RESUMO

AIM: To discuss nurses' use of networks to address nursing recruitment and retention in London, UK. DESIGN: Qualitative evaluation of the Capital Nurse programme reporting on 30 narrative interviews with executive, clinical and student nurses in 2019. RESULTS: Executive nurses within the Capital Nurse programme recognized the importance of sociomaterial contexts in the health and social care system in London and worked strategically across these contexts to achieve change. Supported through the Capital Nurse programme, executive nurses from health organizations across London initiated collaborative working to improve recruitment and retention. Primarily by designing and delivering sociomaterial products (organizational and educational) to support nurses to build a career in London. Drawing on ideas from actor network theory, in particular sociomaterial contexts, nurses' actions at all levels to develop and sustain networks to address nursing recruitment and retention across the NHS in London are described. CONCLUSIONS: Capital Nurse supported collaborative working both within single organizations and across organizations in London. There is evidence of change in how nurses across the capital work together to improve patient care, improve recruitment and retention. Findings may resonate with nurses in other settings who seek to address the problem of recruitment and retention. They show how nurses coming together in networks to effect changes in practice can work successfully. IMPACT: Nurses' use of networks led to novel models of communication and action to address the problems of recruitment and retention in London. We argue that sociomateriality should be considered outside the clinical practice setting, as part of nurses' professional development and organizational practice, that is how they plan their career, how they address recruitment and retention, how they communicate across organizations about nursing issues. NO PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: This was an evaluation of a staff development project in London, which sought to elicit nurses' experiences of participation in Capital Nurse.

RESUMO

Preceptorship was first promoted as part of the Project 2000 reforms, and evidence suggests it remains valuable to newly qualified nurses. Although there is a lack of research of its effect on patient care, what research there is highlights various positive aspects of preceptorship programmes for newly qualified nurses, preceptors, and organisations. This article summarises the results of a scoping review of the literature, published since 2009, on preceptorship. It also describes a preceptorship initiative in London led by Health Education England.

RESUMO

Kinases represent attractive targets for drug discovery. Eight small-molecule kinase inhibitors are currently marketed in the area of oncology, and numerous others are in clinical trials. Characterization of the selectivity profiles of these compounds is important to target appropriate patient populations and to reduce the potential of toxicity due to off-target effects. The authors describe the development, validation, and utilization of a biochemical kinase assay panel for the selectivity profiling of inhibitors. The panel was developed as 29 radiometric Flashplate assays, and then an initial 13 were transitioned to a nonradiometric Caliper mobility shift assay format. Generation of high-quality data from the panel is detailed along with a comparison of the assay formats. Both assay technologies were found to be suitable for panel screening, but mobility shift assays yielded higher data quality. The selectivity data generated here should be useful in computational modeling and help facilitate, in conjunction with sequence and structural information, the rational design of inhibitors with well-defined selectivity profiles.

RESUMO

Aim This study set out to gain insight into views held by children's nursing students, lecturers and clinically based nurse mentors about interprofessional education (IPE). Method A qualitative research design was undertaken. Small focus groups were held with pre-registration children's nursing students, and semi-structured interviews with university lecturers and clinically based nurse mentors to find out information about their understanding of IPE. Findings Participants not only valued IPE, but they agreed that it had the potential to positively affect the care of children, young people and their families. Conclusion It is important that professionals collaborate to ensure students receive high quality IPE learning experiences.

RESUMO

AIM: To assess the preparation required to ensure a workforce of nurses who can provide high quality out-of-hospital services for children and young people. METHODS: Using mixed methods, questionnaires were sent to young people and community children's nursing teams, interviews were conducted with academic staff and clinical nurses, and focus groups were undertaken with pre-registration children's nursing students. FINDINGS: Nurses' communication skills and clinical abilities were most important to young people. There is a range of opinions about optimum out-of-hospital clinical experience. Pre- and post-qualification education and recruitment in this area, therefore, need attention. CONCLUSION: Out-of-hospital care presents problems, but is developing rapidly. Adequate, updated training, supervision and resources are needed.
