RESUMO

Localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) can enhance the electromagnetic fields on metallic nanostructures upon light illumination, providing an approach for manipulating light-matter interactions at the sub-wavelength scale. However, currently, there is no thorough investigation of the physical mechanism in the dynamic formation of the strongly coupled LSPRs on sub-5 nm plasmonic cavities at the sub-picosecond scale. In this work, through femtosecond broadband transient absorption spectroscopy, we reveal the dynamic ultrastrong coupling processes in a nanoparticle-in-trench (NPiT) structure containing 2 nm gap cavities, and demonstrate a coherent motional coupling between vibrating AuNPs and the nanogaps. We achieve a maximum Rabi splitting energy of ∼660 meV in the sub-picosecond hot-electron relaxation time scale under the resonant excitation of the nanogap cavity's LSPR, reaching the ultrastrong coupling regime. This leads to a change of global vibration modes for the 2 nm gap cavity, potentially related to the dynamical Casimir effect with nanogap resonators.

RESUMO

Germline-encoded pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) recognize molecules frequently found in pathogens (pathogen-associated molecular patterns [PAMPs]) during viral infection. This process induces production of IFNs, leading to expression of IFN-stimulated genes to establish a cellular antiviral state against viral infection. However, aberrant activation of the IFN system may cause immunopathological damage and systemic autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus. Stringent control of IFN signaling activation is critical for maintaining homoeostasis of the immune system; yet, the mechanisms responsible for its precise regulation remain to be elucidated. In this study, we identified that ring finger protein 215 (RNF215), a zinc finger protein, was upregulated by viral infection in human macrophages. In addition, we demonstrated that RNF215 inhibited the production of type I IFNs at least in part via interacting with p65, a subunit of NF-κB, and repressed the accumulation of NF-κB in the promoter region of IFNB1. Moreover, we found that the expression of RNF215 negatively correlated with type I IFNs in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, indicating that RNF215 plays an important role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. Collectively, our data identified RNF215 as a key negative regulator of type I IFNs and suggested RNF215 as a potential target for intervention in diseases with aberrant IFN production.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: It is uncertain how COVID-19 outbreak influences the hepatitis B epidemics. This study aims to evaluate the effects on hepatitis B owing to the COVID-19 outbreak and forecast the hepatitis B epidemiological trend in mainland China to speed up the course of the "End viral hepatitis Strategy". METHODS: We estimated the causal impacts and created a forecast through adopting monthly notifications of hepatitis B each year from 2005 to 2020 in mainland China using the Bayesian structural time series (BSTS) method. RESULTS: The hepatitis B epidemics fluctuates irregularly during the period 2005-2007(APC = 8.7, P = 0.246) and 2015-2020(APC = 1.7, P = 0.290), and there is a downturn (APC=-3.2, 95% CI -5.2 to -1.2, P = 0.006) from 2007 to 2015 in mainland China. The COVID-19 outbreak was found to have a monthly average reduction on the hepatitis B epidemics of 26% (95% CI 18-35%) within the first three months in 2020,17% (95% CI 7.7-26%) within the first six months in 2020, and 10% (95% CI19-22%) all year as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, (probability of causal effect = 96.591%, P = 0.034) and the forecasts showed an upward trend from 2021 to 2025 (annual percentage change = 4.18, 95% CI 4.0 to 4.3, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The COVID-19 has a positive effect on the decline of hepatitis B cases. And the potential of BSTS model to forecast the epidemiological trend of the hepatitis B can be applied in automatic public health policymaking in mainland China.

RESUMO

Mounting evidence has associated Zika virus (ZIKV) infection with congenital malformations, including microcephaly, which raises global alarm. Nonetheless, mechanisms by which ZIKV disrupts neurogenesis and causes microcephaly are far from being understood. In this study, we discovered direct effects of ZIKV on neural progenitor cell development by inducing caspase-1- and gasdermin D (GSDMD)-mediated pyroptotic cell death, linking ZIKV infection with the development of microcephaly. Importantly, caspase-1 depletion or its inhibitor VX-765 treatment reduced ZIKV-induced inflammatory responses and pyroptosis, and substantially attenuated neuropathology and brain atrophy in vivo. Collectively, our data identify caspase-1- and GSDMD-mediated pyroptosis in neural progenitor cells as a previously unrecognized mechanism for ZIKV-related pathological effects during neural development, and also provide treatment options for ZIKV-associated diseases.

RESUMO

Soil quality deterioration and heavy metal contamination have greatly limited soil productivity in mining areas. As soil is a complex system with various properties and interactions, it is imperative to conduct a comprehensive investigation to understand the amendment's mechanisms at work in the soil in mining areas as well as effective ways to address its deteriorating quality. In this study, a potassium dihydrogen phosphate-modified maize straw-cow dung biochar (PBC) was applied as a soil amendment. Various physicochemical properties of the soil including organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, and pore characteristics were analyzed. This study also assessed soil-saturated water content and soil moisture characteristic curve. Lettuce biomass was measured and changes in various speciation of Pb and Cd in the soil, and the accumulation of Pb and Cd in lettuce were examined. Results showed that the addition of PBC increased soil organic matter, total nitrogen, and available phosphorus while reducing soil bulk density, it also increased soil porosity, saturated water content, and capillary water capacity. Soil structure analysis using CT scanning revealed that 3% PBC increased the macrospores volume fraction while 5% PBC made the pores more uniform. Lettuce biomass increased by 53.3%. 5% PBC resulted in a 56.79% and 38.30% reduction in Pb and a 44.56% and 16.60% reduction in Cd in roots and shoots of lettuce respectively. PBC facilitated the transformation of Pb and Cd from unstable fractions to stable fractions through complexation and precipitation. Overall, the addition of PBC effectively improved soil nutrients, porosity, and water-holding capacity, promoted plant growth, immobilized Pb and Cd, as well as reduced the bioavailability in contaminated-soil from mining areas. This study provides an effective strategy and a new perspective for the remediation of Pb-Cd-contaminated soils.

RESUMO

Complexity quantification, through entropy, information theory and fractal dimension indices, is gaining a renewed traction in psychophsyiology, as new measures with promising qualities emerge from the computational and mathematical advances. Unfortunately, few studies compare the relationship and objective performance of the plethora of existing metrics, in turn hindering reproducibility, replicability, consistency, and clarity in the field. Using the NeuroKit2 Python software, we computed a list of 112 (predominantly used) complexity indices on signals varying in their characteristics (noise, length and frequency spectrum). We then systematically compared the indices by their computational weight, their representativeness of a multidimensional space of latent dimensions, and empirical proximity with other indices. Based on these considerations, we propose that a selection of 12 indices, together representing 85.97% of the total variance of all indices, might offer a parsimonious and complimentary choice in regards to the quantification of the complexity of time series. Our selection includes CWPEn, Line Length (LL), BubbEn, MSWPEn, MFDFA (Max), Hjorth Complexity, SVDEn, MFDFA (Width), MFDFA (Mean), MFDFA (Peak), MFDFA (Fluctuation), AttEn. Elements of consideration for alternative subsets are discussed, and data, analysis scripts and code for the figures are open-source.

RESUMO

The application of strain into GeSn alloys can effectively modulate the band structures, thus creating novel electronic and photonic devices. Raman spectroscopy is a powerful tool for characterizing strain; however, the lack of Raman coefficient makes it difficult for accurate determination of strain in GeSn alloys. Here, we have investigated the Raman-strain function of Ge1-xSnxalong 〈1 0 0〉 and 〈1 1 0〉 directions. GeSn nanomembranes (NMs) with different Sn compositions are transfer-printed on polyethylene terephthalate substrates. External strain is introduced by bending fixtures with different radii, leading to uniaxial tensile strain up to 0.44%. Strain analysis of flexible GeSn NMs bent along 〈1 0 0〉 and 〈1 1 0〉 directions are performed by Raman spectroscopy. The linear coefficients of Raman-strain for Ge0.96Sn0.04are measured to be -1.81 and -2.60 cm-1, while those of Ge0.94Sn0.06are decreased to be -2.69 and -3.82 cm-1along 〈1 0 0〉 and 〈1 1 0〉 directions, respectively. As a result, the experimental ratio of linear coefficient (ROLC) of Ge, Ge0.96Sn0.04and Ge0.94Sn0.06are 1.34, 1.44 and 1.42, which agree well with theoretical ROLC values calculated by elastic compliances and phonon deformation potentials (PDPs). In addition, the compositional dependence of PDPs is analyzed qualitatively. These fundamental parameters are important in designing high performance strained GeSn electronic and photonic devices.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is still attracting public attention because of its outbreak in various cities in China. Predicting future outbreaks or epidemics disease based on past incidence data can help health departments take targeted measures to prevent diseases in advance. In this study, we propose a multistep prediction strategy based on extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) for HFRS as an extension of the one-step prediction model. Moreover, the fitting and prediction accuracy of the XGBoost model will be compared with the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model by different evaluation indicators. METHODS: We collected HFRS incidence data from 2004 to 2018 of mainland China. The data from 2004 to 2017 were divided into training sets to establish the seasonal ARIMA model and XGBoost model, while the 2018 data were used to test the prediction performance. In the multistep XGBoost forecasting model, one-hot encoding was used to handle seasonal features. Furthermore, a series of evaluation indices were performed to evaluate the accuracy of the multistep forecast XGBoost model. RESULTS: There were 200,237 HFRS cases in China from 2004 to 2018. A long-term downward trend and bimodal seasonality were identified in the original time series. According to the minimum corrected akaike information criterion (CAIC) value, the optimal ARIMA (3, 1, 0) × (1, 1, 0)12 model is selected. The index ME, RMSE, MAE, MPE, MAPE, and MASE indices of the XGBoost model were higher than those of the ARIMA model in the fitting part, whereas the RMSE of the XGBoost model was lower. The prediction performance evaluation indicators (MAE, MPE, MAPE, RMSE and MASE) of the one-step prediction and multistep prediction XGBoost model were all notably lower than those of the ARIMA model. CONCLUSIONS: The multistep XGBoost prediction model showed a much better prediction accuracy and model stability than the multistep ARIMA prediction model. The XGBoost model performed better in predicting complicated and nonlinear data like HFRS. Additionally, Multistep prediction models are more practical than one-step prediction models in forecasting infectious diseases.

RESUMO

Depression is known to be one of the most common mental disorders raising global concerns. However, evidence regarding the association between short-term air pollution exposure and risk of development of depression is limited. The aim of this was to assess the relationship between short-term ambient air pollution exposure and depression in outpatient visits in Xi'an, a northwestern Chinese metropolis. Data for air pollutants including particulate matter (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels from October 1, 2010 to December 31, 2013 and number of daily depression outpatient visits (92,387 in total) were collected. A time-series quasi-Poisson regression model was adopted to determine the association between short-term air pollutant concentrations and frequency of outpatient visits for depression with different lag models. Consequently, 10 µg/m3 increase of SO2 and NO2 levels corresponded to significant elevation in number of outpatient-visits for depression on concurrent days (lag 0), and this relationship appeared stronger in cool seasons (October to March). However, the association of PM10 was only significant in males aged 30-50 at lag 0. Evidence indicated that short-term exposure to ambient air pollutants especially in cool seasons might be associated with increased risk of outpatient visits for depression.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To study the efficacy of Huaiqihuang granules as adjuvant therapy for bronchial asthma in children. METHODS: A multicenter, prospective, and registered real-world study was performed for the children, aged 2-5 years, who had a confirmed diagnosis of bronchial asthma in the outpatient service of 21 hospitals in China. Among these children, the children treated with medications for long-term asthma control (inhaled corticosteroid and/or leukotriene receptor antagonist) without Huaiqihuang granules were enrolled as the control treatment group, and those treated with medications for long-term asthma control combined with Huaiqihuang granules were enrolled as the combined treatment group. The medical data of all children were collected. Outpatient or telephone follow-up was performed at weeks 4, 8, 12, 20, 28, and 36 after treatment, including asthma attacks and rhinitis symptoms. A statistical analysis was performed for the changes in these indices. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the frequency of asthma attacks or rhinitis attacks between the two groups before treatment (P>0.05). After treatment, the combined treatment group had significantly lower frequencies of asthma attacks, severe asthma attacks, and rhinitis attacks compared with the control treatment group (P<0.05). There was no signification difference in the incidence rate of adverse reactions between the two groups (P=0.667). CONCLUSIONS: Huaiqihuang granules in addition to medications for long-term asthma control can alleviate the symptoms of bronchial asthma and rhinitis and improve the level of asthma control in children with bronchial asthma, with good safety and little adverse effect. RESUMO

D2 receptors (D2Rs) located in both pre- and postsynaptic membranes of medium spiny neurons (MSNs) in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) are involved in the stress response and associated behaviors. The role of D2Rs in chronic unpredictable stress (CUS)-induced depression-like behaviors is not clear. Quinpirole (a D2R agonist) and eticlopride (a D2R antagonist) were stereotactically delivered into the NAc before Sprague Dawley rats underwent CUS. CUS-induced depression-like behaviors were accompanied by a significant decrease in both the dopamine (DA) level and D2R expression in the NAc. Eticlopride reversed CUS-induced depression-like behavior and rescued the DA levels in the NAc, and microinjection of DA into the NAc of CUS individuals had the same effect as eticlopride. By contrast, delivery of quinpirole into the NAc of control animals induced depression-like behaviors accompanied by a decrease in the DA level in the NAc. These results show that DA plays a key role in CUS-induced depression-like behaviors and the D2R exerts a presynaptic negative feedback on DA levels during CUS. Microinjection of quinpirole into the NAc also decreased the level of the kalirin-7 protein in the NAc of both control and stressed animals, while eticlopride increased its level in the NAc of rats. In agreement with these results, intraperitoneal injection of eticlopride in mice also caused an increase in both the kalirin-7 protein level in the NAc and spine density in MSNs, while quinpirole reduced them. These results suggest that regulation of kalirin-7 through D2R in the NAc is a general pathway in rats and mice, and is involved in CUS-induced depression-like behaviors. Kalirin-7 may be directly regulated through the D2R postsynaptic pathway or indirectly through the presynaptic pathway in the NAc. The interaction between D2R and kalirin-7 needs to be investigated further.

RESUMO

The incorporation of a mechanically interlocked molecule such as pseudorotaxane into metal-organic coordination polymers has afforded plenty of new hybrid materials with special structures and unique properties. In this work, we employ a weakly bound cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6])-bipyridinium pseudorotaxane as a supramolecular precursor to assemble with uranyl, aiming to construct uranyl-rotaxane coordination polymers (URCPs) with intriguing structures. By adjusting the synthetic conditions, a new kinked-helix uranyl rotaxane compound (URCP3), together with three other compounds URCP1, URCP2, and URCP4 varying from 1D chains to 2D interwoven networks, was obtained. Detailed structural analyses indicate that the pseudorotaxane ligand (C8BPCA@CB[6]) shows great configuration diversity in the construction of URCPs, which is most probably due to the weak binding strength between the host and guest molecules. Specifically, based on the monodentate coordination of the end carboxyl groups of C8BPCA forced by the surrounding unilaterally-chelated oxalate, the entire flexible pseudorotaxane linker will be more likely to undergo conformational change, thereby binding to the uranyl center from both sides of the uranyl equatorial plane and promoting the formation of a kinked helix structure of URCP3 that is shaped like a Chinese knot along [001]. This work enriches the library of actinide-rotaxane compounds and provides a new approach to construct metal-organic compounds with complicated structures using weakly bonded pseudorotaxanes as well.

RESUMO

Template synthesis is one of the most feasible ways to explore new uranyl compounds with intriguing structures and properties. Here we demonstrate the preparation of six novel "sandwichlike" uranyl coordination polymers (UCPs) based on two-dimensional uranyl-terephthalate acid (H2TP) networks using CBn (n = 5, 6, 8) as template ligands in the presence of different cations (Na+, K+, Cs+, or H2N(CH3)2+). Compound 1 ([UO2(TP)2][Na2(CB5)(H2O)](H2O)5) is composed of layered uranyl-TP networks with the complex of CB5 and sodium cations as template ligands. In compound 2 ([(UO2)2(TP)3]2(CB6)(H2O)10), CB6 located between uranyl-TP networks contacts them by π-π interactions and hydrogen bonds. Compound 3 ([(UO2)2(TP)3]2[Na2(H2O)10(CB6)]) is the same as compound 2 except for sodium cations bonding with CB6. Similarly in compound 4 ([(UO2)2(TP)3][Cs(H2O)3(CB6)]), CB6 is a capsulelike structure capped with two cesium cations and interacts with uranyl-TP networks through π-π and C-H···π interactions. Compound 5 ([(UO2)2(TP)3(HCOO)2][K(H2O)2(CB5)]2[H2N(CH3)2]2(CB6)(H2O)6) consists of both templates of CB6 and CB5 in which each CB5 is capped with one potassium cation while the H2N(CH3)2+ cation is held at CB6 portals. In compound 6 ([(UO2)2(TP)3]2[UO2(TP)2(H2O)2][Cs(CB8)3(H2O)4](H2O)16), CB8 ligands are connected by cesium cations to form a triangle motif and are further located between the uranyl-TP networks as template agents. All of the 2D layered structures with free CBn or cation-anchored CBn intercalate into the laminates of uranyl-terephthalate and shows a cucurbituril-mediated structural evolution. The regulating role of CBn as structure-directing template agents for the construction of layered UCPs through outer-surface interactions with layers of uranyl terephthalate is demonstrated, especially for the case of CB6 with contractive interlayer spacing.

RESUMO

GeSn alloys have emerged as promising materials for silicon-based optoelectronic devices. However, the epitaxy of pseudomorphic GeSn layers on a Ge buffer is susceptible to a significant compressive strain that significantly hinders the performance of GeSn-based photonic devices. Herein, we report on a new strategy to produce strain-free GeSn nanomembranes for advanced optoelectronic applications. The GeSn alloy was grown on a silicon-on-insulator substrate using Ge buffers, and it has a residual compressive strain. By transfer-printing the GeSn/Ge/Si multi-layers, followed by etching the Si template and the Ge buffer layers, respectively, the residual compressive strain was completely removed to achieve strain-free GeSn layers. A bandgap reduction was also observed as a result of strain relaxation. Furthermore, theoretical analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of strain relaxation on the GeSn-based optoelectronic devices. The proposed approach offers a practical and viable method for preparing strain-free GeSn alloys for advanced optoelectronic applications.

RESUMO

The effect of emotion on memory often leads to the trade-off: enhanced memory for emotional items comes at the cost of memory for background information. Although this effect is usually attributed to overt attention during encoding, Steinmetz and Kensinger (2013) proposed that such an effect might also be related to post-stimulus elaboration. Based on previous different viewpoints, we used the directed forgetting paradigm to further explore the effect of post-stimulus elaboration on the memory trade-off. In the meantime, we also tested the roles of background valence and item salience (high salient items were placed in the centre of backgrounds while low salient items were placed in the periphery of backgrounds) in modulating the memory trade-off. Our results showed that there was a memory trade-off when backgrounds were neutral, whereas this was no longer the case when backgrounds were negative. This indicated the memory trade-off might be affected by background valence. Meanwhile, we found post-stimulus elaboration contributed to selective memory enhancement for backgrounds, while item salience enhanced item memory performance in the memory trade-off. These findings suggest the emotion-induced memory trade-off may be a complex memory effect, which can be influenced by different factors to varying degrees.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Many options exist for the management of cholelithiasis and secondary choledocholithiasis. Among them, laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (LCBDE) with choledocotomy followed by laparoscopic cholecystectomy has gained popularity. However, efforts should be made to ensure minimally invasive or noninvasive management of the common bile duct (CBD). The purpose of this study was to explore the clinical experience of non-invasive surgical modality, i.e., laparoscopic transcystic dilation of the cystic duct confluence in CBD exploration (LTD-CBDE), including feasibility, safety, adverse events, and incidence. METHODS: In this retrospective analysis, 68 patients were offered the LTD-CBDE technique from December 2015 to April 2018 based on patient's own intention. During the surgery, the cystic duct confluence was dilated with separation forceps and/or a columnar dilation balloon. Subsequently, CBD exploration and stone extraction were performed with a choledochoscope. The entrance of the CBD was covered with a cystic duct stump wall and was subjected to primary closure at the end of surgery. RESULTS: Forty-nine females and 19 males with cholelithiasis and secondary choledocholithiasis were included. The mean age was 53 years old (18 to 72 year). Of these patients, 62 (91.2%) were successfully treated with the LTD-CBDE technique, and bile leakage was observed in 3 patients (4.4%). The mean operation time was 106 min, and the mean hospital stay was 5.9 days. Among the other 6 patients, 3 were converted to open cholecystectomy due to severe fibrosis, unclear anatomical structure at Calot's triangle (n = 2) or Mirizze syndrome (n = 1); LCBDE was performed in 3 patients due to cystic duct atresia (n = 2) and low level of flow from the gallbladder duct into the CBD (n = 1). These patients had a smooth postoperative course. In total, 43/68 of the patients presented no radiological evidence of retained CBD stones at the postoperative follow-up (40 patients treated with LTD-CBDE) 1 year later. CONCLUSIONS: The current work suggests that LTD-CBDE for the management of cholelithiasis and secondary choledocholithiasis is a feasible, safe and effective technique with a low complication rate. LTD-CBDE offers another alternative for surgeons to treat patients in similar scenarios. However, additional randomized, controlled studies are needed to demonstrate its efficacy, safety, and impact on CBD stenosis.

RESUMO

Elastic metal-organic materials (MOMs) capable of multiple stimuli-responsiveness based on dual-stress and thermally responsive triple-helix coordination polymers are presented. The strong metal-coordination linkage and the flexibility of organic linkers in these MOMs, rather than the 4 Šstacking interactions observed in organic crystals, causes the helical chain to act like a molecular spring and thus accounts for their macroscopic elasticity. The thermosalient effect of elastic MOMs is reported for the first time. Crystal structure analyses at different temperatures reveal that this thermoresponsiveness is achieved by adaptive regulation of the triple-helix chains by fine-tuning the opening angle of flexible V-shaped organic linkers and rotation of its lateral conjugated groups to resist possible expansion, thus demonstrating the vital role of adaptive reorganization of triple-helix metal-organic chains as a molecular spring-like motif in crystal jumping.

RESUMO

Herein we present a new viologen-based radical-containing metal-organic framework (RMOF) Gd-IHEP-7, which upon heating in air undergoes a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation to generate Gd-IHEP-8. Both RMOFs exhibit excellent air and water stability as a result of favorable radical-radical interactions, and their long-lifetime radicals result in wide spectral absorption in the range 200-2500 nm. Gd-IHEP-7 and Gd-IHEP-8 show excellent activity toward solar-driven nitrogen fixation, with ammonia production rates of 128 and 220 µmol h-1 g-1 , respectively. Experiments and theoretical calculations indicate that both RMOFs have similar nitrogen fixation pathways. The enhanced catalytic efficiency of Gd-IHEP-8 versus Gd-IHEP-7 is attributed to intermediates stabilized by enhanced hydrogen bonding.

RESUMO

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in the pathology of various tumours, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of their specific association with NSCLC have not been fully elucidated. Here, we report that a cytoplasmic lncRNA, DUXAP9-206 is overexpressed in NSCLC cells and closely related to NSCLC clinical features and poor patient survival. We reveal that DUXAP9-206 induced NSCLC cell proliferation and metastasis by directly interacting with Cbl-b, an E3 ubiquitin ligase, and reducing the degradation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and thereby augmenting EGFR signaling in NSCLC. Notably, correlations between DUXAP9-206 and activated EGFR signaling were also validated in NSCLC patient specimens. Collectively, our findings reveal the novel molecular mechanisms of DUXAP9-206 in mediating the progression of NSCLC and DUXAP9-206 may serve as a potential target for NSCLC therapy.

RESUMO

Bipyridine organic bases are beneficial to the synthesis of novel uranyl-organic hybrid materials, but the relationship between their molecular structures and specific roles as structure-directing agents, especially for the semirigid dicarboxylate systems, is still unclear. Here we demonstrate how the bipyridine ligands direct the coordination assembly of uranyl-organic compounds with a semirigid dicarboxylate linker, 4,4'-dicarboxybiphenyl sulfone (H2dbsf), by utilizing a series of bipyridine ligands, 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bpy), 5,5'-dimethylbipyridine (5,5'-dmbpy), 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy), or 1,3-di(4-pyridyl)propane (bpp). Under hydrothermal conditions, eight uranyl-organic coordination polymers (UCPs), four of which [[UO2(dbsf)(phen)] (1), [UO2(dbsf)(phen)]·H2O (1'), [U4O10(dbsf)3]2[H2bpp]2 (6), and [U4O10(dbsf)3]2[H2bpp] (6')] were reported previously, were synthesized and divided into two types based on the chelate or template effect of these bipyridine ligands. 1, 1', [UO2(dbsf)(2,2'-bpy)] (2), and [(UO2)2(dbsf)2(5,5'-dmbpy)2] (3) are springlike triple helices with bipyridine ligands (phen, 2,2'-bpy, or 5,5'-dmbpy) as chelate ligands, while [U4O10(dbsf)3][H2(4,4'-bpy)] (4), [U4O10(dbsf)3]2[H(4,4'-bpy)]2[Ni(H2O)6] (5), 6, and 6' are tetranuclear uranyl-mediated 2-fold-interpenetrating networks with 4,4'-bpy or bpp as template ligands and charge-balancing agents. The participation or not in uranyl coordination of different bipyridine ligands promotes not only diversity in uranyl speciation and final topological structures among different classes of organic bases but also consistency for the same types of bipyridine ligands, which thus endows the possibility of the rational design of UCPs based on semirigid dicarboxylate ligands with the aid of cautiously selected bipyridine ligands.
