RESUMO

The association between fish consumption and decreased risk of CVD is well documented. However, studies on health effects of fish consumption suggest that other components than n-3 PUFA have beneficial cardiometabolic effects, including effects on glucose metabolism. The aim of the present study was to investigate effects of salmon fish protein on cardiometabolic risk markers in a double-blind, randomised controlled parallel trial. We hypothesised that daily intake of a salmon fish protein supplement for 8 weeks would improve glucose tolerance in persons with increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Our primary outcome measure was serum glucose (s-glucose) 2 h after a standardised oral glucose tolerance test. In total, eighty-eight adults with elevated s-glucose levels were randomised to 7·5 g of salmon fish protein/d or placebo, and seventy-four participants were included in the analysis. We found no significant effect of salmon fish protein supplementation on our primary outcome or other markers related to glucose tolerance, serum lipids, weight or blood pressure compared with placebo. The present study does not support the hypothesis that daily intake of a salmon fish protein supplement for 8 weeks improves glucose tolerance in persons with increased risk of T2DM.

RESUMO

The innate immune system is rapidly activated during myocardial infarction and blockade of extracellular complement system reduces infarct size. Intracellular complement, however, appears to be closely linked to metabolic pathways and its role in ischemia-reperfusion injury is unknown and may be different from complement activation in the circulation. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the role of intracellular complement in isolated, retrogradely buffer-perfused hearts and cardiac cells from adult male wild type mice (WT) and from adult male mice with knockout of complement component 3 (C3KO). Main findings: (i) Intracellular C3 protein was expressed in isolated cardiomyocytes and in whole hearts, (ii) after ischemia-reperfusion injury, C3KO hearts had larger infarct size (32 ± 9% in C3KO vs. 22 ± 7% in WT; p=0.008) and impaired post-ischemic relaxation compared to WT hearts, (iii) C3KO cardiomyocytes had lower basal oxidative respiration compared to WT cardiomyocytes, (iv) blocking mTOR decreased Akt phosphorylation in WT, but not in C3KO cardiomyocytes, (v) after ischemia, WT hearts had higher levels of ATP, but lower levels of both reduced and oxidized nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH and NAD+, respectively) compared to C3KO hearts. Conclusion: intracellular C3 protected the heart against ischemia-reperfusion injury, possibly due to its role in metabolic pathways important for energy production and cell survival.

RESUMO

At the fluid/porous-medium interface the pseudo-Rayleigh (pR) and pseudo-Stoneley (pSt) waves exist. The relation with the corresponding poles in the slowness plane is not unambiguous, depending on the choice of branch cuts. For a point-force excitation, the far-field Green's functions are computed using vertical branch cuts (method I) implying that the pR- and pSt-poles obey the radiation condition. Then, a separate pseudo interface wave is entirely captured by the corresponding pole residue because the loop integral along a branch cut contributes to a body wave only. When hyperbolic branch cuts are used (method II) the poles lie on the "principal" Riemann sheet. Then, also the loop integrals necessarily contribute to the pR-wave because the pR-pole is different from that in method I. They do not contribute to the pSt-wave when the pSt-pole lies on the principal Riemann sheet because the pole is identical to that in method I. When the pSt-pole has migrated to another Riemann sheet, however, the pSt-wave is fully captured by the loop integrals. In conclusion, the phase velocity and attenuation of a separate pseudo interface wave can be computed from the pole location in method I, but should be extracted from the full response in method II.

RESUMO

The interface-wave impedance and ellipticity are wave attributes that interrelate the full waveforms as observed in different components. For each of the fluid/elastic-solid interface waves, i.e., the pseudo-Rayleigh (pR) and Stoneley (St) waves, the impedance and ellipticity are found to have different functional dependencies on Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio. By combining the attributes in a cost function, unique and stable estimates of these parameters can be obtained, particularly when using the St wave. In a validation experiment, the impedance of the laser-excited pR wave is successfully extracted from simultaneous measurements of the normal particle displacement and the fluid pressure at a water/aluminum interface. The displacement is measured using a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) and the pressure with a needle hydrophone. Any LDV measurement is perturbed by refractive-index changes along the LDV beam once acoustic waves interfere with the beam. Using a model that accounts for these perturbations, an impedance decrease of 28% with respect to the plane wave impedance of the pR wave is predicted for the water/aluminum configuration. Although this deviation is different for the experimentally extracted impedance, there is excellent agreement between the observed and predicted pR waveforms in both the particle displacement and fluid pressure.

RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether removal of all amalgam fillings was associated with long-term changes in health complaints in a group of patients who attributed subjective health complaints to amalgam fillings. Patients previously examined at the Norwegian Dental Biomaterials Adverse Reaction Unit were included in the study and assigned to a treatment group (n = 20) and a reference group (n = 20). Participants in the treatment group had all amalgam fillings replaced with other restorative materials. Follow-ups took place 3 months, 1 and 3 years after removal of all amalgam fillings. There was no intervention in the reference group. Subjective health complaints were measured by numeric rating scales in both groups. Analysis of covariance was used to compare changes in health complaints over time in the two groups. In the treatment group, there were significant reductions in intra-oral and general health complaints from inclusion into study to the 3-year follow-up. In the reference group, changes in the same period were not significant. Comparisons between the groups showed that reductions in intra-oral and general health complaints in the treatment group were significantly different from the changes in the reference group. The mechanisms behind this remain to be identified. Reduced exposure to dental amalgam, patient-centred treatment and follow-ups, and elimination of worry are factors that may have influenced the results.

RESUMO

Pseudo interface waves can exist at the interface of a fluid and a fluid-saturated poroelastic solid. These waves are typically related to the pseudo-Rayleigh pole and the pseudo-Stoneley pole in the complex slowness plane. It is found that each of these two poles can contribute (as a residue) to a full transient wave motion when the corresponding Fourier integral is computed on the principal Riemann sheet. This contradicts the generally accepted explanation that a pseudo interface wave originates from a pole on a nonprincipal Riemann sheet. It is also shown that part of the physical properties of a pseudo interface wave can be captured by loop integrals along the branch cuts in the complex slowness plane. Moreover, it is observed that the pseudo-Stoneley pole is not always present on the principal Riemann sheet depending also on frequency rather than on the contrast in material parameters only. Finally, it is shown that two additional zeroes of the poroelastic Stoneley dispersion equation, which are comparable with the P-poles known in nonporous elastic solids, do have physical significance due to their residue contributions to a full point-force response.

RESUMO

Cognitive functioning was compared in 29 children diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), 35 children with fetal alcohol effects (FAE), and 66 psychotropic drugs-exposed (PDE) children using Wechsler tests and the neuropsychological test battery NEPSY. In the FAS group, verbal IQ (VIQ=78), performance IQ (PIQ=77), and full scale IQ (FSIQ=75) were significantly lower as compared to the FAE and PDE groups. In the PDE group VIQ and FSIQ were significantly higher than in the FAE group. In the FAS group, processing speed (PS) was significantly lower than the other three factors. In the FAE group, perceptual organization (PO) was significantly higher, whereas PS was significantly lower than the other factors. In the PDE group, verbal comprehension (VC) was significantly higher than the other factors. Attention subscales on the NEPSY were significantly lower in all the three groups. Prenatal alcohol exposure affects IQ levels more than exposure to psychotropic drugs. Attentional problems were found in all children when tested with the NEPSY in all groups.

RESUMO

Memory and psychophysiological variables in persons with self-reported reactions to dental amalgam (amalgam patients: N=26) and in persons without such symptoms (controls: N=21) were compared. The groups were matched regarding age, education, and amount of amalgam. Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised was obtained for all subjects and compared to amalgam points in a dose-response design. The results demonstrated that amalgam patients function on the same level as the controls regarding memory variables, attention, concentration, and delayed recall. Psychophysiological measures of skin conductance as correlates of attention and basal memory functions, were compared in the two groups. No differences between the two groups were observed and no correlation between memory variables and exposure to amalgam could be detected.

RESUMO

The effect of a threatening context upon tonic task-induced physiological changes was tested in an experiment where 14 male subjects performed a continuous perceptual motor task for 150 seconds, once with and once without threat of aversive electric shock (counterbalanced order). Results indicated that task-irrelevant muscular tension increased and skin temperature decreased over the course of a task, and these gradients were steeper with threat than for the no-threat treatment. Initial heart-rate increase was marked for the threat condition. For respiration, a trend parallel to muscular gradients emerged with no-threat as contrasted with a parallel respiratory-cardiac activation with threat. Subjects' ratings on items reflecting self-perception responded to the threat manipulation, but ratings on items reflecting task perception remained unaffected.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the use of blood products and artificial colloids during total hip arthroplasty in European hospitals. DESIGN: Descriptive. SETTING: Europe. METHODS: During the period October 1990-October 1991 transfusion data were obtained about patients who underwent a planned total hip replacement for the first time. The investigations were performed in 31 teaching hospitals in ten countries of the EC, as a part of the ¿Safe and good use of blood in surgery' (SANGUIS)-project. RESULTS: Red cells were ordered preoperatively in 97.4% of the 1647 cases and transfused in 81% (ranges among hospitals: 29-100). Hospitals in the Mediterranean area used more auto-transfusion than those in Central and Northern Europe. Plasma was transfused in 6% of the patients, predominantly in hospitals in southern European countries. Albumin was used especially in Central and Northern European countries. The reasons for red cell transfusion were stated in the medical records in 23% of the cases, for plasma transfusions in 7% and for albumin in 1%. Averaged transfusion-related costs were 192 ecu per patient (ranges per hospital: 60-383 ecu). CONCLUSION: Differences between European hospitals in the use of blood products for total hip arthroplasty are considerable.

RESUMO

Obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m(2)) increases the risk of developing lifestyle-related diseases. A subgroup of obese individuals has been described as "metabolically healthy, but obese" (MHO). In contrast to at-risk obese (ARO), the MHO phenotype is defined by a favourable lipid profile and a normal or only slightly affected insulin sensitivity, despite the same amount of body fat. The objective was to characterize the metabolic phenotype of MHO subjects. We screened a variety of genes involved in lipid metabolism and inflammation in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Obese subjects (men and women; 18-70 years) with BMI ≥30 kg/m(2) were characterized as MHO (n = 9) or as ARO (n = 10). In addition, eleven healthy, normal weight subjects characterized as healthy by the same criteria as described for the MHO subjects were included. We found that with similar weight, total fat mass and fat mass distribution, the ARO subjects have increased plasma levels of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase and free fatty acids. This group also has altered expression levels of a number of genes linked to lipid metabolism in PBMC with reduced gene expression levels of uncoupling protein 2, hormone-sensitive lipase and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor δ compared with MHO subjects. The present metabolic differences between subgroups of obese subjects may contribute to explain some of the underlying mechanisms causing the increased risk of disease among ARO subjects compared with MHO subjects.

RESUMO

The aim of this population-based study is to investigate IQ and IQ-related factors in children with hydrocephalus (HC). Psychometric intelligence was assessed in subjects below the age of 7.3 years (N=52, F=18, M=34) with the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence - Revised (WPPSI-R) and for children above the age of 7.3 years (N=29, F=6, M=23) with the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - Revised (WISC-R). The controls were matched according to age, gender, and geographic variables. All children were living in western Norway. 57 children had infantile HC (IH) and 24 had childhood HC (CH). Children with myelomeningocele (MMC), traumatic brain injury (TBI), or intracranial tumours were excluded. IQ levels were found to be significantly higher in the control group than in the HC groups. The Kaufman factors showed a similar pattern, with lowest values in IH, and CH intermediate between IH and NC. The results demonstrate that HC affects IQ. More specific cognitive profiles, such as non-verbal learning disabilities, are not detectable when using the Wechsler tests. For this purpose, other tests and models for analyses may be recommended.

RESUMO

The aim of this population-based, controlled study was to investigate non-verbal learning disabilities (NLD) in children with infantile hydrocephalus (IH). For this purpose, the results from subtests measuring either assets or deficits within Rourke's model of NLD were analyzed. Children with myelomeningocele (MMC), intracranial tumors, or IQ < 70 were excluded. Of the 52 IH children included in the study, 46 were shunt-treated, whereas 6 were not shunted. The 44 controls were matched according to age, gender, and geographic variables. The Neuropsychological Assessment of Children (NEPSY) was administered to 52 children (age 4-7) with IH; (F = 17, M = 35), and to 44 controls (F = 17, M = 27). The tests used were classified along each of the dimensions "assets" or "deficits", according to Rourke's model of the elements and the dynamics of the NLD syndrome. Differences between sum scores for the subtests classified as "assets", versus "deficits" were significantly higher in the IH group as compared with the controls (p < 0.005). These findings are compatible with a higher frequency of NLD in the IH group, in which neurological confounding factors have been excluded. In addition, the model of the elements and the dynamics of the NLD syndrome may be useful when analyzing neuropsychological test results obtained with traditional and comprehensive test batteries.

RESUMO

Malignant pleural mesotheliomas are rare malignancies associated with asbestos exposure and these tumors are infamous for their poor prognosis. Mesotheliomas in other body areas are much rarer. They may occur in the abdominal cavity and also in the inguinal region. In the latter area they are commonly confused with much commoner benign conditions. We present three cases of mesotheliomas in the tunica vaginalis testis.

RESUMO

The aim of the present experiment was to investigate effects of concurrent verbal and nonverbal cognitive tasks on right- and left-hand finger-tapping in right-, and left-handed boys and girls, within a dual-task paradigm. There were three interference tasks used: one motor verbal (reading aloud), and two sensory-memory tasks (cards with nonsense syllables and random shapes). Interference has been observed in adults in previous studies, and the first question was whether interference would be observed in the same manner in children. Furthermore, when comparing right- and left-handed boys and girls within the same study, possible effects of sex and hand preference could be evaluated. The final question addressed was whether there would be differences between the verbal and nonverbal tasks. The results revealed decreased tapping frequency bilaterally for all groups during execution of the motor verbal task. Furthermore, significant differences were found between boys and girls when tapping to the two sensory tasks, and particularly when tapping with the right hand. In left-handers, interference was most pronounced for the left-handed girls. As a conclusion, dual-task interference seems to be more pronounced in children as compared to adults. This might be due to interference caused by increased requests for general process capacity.

RESUMO

The purpose of the present experiment was to investigate effects of concurrent verbal and nonverbal tasks on right- and left-hand finger-tapping in an adult female group. In addition to the verbal versus nonverbal distinction, both motor and sensory tasks were used. Previous experiments have demonstrated lateralized right-hand decrement in finger-tapping in males during a motor verbal task; increases in both hands during a motor nonverbal task; and increase in left-hand tapping frequencies during sensory verbal and sensory nonverbal tasks. In the present study, significant increases in finger-tapping was observed in all the experimental conditions compared to pre- and postbaseline measures. It is concluded that both facilitation and interference may be observed in a finger-tapping paradigm. Thus, a cautious interpretation concerning the relation of finger-tapping and hemispheric asymmetry is encouraged.

RESUMO

In the present study we investigated the effects of concurrent verbal (reading) and nonverbal (humming) cognitive tasks on right- and left-hand finger-tapping in relation to hemispheric asymmetry in right- and left-handed females and males. The aim of the study was to investigate effects of attending either to the cognitive or manual task, and effects of differences in arousal attributed to the various tasks. The results revealed decreased finger-tapping frequency in males, and especially in right-handers, during execution of both the reading and humming task. For the reading task, the interference was lateralized, with a greater decrease in tapping frequency in the right hand. No interference was observed in the female groups. Biased attention to the cognitive or manual task did not have any effect on finger-tapping. However, increased arousal was observed during execution of the humming task, thus indicating this to be a mediating factor in finger-tapping interference.

RESUMO

The purpose of the present experiment was to investigate lateralized effects of concurrent verbal and nonverbal tasks on right- and left-hand finger-tapping. In addition to the verbal vs. nonverbal dichotomy, both motor and sensory tasks were used. It was predicted that a verbal motor task (reading aloud) would lead to more inhibitory interference for right-hand tappings than would a sensory verbal task (watching and remembering slides with nonsense syllables). Similarly, it was predicted that a motor nonverbal task (humming a tune) would lead to more left-hand inhibitory interference than would a sensory nonverbal task (watching pairs of spatial patterns). Results showed a predicted lateralized right-hand decrement in finger-tapping during the motor verbal task. However, an increase in left-hand tapping frequency above baseline was observed during both sensory tasks, while no significant difference was observed between the hands for the motor nonverbal task.

RESUMO

Proteoglycans are widely expressed in animal cells. Interactions between negatively charged glycosaminoglycan chains and molecules such as growth factors are essential for differentiation of cells during development and maintenance of tissue organisation. We propose that glycosaminoglycan chains play a role in targeting of proteoglycans to their proper cellular or extracellular location. The variability seen in glycosaminoglycan chain structure from cell type to cell type, which is acquired by use of particular Ser-Gly sites in the protein core, might therefore be important for post-synthesis sorting. This links regulation of glycosaminoglycan synthesis to the post-Golgi fate of proteoglycans.
