, diet and lack of interest to maintain their health.
