RESUMO

AIMS: To determine whether the presence of anticardiolipin antibodies in patients with suspected myocardial infarction is predictive of complications during hospital stay or after discharge. METHODS: Anticardiolipin antibodies were serially measured in a cohort of 111 patients, from the time of admission to the coronary care until till eight weeks after discharge. Associations with fatal and non-fatal cardiac complications were documented. RESULTS: The incidence of raised titres of IgG and IgM anticardiolipin antibodies (ACA) in patients with myocardial infarction was comparable with that in patients with ischaemic heart disease. ACA titres in patients with a previous myocardial infarct were not significantly different from those found in patients without a previous history of infarction. Over the period of the study, ACA titres in the myocardial infarct group did not change significantly from those recorded on admission, nor did those patients with raised ACA titres have a higher prevalence of complications in hospital or in the early period after discharge. CONCLUSIONS: There is no evidence that patients with an acute or previous myocardial infarct have higher ACA titres than those found in patients with ischaemic heart disease. Raised ACA titres soon after myocardial infarction do not influence immediate patient outcome.

RESUMO

A severe gastroenteritis affected Ontario pigs in the Spring of 1964 and again in 1966. The mortality of pigs less than a week of age was 100%, in older pigs there were few deaths although morbidity in these pigs approximated 100%. Viruses were isolated from the brains, intestines, and intestinal lymph nodes of baby pigs. One of these isolates, given by mouth to two colostrum deprived piglets, induced a severe enteritis 36 hours after administration and both of the piglets died 24 hours later. The characteristics of the disease and the virus bear a striking resemblance to transmissible gastroenteritis as seen in the United States of America and the United Kingdom.

RESUMO

Antibodies to a variety of foods, and in particular cereals, were measured in serum from 100 patients with acute psychoses and 100 elective surgical patients. For 13 out of 14 foods to which non-IgE antibodies were detected the schizophrenics had slightly more antibodies than the controls. There was an association between a possible secondary mania and the presence of IgE antibodies to wheat or rye. However, neither the schizophrenia nor the mania findings can be regarded as evidence for food allergy causing psychiatric disorder, since the immunological findings in both cases may represent consequences of the illnesses or their treatment, rather than causes of the illness.
