RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Wearing a face mask and keeping a minimal distance from others are common nonpharmaceutical interventions that governments may mandate or recommend to contain the spread of infectious diseases. The article addresses the following questions: (i) Do people interact closer when the face mask is worn? (ii) Do people interact closer because they believe that the mask reduces the risk of contagion? (iii) If the mask induces people to interact closer, does the increase in risk entailed by shorter distances entirely offset the decrease in risk offered by the mask? METHODS: With a view to maximizing both the external and the internal validity of the study, between 2021 and 2022 we performed a large field experiment on real-life interactions (n > 4500) and a controlled laboratory experiment in virtual reality. RESULTS: Converging between the field and the lab, the results indicate that in general people interact closer when the mask is worn, and in particular when they believe that the mask reduces the risk of contagion. However, even assuming a very low filtration efficacy and an extremely large distance-reducing effect of the mask, the counteracting effect of shorter interpersonal distances is never strong enough to entirely offset the mask's protection. CONCLUSION: The distance-reducing effect of the mask is real but warrants no serious objection against a face mask policy.

RESUMO

Do caregivers in non-Western communities adapt their behaviors to the needs of infants? This question reflects one of the most long-standing debates on the universality versus culture-specificity of caregiver-infant interactions in general and sensitive responsiveness to infants in particular. In this article, an integration of both points of view is presented, based on the theoretical origins of the sensitive responsiveness construct combined with the ethnographic literature on caregivers and infants in different parts of the world. This integration advocates universality without uniformity, and calls for multidisciplinary collaborations to investigate the complexities and nuances of caregiver-infant interactions in different cultures. Salient issues are illustrated with observations of infants (ages 7-31 months) in Mali, the Republic of Congo, and the Philippines.

RESUMO

Ruptured renal artery aneurysms are uncommon. Although the increased use of endovascular technologies, controversy persists over the management. Contained rupture may be more difficult to diagnose, hence delay the management. We report a case of contained rupture of renal artery aneurysm treated with selective embolization prior to nephrectomy.

RESUMO

Gossypiboma is a dreaded complication following mainly abdomino-pelvic surgeries. The clinical presentation varies widely and is strongly associated with two factors: localization of the textiloma and type of the tissue reaction. Intravesical gossypiboma migration is rare and usually presents as recurrent urinary tract infections. We report a case of gossypiboma migration into the bladder that was treated by endoscopic extraction. The purpose of this report is to remind the importance of the prevention which must be the challenge rather than the treatment modalities.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Textiloma is a rare surgical complication. The location in the renal compartment is exceptional. The diagnosis can be difficult due to its rarity and the absence of clinical signs. The best treatment remains preventive by carefully counting the compresses and the operating fields at the beginning and end of the procedure. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a case report of a 71-year-old female patient with a high blood pressure under treatment. In this history, we noted a right nephrectomy by a lombotomy 6 years ago indicated for a mute kidney on a pyelo-ureteral junction syndrome and a drainage of a suppuration of this renal compartment a year after surgery. The patient was diagnosed with purulent discharge through the lombotomy site associated with lower back pain that had been present for 4 years. The patient then underwent an uro-CT scan which showed an oval formation of the right renal compartment suggestive of a textiloma. An exploratory right lombotomy was performed. And then the wetraction of the compresses followed by washing and closing had been done. The postoperative course was simple. DISCUSSION: The location in the renal compartment is exceptional. These may include compresses, surgical gauzes, sponges, cotton pads, etc. The inflammation caused by this foreign body will be responsible for an abscess in the event of infection. An evolution towards chronicity follows as long as the foreign body persists. Diagnosis and reoperation are often made during the same hospitalization period. Early imaging will help to make early diagnosis avoiding diagnostic wandering. The diagnosis was made late in our observation. However, the diagnosis can be difficult due to its rarity and the absence of clinical signs. CONCLUSION: Textiloma is a rare surgical complication. Renal localization, although rare, is "exceptional" of consequence. The best treatment remains preventive by carefully counting the compresses and the operating fields at the beginning and end of the procedure.

RESUMO

Spontaneous bladder rupture is a rare condition, and its diagnosis has evolved over time. The clinical presentation is variable and nonspecific, with prognosis depending on the patient's condition and early recognition. We report a case of spontaneous bladder rupture complicated by abdominal wall gangrene managed in our center. The purpose of this report is to update the knowledge available on this disease.

RESUMO

Adult renal neuroblastoma is a rare condition, and a few cases have been previously described in the literature. Its prognosis is variable and the treatment suffer the lack of specific guidelines due to the low incidence. We report a case of adult renal neuroblastoma managed with nephrectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy. The purpose of this report is to update the knowledge available on this disease.

RESUMO

The title SnIV complex, [Sn(C6H5)3Cl(C18H15O4P)], is a formal adduct between triphenyl phosphate (PhO)3P=O and the stannane derivative chlorido-tri-phenyl-tin, SnPh3Cl. The structure refinement reveals that this mol-ecule displays the largest Sn-O bond length for compounds including the X=O→SnPh3Cl fragment (X = P, S, C, or V), 2.6644 (17) Å. However, an AIM topology analysis based on the wavefunction calculated from the refined X-ray structure shows the presence of a bond critical point (3,-1), lying on the inter-basin surface separating the coordinated phosphate O atom and the Sn atom. This study thus shows that an actual polar covalent bond is formed between (PhO)3P=O and SnPh3Cl moieties.

RESUMO

The crystal structure of the title tin complex, [Sn(C6H5)3Cl(C2H6OS)], (I), has been reported with one mol-ecule in the asymmetric unit in an ortho-rhom-bic cell [Kumar et al. (2009 ▸). Acta Cryst. E65, m1602-m1603]. While using SnPh3Cl as a starting material for a reaction for which the products were recrystallized over a very long time (six months) from dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), a new polymorph was obtained for (I), with two independent mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit of a monoclinic cell. The coordination geometry of the Sn centres remains unchanged, with the Cl- ion and the DMSO mol-ecule in the apical positions and the phenyl C atoms in the equatorial positions of a trigonal bipyramid. The main difference between the polymorphs is the relative orientation of the phenyl rings in the equatorial plane, reflecting a degree of free rotation of these groups about their Sn-C bonds. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked into [010] chains mediated by weak C-H⋯O inter-actions.

RESUMO

Anal adenocarcinoma is very rare and usually occurs in the elderly. We present a case of a 12-year-old girl with an anal margin painful tumor infiltrating the lower rectum, with perineal and vulvar permeation nodules and bilateral fixed inguinal and iliac lymph nodes. Histology showed anal adenocarcinoma with mucosecreting component and independent cells. She had no extra pelvic metastasis on CT scan. She underwent a colostomy and palliative care. This exceptional case challenges us on the diversity of forms of anal cancers that require a multidisciplinary approach. The precarious social context and the age of onset make it difficult to manage this rare cancer.

RESUMO

In the previously reported [C2O4(SnPh3)2] complex [Diop et al. (2003 ▸). Appl. Organomet. Chem.17, 881-882.], the SnIV atoms are able to formally complete their coordination by addition of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) mol-ecules provided by the reaction medium, affording the title complex, [Sn2(C6H5)6(C2O4)(C2H6OS)2]. The SnIV atoms are then penta-coordinated, with a common trans trigonal-bipyramidal arrangement. The asymmetric unit contains one half-mol-ecule, which is completed by inversion symmetry in space group type C2/c. The inversion centre is placed at the mid-point of the central bis-monodentate oxalate dianion, C2O42-, which bridges the [(SnPh3)(DMSO)] moieties. The mol-ecule crystallizes as a disordered system, with two phenyl rings disordered by rotation about their Sn-C bonds, while the DMSO mol-ecule is split over two positions due to a tetra-hedral inversion at the S atom. All disordered parts were refined with occupancies fixed of 0.5.
