PURPOSE: To assess the relationship between dislocation and functional outcomes in supination-external rotation (SER) ankle fractures. METHODS: A retrospective case series study was performed on patients with ankle fractures treated surgically at a large trauma center from January 2015 to December 2021. The inclusion criteria were young and middle-aged patients of 18-65 years with SER ankle fractures that can be classified by Lauge-Hansen classification and underwent surgery at our trauma center. Exclusion criteria were serious life-threatening diseases, open fractures, fractures delayed for more than 3 weeks, fracture sites ≥2, etc. Then patients were divided into dislocation and no-dislocation groups. Patient demographics, injury characteristics, surgery-related outcomes, and postoperative functional outcomes were collected and analyzed. The functional outcomes of SER ankle fractures were assessed postoperatively at 1-year face-to-face follow-up using the foot and ankle outcome score (FAOS) and American orthopedic foot and ankle society score and by 2 experienced orthopedic physicians. Relevant data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.0 by Chi-square or t-test. RESULTS: During the study period, there were 371 ankle fractures. Among them, 190 (51.2%) were SER patterns with 69 (36.3%) combined with dislocations. Compared with the no-dislocation group, the dislocation group showed no statistically significant differences in gender, age composition, fracture type, preoperative complications with diabetes, smoking history, preoperative waiting time, operation time, and length of hospital stay (all p > 0.05), but a significantly higher Lauge-Hansen injury grade (p < 0.001) and syndesmotic screw fixation rate (p = 0.033). Moreover, the functional recovery was poorer, revealing a significantly lower FAOS in the sport/rec scale (p < 0.001). Subgroup analysis showed that among SER IV ankle fracture patients, FAOS was much lower in pain (p = 0.042) and sport/rec scales (p < 0.001) for those with dislocations. American orthopedic foot and ankle society score revealed no significant difference between dislocation and no-dislocation patients. CONCLUSION: Dislocation in SER ankle fractures suggests more severe injury and negatively affects functional recovery, mainly manifested as more pain and poorer motor function, especially in SER IV ankle cases.

Osteoporosis (OP) is a systemic disease characterized by decreased bone mass and degeneration of bone microstructure. In recent years, more and more researches have focused on the close relationship between gut microbiota (GM) and the occurrence and progression of OP, and the regulation of probiotics and prebiotics on bone metabolism has gradually become a research hotspot. Based on the influence of brain-gut-bone axis on bone metabolism, this review expounds the potential mechanisms of probiotics and prebiotics on OP from next perspectives: regulation of intestinal metabolites, regulation of intestinal epithelial barrier function, involvement of neuromodulation, involvement of immune regulation and involvement of endocrine regulation, so as to provide a novel and promising idea for the prevention and treatment of OP in the future.

Osteoporosis (OP) is the most prevalent metabolic bone disease, characterized by the low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue. Glucocorticoid (GC) clinically acts as one of the anti-inflammatory, immune-modulating, and therapeutic drugs, whereas the long-term use of GC may cause rapid bone resorption, followed by prolonged and profound suppression of bone formation, resulting in the GC-induced OP (GIOP). GIOP ranks the first among secondary OP and is a pivotal risk for fracture, as well as high disability rate and mortality, at both societal and personal levels, vital costs. Gut microbiota (GM), known as the "second gene pool" of human body, is highly correlated with maintaining the bone mass and bone quality, and the relation between GM and bone metabolism has gradually become a research hotspot. Herein, combined with recent studies and based on the cross-linking relationship between GM and OP, this review is aimed to discuss the potential mechanisms of GM and its metabolites on the OP, as well as the moderating effects of GC on GM, thereby providing an emerging thought for prevention and treatment of GIOP.

BACKGROUND: Surgery is the preferred treatment option for the elderly patients with hip fractures. However, the choice of general anesthesia (GA) or regional anesthesia (RA) remains controversial. The quality of evidence has further improved with the advent of several high-quality randomized clinical trials (RCTs) in the last two years. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes of two anesthetic techniques in elderly patients undergoing hip fracture surgeries. METHODS: Eligible studies were identified from PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, EMBASE and reference lists from January 2000 to June 2022 in this current systematic review and meta-analysis. The outcomes included the surgery-related outcomes (duration of surgery, duration of anesthesia, intraoperative blood loss and number of transfusions) and postoperative outcomes (30-day mortality, postoperative delirium,cardiovascular events and other complications). RESULTS: A total of 10 RCTs were included, and a total of 3594 patients were analyzed. RA was associated with shorter duration of surgery, shorter length of hospital stays and less intraoperative blood loss compared to GA. There were no significant differences between the two groups in the number of blood transfusions, duration of anesthesia, 30-day mortality or postoperative delirium. CONCLUSIONS: Our pooled analysis identified no significant differences in terms of the safety between RA and GA, while RA reduces intraoperative blood loss, length of hospital stays and duration of surgery. These results suggest that RA appears to be preferable for the elderly patients with hip fractures.

Osteoporosis (OP) is a systemic bone disease characterized by the decreased bone mass and destruction of bone microstructure, which tends to result in the enhanced bone fragility and related fractures, as well as high disability rate and mortality. Exercise is one of the most common, reliable and cost-effective interventions for the prevention and treatment of OP currently, and numerous studies have revealed the close association between gut microbiota (GM) and bone metabolism recently. Moreover, exercise can alter the structure, composition and abundance of GM, and further influence the body health via GM and its metabolites, and the changes of GM also depend on the choice of exercise modes. Herein, combined with relevant studies and based on the inseparable relationship between exercise intervention-GM-OP, this review is aimed to discuss the moderating effects and potential mechanisms of exercise intervention on GM and bone metabolism, as well as the interaction between them.

Osteoporosis is a systemic metabolic bone disease characterized by the descending bone mass and destruction of bone microstructure, which tends to result in the increased bone fragility and associated fractures, as well as high disability rate and mortality. The relation between gut microbiota and bone metabolism has gradually become a research hotspot, and it has been verified that gut microbiota is closely associated with reduction of bone mass and incidence of osteoporosis recently. As a novel "organ transplantation" technique, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) mainly refers to the transplantation of gut microbiota from healthy donors to recipients with gut microbiota imbalance, so that the gut microbiota in recipients can be reshaped and play a normal function, and further prevent or treat the diseases related to gut microbiota disorder. Herein, based on the gut-bone axis and proven regulatory effects of gut microbiota on osteoporosis, this review expounds relevant basic researches and clinical practice of FMT on osteoporosis, thus demonstrating the potentials of FMT as a therapeutic option for osteoporosis and further providing certain reference for the future researches.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing evidence provided by recent high-quality studies, the intravenous iron appears to be a reliable therapy for blood administration in geriatric patients with hip fractures. Here, this systematic review and meta-analysis were aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of intravenous iron in geriatric patients sustaining hip fractures. METHODS: Potential pertinent literatures evaluating the effects of intravenous iron in the geriatric patients undergoing hip fractures were identified from Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, and Scopus. We performed a pairwise meta-analysis using fixed- and random-effects models, and the pooling of data was carried out by using RevMan 5.1. RESULTS: Four randomized controlled trials and four observational studies conform to inclusion criteria. The results of meta-analysis showed that intravenous iron reduced transfusion rates compared to the control group, yet the result did not reach statistical significance. The intravenous iron was related to lower transfusion volumes, shorter length of stay, and a reduced risk of nosocomial infections. And there was no significant difference in terms of the mortality and other complications between the treatment group and the control group. CONCLUSION: Current evidence suggests that intravenous iron reduces the transfusion volume, length of hospital stay, and risk of nosocomial infections. It takes about 7 days for intravenous iron to elevate hemoglobin by 1 g/dl and about 1 month for 2 g/dl. The safety profile of intravenous iron is also reassuring, and additional high-quality studies are needed.

Supination external rotation (SER) type ankle fracture is the most common ankle fracture in the Lauge-Hansen classification and is often accompanied with syndesmotic injury. However, the mechanism of this injury is indistinct and a suggestive role can be given by preoperative imaging. This study was to preoperatively predict whether SER type ankle fractures are accompanied with syndesmotic injuries by the means of lateral malleolus fracture mapping. One hundred and forty-eight patients diagnosed with SER type ankle fractures were retrospectively enrolled in this study. The baseline data were collected and computed tomography data were reconstructed in 3-dimensional (3D) model. Patients were divided into stable and unstable groups according to intraoperative Cotton test and whether the inferior tibiofibular screw was placed. All fracture lines were superimposed on the ankle template to create a fracture map, and the data on the fracture map were further measured. Logistic regression was conducted to identify relevant factors and the cutoff values were given using receiver operating characteristic curves. Forty-one patients were enrolled in the unstable group and 107 patients were enrolled in the stable group. The lateral malleolus fracture lines of the unstable group were higher and steeper than that in the stable group on lateral and posterior views. The fracture height of the posterior cortex and peak height were the significant contributing factors, and the cut-off values of posterior cortex, peak height and inclination angle were 40.35 mm (sensitivity: 78%, specificity: 82%), 55.34 mm (sensitivity: 85%, specificity: 70%) and 55.6° (sensitivity: 66%, specificity: 86%), respectively. In general, when the fracture lines of the lateral malleolus were high and steep, it was usually indicative of a syndesmotic injury and can be predicted by the preoperative 3D reconstruction of fracture height of posterior cortex, peak height and inclination angle. If the cut-off values of these indicators are exceeded, the syndesmotic injuries may be presented and need to be verified in the intraoperative Cotton test to decide whether to insert an inferior tibiofibular screw.

There is an inseparable link between bone metabolism and gut microbiota, and the supplementation of probiotics exhibits a significant role in maintaining the homeostasis of gut microbiota and inhibiting bone loss. This study aims to explore the preventive and therapeutic potentials and the specific mechanisms of Rothia on osteoporosis. The mice models of osteoporosis induced by ovariectomy (OVX) were built, and the regular (once a day) and quantitative (200 µL/d) gavage of Rothia was performed for 8 weeks starting from 1 week after OVX. Microcomputed tomography was used to analyze the bone mass and bone microstructure of mice in each group after sacrifice. Histological staining and immunohistochemistry were then applied to identify the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, intestinal permeability, and osteogenic and osteoclastic activities of mice. The collected feces of mice in each group were used for 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing to detect the alterations in composition, abundance, and diversity of gut microbiota. This study demonstrated that the gavage of Rothia alleviated bone loss in mice with OVX-induced osteoporosis, improved OVX-induced intestinal mucosal barrier injury, optimized intestinal permeability (zonula occludens protein 1 and occludin), reduced intestinal inflammation (tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1ß), and regulated imbalance of gut microbiota. Based on "gut-bone" axis, this study revealed that regular and quantitative gavage of Rothia can relieve bone loss in mice with OVX-induced osteoporosis by repairing the intestinal mucosal barrier injury, optimizing the intestinal permeability, inhibiting the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and improving the disorder of gut microbiota.

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) are prevalent in geriatric patients with hip fractures. Low oxygen level is one of the most important risk factors for PPCs. Prone position has been proven efficacy in improving oxygenation and delaying the progress of pulmonary diseases, especially in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome induced by multiple etiologies. The application of awake prone position (APP) has also attracted widespread attention in recent years. A randomized controlled trial (RCT) will be carried out to measure the effect of postoperative APP in a population of geriatric patients undergoing hip fracture surgery. METHODS: This is an RCT. Patients older than 65 years old admitted through the emergency department and diagnosed with an intertrochanteric or femoral neck fracture will be eligible for enrollment and assigned randomly to the control group with routine postoperative management of orthopedics or APP group with an additional prone position for the first three consecutive postoperative days (PODs). Patients receiving conservative treatment will not be eligible for enrollment. We will record the difference in the patient's room-air-breathing arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) values between the 4th POD (POD 4) and emergency visits, the morbidity of PPCs and other postoperative complications, and length of stay. The incidence of PPCs, readmission rates, and mortality rates will be followed up for 90 PODs. DISCUSSION: We describe the protocol for a single-center RCT that will evaluate the efficacy of postoperative APP treatment in reducing pulmonary complications and improving oxygenation in geriatric patients with hip fractures. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This protocol was approved by the independent ethics committee (IEC) for Clinical Research of Zhongda Hospital, Affiliated to Southeast University, and is registered on the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry. The findings of the trial will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journals. ETHICS APPROVAL NUMBER: 2021ZDSYLL203-P01 TRIAL REGISTRATION: ChiCTR ChiCTR2100049311 . Registered on 29 July 2021. TRIAL STATUS: Recruiting. Recruitment is expected to be completed in December 2024.

Age-related tendon disorder, a primary motor system disease, is characterized by biological changes in the tendon tissue due to senescence and seriously affects the quality of life of the elderly. The pathogenesis of this disease is not well-understood. Tendon stem/progenitor cells (TSPCs) exhibit multi-differentiation capacity. These cells are important cellular components of the tendon because of their roles in tendon tissue homeostasis, remodeling, and repair. Previous studies revealed alterations in the biological characteristics and tenogenic differentiation potential of TSPCs in senescent tendon tissue, in turn contributing to insufficient differentiation of TSPCs into tenocytes. Poor tendon repair can result in age-related tendinopathies. Therefore, targeting of senescent TSPCs may restore the tenogenic differentiation potential of these cells and achieve homeostasis of the tendon tissue to prevent or treat age-related tendinopathy. In this review, we summarize the biological characteristics of TSPCs and histopathological changes in age-related tendinopathy, as well as the potential mechanisms through which TSPCs contribute to senescence. This information may promote further exploration of innovative treatment strategies to rescue TSPCs from senescence.

It has been demonstrated that the disturbance of gut microbiota (GM) is closely related to the reduction of bone mass and incidence of osteoporosis (OP). The aim of this study is to investigate whether the supplementation of Prevotella histicola (Ph) can prevent the bone loss in mice with ovariectomy (OVX)-mediated OP, and further explore relevant mechanisms. Regular (once a day for 8 consecutive weeks) and quantitative (200 µL/d) perfusion of Ph (the bacteria that orally gavaged) was conducted starting from 1 week after the construction of mice models. Bone mass and bone microstructure were detected by Micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT). Expressions of intestinal permeability, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and osteogenic and osteoclastic activities of mice were analyzed by histological staining and immunohistochemistry (IHC). 16S rRNA high throughput sequencing technique was applied to analyze the alterations of composition, abundance, and diversity of collected feces. Regular and quantitative perfusion of Ph mitigated the bone loss in mice with OVX-mediated OP. Compared with OVX + PBS group, perfusion of Ph repressed osteoclastogenesis and promoted osteogenesis, reduced release of pro-inflammatory cytokine cytokines (interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)), and reversed expressions of tight junction proteins (zonula occludens protein 1 (ZO-1) and Occludin). Besides, the perfusion of Ph improved the composition, abundance, and diversity of GM. Collectively, this study revealed that regular and quantitative perfusion of Ph can improve the bone loss in mice with OVX-mediated OP by repairing intestinal mucosal barrier damage, optimizing intestinal permeability, inhibiting release of pro-osteoclastogenic cytokines, and improving disturbance of GM.

Background: Ankle fracture-dislocations are one of the most severe types of ankle injuries. Compared to the simple ankle fractures, ankle fracture-dislocations are usually more severely traumatized and can cause worse functional outcomes. The purpose of this study was to review the previous literatures to understand the anatomy, mechanisms, treatment, and functional outcomes associated with ankle fracture-dislocations. Methods: The available literatures from January 1985 to December 2021 in three main medical databases were searched and analyzed. The detailed information was extracted for each article, such as researchers, age, gender, groups, type of study, type of center research, level of evidence, significant findings, study aim, cause of injury, time from injury to surgery, type of fracture, direction of dislocation, follow-up, postoperative complications and functional evaluation scores. Results: A total of 15 studies (1,089 patients) met the inclusion criteria. Only one study was a prospective randomized trial. The top-ranked cause of injury was high-energy injury (21.3%). Moreover, the most frequent type of fracture in ankle dislocations was supination-external rotation (SER) ankle fracture (43.8%), while the most common directions of dislocation were lateral (50%) and posterior (38.9%). Conclusions: Collectively, most ankle fracture-dislocations are caused by high-energy injuries and usually have poor functional outcomes. The mechanism of injury can be dissected by the ankle anatomy and Lauge-Hansen's classification. The treatment of ankle fracture-dislocations still requires more detailed and rational solutions due to the urgency of occurrence, the severity of injury, and the postoperative complications.

Background: Osteoporosis (OP) is a systemic metabolic bone disease characterized by decreased bone mass and destruction of bone microstructure, which tends to result in enhanced bone fragility and related fractures. The postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) has a relatively high proportion, and numerous studies reveal that estrogen-deficiency is related to the imbalance of gut microbiota (GM), impaired intestinal mucosal barrier function and enhanced inflammatory reactivity. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear and the existing interventions are also scarce. Methods: In this study, we established a mouse model induced by ovariectomy (OVX) and conducted fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) by gavage every day for 8 weeks. Subsequently, the bone mass and microarchitecture of mice were evaluated by the micro computed tomography (Micro-CT). The intestinal permeability, pro-osteoclastogenic cytokines expression, osteogenic and osteoclastic activities were detected by the immunohistological analysis, histological examination, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and western blot analysis accordingly. Additionally, the composition and abundance of GM were assessed by 16S rRNA sequencing and the fecal short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) level was measured by metabolomics. Results: Our results demonstrated that FMT inhibited the excessive osteoclastogenesis and prevented the OVX-induced bone loss. Specifically, compared with the OVX group, FMT enhanced the expressions of tight junction proteins (zonula occludens protein 1 (ZO-1) and Occludin) and suppressed the release of pro-osteoclastogenic cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß)). Furthermore, FMT also optimized the composition and abundance of GM, and increased the fecal SCFAs level (mainly acetic acid and propionic acid). Conclusions: Collectively, based on GM-bone axis, FMT prevented the OVX-induced bone loss by correcting the imbalance of GM, improving the SCFAs level, optimizing the intestinal permeability and suppressing the release of pro-osteoclastogenic cytokines, which may be an alternative option to serve as a promising candidate for the prevention and treatment of PMOP in the future. The translational potential of this article: This study indicates the ingenious involvement of GM-bone axis in PMOP and the role of FMT in reshaping the status of GM and ameliorating the bone loss in OVX-induced mice. FMT might serve as a promising candidate for the prevention and treatment of PMOP in the future.

Currently, little is known regarding the association between dietary choline intake and osteoporosis in elderly individuals, as well as if such intakes affect bone health and result in fractures. This study was aimed to examine associations between daily dietary choline intake and osteoporosis in elderly individuals. A total of 31 034 participants from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) during 2005-2010 were enrolled, and 3179 participants with complete data and aged 65 years and older were identified. Baseline characteristics and dietary intake data were obtained through method of in-home administered questionnaires. Of 3179 individuals with a mean age of 73.7 ± 5.6 years, female (P < 0.001) and non-hispanic white (P < 0.001) occupied a higher proportion in the osteoporosis group. The logistic regression analysis indicated that the prevalence of osteoporosis in three tertile categories with gradually enhanced dietary choline intake was decreased progressively (P for trend <0.001). The restricted cubic spline (RCS) showed that the risk of osteoporosis generally decreased with increasing daily dietary choline intake (P < 0.001), while this trend was not apparent in relation between the daily dietary choline intake and risk of hip fracture (P = 0.592). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis identified a daily dietary choline intake of 232.1 mg as the optimal cutoff value for predicting osteoporosis. Our nationwide data suggested that a lower level of daily dietary choline intake was positively associated with the increased risk of osteoporosis in the US elderly population.

OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study was aimed to update the assessment of prevalence, characteristics, and risk factors of the elderly with hip fractures in a non-institutionalized American population. METHODS: This current study included a total of 31,034 participants from the existing National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 2005 to 2010, and 4,265 participants aged 65 years and older were ultimately identified. Their condition of hip fractures was determined by method of questionnaires according to the orthopedic surgeons' diagnosis, and related epidemiological and demographic data were further collected. The univariate analysis was used to screen the risk factors of hip fractures in the elderly, and the logistic regression model was established to conduct the multivariate analysis. RESULTS: Of the total 4,265 participants with clear information of hip fractures in elderly, 127 individuals with hip fractures were identified according to results of questionnaires, exhibiting a prevalence of 28.49 per 1,000 (95% confidence interval [CI]=21.38-35.60) for males and 31.03 per 1,000 (95% CI=23.72-38.35) for females. The mean age of the elderly with hip fractures was 77.12±5.88 years and tumble (48.0%) was the primary factor. In univariate analysis, age, race, smoking, drinking alcohol, and combined with osteoporosis were regarded as risk factors. Multivariate analysis showed that age (80 years and older), living alone, smoking, combined with diabetes and osteoporosis were the independent risk factors. CONCLUSION: Our nationwide data indicate the prevalence of hip fractures in the elderly is generally on the rise, and the female occupies a higher proportion. Age (especially aged 80 years and older), race (mainly Non-Hispanic white), smoking, drinking alcohol, living alone, combined with diabetes and osteoporosis may be closely linked to the occurrence of hip fractures in the elderly, although these variables still need to be verified in further prospective investigations.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the endemic situation of malaria in Hubei Province in 2013, so as to put forward effective elimination strategies and measures. METHODS: The data of malaria cases were searched from the Disease Reporting Information System of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and analyzed with the descriptive epidemiological method for the epidemiological characteristics of malaria in Hubei Province in 2013. RESULTS: A total of 129 malaria cases were reported in Hubei Province in 2013 with the incidence of 0.02/10,000, and all of them were imported cases, in which 86 cases with Plasmodium falciparum infection, 32 cases with P. vivax infection, 7 cases with P. ovale infection and 4 cases with P. malariae infection. The distribution of malaria cases was concentrated in Wuhan City (76 cases), Yichang City (10 cases), Xiangyang City (7 cases) and Huangshi City (6 cases), accounting for 76.74% of the total cases. There was no significant seasonal variation in the reporting time of the cases. Totally 99.22% of the cases were male, the age distribution concentrated mainly on 20-49 years. The occupation distribution concentrated mainly on the worker, farmer, cadre staff and migrant worker. The main original areas of the imported cases were Africa (111 cases, 86.05%) and Asia (17 cases, 13.18%). CONCLUSIONS: There is no local malaria cases reported in Hubei Province in 2013, however, the imported malaria cases are increased. Therefore, it is necessary to further strengthen the multi-sector collaboration of vector control, while the health education should be intensified especially in the key population.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the schistosome infectivity of the water body of the Yangtze River and Hanbeihe River during flooding in Hubei Province. METHODS: The Oncomelania snail status was investigated in 17 sites of the Yangtze River and Hanbei River, and the infectivity of schistosome in sentinel mice was also determined. RESULTS: In the Yangtze River and Hanbei River, the average densities of living snails were 0.35 snails/0.1 m2 and 0.67 snails/0.1 m2 respectively, and the average infection rates of snails were 0.33% and 0.05%, respectively. The sentinel mouse surveillances were carried out twice in 10 sites of the Yangtze River. During the first surveillance the infection rate was 5.5% with 4 positive environment sites, and that was 5.5% with 7 positive environment sites in the second surveillance. The sentinel mouse surveillance was carried out once in 7 sites of the Hanbeihe River, and the infection rate was 11.9% with 4 positive environment sites. CONCLUSIONS: By monitoring schistosome infection of the water body, we can understand the threat of environment and provide warning information to prevent from the outbreak and spread of acute schistosomiasis. We can also indirectly get many messages about the quality of snail investigation and the effect of mollusciciding.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the endemic situation of schistosomiasis in surveillance sites of Hubei Province in 2010. METHODS: According to The Scheme of Schistosomiasis Surveillance in Hubei Province, 207 endemic villages were selected as surveillance sites, where the surveys of residents, livestock and Oncomelania snails were carried out. RESULTS: In the 207 surveillance sites, the infection rates of residents and cattle were 1.01% and 1.14%, respectively, the densities of living snails and infected snails were 0.50 and 0.000 4 snails/0.1 m2, respectively, and the infection rate of snails was 0.08%. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with that in 2009, the endemic situation of schistosomiasis in Hubei Province in 2010 has decreased obviously, but as the repeatability of the disease, the control of infectious sources and the management of cattle should be strengthened, as well as the snail control.
