Neonatal therapists are a key team member, especially, when in concert with the medical teams, especially nurses. This column speaks of the challenges the author faced as a parent in the NICU then delves into an interview with Heather Batman, a feeding occupational and neonatal therapist who provides personal and professional insight into how those NICU days and the team members ultimately benefit that infant's long-term outcome.

This column interviews Ashley Randolph, a Black NICU Parent Leader, and delves into her three pregnancies and the resulting preterm deliveries. Throughout it all, she worked hard to advocate for herself and her infants despite barriers to access to appropriate health care. Her interview should be distributed to NICU teams across the United States.

A newborn's admission to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) can be both stress inducing and frightening for a parent or caregiver. With nursing being a constant calming presence, a trusting bond between the parents and nurses often becomes the lifeline to survive the NICU journey. This bond impacts not only the baby and family, but also promotes the institution's reputation within the community. In today's climate of healthcare professional shortages, the power of the nurses' connections to families cannot be overlooked. It is critical in all neonatal units, especially where parents are being approached to enroll their infant in clinical research.

So much has happened and continues to happen to her child(ren) that she is in a tailspin of physical and emotional pain. There are many ways to help the new mother through this trying time, and the NICU nurse is often the one who can be the most effective in getting mom on a solid path forward. Here are some suggestions for NICU nurses working with these shell-shocked mothers.
