RESUMO
We present a spatial and wave-vector resolved study of the electronic structure of micron sized ferroelectric domains at the surface of a BaTiO(3)(001) single crystal. The n-type doping of the BaTiO(3) is controlled by in situ vacuum and oxygen annealing, providing experimental evidence of a surface paraelectric-ferroelectric transition below a critical doping level. Real space imaging of photoemission threshold, core level and valence band spectra show contrast due to domain polarization. Reciprocal space imaging of the electronic structure using linearly polarized light provides unambiguous evidence for the presence of both in- and out-of-plane polarization with two- and fourfold symmetry, respectively. The results agree well with first principles calculations.
RESUMO
A sizable enhancement of the circular dichroism in photoelectron spectroscopy has been measured and computed for the metal complex Δ-cobalt(III) tris-acetylacetonate highest occupied molecular orbital state in the region of the Co 3pâ3d Fano resonance. In the resonance the dichroism reaches the maximum value of 5% and even changes its sign as compared to the direct photoionization channel. We ascribe this enhancement to electron correlation processes, namely, with the coupling between discrete excitations and the continuum, which is correctly described in the time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) framework. These findings open new physical aspects of photoelectron circular dichroism that now can be interpreted not only via the simple direct ionization, but also through more complex electron correlation processes.
RESUMO
We have performed x-ray two-photon photoelectron spectroscopy using the Linac Coherent Light Source x-ray free-electron laser in order to study double core-hole (DCH) states of CO2, N2O, and N2. The experiment verifies the theory behind the chemical sensitivity of two-site DCH states by comparing a set of small molecules with respect to the energy shift of the two-site DCH state and by extracting the relevant parameters from this shift.
RESUMO
The S 2p Auger spectrum of SF(6) has been studied in the region of the 2t(2g) and 4e(g) resonances. The partial Auger spectra due to the ionization of the 2p spin-orbit components and of a shake-up satellite state have been measured selectively by tuning the photon energy and using the Auger electron-photoelectron coincidence technique. A detailed analysis of the Auger spectrum has also been performed using the Green's function-based second-order algebraic diagrammatic construction method.
RESUMO
Photoabsorption and S 2p photoionization of the SF(6) molecule have been studied experimentally and theoretically in the excitation energy range up to 100 eV above the S 2p ionization potentials. In addition to the well-known 2t(2g) and 4e(g) shape resonances, the spin-orbit-resolved S 2p photoionization cross sections display two weak resonances between 200 and 210 eV, a wide resonance around 217 eV, a Fano-type resonance around 240 eV, and a second wide resonance around 260 eV. Calculations based on time-dependent density functional theory allow us to assign the 217-eV and 260-eV features to the shape resonances in S 2p photoionization. The Fano resonance is caused by the interference between the direct S 2p photoionization channel and the resonant channel that results from the participator decay of the S 2s(-1)6t(1u) excited state. The weak resonances below 210-eV photon energy, not predicted by theory, are tentatively suggested to originate from the coupling between S 2p shake-up photoionization and S 2p single-hole photoionization. The experimental and calculated angular anisotropy parameters for S 2p photoionization are in good agreement.
RESUMO
We present a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the valence electronic structure of porphyrin-derived molecules. The valence photoemission spectra of the free-base tetraphenylporphyrin and of the octaethylporphyrin molecule were measured using synchrotron radiation and compared with theoretical spectra calculated using the GW method and the density-functional method within the generalized gradient approximation. Only the GW results could reproduce the experimental data. We found that the contribution to the orbital energies due to electronic correlations has the same linear behavior in both molecules, with larger deviations in the vicinity of the HOMO level. This shows the importance of adequate treatment of electronic correlations in these organic systems.
RESUMO
The inner shell excitation of pyrimidine and some halogenated pyrimidines near the C and N K-edges has been investigated experimentally by near edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and theoretically by density functional theory calculations. The selected targets, 5-Br-pyrimidine, 2-Br-pyrimidine, 2-Cl-pyrimidine, and 5-Br-2-Cl-pyrimidine, allow the effects of the functionalization of the pyrimidine ring to be studied either as a function of different halogen atoms bound to the same molecular site or as a function of the same halogen atom bound to different molecular sites. The results show that the individual characteristics of the different spectra of the substituted pyrimidines can be rationalized in terms of variations in electronic and geometrical structures of the molecule depending on the localization and the electronegativity of the substituent.

The inner shell ionization of pyrimidine and some halogenated pyrimidines has been investigated experimentally by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and theoretically by density functional theory (DFT) methods. The selected targets-5-Br-pyrimidine, 2-Br-pyrimidine, 2-Cl-pyrimidine, and 5-Br-2-Cl-pyrimidine-allowed the study of the effect of the functionalization of the pyrimidine ring by different halogen atoms bound to the same molecular site, or by the same halogen atom bound to different molecular sites. The theoretical investigation of the inductive and resonance effects in the C(1s) ionization confirms the soundness of the resonance model for a qualitative description of the properties of an aromatic system. Moreover, the combination of the experimental results and the theoretical analysis provides a detailed description of the effects of the halogen atom on the screening of a C(1s) hole in the aromatic pyrimidine ring.
RESUMO
Many properties of real materials can be modeled using ab initio methods within a single-particle picture. However, for an accurate theoretical treatment of excited states, it is necessary to describe electron-electron correlations including interactions with bosons: phonons, plasmons, or magnons. In this work, by comparing spin- and momentum-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements to many-body calculations carried out with a newly developed first-principles method, we show that a kink in the electronic band dispersion of a ferromagnetic material can occur at much deeper binding energies than expected (Eb = 1.5 eV). We demonstrate that the observed spectral signature reflects the formation of a many-body state that includes a photohole bound to a coherent superposition of renormalized spin-flip excitations. The existence of such a many-body state sheds new light on the physics of the electron-magnon interaction which is essential in fields such as spintronics and Fe-based superconductivity.
RESUMO
Nanoscale redox reactions in transition metal oxides are believed to be the physical foundation of memristive devices, which present a highly scalable, low-power alternative for future non-volatile memory devices. The interface between noble metal top electrodes and Nb-doped SrTiO3 single crystals may serve as a prominent but not yet well-understood example of such memristive devices. In this report, we will present experimental evidence that nanoscale redox reactions and the associated valence change mechanism are indeed responsible for the resistance change in noble metal/Nb-doped SrTiO3 junctions with dimensions ranging from the micrometer scale down to the nanometer regime. Direct verification of the valence change mechanism is given by spectromicroscopic characterization of switching filaments. Furthermore, it is found that the resistance change over time is driven by the reoxidation of a previously oxygen-deficient region. The retention times of the low resistance states, accordingly, can be dramatically improved under vacuum conditions as well as through the insertion of a thin Al2O3 layer which prevents this reoxidation. These insights finally confirm the resistive switching mechanism at these interfaces and are therefore of significant importance for the study and application of memristive devices based on Nb-doped SrTiO3 as well as systems with similar switching mechanisms.
RESUMO
A novel technique to lithograph the MoS2 surface is described here. Mechanically exfoliated MoS2 flakes have been patterned with an atomic force microscope tip. After the patterning process, the lithographed areas have been removed by selective chemical etching. The electronic properties of the MoS2 flakes have been analyzed with spatially resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, with tunable incident photon energy, provided by a synchrotron light source. Tens of meV core level shifts can be recorded in relation to the flakes edges, coming from both the exfoliation and from the lithography.
RESUMO
Using soft X-ray photoelectron emission microscopy (XPEEM), complemented by scanning Auger microscopy (SAM) and scanning capacitance microscopy, we have quantitatively studied the incorporation of silicon and band bending at the surface (m-facet) of an individual, highly conductive Si-doped GaN micro-wires (Tchoulfian et al., Applied Physics Letters 102 (12), 2013). Electrically active n-dopants Si atoms in Ga interstitial sites are detected as nitride bonding states in the high-resolution Si2p core level spectra, and represent only a small fraction (<10%) of the overall Si surface concentration measured by SAM. The derived carrier concentration of 2×10(21) at cm(-3) is in reasonable agreement with electrical measurements. A consistent surface band bending of ~1 eV is directly evidenced by surface photo-voltage measurements. Such an approach combining different surface-sensitive microscopies is of interest for studying other heavily doped semiconducting wires.
RESUMO
Several experimental methods allow measuring the spatial probability density of electrons in atoms, molecules and solids, that is, the absolute square of the respective single-particle wave function. But it is an intrinsic problem of the measurement process that the information about the phase is generally lost during the experiment. The symmetry of this phase, however, is a crucial parameter for the knowledge of the full orbital information in real space. Here, we report on a key experiment that demonstrates that the phase symmetry can be derived from a strictly experimental approach from the circular dichroism in the angular distribution of photoelectrons. In combination with the electron density derived from the same experiment, the full quantum mechanical wave function can thus be determined experimentally.
RESUMO
The Mg K edge photoabsorption spectrum and the B 1s, Mg 1s, Mg 2p and valence band photoemission spectra of polycrystalline magnesium diboride have been measured. The photoabsorption spectra of the diboride and the oxide, which is present as an impurity, were separated by measuring the Auger electron partial yield at electron energies characteristic of each phase. The spectra are consistent with published calculations of the density of unoccupied p symmetry states. Better agreement is obtained with calculations for the ground state of the system than with ones for the excited state. Valence band photoemission spectra were measured at photon energies corresponding to core resonances, but, within the signal to noise level of the spectra, no resonant enhancement was observed. This is consistent with the delocalized nature of the valence band.
RESUMO
The beta angular asymmetry and D dichroic asymmetry parameters of the methyl-oxirane highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) band have been experimentally investigated with vibrational resolution using synchrotron radiation. A theoretical calculation of the Franck-Condon factors between vibrational ground state and different ionic vibrational states, in the Born-Oppenheimer harmonic approximation, has been performed in order to gain information on the vibrational states mainly involved in the HOMO photoelectron band. The general good agreement between theoretical and experimental results allows a reliable assignment of the major features. The experimental determination of beta and D shows their dependence on the different final vibrational states. This paper reports, for the first time, experimental evidence of the dependence of the dichroic D parameter on the vibrational excitation of the ion.
RESUMO
The Stark effect on the doubly excited states of helium below the N=2 threshold has been studied by vacuum ultraviolet fluorescence yield spectroscopy. Two new series of states are observed at moderate fields (<10 kV/cm), and assigned to the previously unobserved even 1pe series, and a group of 1De series. The 1Se states are observed indirectly via their mixing with nearby 1 po states. The observations at moderate field contradict theoretical predictions that field strengths about an order of magnitude greater are necessary to observe the Stark effect on He doubly excited states at low quantum numbers.
RESUMO
The CO and CO(2) carbon and oxygen Auger spectra have been measured by electron impact and compared with accurate theoretical calculations accounting for the effects of the dynamics of the nuclei on the energy and linewidth of the Auger bands. The calculations for CO were previously published [L. S. Cederbaum et al., J. Chem. Phys. 95, 6634 (1991)], while for CO(2) they are new and presented here for the first time. For both molecules, particular attention has been paid to the low-kinetic-energy region of the spectra, which corresponds to doubly charged ion states with the two holes mainly localized in the inner valence region. New bands have been observed. It is shown that a proper consideration of the vibrational broadening and shift of the bands due to the dynamics of the nuclei is needed to assign these features. For CO, very large energy shifts between corresponding features in the C 1s and O 1s spectra have been observed, confirming the theoretical predictions of 1991. The new computed spectra of CO(2) allow a very accurate analysis of the experiments over the whole energy range.
