Anxiety and obesity are two current phenomena. They are among the important public health problems with increasing prevalence worldwide. Although it is claimed that there are strong relations between them, the mechanism of this relationship has not been fully clarified yet. On the other hand, the effect of this relationship on the offspring has been another research subject. In this study, obese zebrafish were obtained by feeding two different diets, one containing high amount of lipid (HF) and the other containing high amount of carbohydrate (HK), and their anxiety levels were evaluated. To establish a relationship between these two phenomena, in addition to histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis in the brain tissues of fish, the transcription levels of some genes related to lipid and carbohydrate metabolisms were determined. In addition, offspring were taken from obese zebrafish and studied to examine the effect of parental obesity on offspring. As a result, it was observed that the HC diet, causing more weight increase than the HF diet, showed an anxiolytic while the HF diet an anxiogenic effect. It was suggested that the probable cause of this situation may be the regulatory effect on the appetite-related genes depending on the upregulation severity of the PPAR gene family based on the diet content. In addition, it was also suggested that it may have contributed to this process in neuron degenerations caused by oxidative stress. Regarding effects on offspring, it can be concluded that HF diet-induced obesity has more negative effects on the next generation than the HC diet.Level of evidenceNo Level of evidence: animal study.

The study aims to investigate the prevalence and patterns of substance use among medical students and to examine associated psychiatric symptoms. It has been observed that depression and psychoticism scores have a significant effect on smoking, and interpersonal sensitivity-hostility-paranoid ideation scores have a significant effect on drinking. It has been shown that interpersonal sensitivity and depression scores are more predictive of mono-and poly-substance use. Revealing the relationship between tobacco, alcohol, poly-substance use, and psychiatric symptoms in the medical school sample shows the importance of practices aimed at increasing students' awareness of their psychiatric symptoms and providing access to psychiatric services.

Purpose: Higher homocysteine (HHcy) levels have been detected in bipolar disorder (BD) patients, and BD patients show circadian rhythm disorders even during remission. Here, we determined the homocysteine (Hcy) levels and chronotype of patients with BD during remission and investigated whether this was related to the clinical course of the disease. Materials and methods: In total, 80 BD outpatients were included. Clinical evaluation was conducted using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ). Hcy, folic acid, vitamin B12 levels and protein consumption the day before clinical evaluation were measured.Results and conclusions: HHcy was found in 11 patients (8.8%), most of whom were males (n = 8, 72.7%). During the course of BD, patients with HHcy had significantly more mixed episodes than patients without HHcy (p = .007, z = -2696). In addition, patients with HHcy had significantly lower MEQ scores than patients without HHcy (p = .04, t = 2018). There was no significant difference in chronotype between patients with and without HHcy. The HHcy group had significantly lower levels of vitamin B12 (p = .003, t = 2870). There were no statistically significant differences in daily protein intake and folic acid levels between HHcy and non-HHcy groups. Our study showed a significant relationship between the number of mixed episodes and HHcy. In terms of potential confounds, patients who abused alcohol were excluded, but alcohol consumption was not evaluated. This result should be considered in BD and should be evaluated in larger samples of BD patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Multiple sclerosis(MS) is a progressive, autoimmune, neurodegenerative disease.Studies have suggested that autoimmune diseases play a role in the pathogenesis of Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder(ADHD).We aim to evaluate ADHD symptoms among patients with RRMS(pwRRMS). METHODS: The study included 48 RRMS patients and 54 healthy controls. ADHD symptoms were assessed by self-report questionnaires and performance tests.Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Turgay's Turkish version of Adult-ADD/ADHD (A-ADHD), Barratt Impulsivity Scale (BIS-11), and World Health Organization Quality of Life-Short Form (WHOQoL-Bref) were completed by the participants.Stroop Colour and Word Interference Test - TBAG Form (SCWT); was used for assessing cognitive function by a trained psychiatrist. Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) and Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) were used to evaluate by pwRRMS. RESULTS: PwRRMS had significantly higher attention-deficit scores and poor performance in all SCWT subtests.All SCWT scores were positively correlated with MS duration.A-ADHD-Total scores were negatively correlated with the age of MS diagnosis.A moderate positive correlation was found between falls and A-ADHD-total scores, and psychomotor speed.A moderate negative correlation was found between WHOQoL-Bref scores and BID, FSS, ADHD-Attention Deficit, SCWT-3, SCWT-5, and SCWT-interference.In multivariate linear regression analyzes, attention-deficit predicted EDSS positively, while depressive symptoms, attention-deficit, and psychomotor speed time were negative predictors of physical health quality. CONCLUSIONS: In pwRRMS, cognitive dysfunctions such as response inhibition and intervention control, which are symptoms of attention deficit and impulsivity, have been shown to reduce the overall QoL. Among the strategies to reduce the impact of RRMS disease on patients' lives, it is essential to implement programs to prevent depression and increase cognitive reserve.

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA) has been linked to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, but the effects on cognitive functions and functionality in adult ADHD have not been investigated. We investigated the associations between serum BPA with cognitive functions and functionality in adult ADHD patients. METHODS: The levels of BPA were measured in 45 adult ADHD patients and 45 well-matched healty controls. The relationship between plastic exposure and BPA was also evaluated. Stroop test and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test were applied for neurocognitive evaluation and participants were compared in basic cognitive functions including planning, organization, abstraction, problem solving, strategy development, set shifting, cognitive flexibility, variants of attention, information processing speed, the ability to change perceptual setup and response under interference. Sheehan disability scale was applied for functionality. The association of BPA with test scores was analyzed statistically. RESULTS: Serum BPA levels in adult ADHD patients were found to be significantly higher than in healthy controls. There was no relationship between plastic exposure and BPA levels. BPA levels showed a significant effect on functionality in terms of work field. There were significant differences between the groups in terms of cognitive functions. However, no significant correlation was found between BPA levels and cognitive functions. CONCLUSIONS: BPA is associated with ADHD and affects functionality in the field of work, but larger-scale further studies are needed for its effect on cognitive functions.

OBJECTIVE: In our study, we aimed to evaluate eating-attitudes in adult-ADHD, and to examine its relationship with sociodemographic, clinical, AgRP, and biochemical parameters. METHOD: The study included 70 adult-patients and 47 healthy-controls. The DIVA2.0, SCID-1 was administered to the participants. Eating-Attitudes Test (EAT), Night-Eating Questionnaire (NEQ), Barratt Impulsivity Scale (BIS-11) were filled by the participants. RESULTS: We found that psychological state affect eating-attitudes in adult-ADHD (p = .013), emotional eating is more common, nocturnal chronotype is dominant (p < .001), NES is more frequent (p < .001), waist circumference measurement is higher (p = .030), and lipid profile is deteriorated (p < .001). AgRP levels were significantly lower in patients treated with methylphenidate (p = .021). Those who received methylphenidate treatment had less NES than those who did not. Deterioration in eating-attitudes and symptom severity of night eating in ADHD, it was positively correlated with clinical severity of ADHD and impulsivity. In addition, age and increase in night eating symptoms were predictors of deterioration in eating attitudes in adult-ADHD. We found that impaired eating-attitudes and impulsivity severity were also predictors of NES (p = .006, p = .034). CONCLUSION: The necessity of adult-ADHD treatment has been demonstrated by the deterioration in eating-attitudes and cardiometabolic risk dimensions and the underlying mechanisms.

Global warming further increases the toxic threat of environmental pollutants on organisms. In order to reveal the dimensions of this threat more clearly, it is of great importance that the studies be carried out with temperature differences as close as possible to the temperature values that will represent the global climate projection. In our study, how the toxicity of glyphosate, which is widely used around the world, on zebrafish changes with temperature increases of 0.5° was investigated on behavioral and molecular basis. For this purpose, adult zebrafish were exposed to glyphosate at concentrations of 1 ppm and 5 ppm for 96 h in four environments with a temperature difference of 0.5° (28.5; 29.0; 29.5; 30.0 °C). At the end of the exposure, half of the zebrafish were sampled and remaining half were left for a 10-day recovery process. At the end of the trials, zebrafish were subjected to circadian rhythm and anxiety tests. In addition, histopathological, immunohistochemical and metabolome analyses were performed on brain tissues. As a result, it has been detected that anxiety and circadian rhythm were disrupted in parallel with the increased temperature and glyphosate concentration, and increased histopathological findings and 5-HT4R and GNAT2 immunopositivity in the brain. As a result of metabolome analysis, more than thirty annotated metabolites have been determined due to the synergistic effect of temperature increase and glyphosate exposure. As a conclusion, it was concluded that even a temperature increase of 0.5° caused an increasing effect of glyphosate toxicity in the zebrafish model.

The increase in temperature due to global warming greatly affects the toxicity produced by pesticides in the aquatic ecosystem. Studies investigating the effects of such environmental stress factors on next generations are important in terms of the sustainability of ecosystems. In this study, the effects of parental synergistic exposure to glyphosate and temperature increase on the next generation were investigated in a zebrafish model. For this purpose, adult zebrafish were exposed to 1 ppm and 5 ppm glyphosate for 96 h at four different temperatures (28.5, 29.0, 29.5, 30.0 °C). At the end of this period, some of the fish were subjected to the recovery process for 10 days. At the end of both treatments, a new generation was taken from the fish and morphological, physiological, molecular and behavioral analysis were performed on the offspring. According to the results, in parallel with the 0.5-degree temperature increase applied to the parents with glyphosate exposure, lower survival rate, delay in hatching, increased body malformations and lower blood flow and heart rate were detected in the offspring. In addition, according to the results of whole mouth larva staining, increased apoptosis, free oxygen radical formation and lipid accumulation were detected in the offspring. Moreover, it has been observed that the temperature increases to which the parents are exposed affects the light signal transmission and serotonin pathways in the offspring, resulting in more dark/light locomotor activity and increased thigmotaxis.

Anxiety is one of the most common psychiatric symptoms worldwide. Studies show that there is an increase of >25 % in the prevalence of anxiety with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic process. Due to the various side effects of drugs used in the treatment of anxiety, interest in natural therapeutic alternatives has increased. Agarwood is a plant used as a natural therapeutic due to its sedative effect as well as many effects such as antioxidant and antibacterial. Although there are many studies with agarwood, comprehensive behavioral studies, including the next generation, are limited. In present study, zebrafish fed with diets containing 10-100 ppm water extract of Agarwood (AWE) for 3 and 8 weeks were exposed to predator stress using Oscar fish in order to test the potential anxiolytic effect of AWE. At the end of the period, zebrafish exposed to predator stress were subjected to anxiety and circadian tests. Histopathological evaluation and immunofluorescent analyzes of BDNF and 5HT4-R proteins were performed in the brains of zebrafish. The effects on the next generation were examined by taking offspring from zebrafish. According to the results, it was observed that AWE had a healing effect on anxiety-like behaviors and on the disrupted circadian rhythm triggered by the predatory stress it applied, especially in the 8 weeks 100 ppm group. Interestingly, it was also found to be effective in offspring of zebrafish fed diets with AWE.

Objectives: The potential role of neuroinflammation in adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients has been investigated with peripheral hemogram-related inflammatory markers. Systemic immune inflammation index (SII) is defined as a new index that has been developed for the balance of inflammatory and immune status. Methods: Our study was based on a prospective routine complete blood count(CBC) analysis of 74 Adult ADHD patients and 70 healthy participants. The DSM-5-Clinician version and Barratt impulsivity scale-11 were used to evaluate the participants. Results: There was no statistical difference in the comparison of the SII ratios, platelet distribution width (PDW), and plateretritis (PCT) (p>0.05 for each) in a group of a young adults with ADHD and in a comparison control group. These inflammatory indicators were found to be similar between patients newly diagnosed with ADHD (n=40) and patients using methylphenidate (n=34) (p>0.05 for each). The relationship between ADHD clinical symptoms and severity and inflammation was evaluated. A significant negative correlation was observed between attention deficit scores and PCT (r=-0.301, p=0.009). A positive significant correlation was found between hyperactivity scores and SII (r=0.247, p=0.034). A significant positive correlation was found between Barrat motor scores and PDW(r=241, p=0.038). In the regression analysis, the PCT variable changed the attention deficit variable (ß=.33, t(70)= -2.703, p=.009, pr 2= .094) predicted negatively and significantly. Conclusions: We demonstrated the association of SII, which is independently associated with adverse outcomes in many diseases, and the severity of hyperactivity symptoms in adult ADHD. The fact that PCT predicts attention deficit negatively and decisively shows the importance of inflammatory assessments specific to clinical presentations. The critical importance of platelets in inflammatory processes in ADHD has been demonstrated once again with inflammatory markers such as SII, PLT, and PDW, which can be accessed by an easily applicable complete blood count method.

Global warming and plastic pollution are among the most important environmental problems today. Unfortunately, our world is warming more than expected and biological life, especially in the oceans, has come to the limit of the struggle for survival with the nano-scale plastic pollution that is constantly released from the main material. In this study, the synergic effect of one-degree temperature increase (28, 29, 30 °C) and 100 nm size polystyrene plastic nanoparticles on circadian rhythm, brain damage and metabolomics in zebrafish were investigated in an environment where temperature control with 0.05-degree precision is provided. A temperature increase of 1°, together with nanoplastic exposure, affected the circadian rhythm in zebrafish, caused damage to the brain and caused significant changes in the intensity of a total of 18 metabolites in different pathways. It was also detected Raman signals of polystyrene in the brain homogenate. As a consequence, it is suggested that one degree of temperature increase pave the way for degeneration in the brain by disrupting some metabolic pathways, thereby significantly increasing the negative effects of nano-plastic on behavior.
