Radiotherapy is one of the most important options for treating breast cancer in humans. The development of biomarkers to monitor radiosensitivity is scarce. The aim of this study is to investigate the γH2AX levels in the human blood samples 0.5 h after radiotherapy compared to the levels before radiotherapy in breast cancer patients in relation to their respective body mass index (BMI). Blood plasma samples were collected from a total of 20 breast cancer patients before and after radiotherapy to measure γH2AX levels with an antibody against γH2AX based on enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique. The median BMI of the patients was 30 kg/m2. γH2AX was differentially expressed in breast cancer patients before radiotherapy. γH2AX levels significantly increased in 14 patients after radiotherapy (P = 0.006), whereas γH2AX levels decreased in three patients after radiotherapy, and three patients were excluded. There was no correlation between γH2AX values after radiotherapy and BMI (P = 0.5, r = 0.1). Our results suggest that γH2AX can be used by ELISA technique to measure γH2AX in the blood plasma of breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy and can be considered a biomarker of radiosensitivity.

This paper presents guidelines for the calibration of radiation beams that were issued by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA TRS 398), the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM TG 51) and the German task group (DIN 6800-2). These protocols are based on the use of an ionization chamber calibrated in terms of absorbed dose to water in a standard laboratory's reference quality beam, where the previous protocols were based on air kerma standards. This study aims to determine uncertainties in dosimetry for electron beam radiotherapy using internationally established high-energy radiotherapy beam calibration standards. Methods: Dw was determined in 6-, 12- and 18 MeV electron energies under reference conditions using three cylindrical and two plane-parallel ion chambers in concert with the IAEA TRS 398, AAPM TG 51 and DIN 6800-2 absorbed dose protocols. From mean measured Dw values, the ratio TRS 398/TG 51 was found to vary between 0.988 and 1.004, while for the counterpart TRS 398/DIN 6800-2 and TG 51/DIN 6800-2, the variation ranges were 0.991-1.003 and 0.997-1.005, respectively. For the cylindrical chambers, the relative combined uncertainty (k = 1) in absorbed dose measurements was 1.44%, while for the plane-parallel chambers, it ranged from 1.53 to 1.88%. Conclusions: A high degree of consistency was demonstrated among the three protocols. It is suggested that in the use of the presently determined dose conversion factors across the three protocols, dose intercomparisons can be facilitated between radiotherapy centres.

When faced with illness, Sudanese patients have traditionally relied primarily on folklore healers. In the recent past, Sudan increased its health care spending and placed ever-greater importance on medical education. Although traditional remedies still play an important role, Sudanese patients increasingly consult conventional medicine. Not only infectious diseases but also a rising burden of noncommunicable conditions, including cancer, represent major health care challenges. Therefore, Sudan will need to make the best out of the limited resources available and further increase investment in health care to confront these trends successfully. Sudan was one of the first African countries to recognize the importance of radiation oncology in multidisciplinary cancer care and began investing in it in the 1960s. Today, there are 4 comprehensive cancer centers in the country, which offer radiation therapy and employ 10 radiation therapy machines for a population of about 45 million people. This proportion is an indication that Sudan still has an underfunded health care system with a lack of infrastructure and human resources. The present manuscript intends to provide a well-rounded overview of radiation oncology in Sudan today.
