RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of postoperative prune consumption on time to first bowel movement after benign gynecologic surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this randomized, open label, controlled trial, 77 adult women who had benign gynecologic surgery that required at least one night in the hospital were enrolled from July 2018 to April 2019. Participants were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to one of two groups using a randomization assignment: 4 oz prunes daily plus docusate sodium 100 g twice daily versus docusate alone. The study's primary objective was time to first bowel movement (BM). Secondary outcomes were pain associated with first BM, stool consistency using Bristol stool scale, and patient satisfaction with bowel regimen and surgery experience. RESULTS: Postoperative survey data was available for 68.4% of participants (n = 52). There was no difference in time to first BM between the two groups (p = 0.29); however, consumption of > 12 prunes was associated with an increased likelihood of having a BM in the study period. Among women who consumed at least 12 prunes, hospital discharge was earlier, and there was a not statistically significant greater satisfaction with postoperative bowel regimen. CONCLUSIONS: The addition of prunes to postoperative bowel regimen of docusate sodium may be a beneficial adjunct to postoperative bowel regimen. CLINICAL TRIAL: The Institutional Review Board at the University of Southern California approved the study, and the study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov (ID: NCT03523715).

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: We sought to develop a Spanish translation of the Female Genitourinary Pain Index (GUPI) and to validate this instrument in US Latina women. METHODS: Translation back-translation was performed to create the initial Spanish version. Bilingual women with pelvic and/or genitourinary pain were recruited from clinical sites and social media. Participants reported demographics and completed the Female GUPI in both English and Spanish. Agreement was assessed for each item, subscale and total score. Additionally, we performed cognitive debriefing interviews to further test face validity. A consensus group of bilingual physicians and healthcare personnel utilized comments from the interviews to create a final Spanish version. RESULTS: Thirty-four participants completed the questionnaire. Their average age was 33 years, 80% reported attending some college, and 20% reported an undergraduate degree or higher. Most were born in mainland USA (57%) or Mexico (27%). Agreement for the pain, urinary and quality of life subscales between the English and Spanish versions of the measure were excellent (0.91, 0.89 and 0.92, respectively) with 0.96 agreement for the measure as a whole. Despite favorable psychometrics, preferences for alternate wording were reported over 50 times. Based on that feedback, a consensus group was formed, which recommended changes to 13 of the 15 items, 3 of which required complete rewriting. CONCLUSIONS: The Spanish Female GUPI is strongly correlated with the English original; however, participants reported the language was overly complex. Translation and validation should include review of the measure and feedback by the target audience for optimal clarity and readability.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of the study was to determine if there is a difference in pain during and after multichannel urodynamic testing in women when using 2% lidocaine gel versus water-based lubricant. METHODS: This was a randomized, controlled, double-blinded study. Women scheduled to undergo urodynamic testing were invited to participate. Participants were randomized to lidocaine 2% gel or water-based lubricant for use during testing. Both participant and examiner were blinded to the type of gel. Pain was assessed by the Wong-Baker pain scale from 0 to 10 at four points during the examination. After testing, participants completed a questionnaire to assess their expectations of pain and embarrassment with urodynamic testing. The examiner also completed a questionnaire to assess his/her impression of the participant's pain during the procedure. RESULTS: The women in the lidocaine group had lower pain scores after the cotton tipped swab test (1.3 vs 3.6, lidocaine vs lubricant respectively, p < 0.001) and after placement of urodynamic catheters (1.4 vs 3.9, lidocaine vs lubricant, respectively, p < 0.001). Mean pain scores 30 min post-completion of the study were similar between groups (0.7 vs 1.2, 1.4 vs 3.9, lidocaine vs lubricant respectively, p = 0.19). Participants reported that pain during the study was better than expected in both groups. Physician perception of the participant's pain during testing was lower in the lidocaine group (2 vs 3, lidocaine vs lubricant respectively p = 0.008). CONCLUSION: Use of 2% lidocaine gel during in and out catheterization, cotton-tipped swab test, and urodynamic testing decreases pain during these procedures.

In spite of the global decline in its incidence and mortality, gastric carcinoma still remains a major cause of death due to cancer. Early detection of gastric carcinoma is expected to reduce mortality rates. The applications of measuring of pepsinogen I and pepsinogen II are useful in screening of gastric carcinoma. This cross sectional comparative study was done to find out the correlation of histopathological pattern of gastric carcinoma with serum pepsinogen I & II ratio in the Department of Pathology, Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College, Sylhet, Bangladesh from January 2010 to December 2010. For these purpose 40 patients with gastric carcinoma, endoscopically visible and histopathologically proved malignant lesions were enrolled as case group. Forty subjects with normal upper GI endoscopy were taken as control. Five ml of venous blood was taken from both case and control subjects to determine serum pepsinogen I and pepsinogen II level by ELISA method, subsequently pepsinogen I and II ratio was calculated. In this study different cut off values of serum pepsinogen I and II ratio was determined and the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy were 70.0%, 97.5% 96.6% 76.5% and 83.8% respectively, at cut off value of 6. Which is the most suitable cut off point of serum pepsinogen I and II ratio for gastric cancer screening.

Tuberculosis is a very common disease in our country. This retrospective histopathological study was designed to assess the distribution of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) in various organs through examination of biopsy specimens. A total of 216 specimens were diagnosed as tubercular lesion by histopathological evaluation in the Department of pathology, Community Based Medical College and a private laboratory during the period from January 2014 to December 2014. Mean age of the case was 32 years. Majority of the cases were female (126 out of 216). Lymph nodes were the most common site of EPTB (62.96%) followed by skin and subcutaneous tissue (17.59%), intestine (11.11%), breast (2.77%), female genital tract (2.31%), male genital tract (1.38%), bone and joint (1.85%). Out of 136 cases of tubercular lymphadenitis, 96(70.58%) were cervical, 18(13.23%) were axillary, 12(3.82%) were mesenteric and 10(7.35%) were inguinal. This study reveals, in our locality, EPTB is very common in adulthood with female preponderance. Cervical lymph node is very common sites for EPTB.

A novel gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile, psychrophilic bacterium, designated strain E4-9a(T), was isolated from a marine sediment sample collected at a depth of 276 m from Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, in the Arctic Ocean. The colony colour was golden yellow. Strain E4-9a(T) was positive for amylase activity at 5 °C. The predominant fatty acids were iso-C(15 : 1) G (21.8 %), anteiso-C(15 : 0) (19.1 %), anteiso-C(15 : 1) A (18.6 %), iso-C(15 : 0) (13.8 %) and iso-C(16 : 1) H (6.4 %). Strain E4-9a(T) contained MK-6 as the major respiratory quinone. The polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, three unidentified aminolipids (AL1, AL4 and AL5), an unidentified phospholipid and four unidentified lipids (L1, L4 to L6). Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, it was ascertained that the closest related species to E4-9a(T) were Lacinutrix copepodicola, L. algicola and L. mariniflava, with sequence similarity to the respective type strains of 98.5, 96.5 and 95.8 %. Phylogenetic analysis showed that strain E4-9a(T) clustered with the type strain of L. copepodicola and with those of L. algicola and L. mariniflava at distances of 1.5 and 4.8 % (98.5 and 95.2 % similarity), respectively. However, DNA-DNA hybridization with L. copepodicola DJ3(T) showed 59 % relatedness with respect to strain E4-9a(T). The DNA G+C content of strain E4-9a(T) was 29 mol%. Based on the results of DNA-DNA hybridization and phenotypic data, it appears that strain E4-9a(T) represents a novel species of the genus Lacinutrix, for which the name Lacinutrix himadriensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is E4-9a(T) ( = CIP 110310(T)  = KCTC 23612(T)).

A novel Gram-negative, rod-coccus shaped, non-motile, strain, RS-3(T), was isolated from a sediment sample collected from the marine transect of Kongsfjorden, Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, Arctic. Colonies and broth cultures were yellowish in colour due to the presence of carotenoids. Strain RS-3(T) was positive for oxidase, aesculinase, caseinase, gelatinase and urease activities and negative for amylase, catalase, lipase, lysine decarboxylase, ornithine decarboxylase, DNase and ß-galactosidase activities. The predominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (18.0), anteiso-C15 : 0 (16.8), iso-C15 : 1 G (14.2), anteiso-C15 : 1 A (6.0) and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH (6.8). Strain RS-3(T) contained MK-6 (72.42 %) and MK-7 (27.58 %) as the major respiratory quinones and phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids and two unidentified lipids make up the polar lipid composition. The DNA G+C content of strain RS-3(T) was 34.7±1.2 mol%. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that Winogradskyella pacifica and Winogradskyella thalassocola are the most closely related species with sequence similarities to the type strains of these species of 98.5 and 97.7 %, respectively. However, DNA-DNA hybridization with Winogradskyella pacifica KCTC 22997(T) and Winogradskyella thalassocola DSM 15363(T) showed a relatedness of 22 and 42.5 % with respect to strain RS-3(T). Based on the DNA-DNA hybridization values, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics and phylogenetic inference, strain RS-3(T) is proposed as a novel species of the genus Winogradskyella, for which the name Winogradskyella psychrotolerans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Winogradskyella psychrotolerans sp. nov. is RS-3(T) ( = CIP 110154(T) = NBRC 106169(T)). An emended description of the genus Winogradskyella is provided.

Two novel violet-pigmented, Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile bacteria, designated strains M4-16(T) and M4-9, were isolated from sediment from an Arctic glacier. The predominant fatty acids of both strains were C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c (summed feature 3), C16 : 0, C14 : 0 and C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c (summed feature 8) and both strains contained ubiquinone-8 as the respiratory quinone. The polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified phospholipids and one unidentified aminolipid. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strains M4-16(T) and M4-9 were members of the genus Iodobacter and closely related to Iodobacter fluviatilis ATCC 33051(T) with pairwise sequence similarity of 98.9 %. The DNA-DNA relatedness between strains M4-9 and M4-16(T) was 92.5 %, while strains M4-9 and M4-16(T) had DNA-DNA relatedness values of 21.5 and 18.2 %, respectively, with Iodobacter fluviatilis JCM 9044(T). The RAPD-PCR banding patterns of strains M4-9 and M4-16(T) were similar but differed from that of Iodobacter fluviatilis JCM 9044(T). Based on data from the current polyphasic study, strains M4-16(T) and M4-9 represent a novel species of the genus Iodobacter, for which the name Iodobacter arcticus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Iodobacter arcticus is M4-16(T) ( = CIP 1103011(T) = MTCC 11351(T)).

A novel Gram-staining-negative, coccoid, non-motile bacterium, designated strain V1-41(T), was isolated from a sample of marine sediment collected, at a depth of 200 m, from Kongsfjorden (an inlet on the west coast of Spitsbergen, an island that forms part of the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean). The strain formed cream-brown colonies on marine agar. Cells of the novel strain were positive in tests for catalase, oxidase, lysine decarboxylase and ornithine decarboxylase activities but negative for gelatinase and lipase activities. They hydrolysed aesculin, starch and urea, but not casein or DNA. Most of the cellular fatty acids were medium-chain and saturated (37.1%) or long-chain and unsaturated (27.8%), with C(12:0) (37.1%), C(18:1)ω7c, and summed features 2 (19.3%) and 3 (24.1%) predominating. The major respiratory quinone was Q-8. The polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, two unidentified aminophospholipids, four unidentified phospholipids and one other unidentified lipid. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the novel strain's closest known relatives were Oceanisphaera litoralis DSM 15406(T) (98.5% sequence similarity) and Oceanisphaera donghaensis BL1(T) (98.3%). In DNA-DNA hybridizations, however, the levels of relatedness between strain V1-41(T) and O. litoralis DSM 15406(T) and between the novel strain and O. donghaensis DSM 17589(T) were found to be only 19% and 29%, respectively. Based on these low levels of similarity at the DNA-DNA level and the phenotypic and chemotaxonomic differences from O. litoralis DSM 15406(T) and O. donghaensis DSM 17589(T), strain V1-41(T) represents a novel species of the genus Oceanisphaera for which the name Oceanisphaera arctica sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is V1-41(T) ( = CCUG 58690(T) = KCTC 23013(T) = NBRC 106171(T)).

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting restrictions placed upon society have had a profound impact on both physical and mental health, particularly for young people. AIMS: The current study assesses the impact of COVID-19 on student mental health. METHOD: Four hundred and thirty four first year Undergraduate students completed a battery of self-report questionnaires (PHQ-P, GAD-7 and SAS-SV) to assess for depression, anxiety and mobile phone addiction respectively with data being collected over a 2 year period. The data from each year was compared (216 and 218 students respectively). RESULTS: A MANOVA revealed that COVID-19 had a significant impact on self-reported levels of depression, anxiety and smartphone addiction-which all significantly increased from the 2020 to the 2021 group. The percentage of students who had a score which warranted a classification of clinical depression increased from 30 to 44%, and for anxiety increased from 22 to 27%-those students who showed a comorbidity across the two rose from 12 to 21%. Smartphone addiction levels rose from 39 to 50%. Correlational analysis showed a significant relationship between Smartphone usage and depression and anxiety. CONCLUSIONS: This research suggests that COVID-19 has had a major impact upon student mental health, and smartphone addiction. The importance of identifying predictive factors of depression and anxiety is emphasised, and suggestions for intervention are discussed.

Two 16S rRNA gene clone libraries (KF and KS) were constructed using two soil samples (K7s and K8s) collected near Kafni Glacier, Himalayas. The two libraries yielded a total of 648 clones. Phyla Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Spirochaetae, Tenericutes and Verrucomicrobia were common to the two libraries. Phyla Acidobacteria, Chlamydiae and Nitrospirae were present only in KF library, whereas Lentisphaerae and TM7 were detected only in KS. In the two libraries, clones belonging to phyla Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria were the most predominant. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that KF and KS were different and arsenic content influenced the differences in the percentage of OTUs. PCA indicated that high water content in the K8s sample results in high total bacterial count. PCA also indicated that bacterial diversity of KF and KS was similar to soils from the Pindari Glacier, Himalayas; Samoylov Island, Siberia; Schrimacher Oasis, Antarctica and Siberian tundra. The eleven bacterial strains isolated from the above two soil samples were phylogenetically related to six different genera. All the isolates were psychro-, halo- and alkalitolerant. Amylase, lipase and urease activities were detected in the majority of the strains. Long chain, saturated, unsaturated and branched fatty acids were predominant in the psychrotolerant bacteria.

Three 16S rRNA gene clone libraries (P1L, P4L and P8L) were constructed using three soil samples (P1S, P4S and P8S) collected near Pindari glacier, Himalayas. The three libraries yielded a total of 703 clones. Actinobacteria, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were common to the three libraries. In addition to the above P1L and P8L shared the phyla Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Gemmatimonadetes and Planctomycetes. Phyla Chlamydiae, Chlorobi, Chloroflexi, Dictyoglomi, Fibrobacteres, Nitrospirae, Verrucomicrobia, candidate division SPAM and candidate TM7s TM7a phylum were present only in P1L. Rarefaction analysis indicated that the bacterial diversity in P4S and P8S soil samples was representative of the sample. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that P1S and P8S were different from P4S soil sample. PCA also indicated that arsenic content, pH, Cr and altitude influence the observed differences in the percentage of specific OTUs in the three 16S rRNA gene clone libraries. The observed bacterial diversity was similar to that observed for other Himalayan and non-polar cold habitats. A total of 40 strains of bacteria were isolated from the above three soil samples and based on the morphology 20 bacterial strains were selected for further characterization. The 20 bacteria belonged to 12 different genera. All the isolates were psychro-, halo- and alkalitolerant. Amylase and urease activities were detected in majority of the strains but lipase and protease activities were not detected. Long chain, saturated, unsaturated and branched fatty acids were predominant in the psychrotolerant bacteria.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine if there is a difference in anxiety during urodynamics in women given lavender aromatherapy (lavender) versus placebo. METHODS: This was a randomized, controlled trial of women scheduled for urodynamic testing with baseline anxiety. Participants rated their anxiety and pain immediately before the examination and then were randomized to lavender or placebo. Anxiety and pain were assessed immediately after catheter placement and 15 minutes after termination of the study. RESULTS: Data for 40 women who received lavender and 38 women who received placebo were available for analysis. Decrease in anxiety from baseline to catheter placement (-2 vs -0.5, P = 0.01) and 15 minutes post procedure was significantly greater in the lavender group. Postprocedure anxiety was lower in the lavender group compared with controls (0 vs 0.5, P = 0.001). No differences were seen in pain. CONCLUSIONS: Lavender aromatherapy reduces anxiety during urodynamics.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate whether receiving a clinical diagnosis of interstitial cystitis (IC) or bladder pain syndrome (BPS) improves patients' symptoms, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), or ability to cope with their symptoms. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, participants with self-reported IC/BPS completed an online questionnaire recalling their perceived change in symptoms after diagnosis and treatment. The questionnaire included demographic information, overall HRQOL measured on a visual analog scale (VAS), O'Leary-Sant Interstitial Cystitis Problem Index, the Urinary Impact Questionnaire, and questions regarding patient beliefs about diagnosis. HRQOL and symptom impact scales were compared before and after diagnosis and treatment. Demographic data, symptom data, and beliefs were examined for correlation with improvement in quality of life after diagnosis. RESULTS: A total of 1052 participants initiated the survey and were included in the analysis; most of them identified as female, non-Hispanic, and white (90%). Before symptom onset, median VAS HRQOL score was 87 (interquartile range [IQR], 77-95). Median scores nadired at 34 (IQR, 20-59) after symptom onset before diagnosis, but improved to 61 after diagnosis and treatment (IQR, 38-74; all P < 0.001). Scores remained stable after diagnosis and initiation of treatment with a median score of 65 at the time of survey (IQR, 37-80; P > 0.05). Age, insurance type, and improvement in scores on the symptom impact scale predicted improvement in HRQOL after diagnosis and treatment in the multivariable model. CONCLUSIONS: Participants reported improvements on global and symptom-specific quality of life measures after diagnosis and treatment for IC/BPS.

The bacterial diversity of two soil samples collected from the periphery of the Roopkund glacial lake and one soil sample from the surface of the Roopkund Glacier in the Himalayan ranges was determined by constructing three 16S rRNA gene clone libraries. The three clone libraries yielded a total of 798 clones belonging to 25 classes. Actinobacteria was the most predominant class (>10% of the clones) in the three libraries. In the library from the glacial soil, class Betaproteobacteria (24.2%) was the most predominant. The rarefaction analysis indicated coverage of 43.4 and 41.2% in the samples collected from the periphery of the lake thus indicating a limited bacterial diversity covered; at the same time, the coverage of 98.4% in the glacier sample indicated most of the diversity was covered. Further, the bacterial diversity in the Roopkund glacier soil was low, but was comparable with the bacterial diversity of a few other glaciers. The results of principal component analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene clone library data, percentages of OTUs and biogeochemical data revealed that the lake soil samples were different from the glacier soil sample and the biogeochemical properties affected the diversity of microbial communities in the soil samples.

Kala-azar is one of the major public health problem in Bangladesh. But the diagnosis of the problem often is difficult, unusual and time consuming, a simple, noninvasive, easy to perform, reliable and rapid diagnostic test has been a long-felt need of the clinicians. Therefore, the present study was conducted to see the sensitivity and specificity of Latex Agglutination test (KAtex) to detect leishmanial antigen from urine of kala-azar cases. The study was carried out in the department of Paediatrics, Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital, Bangladesh during July to December, 2008. A total of 100 urine samples were collected of which 50 were confirmed kala-azar cases and 50 were age and sex matched controls. Out of 50 kala-azar cases 47 showed positive result of KAtex. The test was also positive in 01 out of 30 healthy controls. None of the febrile controls was positive by KAtex. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of the test using presence of LD bodies in splenic and/or bone marrow aspirate as gold standard were 94%, 98%, 97.91% and 94.23% respectively. KAtex is simple, noninvasive, easy to perform, rapid and reliable test for diagnosing kala-azar in endemic area and useful for small, less equipped laboratories as well as for the laboratories with better facilities.

Puerperal sepsis is an important cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in developing countries. This study was undertaken to isolate and identify the anaerobic bacterial agents of puerperal sepsis among the patients admitted in Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) during the period from July 2006 to June 2007. Endocervical swabs/secretions were collected from 50 cases of puerperal sepsis and were cultured anaerobically. Anaerobiasis was done by using gas pack (BD GAS PAK TM EZ) in anaerobic jar. Out of 50 samples, 42(84%) yielded growth in cultures. Among 42 culture positive cases, 20(40%) were Aerobic organisms and 22(44%) were mixed, i.e., Aerobic and Anaerobic bacteria. The isolated Anaerobic organisms were Peptostreptococcus 14(63.63%), Bacteroides fragilis 3(13.64%), Prevotella melaninogenica 3(13.64%) and Clostridium perfringens 2(9.09%). As a preliminary study, it was observed that anaerobic culture could be carried out with available logistic arrangement. So, it was recommended to design further study on anaerobic bacterial isolation with particular emphasis on their antimicrobial susceptibility.

Culturable bacterial diversity of seven marine sediment samples of Kongsfjorden and a sediment and a soil sample from Ny-Alesund, Svalbard, Arctic was studied. The bacterial abundance in the marine sediments of Kongsfjorden varied marginally (0.5 x 10(3)-1.3 x 10(4) cfu/g sediment) and the bacterial number in the two samples collected from the shore of Ny-Alesund also was very similar (0.6 x 10(4) and 3.4 x 10(4), respectively). From the nine samples a total of 103 bacterial isolates were obtained and these isolates could be grouped in to 47 phylotypes based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence belonging to 4 phyla namely Actinobacteria, Bacilli, Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria. Representatives of the 47 phylotypes varied in their growth temperature range (4-37 degrees C), in their tolerance to NaCl (0.3-2 M NaCl) and growth pH range (2-11). Representatives of 26 phylotypes exhibited amylase and lipase activity either at 5 or 20 degrees C or at both the temperatures. A few of the representatives exhibited amylase and/or lipase activity only at 5 degrees C. None of the phylotypes exhibited protease activity. Most of the phylotypes (38) were pigmented. Fatty acid profile studies indicated that short chain fatty acids, unsaturated fatty acids, branched fatty acids, the cyclic and the cis fatty acids are predominant in the psychrophilic bacteria.

A recently developed DOT enzyme immunoassay known as "Typhidot" for detecting IgM antibody against 50 KDa OMP antigen of Salmonella typhi, was evaluated on 100 clinically suspected typhoid fever cases and 40 age-sex matched controls, in the Department of Microbiology, Mymensingh Medical College during, the period from June 2006 to July 2007. Blood culture, Widal test, and DOT EIA for IgM test were performed in all patients. Among 100 clinically suspected typhoid fever cases, 35 were subsequently confirmed on the basis of positive blood culture for S. typhi and/or significant rising titre of Widal test. The DOT EIA IgM test could produce results within 1 hour. The result of the DOT EIA IgM test showed a good diagnostic value for typhoid fever. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value of the test was found as 91.42%, 90.00%, 88.88% and 92.30% respectively. On the other hand corresponding values for Widal test were of 42.85%, 85.00%, 71.42% and 62.96% respectively. Thus, The DOT EIA IgM seems to be a practical alternative to Widal test for early diagnosis of typhoid fever.
