RESUMO

Research has evolved on aerobic granular sludge (AGS) process, but still there are very few studies on the treatment of excess AGS sludge, with almost none considering its aerobic digestion. Here therefore, the aerobic digestibility of typical AGS sludge was assessed. Granules were produced from acetate-based synthetic wastewater (WW) and were subjected to aerobic digestion for 64 d. The stabilization process was monitored over time through physical-chemical parameters, oxygen uptake rates (OUR) and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The microbial analyses revealed that the cultivated granules were dominated by slow-growing bacteria, mainly ordinary heterotrophic organisms with potential for polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) aerobic storage (PHA-OHOs), polyphosphate and glycogen accumulating organisms (PAOs and GAOs), fermentative anaerobes and nitrifiers (AOB and NOB). Differential abundance analysis of the bacterial data (before versus after digestion) discriminated between the most vulnerable microbiome genera and those most resistant to aerobic digestion. Furthermore, modeling of the stabilization process determined that the endogenous decay rate constant (bH) for the heterotrophs present in the granules was notably low; bH = 0.05 d-1 (average), four times less than for common activated sludge (AS), which is rated at 0.2 d-1. For first time, the research reveals another important feature of AGS sludge, i.e. the slow-decaying character of its bacteria (along with their known slow-growing character). This results in slower stabilization, need of bigger digesters and reconsideration of the specific OUR limits in biosolids regulations (SOUR limit of 1.5 mg/gTSS.h), for waste AGS compared to conventional waste AS. The study suggests that aerobic digestion of waste AGS (fully-granulated) could differ from that of conventional AS. Future work is needed on aerobic digestibility of real AGS sludges from municipal and industrial WWs, compared to synthetic WWs.

The study investigated the mechanisms and microbial communities underlying the long-term stability and removal performances shown by aerobic granular sludge (AGS) reactor involving polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) aerobic-storing bacteria. The characteristics of the sludge, removal performances and bacterial community structure were determined. The prevailing metabolic phenotype was similar in the parent conventional activated sludge (CAS) reactor and its upgraded AGS version, showing high COD and NH4 uptake, versus low P and N reduction. Polyphosphate and glycogen accumulating organisms, PAO and GAO, were not enriched in the reactors despite initial targeting of anaerobic-aerobic cycle. Instead, PHA-aerobic storing bacteria (Thauera and Paracoccus) were dominant, but revealing a stable AGS system for BOD and N removal. The PAO/GAO failed selection and Thauera overgrowth were analyzed for beneficial use in developing alternative AGS technology for BOD and N removal applications.

The objective of the present study was to determine the optimum operating temperature of laboratory-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors during the treatment of a chocolate-processing industry wastewater at medium applied organic loading rates (OLRappl). Four UASB reactors were operated at different temperature (15, 20, 25 and 30 °C) and three OLRappl (2, 4 and 6 kg soluble chemical oxygen demand (CODs)/(m3 d)). The flowrate and the hydraulic retention time were constant (11.5 L/d and 6 h, respectively). The monitored parameters were pH, temperature, CODs, and total and volatile suspended solids. The CODs removal efficiency (RE) and biogas production rate (BPR) were calculated. The 15 °C UASB reactor had the lowest RE (39 to 78%) due to the low operating temperature. Regardless of the OLRappl, the RE of the 20, 25 and 30 °C reactors was high and similar to each other (between 88 and 94%). The BPR of the four UASB reactors had the same behaviour as the RE (BPR of 15 °C: 0.3 to 0.5 Lbiogas/(Lreactor d) (Lb/(Lr d)) and BPR of 20, 25 and 30 °C: 0.5 to 1.9 Lb/(Lr d)).

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Fat distribution is a strong and independent predictor of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and is usually determined using conventional anthropometry in epidemiological studies. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) can measure total and regional adiposity more accurately. Nonetheless, whether DXA provides more precise estimates of cardiovascular risk in relation to total and regional adiposity is not known. We determined the strength of the associations between DXA- and conventional anthropometry determined fat distribution and T2D and CVD risk markers. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Waist (WC) and hip circumference (HC) and DXA was used to measure total and regional adiposity in 4950 (2119 men) participants aged 29-55 years from the Oxford Biobank without pre-existing T2D or CVD. Cross-sectional associations were compared between WC and HC vs. DXA-determined regional adiposity (all z-score normalised) with impaired fasting glucose, hypertriglyceridemia, hypertension and insulin resistance (IR). RESULTS: Following adjustment for total adiposity, upper body adiposity measurements showed consistently increased risk of T2D and CVD risk markers except for abdominal subcutaneous fat in both sexes, and arm fat in men, which showed protective associations. Among upper adiposity depots, visceral fat mass showed stronger odds ratios (OR) ranging from 1.69 to 3.64 compared with WC 1.07-1.83. Among lower adiposity depots, HC showed modest protection for IR in both sexes (men: OR 0.80 (95% confidence interval 0.67, 0.96); women: 0.69 (0.56, 0.86)), whereas gynoid fat and in particular leg fat showed consistent and strong protective effects for all outcomes in both men and women. The differential effect of body fat distribution on CVD and T2D were more pronounced at higher levels of total adiposity. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with DXA, conventional anthropometry underestimates the associations of regional adiposity with T2D and CVD risk markers. After correcting for overall adiposity, greater subcutaneous fat mass in particular in the lower body is protective relative to greater android or visceral adipose tissue mass.

Applying ozone to the return flow in an activated sludge (AS) process is a way for reducing the residual solids production. To be able to extend the activated sludge models to the ozone-AS process, adequate prediction of the tri-atoms effects on the particulate COD fractions is needed. In this study, the biomass inactivation, COD mineralization, and solids dissolution were quantified in batch tests and dose-response models were developed as a function of the reacted ozone doses (ROD). Three kinds of model-sludge were used. S1 was a lab-cultivated synthetic sludge with two components (heterotrophs XH and XP). S2 was a digestate of S1 almost made by the endogenous residues, XP. S3 was from a municipal activated sludge plant. The specific ozone uptake rate (SO3UR, mgO3/gCOD.h) was determined as a tool for characterizing the reactivity of the sludges. SO3UR increased with the XH fraction and decreased with more XP. Biomass inactivation was exponential (e-ß.ROD) as a function of the ROD doses. The percentage of solids reduction was predictable through a linear model (CMiner + Ysol ROD), with a fixed part due to mineralization (CMiner) and a variable part from the solubilization process. The parameters of the models, i.e. the inactivation and the dissolution yields (ß, 0.008-0.029 (mgO3/mgCODini)-1 vs Ysol, 0.5-2.8 mg CODsol/mgO3) varied in magnitude, depending on the intensity of the scavenging reactions and potentially the compactness of the flocs for each sludge.

Most cancer treatments efficacy depends on tumor metastasis suppression, where tumor suppressor genes play an important role. Maspin (Mammary Serine Protease Inhibitor), an non-inhibitory serpin has been reported as a potential tumor suppressor to influence cell migration, adhesion, proliferation and apoptosis in in vitro and in vivo experiments in last two decades. Lack of computational investigations hinders its ability to go through clinical trials. Previously, we reported first computational model for maspin effects on tumor growth using artificial neural network and cellular automata paradigm with in vitro data support. This paper extends the previous in silico model by encompassing how maspin influences cell migration and the cell-extracellular matrix interaction in subcellular level. A feedforward neural network was used to define each cell behavior (proliferation, quiescence, apoptosis) which followed a cell-cycle algorithm to show the microenvironment impacts over tumor growth. Furthermore, the model concentrates how the in silico experiments results can further confirm the fact that maspin reduces cell migration using specific in vitro data verification method. The data collected from in vitro and in silico experiments formulates an unsupervised learning problem which can be solved by using different clustering algorithms. A density based clustering technique was developed to measure the similarity between two datasets based on the number of links between instances. Our proposed clustering algorithm first finds the nearest neighbors of each instance, and then redefines the similarity between pairs of instances in terms of how many nearest neighbors share the two instances. The number of links between two instances is defined as the number of common neighbors they have. The results showed significant resemblances with in vitro experimental data. The results also offer a new insight into the dynamics of maspin and establish as a metastasis suppressor gene for further molecular research.

BACKGROUND: Growth and feeding during infancy have been associated with later life body mass index. However, the associations of infant feeding, linear growth and weight gain relative to linear growth with separate components of body composition remain unclear. METHODS: Of 5551 children with collected growth and infant-feeding data in a prospective cohort study (Amsterdam Born Children and their Development), body composition measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis at the age of 5-6 years was available for 2227 children. We assessed how feeding (duration of full breastfeeding and timing of introduction of complementary feeding) and conditional variables representing linear growth and relative weight gain were associated with childhood fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM). RESULTS: Birth weight was positively associated with both FFM and FM in childhood, and more strongly with FFM than FM. Faster linear growth and faster relative weight gain at all ages in infancy were positively associated with childhood FFM and FM. The associations with FM were stronger for relative weight gain than for linear growth (FM z score: ß coefficient 0.23 (95% con 0.19 to 0.26), P<0.001 and 0.14 (0.11 to 0.17), P<0.001 per s.d. change in relative weight gain and linear growth between 1 and 3 months, respectively). Compared with full breastfeeding <1 month, full breastfeeding >6 months was associated with lower FM (FM z score: -0.17 (-0.28 to -0.05), P=0.005) and lower FFM (FFM z score: -0.13 (-0.23 to -0.03), P=0.015), as was the introduction of complementary feeding >6 months (FM z score: -0.22 (-0.38 to -0.07), P=0.004), compared with <4 months. CONCLUSIONS: Faster infant weight gain is associated with a healthier childhood body composition when it is caused by faster linear growth. Full breastfeeding >6 months and introduction of complementary feeding >6 months are associated with lower childhood FM.

Recent research on Staphylococcus aureus vaccine development has focused on active immunization against Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL), a potent leukotoxin associated with both superficial and severe deep-seated infections. PVL prevalence is highly variable worldwide, but it is unknown to what extent immunity to PVL varies between patients from geographic areas with different PVL-positive S. aureus prevalences. We conducted a retrospective multicentric study of anti-PVL and anti-alpha-toxin (Hla) antibody levels in uninfected adult patients from France (low PVL prevalence; n = 200), Algeria (moderate prevalence; n = 143), and Senegal (high prevalence; n = 228). The antibody levels were quantified by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) procedure. Because Hla is present in virtually all S. aureus strains, its corresponding antibody levels were considered to reflect population exposure to S. aureus. Compared with French participants, the average anti-PVL antibody levels were 2.5-fold and 8.2-fold higher in Algerian and Senegalese participants, respectively (p < 0.001). Conversely, anti-Hla antibody levels did not differ between participants from the three countries, suggesting that the observed differences in anti-PVL antibody levels were not biased by variations in population exposure to S. aureus. Hence, anti-PVL antibody levels in the general populations of France, Algeria, and Senegal vary widely and match variations in PVL-positive S. aureus strain prevalence, with an increasing north-to-south gradient. To conclude, immunity to PVL in a given population correlates with local PVL prevalence. This finding can help to inform PVL vaccine strategies.

OBJECTIVE: Associations between parental and offspring size at birth are well established, but the relative importance of parental growth at different ages as predictors of offspring birthweight is less certain. Here we model parental birthweight and postnatal conditional growth in specific age periods as predictors of offspring birthweight. METHODS: We analyzed data from 3,392 adults participating in four prospective birth cohorts and 5,506 of their offspring. RESULTS: There was no significant heterogeneity by study site or offspring sex. 1SD increase in maternal birthweight was associated with offspring birthweight increases of 102 g, 1SD in maternal length growth 0-2 year with 46 g, and 1SD in maternal height growth Mid-childhood (MC)-adulthood with 27 g. Maternal relative weight measures were associated with 24 g offspring birth weight increases (2 year- MC) and 49 g for MC-adulthood period but not with earlier relative weight 0-2 year. For fathers, birthweight, and linear/length growth from 0-2 year were associated with increases of 57 and 56 g in offspring birthweight, respectively but not thereafter. CONCLUSIONS: Maternal and paternal birthweight and growth from birth to 2 year each predict offspring birthweight. Maternal growth from MC-adulthood, relative weight from 2-MC and MC-adulthood also predict offspring birthweight. These findings suggest that shared genes and/or adequate nutrition during early life for both parents may confer benefits to the next generation, and highlight the importance of maternal height and weight prior to conception. The stronger matrilineal than patrilineal relationships with offspring birth weight are consistent with the hypothesis that improving the early growth conditions of young females can improve birth outcomes in the next generation.

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal programming of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis may link reduced foetal growth with higher adult chronic disease risk. South Asians have a high prevalence of low birth weight and a thin-fat phenotype, which is associated with subsequent type 2 diabetes and the metabolic syndrome. Altered HPA activity could be one of the pathological processes underlying this link. METHODS: Plasma morning cortisol and corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG) concentrations were determined in 528 children aged 9·5 years from a prospective birth cohort in India. They had detailed anthropometry at birth, and current measurements of anthropometry, plasma glucose, insulin and lipid concentrations and blood pressure. Insulin resistance (Homeostasis Model Assessment) and insulin secretion (the 30-min insulin increment) were also assessed. RESULTS: None of the birth measurements were associated with cortisol concentrations, but both birth weight (P = 0·03) and length (P = 0·004) were inversely associated with CBG concentrations. Cortisol concentrations were inversely associated with current body mass index (P = 0·02), and positively associated with glucose (fasting: P < 0·001; 30-min: P = 0·002) concentrations, and systolic blood pressure (P = 0·005), but not insulin resistance or the insulin increment. CONCLUSION: Higher morning cortisol is associated with higher cardiometabolic risk markers in Indian children. Although cortisol concentrations did not appear to be related to birth size, small size at birth was associated with higher CBG levels, and may be one of the processes by which foetal undernutrition affects adult health. The findings suggest a need for dynamic testing of HPA axis activity (such as measuring stress responses).

Cancer metastasis is a complex multistep process which allows cancer cells to establish new tumours in distant organs. The process of metastasis involves cell migration and invasion; it is what makes cancer a fatal disease. The efficiency of most cancer treatments depends on metastasis suppression. Maspin is a type II tumour metastasis suppressor which has multiple cellular effects. It has been described as a key regulatory protein in both the intracellular and extracellular environments. Maspin has been shown to reduce cell migration, invasion, proliferation and angiogenesis, and increase apoptosis and cell-cell adhesion in in vitro and in vivo experiments. The clinical data regarding the predictive effects of maspin expression are variable. To date, the whole cellular mechanisms that maspin uses to influence tumour cell behaviours have not been clearly defined. The diversity of the effects of maspin motivated us to develop an intelligent model to investigate its effects on cellular proliferation and migration. This paper reports a hybrid model of solid tumour growth in order to investigate the impact of maspin on the growth and evolutionary dynamics of the cancer cell. A feed-forward neural network was used to model the behaviours (proliferation, quiescence, apoptosis and/or movement) of each cell, which has been suggested as a suitable model of cell signalling pathways. Results show that maspin reduces migration by 10-40%, confirmed by published in vitro data. The model also shows a reduction in cell proliferation by 20-30% in the presence of maspin. So far, this is the first attempt to model the effect of maspin in a computational model to verify in vitro data. This will provide new insights into the tumour suppressive properties of maspin and inform the development of novel cancer therapies.

The sorption of As(III) and As(V) from aqueous solutions onto iron-modified Petroselinum crispum (PCFe) and iron-modified carbonaceous material from the pyrolysis of P. crispum (PCTTFe) was investigated. The modified sorbents were characterized with scanning electron microscopy. The sorbent elemental composition was determined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The principal functional groups from the sorbents were determined with FT-IR. The specific surfaces and points of zero charge (pzc) of the materials were also determined. As(III) and As(V) sorption onto the modified sorbents were performed in a batch system. After the sorption process, the As content in the liquid and solid phases was determined with atomic absorption and neutron activation analyses, respectively. After the arsenic sorption processes, the desorption of Fe from PCFe and PCTTFe was verified with atomic absorption spectrometry. The morphology of PC changed after iron modification. The specific area and pzc differed significantly between the iron-modified non-pyrolyzed and pyrolyzed P. crispum. The kinetics of the arsenite and arsenate sorption processes were described with a pseudo-second-order model. The Langmuir-Freundlich model provided the isotherms with the best fit. Less than 0.02% of the Fe was desorbed from the PCFe and PCTTFe after the As(III) and As(V) sorption processes.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the performance of a 244-L pilot-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor during the treatment of chocolate-processing industry wastewater under low-temperature conditions (18 ± 0.6 °C) for approximately 250 d. The applied organic loading rate (OLR) was varied between 4 and 7 kg/m(3)/d by varying the influent soluble chemical oxygen demand (CODsol), while keeping the hydraulic retention time constant (6.4 ± 0.3 h). The CODsol removal efficiency was low (59-78%). The measured biogas production increased from 240 ± 54 to 431 ± 61 L/d during the experiments. A significant linear correlation between the measured biogas production and removed OLR indicated that 81.69 L of biogas were produced per kg/m(3) of CODsol removed. Low average reactor volatile suspended solids (VSS) (2,700-4,800 mg/L) and high effluent VSS (177-313 mg/L) were derived in a short sludge retention time (SRT) (4.9 d). The calculated SRT was shorter than those reported in the literature, but did not affect the reactor's performance. Average sludge yield was 0.20 kg-VSS/kg-CODsol. The low-temperature anaerobic treatment was a good option for the pre-treatment of chocolate-processing industry wastewater.

The stability of granules, contaminant removal and microbial structure of an aerobic granular sludge (AGS) process were investigated with a focus on ordinary heterotrophic organisms (OHOs). Long-term stable granules and high removals of COD (97 %), NH4+ (98 %), P (85 %) and total N (77 %) were achieved. Sequencing analyses identified 6.6 % of phosphorus-accumulating organisms in the sludge, concordant with the observed bio-P removal capacity. However, OHOs were the most abundant bacteria in the sludge (70-93 %) without resulting in unstable aggregates. Under current dogmas of microbial competition in activated sludge, it seemed contradictory that OHOs could persist in the long term in the AGS where COD was depleted beginning in the anaerobic phase. Microbial analyses showed that OHOs could survive in granules by micropredation, proteolysis, fermentation and EPS consumption. Heterotrophic-nitrification/ aerobic-denitrification was an active pathway in the AGS. These findings contribute to a better understanding of microbial competition in AGS and its stability.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy disorder that may be associated with inadequate maternal nutrition. Fatty acids are vital for placental and fetal growth. Fatty acid desaturases, key enzymes influencing the metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids, are reported to be associated with cardiometabolic risk. Any imbalance in the levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids can result in increased inflammatory response. The current study reports the levels of erythrocyte fatty acids and desaturase index across gestation in women who develop PE (n = 108) and compares them with non-PE women (n = 216). Maternal erythrocyte fatty acids were measured at 4 time points during pregnancy (i.e., 11-14, 18-22, 26-28 weeks and at delivery) using gas chromatography. Maternal total erythrocyte saturated fatty acids and omega-6/omega-3 fatty acid ratio was higher in the PE group as compared to the non-PE group at 11-14 weeks and 18-22 weeks respectively. Maternal Δ5 desaturase index was lower while Δ6 desaturase index was higher in the PE group at 11-14 and 18-22 weeks. Maternal stearoyl CoA desaturase-18 (SCD-18) index was lower at 11-14 weeks and at delivery. These changes were mainly observed in the early onset PE (EOP) group. Δ6 desaturase index at 11-14 weeks predicted the risk of EOP. Imbalance in fatty acid levels and desaturase indices predate the clinical diagnosis of PE, indicating their role in its pathophysiology. Measurement of fatty acids and desaturase indices in early pregnancy merits evaluation as predictors of risk of PE.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: FTO harbours the strongest known obesity-susceptibility locus in Europeans. While there is growing evidence for a role for FTO in obesity risk in Asians, its association with type 2 diabetes, independently of BMI, remains inconsistent. To test whether there is an association of the FTO locus with obesity and type 2 diabetes, we conducted a meta-analysis of 32 populations including 96,551 East and South Asians. METHODS: All studies published on the association between FTO-rs9939609 (or proxy [r (2) > 0.98]) and BMI, obesity or type 2 diabetes in East or South Asians were invited. Each study group analysed their data according to a standardised analysis plan. Association with type 2 diabetes was also adjusted for BMI. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed to pool all effect sizes. RESULTS: The FTO-rs9939609 minor allele increased risk of obesity by 1.25-fold/allele (p = 9.0 × 10(-19)), overweight by 1.13-fold/allele (p = 1.0 × 10(-11)) and type 2 diabetes by 1.15-fold/allele (p = 5.5 × 10(-8)). The association with type 2 diabetes was attenuated after adjustment for BMI (OR 1.10-fold/allele, p = 6.6 × 10(-5)). The FTO-rs9939609 minor allele increased BMI by 0.26 kg/m(2) per allele (p = 2.8 × 10(-17)), WHR by 0.003/allele (p = 1.2 × 10(-6)), and body fat percentage by 0.31%/allele (p = 0.0005). Associations were similar using dominant models. While the minor allele is less common in East Asians (12-20%) than South Asians (30-33%), the effect of FTO variation on obesity-related traits and type 2 diabetes was similar in the two populations. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: FTO is associated with increased risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes, with effect sizes similar in East and South Asians and similar to those observed in Europeans. Furthermore, FTO is also associated with type 2 diabetes independently of BMI.

UNLABELLED: Growth in early life may predict adult bone health. Our data showed that greater height and body mass index (BMI) gain in utero and infancy are associated with higher peak bone mass, and greater BMI gain in childhood/adolescence with higher peak bone density. These associations are mediated by attained adult height and BMI. INTRODUCTION: To study the relationship of height and BMI during childhood with adult bone mineral content (BMC), areal density (aBMD) and apparent density (BMAD, estimated volumetric density). METHODS: Participants comprised 565 men and women aged 33-39 years from the New Delhi Birth Cohort, India, whose weight and height were recorded at birth and annually during infancy (0-2 years), childhood (2-11 years) and adolescence (11 years-adult). Lumbar spine, femoral neck and forearm BMC and aBMD were measured using dual X-ray absorptiometry; lumbar spine and femoral neck BMAD were calculated. RESULTS: Birth length, and height and height gain during infancy, childhood and adolescence were positively correlated with adult BMC (p≤0.01 all sites except birth length with femoral neck). Correlations increased with height from birth to 6 years, then remained constant for later height measurements. There were no associations with BMAD. BMI at birth, and during childhood and adolescence was also positively correlated with BMC (p < 0.01 all sites). BMI at 11 years, and BMI gain in childhood and adolescence, were correlated with aBMD and BMAD (p < 0.001 for all); these correlations strengthened with increasing age of BMI measurement. The associations with height and BMI in early life became non-significant after adjustment for adult height and BMI. CONCLUSIONS: Greater skeletal growth and BMI gain in utero and during infancy are associated with higher peak BMC, and greater BMI gain in childhood and adolescence is associated with higher peak aBMD and BMAD. These associations are mediated by the attainment of adult height and BMI, respectively.

In the present study the process of adsorption of cadmium from aqueous solutions using Na-zeolitic tuff, Fe-zeolitic tuff and carbonaceous material from pyrolyzed sewage sludge treated with HCl was investigated. The cadmium removal efficiency was studied as a function of contact time, adsorbate concentration, pH and adsorbent dose. The results showed that removal of cadmium was best described by the Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm. The kinetic experimental results were best described by the pseudo-first order model. The results indicate that the adsorption mechanism is physical and chemical sorption on heterogeneous materials. The maximum retention of cadmium was at pH around 6.0 for the materials. In kinetic studies, the Na and Fe modified zeolitic tuffs showed similar sorption capacities for cadmium and they were higher than the capacity found for carbonaceous material.

This study was conducted at a centralized wastewater treatment plant that receives discharges from nearly 160 industries. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) was fractionated for two objectives: delineation of the limits of the activated sludge process being used at the plant, and evaluation of the potential environmental impact of the treated effluent. Physico-chemical analyses, respirometric and biodegradation tests, as well as COD fractionation were carried out. Molasses-wastewaters were determined to be the major contribution to the plant. The influent was dark brown in color, with a relatively high content of both organics (2503 mg/L COD) and salts (5459 µS/cm conductivity), but a low biochemical oxygen demand (568 mg/L BOD(5)) and BOD(5)/COD ratio (0.24). The degradability of the organics was limited by the high content of inert soluble COD (S(I)). The COD fractionation pattern was 40-20-40% for S(I), X(I) (inerts) and S(H) (soluble hydrolyzable), respectively. More than 90% BOD(5) removal was obtained, which was sufficient for the plant to meet the national Standards. However, the effluent discharged into the river was intensely colored and polluted (>1000 mg/L COD, >5000 µS/cm), emphasizing the need for legislation regulating COD, color and salinity, and for upgraded treatment methods worldwide for molasses wastewaters.

BACKGROUND: There is minimal information about the association of head growth at different stages of childhood with cognitive ability. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship of newborn head size and head growth during infancy, childhood and adolescence with attained education, a proxy for cognitive ability. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective birth cohort study. SETTING: Married women living in South Delhi between 1969 and 1973. PARTICIPANTS: The New Delhi Birth Cohort study followed up 8030 newborns born in 1969-1973 with head circumference, weight and height measurements at birth and 6-12 monthly until adulthood. Of these, 1526 men and women were followed up at the age of 26-32 years. OUTCOMES: Association between years of schooling, as an indicator of cognitive ability, and newborn head circumference and conditional measures of head growth during infancy, childhood and adolescence. RESULTS: In unadjusted analyses, newborn head size was positively associated with years of education [(b (95% CI)=0.30 (0.14 to 0.47) years per SD head circumference], as was head growth from birth to 6 months [b (95% CI)=0.44 (0.28 to 0.60) years per SD conditional head growth], 6 months to 2 years [b (95% CI)=0.31 (0.15 to 0.47) years per SD conditional head growth] and 2 to 11 years [b (95% CI)=0.20 (0.03 to 0.36) years per SD conditional head growth]. There were similar findings for height and body mass index (BMI). In the adjusted model containing all growth measures, gestational age, and socio-economic status (SES) at birth as predictors, only SES was positively associated with educational attainment. CONCLUSION: Educational attainment in this population is positively associated with socioeconomic status and its influence on inter-related early life (fetal, infant and childhood) factors like nutritional status and brain growth.
