BACKGROUND: Subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) for Parkinson's disease (PD) improves quality of life (QoL), motor and non-motor symptoms (NMS). However, in previous studies, 43%-49% of patients did not experience clinically relevant postoperative QoL improvement. To inform individualised prediction of postoperative QoL improvement, we developed a stratification analysis of QoL outcomes based on preoperative non-motor total burden, severity of motor progression and motor response in levodopa challenge tests. METHODS: This was a prospective, open-label, multicentre, international study with a 6-month follow-up. A distribution-based threshold identified 'QoL responders' in the PDQuestionnaire-8 Summary Index (PDQ-8 SI). After baseline stratification based on the NMS Scale, Hoehn and Yahr Scale and levodopa response assessed with the Unified PD Rating Scale-III, we compared postoperative QoL response between these strata. To assess the clinical usefulness and statistical feasibility of stratifications, we compared cumulative distribution function curves, respectively PDQ-8 within-stratum variation. RESULTS: All main outcomes improved postoperatively. Based on the 8.1 points threshold for clinically meaningful PDQ-8 SI improvement, only 80/161 patients were classified as 'QoL responders'. The absolute risk reductions for QoL non-response among respective non-motor, motor progression and levodopa response strata were 23%, 8% and 3%, respectively. Only non-motor stratification reduced PDQ-8 within-stratum variation compared with the overall cohort. CONCLUSIONS: Non-motor stratification, but not motor progression or levodopa response stratification, is clinically useful and statistically feasible for personalised preoperative prediction of postoperative QoL outcome of STN-DBS for PD. Our findings highlight that non-motor assessments are necessary components of a case-based, holistic approach of DBS indication evaluations geared towards optimising postoperative QoL outcomes. Modulating near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) with a high dynamic range is challenging in nanoscale thermal science and engineering. Modulation depths [(maximum value - minimum value)/(maximum value + minimum value) × 100%] of ≈2% to ≈15.7% have been reported with matched modes, but breaking the constraint of mode matching theoretically allows for higher modulation depth. We demonstrate a modulation depth of ≈32.2% by a pair of graphene-covered SU8 heterostructures at a gap distance of ≈80 nm. Dissimilar Fermi levels tuned by bias voltages enable mismatched surface plasmon polaritons which improves the modulation. The modulation depth when switching from a matched mode to a mismatched mode is ≈4.4-fold compared to that when switching between matched modes. This work shows the importance of symmetry in polariton-mediated NFRHT and represents the largest modulation depth to date in a two-body system with fixed gap distance and temperature.

Metal-free polymer daytime radiative cooling coatings with hierarchical eye-like air pores are proposed and fabricated with a super-large-scale film-stretching method. The hierarchically porous film (HPF) can be further coated with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) micro-hemispheres, forming coated HPF (cHPF), which do not dramatically change the optical or thermal properties. The cHPF is slightly better with a lower solar absorptivity (2.4%) and a higher thermal emissivity over the atmospheric transparency window (90.1%). The low solar absorptivity is due to the strong scattering of the hierarchical eye-like air pores, while the molecular vibrations and the focusing effect of the PMMA micro-hemispheres contribute to the high emissivity. An average mid-day temperature reduction of 7.92 °C is achieved relative to the air temperature, and the average cooling power reaches 116.0 W m-2 , which are much better than the cooling performances of the commercial cooling cushion. During the day, the cHPF-covered simulated building is up to 6.47 and 4.84 °C cooler than the ambient and the white painted counterpart, respectively. The film is durable and resistant to chemical etching, and very promising to use globally, especially in warm and tropical regions.

Here, we report an all-fiber tunable ultrafast Raman laser synchronously pumped by a home-made 1.6 µm dissipative soliton (DS) picosecond (ps) laser, which produces Stokes light beyond 1.7 µm. The Raman gain medium is a segment of highly germanium-doped (Ge-doped) fiber offering a high Raman gain coefficient at the target wavelength. Once the Raman conversion cavity is synchronized with the pump light, a stable 1.7 µm Raman laser (the first Stokes light) can be obtained at a low pump threshold. The maximum output power of the 1.7 µm Raman laser can reach ∼ 22.62 mW. The wavelength tuning operation is independent of tunable pump source and intra-cavity filter. By adjusting the intra-cavity delay line simply, the different spectral component within the broad Raman gain bandwidth can be selectively synchronized with the pump light so that the Raman laser wavelength can be tuned continuously from 1702.6 nm ∼ 1728.84 nm. This tunable 1.7 µm waveband ultrafast laser will have potential applications in multiphoton microscopy for e.g. deep bio-imaging.

Incoherent broadband cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy (IBBCEAS) can achieve sensitive measurements at trace concentrations for liquid phase marine samples. The IBBCEAS system consists of a cavity-enhancement module (CEM) and a transmission hyperspectral module (THM). The CEM has cavity-enhancement factors up to 78 at 550 nm. Measurements were obtained over a wide wavelength range (420-640 nm) with a halogen lamp, and the optical cavity was formed by two concave highly reflective mirrors (R=0.99). The minimum detectable absorption coefficient αmin of 7.3×10-7cm-1 at 550 nm corresponds to a limit of detection for nutrients of 780 pM. The spectral resolution of the THM is 3 nm in the wavelength range of 400 to 750 nm. We performed the IBBCEAS measurements for biological and chemical substances, including nutrients, microalgae, and Cy5 dye. The concentrations of nutrients in a deionized water environment and artificial seawater environment were measured at nanomolar levels; the concentration of microalgae phaeocystis was detected with 3.46×104/mL, and fluorescence substances such as Cy5 dye could be measured at 0.03 mg/L. Experimental results show that the IBBCEAS system has the capability for sensitive measurements of biological and chemical substances and has strong potential forin situ ecological marine environmental monitoring function.

An inelastic hyperspectral Scheimpflug lidar system was developed for microalgae classification and quantification. The correction for the refraction at the air-glass-water interface was established, making our system suitable for aquatic environments. The fluorescence spectrum of microalgae was extracted by principal component analysis, and seven species of microalgae from different phyla have been classified. It was verified that when the cell density of Phaeocystis globosa was in the range of ${{1}}{{{0}}^4}\sim{{1}}{{{0}}^6}\;{\rm{cell}}\;{\rm{m}}{{\rm{L}}^{- 1}}$, the cell density had a linear relationship with the fluorescence intensity. The experimental results show our system can identify and quantify microalgae, with application prospects for microalgae monitoring in the field environment and early warning of red tides or algal blooms.

When the consequences of sociality differ depending on the state of individual animals and the experienced environment, individuals may benefit from altering their social behaviours in a context-dependent manner. Thus, to fully address the hypotheses about the role of social associations it is imperative to consider the multidimensional nature of sociality by explicitly examining social associations across multiple scales and contexts. We simultaneously recorded > 8000 associations from 85% of breeding individuals from a colony of Australasian gannets (Morus serrator) over a 2-week period, and examined gregariousness across four foraging states using multilayer social network analysis. We found that social associations varied in a context-dependent manner, highlighting that social associations are most prevalent during foraging (local enhancement) and in regions expected to provide clustered resources. We also provide evidence of individual consistency in gregariousness, but flexibility in social associates, demonstrating that individuals can adjust their social behaviours to match experienced conditions.

Natural disasters can cause rapid demographic changes that disturb the social structure of a population as individuals may lose connections. These changes also have indirect effects as survivors alter their within-group connections or move between groups. As group membership and network position may influence individual fitness, indirect effects may affect how individuals and populations recover from catastrophic events. Here we study changes in the social structure after a large predation event in a population of wild house mice (Mus musculus domesticus), when a third of adults were lost. Using social network analysis, we examine how heterogeneity in sociality results in varied responses to losing connections. We then investigate how these differences influence the overall network structure. An individual's reaction to losing associates depended on its sociality prior to the event. Those that were less social before formed more weak connections afterwards, while more social individuals reduced the number of survivors they associated with. Otherwise, the number and size of social groups were highly robust. This indicates that social preferences can drive how individuals adjust their social behaviour after catastrophic turnover events, despite the population's resilience in social structure.

OBJECTIVE: To examine 36-month effects of bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on non-motor symptoms (NMS) compared with standard-of-care medical treatment (MED) in Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: Here we report the 36-month follow-up of a prospective, observational, controlled, international multicentre study of the NILS cohort. Assessments included NMSScale (NMSS), PDQuestionnaire-8 (PDQ-8), Scales for Outcomes in PD (SCOPA)-motor examination, -activities of daily living, and -complications, and levodopa equivalent daily dose (LEDD). Propensity score matching resulted in a pseudo-randomised sub-cohort balancing baseline demographic and clinical characteristics between the STN-DBS and MED groups. Within-group longitudinal outcome changes were analysed using Wilcoxon signed-rank and between-group differences of change scores with Mann-Whitney U test. Strength of clinical responses was quantified with Cohen's effect size. In addition, bivariate correlations of change scores were explored. RESULTS: Propensity score matching applied on the cohort of 151 patients (STN-DBS n=67, MED n=84) resulted in a well-balanced sub-cohort including 38 patients per group. After 36 months, STN-DBS significantly improved NMSS, PDQ-8, SCOPA-motor examination and -complications and reduced LEDD. Significant between-group differences, all favouring STN-DBS, were found for NMSS, SCOPA-motor complications, LEDD (large effects), motor examination and PDQ-8 (moderate effects). Furthermore, significant differences were found for the sleep/fatigue, urinary (large effects) and miscellaneous NMSS domains (moderate effects). NMSS total and PDQ-8 change scores correlated significantly. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides Class IIb evidence for beneficial effects of STN-DBS on NMS at 36-month follow-up which also correlated with quality of life improvements. This highlights the importance of NMS for DBS outcomes assessments.

Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus is an effective and established therapy for patients with advanced Parkinson's disease improving quality of life, motor symptoms and non-motor symptoms. However, there is a considerable degree of interindividual variability for these outcomes, likely due to variability in electrode placement and stimulation settings. Here, we present probabilistic mapping data from a prospective, open-label, multicentre, international study to investigate the influence of the location of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation on non-motor symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease. A total of 91 Parkinson's disease patients undergoing bilateral deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus were included, and we investigated NMSScale, NMSQuestionnaire, Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson's disease-motor examination, -activities of daily living, and -motor complications, and Parkinson's disease Questionnaire-8 preoperatively and at 6-month follow-up after surgery. Leads were localized in standard space using the Lead-DBS toolbox and individual volumes of tissue activated were calculated based on clinical stimulation settings. Probabilistic stimulation maps and non-parametric permutation statistics were applied to identify voxels with significant above or below average improvement for each scale and analysed using the DISTAL atlas. All outcomes improved significantly at follow-up. Significant spatial distribution patterns of neurostimulation were observed for NMSScale total score and its mood/apathy and attention/memory domains. For both domains, voxels associated with below average improvement were mainly located dorsal to the subthalamic nucleus. In contrast, above average improvement for mood/apathy was observed in the ventral border region of the subthalamic nucleus and in its sensorimotor subregion and for attention/memory in the associative subregion. A trend was observed for NMSScale sleep domain showing voxels with above average improvement located ventral to the subthalamic nucleus. Our study provides evidence that the interindividual variability of mood/apathy, attention/memory, and sleep outcomes after subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation depends on the location of neurostimulation. This study highlights the importance of holistic assessments of motor and non-motor aspects of Parkinson's disease to tailor surgical targeting and stimulation parameter settings to patients' personal profiles.

Coupling modes between surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and surface phonon polaritons (SPhPs) play a vital role in enhancing near-field thermal radiation but are relatively unexplored, and no experimental result is available. Here, we consider the NFTR enhancement between two identical graphene-covered SiO2 heterostructures with millimeter-scale surface area and report an experimentally record-breaking ∼64-fold enhancement compared to blackbody (BB) limit at a gap distance of 170 nm. The energy transmission coefficient and radiation spectra show that the physical mechanism behind the colossal enhancement is the coupling between the surface plasmon and phonon polaritons.

When an emitter is close to a plasmonic nanoantenna, besides coupling to the dipolar antenna mode, the emitter also considerably couples to a superposition of the high-order modes, referred to as a pseudomode. We comprehensively investigate the differences between the dipolar mode channel and the pseudomode channel in a representative system where a dipole emitter couples to a silver nanorod. The two channels are shown to be distinct in their mechanisms, characteristics (including chromatic dispersion and field distribution), and dependences on system parameters (including emitter-antenna distance, antenna geometry, and material loss). The study provides physical insight and reveals important design rules for controlling the competition between the two channels.

We demonstrate an improved approach to integrate various color filters on a chip-scale by using stepwise metal-insulator-metal FP cavities. The cavity is composed of a thick silver mirror, an SU8 gap layer of controlled thickness, and a thin nickel layer. Reflective colors from red to blue can be generated from these filters through a simple UV lithography process. The filters were also fabricated on a flexible substrate which could be incorporated into wearable devices. This method can realize large-scale filter arrays with simple processing and may facilitate the use of structural color filters in displays and sensing.

We present a controlled cascade of self-assemblings of colloidal droplets at a nematic liquid crystal-air interface into large-scale ordered structures. Changing the tilt of the droplet-induced elastic dipoles via its dependence on the nematic film thickness, we are able to control the dipole-dipole interaction and thus the self-assembling regime. For a progressively large tilt, droplets form anisotropic lattices, which then transform into arrays of repulsive chains, then to bands of half-period-shifted densely bound chains. These structures with chain order at the inner scale aggregate into different large-scale clusters that have a pronounced circular pattern and are stabilized by the many-body elastocapillary attraction.

OBJECTIVE: Real-life observational report of clinical efficacy of bilateral subthalamic stimulation (STN-DBS), apomorphine (APO), and intrajejunal levodopa infusion (IJLI) on quality of life, motor, and nonmotor symptoms (NMS) in Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: In this prospective, multicenter, international, real-life cohort observation study of 173 PD patients undergoing STN-DBS (n = 101), IJLI (n = 33), or APO (n = 39) were followed-up using PDQuestionnaire-8, NMSScale (NMSS), Unified PD Rating Scale (UPDRS)-III, UPDRS-IV, and levodopa equivalent daily dose (LEDD) before and 6 months after intervention. Outcome changes were analyzed with Wilcoxon signed-rank or paired t test when parametric tests were applicable. Multiple comparisons were corrected (multiple treatments/scales). Effect strengths were quantified with relative changes, effect size, and number needed to treat. Analyses were computed before and after propensity score matching, balancing demographic and clinical characteristics. RESULTS: In all groups, PDQuestionnaire-8, UPDRS-IV, and NMSS total scores improved significantly at follow-up. Levodopa equivalent daily dose was significantly reduced after STN-DBS. Explorative NMSS domain analyses resulted in distinct profiles: STN-DBS improved urinary/sexual functions, mood/cognition, sleep/fatigue, and the miscellaneous domain. IJLI improved the 3 latter domains and gastrointestinal symptoms. APO improved mood/cognition, perceptual problems/hallucinations, attention/memory, and the miscellaneous domain. Overall, STN-DBS and IJLI seemed favorable for NMSS total score, and APO favorable for neuropsychological/neuropsychiatric NMS and PDQuestionnaire-8 outcome. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first comparison of quality of life, nonmotor. and motor outcomes in PD patients undergoing STN-DBS, IJLI, and APO in a real-life cohort. Distinct effect profiles were identified for each treatment option. Our results highlight the importance of holistic nonmotor and motor symptoms assessments to personalize treatment choices. © 2019 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a 450-nm laser underwater wireless optical transmission system by using adaptive bit-power loading discrete multi-tone (DMT) and Volterra series based post nonlinear equalization. Post nonlinear equalization mitigates the nonlinear impairment of the UWOC system. By incorporating post nonlinear equalization with a 3rd-order diagonal plane kernel, the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be improved by ~2 dB compared with a linear equalization method. The measured transmission capacity of the UWOC system is 16.6 Gbps over 5 m, 13.2 Gbps over 35 m, and 6.6 Gbps over 55 m tap water channel, with bit error rates (BERs) below the standard hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) limit of 3.8 × 10-3. The used electrical signal bandwidth is 2.75 GHz, corresponding to electrical spectrum efficiency of ∼6 bit/s/Hz. The distance-datarate product reaches 462 Gbps*m at 35 m tap water transmission. To the best of our knowledge, both the data rate and distance-data rate product are the largest reported for single laser diode.

We propose a scheme for transporting nanoparticles immersed in a fluid, relying on quantum vacuum fluctuations. The mechanism lies in the inhomogeneity-induced lateral Casimir force between a nanoparticle and a gradient metasurface and the relaxation of the conventional Dzyaloshinskiǐ-Lifshitz-Pitaevskiǐ constraint, which allows quantum levitation for a broader class of material configurations. The velocity for a nanosphere levitated above a grating is calculated and can be up to a few microns per minute. The Born approximation gives general expressions for the Casimir energy which reveal size-selective transport. For any given metasurface, a certain particle-metasurface separation exists where the transport velocity peaks, forming a "Casimir passage." The sign and strength of the Casimir interactions can be tuned by the shapes of liquid-air menisci, potentially allowing real-time control of an otherwise passive force, and enabling interesting on-off or directional switching of the transport process.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate how quality of life outcome after bilateral subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) in Parkinson's disease (PD) depends on age. METHODS: In this prospective, open-label, multicenter study including 120 PD patients undergoing bilateral STN-DBS, we investigated the PDQuestionnaire-8 (PDQ-8), Unified PD Rating Scale-III, Scales for Outcomes in PD-motor examination, complications, activities of daily living, and levodopa equivalent daily dose preoperatively and at 5 months follow-up. Significant changes at follow-up were analyzed with Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons. To explore the influence of age post hoc, the patients were classified into 3 age groups (≤59, 60-69, ≥70 years). Intragroup changes were analyzed with Wilcoxon signed-rank and intergroup differences with Kruskal-Wallis tests. The strength of clinical responses was evaluated using effect size. RESULTS: The PDQuestionnaire-8, Scales for Outcomes in PD-motor complications, activities of daily living, and levodopa equivalent daily dose significantly improved in the overall cohort and all age groups with no significant intergroup differences. However, PDQuestionnaire-8 effect sizes for age groups ≤59, 60 to 69, and ≥70 years, respectively, were strong, moderate, and small. Furthermore, PDQuestionnaire-8 domain analyses revealed that all domains except cognition and emotional well-being significantly improved in patients aged ≤59 years, whereas only communication, activities of daily living, and stigma improved in patients aged 60-69 years, and activities of daily living and stigma in patients aged ≥70 years. CONCLUSIONS: Although quality of life, motor complications, and activities of daily living significantly improved in all age groups after bilateral STN-DBS, the beneficial effect on overall quality of life was more pronounced and affected a wider range of quality of life domains in younger patients. © 2017 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to investigate 24-month of effects of bilateral subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) on nonmotor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: In this prospective, observational, multicenter, international study including 67 PD patients undergoing bilateral STN-DBS, we examined the Non-motor Symptom Scale, Non-Motor Symptoms Questionnaire, Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire-8, Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson's Disease-motor examination, -activities of daily living, and -complications, and levodopa-equivalent daily dose preoperatively and at 5 and 24-month of follow-up. After checking distribution normality, longitudinal outcome changes were investigated with Friedman tests or repeated-measures analysis of variance and Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons using multiple tests. Post hoc, Wilcoxon signed rank t tests were computed to compare visits. The strength of clinical responses was analyzed using effect size. Explorative Spearman correlations of change scores from baseline to 24-month follow-up were calculated for all outcomes. RESULTS: The Non-motor Symptom Scale and all other outcome parameters significantly improved from baseline to the 5-month follow-up. From 5 to 24-month, partial decrements in these gains were found. Nonetheless, comparing baseline with 24-month follow-up, significant improvements were observed for the Non-motor Symptom Scale (small effect), Scales for Outcomes in PD-motor examination showed a moderate effect, and Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson's Disease-complications and levodopa-equivalent daily dose showed large effects. Non-motor Symptom Scale change scores from baseline to 24-month follow-up correlated significantly with Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire-8, Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson's Disease-activities of daily living, and -motor complications change scores. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence of beneficial effects of bilateral STN-DBS on nonmotor symptoms at 24-month follow-up. The extent of nonmotor symptom improvement was directly proportionate to improvements in quality of life, activities of daily living, and motor complications. This study underlines the importance of nonmotor symptoms for holistic assessments of DBS outcomes. © 2018 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

OBJECTIVE: The optimal timing of subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) in Parkinson's disease (PD) is a topic of ongoing debate. In patients with short disease duration an improvement of quality of life (QoL) has been demonstrated for patients aged younger than 61 years. However, this has not been systematically investigated in older patients yet. We hypothesized that patients aged 61 years or older experience a significant QoL improvement after STN-DBS with no difference in effect sizes for groups of patients with short and longer disease duration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From four centers (Cologne, London, Manchester, Venice) we identified "older patients" aged 61 years or older with short (≤8 years) or longer disease duration and compared QoL, motor impairment, complications, medication requirements, and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) on baseline and five months after surgery. RESULTS: Mean age/disease duration in 21 subjects with shorter disease duration were 65.5/6.3 years compared to 66.8/14.6 in 33 subjects with longer disease duration. The short disease duration group was affected by less baseline motor complications (p = 0.002). QoL in the short/longer disease duration group improved by 35/20% (p = 0.010/p = 0.006), motor complications by 40/44% (p = 0.018/p < 0.001), and medication requirements by 51/49% (both p < 0.001). MMSE remained unchanged in both groups. CONCLUSION: Patients aged 61 years or older benefited from STN-DBS regardless of short (≤8 years) or longer (>8 years) disease duration. Our results contribute to the debate about DBS selection criteria and timing and call for prospective confirmation in a larger cohort.
