RESUMO

Recently, several studies have demonstrated that heart failure (HF) may increase the risk of incident cancer. However, this association has not been statistically and systematically verified by any comprehensive pooled analyses. We performed a meta-analysis on cancer morbidity and co-mortality of adults with HF in a large sample size to explore the relationship between HF and the risk of developing cancer. From inception to April 2019, we searched PubMed and EMBASE for published relevant articles on patients with HF diagnosed with cancer afterwards, with reported outcomes of morbidity and mortality. Two investigators independently reviewed these included studies. Study data were independently extracted using predefined data extraction forms. Random and fixed-effects models were fit for the study duration. This analysis consisted of 4 cohort studies comprising 5,004,251 participants. The relative risk (RR) for incident cancer was 1.22 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.13-1.33) indicating that patients with HF may have a higher risk of developing cancer. The pooled RR of co-mortality was 2.03 (95% CI, 1.13-3.65), indicating that HF associated with cancer increases the risk of mortality. In this meta-analysis and systematic review, our results demonstrated that heart failure may increase the risk of incident cancer and that HF associated with cancer increases the risk of mortality.

BACKGROUND: Although previous clinical randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have tested the effect of a variety of cardioprotective agents on cancer therapy-induced cardiotoxicity, the number of included patients was limited, and the results remained controversial. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the preventive or therapeutic effects of cardioprotective agents on heart failure (HF) caused by cardiotoxicity induced by cancer therapy. METHODS: We included trials of the following cardioprotective drugs: Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, beta-blockers, aldosterone antagonists and stains. We extracted the relevant information with predefined data extraction forms, and assessed the risk of bias in randomized controlled trials with the Cochrane risk of bias tool. The primary outcome was the left ventricular ejection fraction of patients after chemotherapy. We used the random-effects model to carry out pair-wise meta-analysis, and then carry out the random-effects network meta-analysis within the Bayesian framework. RESULTS: Twenty-two relevant RCTs, including 1 916 patients (79.6 % women) with a mean age of 48.4 years, were included. Based on the evaluation of all drug species from 20 studies (26 comparisons), the analysis found that 4 therapies, aldosterone antagonists (MD, 12.78 [95 % CI, 2.87-22.69] and MD, 13.75 [95 % CI, 2.21-25.30]), ACEIs (MD, 6.79 [95 % CI, 2.11-11.48] and MD, 7.76 [95 % CI, 2.64-12.88]), statin (MD, 8.35 [95 % CI, 1.11-15.59]), and beta-blockers (MD, 4.00 [95 % CI, 0.87-7.14]), had a higher efficacy than placebo and/or control, suggesting an LVEF protective effect of cardioprotective therapy. In the analysis classified by single drug or drug combination, based on 22 studies (31 comparisons), spironolactone (MD, 12.77 [95 % CI, 1.76-23.79] and MD, 14.62 [95 % CI, 1.70-27.55]), a combination of candesartan and carvedilol (MD, 12.40 [95 % CI, 0.99-23.81]), enalapril (MD, 7.35 [95 % CI, 1.16-13.54] and MD, 9.20 [95 % CI, 2.61-15.79]), and statin (MD, 8.36 [95 % CI, 0.36-16.36]) showed significant benefits in protecting left ventricular (LV) systolic function compared with the placebo and/or control. CONCLUSION: When classified according to drug type, aldosterone antagonists, ACEIs, statins, and beta-blockers could substantially improve the LV systolic function. In the analysis classified by single drug or drug combination, spironolactone, enalapril, and statin have a significant cardioprotective effect. However, ARBs have no cardioprotective effect and fail to improve the LVEF.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac injury is now a common complication of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), but it remains unclear whether cardiac injury-related biomarkers can be independent predictors of mortality and severe disease development or intensive care unit (ICU) admission. METHODS: Two investigators searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, MedRxiv, and ChinaXiv databases for articles published through March 30, 2020. Retrospective studies assessing the relationship between the prognosis of COVID-19 patients and levels of troponin I (TnI) and other cardiac injury biomarkers (creatine kinase [CK], CK myocardial band [CK-MB], lactate dehydrogenase [LDH], and interleukin-6 [IL-6]) were included. The data were extracted independently by two investigators. RESULTS: The analysis included 23 studies with 4631 total individuals. The proportions of severe disease, ICU admission, or death among patients with non-elevated TnI (or troponin T [TnT]), and those with elevated TnI (or TnT) were 12.0% and 64.5%, 11.8% and 56.0%, and 8.2% and. 59.3%, respectively. Patients with elevated TnI levels had significantly higher risks of severe disease, ICU admission, and death (RR 5.57, 95% CI 3.04 to 10.22, P < 0.001; RR 6.20, 95% CI 2.52 to 15.29, P < 0.001; RR 5.64, 95% CI 2.69 to 11.83, P < 0.001). Patients with an elevated CK level were at significantly increased risk of severe disease or ICU admission (RR 1.98, 95% CI 1.50 to 2.61, P < 0.001). Patients with elevated CK-MB levels were at a higher risk of developing severe disease or requiring ICU admission (RR 3.24, 95% CI 1.66 to 6.34, P = 0.001). Patients with newly occurring arrhythmias were at higher risk of developing severe disease or requiring ICU admission (RR 13.09, 95% CI 7.00 to 24.47, P < 0.001). An elevated IL-6 level was associated with a higher risk of developing severe disease, requiring ICU admission, or death. CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 patients with elevated TnI levels are at significantly higher risk of severe disease, ICU admission, and death. Elevated CK, CK-MB, LDH, and IL-6 levels and emerging arrhythmia are associated with the development of severe disease and need for ICU admission, and the mortality is significantly higher in patients with elevated LDH and IL-6 levels.

Retrospective data evaluated increases in advanced medical support for children with medically attended acute respiratory illness (MAARI) during influenza outbreak periods (IOP). Advanced support included hospitalisation, intensive care unit admission, or mechanical ventilation, for children aged 0-17 years hospitalised in Maryland's 50 acute-care hospitals over 12 influenza seasons. Weekly numbers of positive influenza tests in the Maryland area defined IOP for each season as the fewest consecutive weeks, including the peak week containing at least 85% of positive tests with a 2-week buffer on either side of the IOP. Peak IOP (PIOP) was defined as four consecutive weeks containing the peak week with the most number of positive influenza tests. Off-PIOP was defined as the 'shoulder' weeks during each IOP. Non-influenza season (NIS) was the remaining weeks of that study season. Rate ratios of mean daily MAARI-related admissions resulting in advanced medical support outcomes during PIOP or Off-PIOP were compared with the NIS and were significantly elevated for all 12 study seasons combined. The results suggest that influenza outbreaks are associated with increased advanced medical support utilisation by children with MAARI. We feel that this data may help preparedness for severe influenza epidemics or pandemic.

Ischemic stroke, particularly permanent occlusion, accounts for the overwhelming majority of all strokes. In addition to the occlusion of arteries, the inflammatory response plays a pivotal role in the severity of the cerebral injury and its clinical prognosis. Here, panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) extracted from a traditional Chinese herbal medicine was administered following permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in rats to explore the neuroprotective mechanisms against ischemic injury. The results showed that MCAO surgery was successful in producing an infarct and that PNS and nimodipine could ameliorate the neurological deficits. The expression levels of interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1) were increased, while the level of interleukin-10 (IL-10) was reduced in the infarct cortex 7 days after MCAO, as assessed by immunohistochemistry, western blotting and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). PNS was able to markedly reduce the overexpression of IL-1ß and TNF-α while significantly promoting the expression of IL-10, but did not affect the elevated expression of TGF-ß1. Meanwhile, nimodipine was able to significantly reduce the expression of IL-1ß and TNF-α, but had no obvious effect on IL-10 or TGF-ß1. In addition, the serum levels of TNF-α, IL-10 and TGF-ß1 were basically consistent with cerebral tissue results; however, the IL-1ß levels did not differ. We conclude that PNS can directly down-regulate the overexpression of proinflammatory factors IL-1ß and TNF-α while up-regulating the expression of anti-inflammatory factor IL-10 in the core region of the cerebral infarct, thereby preventing neurological damage in rats after permanent MCAO.

PURPOSE: To investigate the efficacy of the Wallis implant after lumbar discectomy compared with discectomy alone for primary lumbar disc herniation. Seventy-seven patients with primary lumbar disc herniation were randomly assigned to undergo either posterior lumbar discectomy with (n=40, Wallis group) or without (n=37, control group) Wallis implantation. The primary outcomes were visual analogue scale score, Japanese Orthopedics Association score, and Oswestry Disability Index. The secondary outcomes were intervertebral disc height, range of motion of the operated segments, complications, and operating time. The primary outcomes at 1 week after treatment (P> 0.05) were not different between groups. The Wallis group had better scores at 12 months (P< 0.05) and the last follow-up visit (P< 0.05), higher disc height (P< 0.001), and significantly longer operating time (P =0.006) than the control group. Combined treatment appears beneficial for pain relief and lumbar function improvement by maintaining intervertebral disc height and limiting the range of motion of the spine compared with lumbar discectomy alone. However, its actual clinical benefit remains controversial because of the longer operating time and the relatively small difference in the visual analogue scale score and Oswestry Disability Index between the groups.

Drought decreases crop productivity more than any other type of environmental stress. Transcription factors (TFs) play crucial roles in regulating plant abiotic stress responses. The Arabidopsis thaliana gene DREB1A/CBF3, encoding a stress-inducible TF, was introduced into Salvia miltiorrhiza Ectopic expression of AtDREB1A resulted in increased drought tolerance, and transgenic lines had higher relative water content and Chl content, and exhibited an increased photosynthetic rate when subjected to drought stress. AtDREB1A transgenic plants generally displayed lower malondialdehyde (MDA), but higher superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) activities under drought stress. In particular, plants with ectopic AtDREB1A expression under the control of the stress-induced RD29A promoter exhibited more tolerance to drought compared with p35S::AtDREB1A transgenic plants, without growth inhibition or phenotypic aberrations. Differential gene expression profiling of wild-type and pRD29A::AtDREB1A transgenic plants following drought stress revealed that the expression levels of various genes associated with the stress response, photosynthesis, signaling, carbohydrate metabolism and protein protection were substantially higher in transgenic plants. In addition, the amount of salvianolic acids and tanshinones was significantly elevated in AtDREB1A transgenic S. miltiorrhiza roots, and most of the genes in the related biosynthetic pathways were up-regulated. Together, these results demonstrated that inducing the expression of a TF can effectively regulate multiple genes in the stress response pathways and significantly improve the resistance of plants to abiotic stresses. Our results also suggest that genetic manipulation of a TF can improve production of valuable secondary metabolites by regulating genes in associated pathways.

In order to improve the driving ability of the explosion wave simulation equipment, reduce the erosion effect of condensed explosives on the explosion wave simulation equipment, improve the safety of the test process, and make better use of the meteorological detonation driving method, it is necessary to optimize the source of the shock wave load in the driving section. Based on the finite volume method of FLACS, a methane detonation driving model corresponding to the test is established to explore the feasibility of using methane as an explosion source to test the structure against explosion shock wave. A methane detonation drive test was carried out to verify the accuracy of the numerical model. Finally, an engineering model for attenuation of shock wave overpressure peak value in pipeline is established by dimensional analysis, and the model coefficient is determined by numerical simulation and test data. The results show that the blast pressure is the highest when the methane volume ratio reaches 9.5 vol% in the methane-air mixture. Simply increasing oxygen content has little effect on the peak overpressure and positive pressure duration of shock wave. In the pure oxygen environment, the detonation effect can be achieved when the volume ratio of methane to oxygen is 1:2, and the incident pressure of the shock wave is proportional to the volume of the gas cloud. When the gas cloud volume is constant, a reasonable selection of methane-oxygen mixture ratio can achieve a better detonation effect, which can effectively increase the peak overpressure of the shock wave in the test section. The research results can provide technical reference for the development of new explosion wave simulation equipment.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), a common subtype of hemorrhagic stroke, often causes severe disability or death. ICH induces adverse events that might lead to secondary brain injury (SBI), and there is currently a lack of specific effective treatment strategies. To provide a new direction for SBI treatment post-ICH, the systematic review discussed how thrombin impacts secondary injury after ICH through several potentially deleterious or protective mechanisms. We included 39 studies and evaluated them using SYRCLE's ROB tool. Subsequently, we explored the potential molecular mechanisms of thrombin-mediated effects on SBI post-ICH in terms of inflammation, iron deposition, autophagy, and angiogenesis. Furthermore, we described the effects of thrombin in endothelial cells, astrocytes, pericytes, microglia, and neurons, as well as the harmful and beneficial effects of high and low thrombin concentrations on ICH. Finally, we concluded the current research status of thrombin therapy for ICH, which will provide a basis for the future clinical application of thrombin in the treatment of ICH.

Importance: Prehypertension increases the risk of developing hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. Early and effective intervention for patients with prehypertension is highly important. Objective: To assess the efficacy of Tai Chi vs aerobic exercise in patients with prehypertension. Design, Setting, and Participants: This prospective, single-blinded randomized clinical trial was conducted between July 25, 2019, and January 24, 2022, at 2 tertiary public hospitals in China. Participants included 342 adults aged 18 to 65 years with prehypertension, defined as systolic blood pressure (SBP) of 120 to 139 mm Hg and/or diastolic BP (DBP) of 80 to 89 mm Hg. Interventions: Participants were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to a Tai Chi group (n = 173) or an aerobic exercise group (n = 169). Both groups performed four 60-minute supervised sessions per week for 12 months. Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was SBP at 12 months obtained in the office setting. Secondary outcomes included SBP at 6 months and DBP at 6 and 12 months obtained in the office setting and 24-hour ambulatory BP at 12 months. Results: Of the 1189 patients screened, 342 (mean [SD] age, 49.3 [11.9] years; 166 men [48.5%] and 176 women [51.5%]) were randomized to 1 of 2 intervention groups: 173 to Tai Chi and 169 to aerobic exercise. At 12 months, the change in office SBP was significantly different between groups by -2.40 (95% CI, -4.39 to -0.41) mm Hg (P = .02), with a mean (SD) change of -7.01 (10.12) mm Hg in the Tai Chi group vs -4.61 (8.47) mm Hg in the aerobic exercise group. The analysis of office SBP at 6 months yielded similar results (-2.31 [95% CI, -3.94 to -0.67] mm Hg; P = .006). Additionally, 24-hour ambulatory SBP (-2.16 [95% CI, -3.84 to -0.47] mm Hg; P = .01) and nighttime ambulatory SBP (-4.08 [95% CI, -6.59 to -1.57] mm Hg; P = .002) were significantly reduced in the Tai Chi group compared with the aerobic exercise group. Conclusions and Relevance: In this study including patients with prehypertension, a 12-month Tai Chi intervention was more effective than aerobic exercise in reducing SBP. These findings suggest that Tai Chi may help promote the prevention of cardiovascular disease in populations with prehypertension. OBJECTIVE: To design a model to capture information on the state and trends of knowledge creation, at both an individual and an organizational level, in order to enhance knowledge management. METHODS: We designed a graph-theoretic knowledge model, the expert knowledge map (EKM), based on literature-based annotation. A case study in the domain of Traditional Chinese Medicine research was used to illustrate the usefulness of the model. RESULTS: The EKM successfully captured various aspects of knowledge and enhanced knowledge management within the case-study organization through the provision of knowledge graphs, expert graphs, and expert-knowledge biography. CONCLUSION: Our model could help to reveal the hot topics, trends, and products of the research done by an organization. It can potentially be used to facilitate knowledge learning, sharing and decision-making among researchers, academicians, students, and administrators of organizations.

Background: In the general population of the United States (U.S.), the relationship between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and mortality (all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related, and cancer-related) is still unclear. Therefore, in this research, we examined the association of DII with mortality caused by all-cause, CVD-related, and cancer-related causes. Methods: Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999-2018 was used for exploring the link between DII and all-cause, CVD-related, and cancer-related mortality through the use of Cox proportional hazard models and restricted cubic spline model. In addition, subgroup analyses were further performed. Results: The study included 29,013 individuals from the NHANES from 1999 to 2018. The DII scores were nominated as low (T1: -5.281-0.724), medium (T2: 0.725-2.513), and high-grade inflammation (T3: 2.514-5.795), with T1 serving as the reference group. The linear positive correlation between DII and all-cause and CVD-related mortality was studied using Cox regression analysis. In the full-adjusted model, as compared with the individuals with T1 DII scores, adjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals for all-cause and CVD-related mortality were 1.149 (1.059, 1.247), and 1.186 (1.084, 1.297), as well as 1.197 (1.032, 1.387), and 1.198 (1.019, 1.409), respectively. However, there was no statistical significance between DII and cancer-related mortality. The RCS plot also showed a significant increase in all-cause and CVD-related mortality with increased DII. Nevertheless, as DII scores increased, cancer-related mortality first increased and then decreased. Conclusion: All-cause and CVD-related mortality are linked independently to high DII scores, independently. Further study of the association of DII scores with mortality caused by all-cause, CVD-related, and cancer-related causes is necessary to explore.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Xingnaojing(XNJ)injection is a traditional Chinese medicine injection with neuroprotective effect, which has been widely used in the treatment of stroke for many years. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to explore the potential mechanism of XNJ in cerebral ischemia mediated by ferroptosis using proteomics and in vivo and in vitro experiments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After the rat model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) was successfully established, they were randomly divided into model, XNJ, and deferoxamine (DFO) group. Triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining, Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), and Nissl staining were used to observe the infarct area, pathological changes and the degree of neuronal apoptosis of rat brain. Proteins extracted from rat brain tissues were analyzed by quantitative proteomics using tandem mass tags (TMT). Western blotting and immunohistochemical assessment were used to measure the expression of ferroptosis-related proteins. In vitro, the SH-SY5Y cells were subjected to hypoxia (37°C/5% CO2/1% O2) for 24 h to observe the survival rate, and detect the reactive oxygen species (ROS) content and ferroptosis-related proteins. RESULTS: In TTC and H&E experiments, we found that XNJ drug treatment reduced the infarct volume and brain tissue damage in MCAO rats. Nissl staining also showed that compared with MCAO group rats, the Nissl bodies of brain tissue after XNJ drug intervention were clear with a 3.54-fold increased times, suggesting that XNJ improved cerebral infraction, and neurological deficits in MCAO rats. Proteomics identified 101 intersected differentially expressed proteins (DEPs). According to the bioinformatics analysis, these DEPs were closely related to ferroptosis. Further research indicated that MCAO-induced cerebral ischemia was alleviated by upregulating recombinant glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), ferroportin (FPN) expression, Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression, and downregulating cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), transferring receptor (TFR) and divalent metal transporter-1 (DMT1) expression after XNJ treatment. In addition, in vitro experiment indicated that XNJ improved the survival rate of hypoxia-damaged SH-SY5Y cells. XNJ increased the level of GPX4 and inhibited the protein expression of COX-2 and TFR after cell hypoxia. Moreover, different concentrations of XNJ (0.25%, 0.5%, 1%) reduced the ROS content of hypoxic cells, suggesting that XNJ could inhibit hypoxia-induced cell damage by regulating the expression of ferroptosis-related proteins and decreasing the production of ROS. CONCLUSIONS: XNJ could promote the recovery of neurological function in MCAO rats and hypoxia SH-SY5Y cells by regulating ferroptosis.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a stroke subtype characterized by non-traumatic rupture of blood vessels in the brain, resulting in blood pooling in the brain parenchyma. Despite its lower incidence than ischemic stroke, ICH remains a significant contributor to stroke-related mortality, and most survivors experience poor outcomes that significantly impact their quality of life. ICH has been accompanied by various complex pathological damage, including mechanical damage of brain tissue, hematoma mass effect, and then leads to inflammatory response, thrombin activation, erythrocyte lysis, excitatory amino acid toxicity, complement activation, and other pathological changes. Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that activation of complement cascade occurs in the early stage of brain injury, and the excessive complement activation after ICH will affect the occurrence of secondary brain injury (SBI) through multiple complex pathological processes, aggravating brain edema, and pathological brain injury. Therefore, the review summarized the pathological mechanisms of brain injury after ICH, specifically the complement role in ICH, and its related pathological mechanisms, to comprehensively understand the specific mechanism of different complements at different stages after ICH. Furthermore, we systematically reviewed the current state of complement-targeted therapies for ICH, providing a reference and basis for future clinical transformation of complement-targeted therapy for ICH.

BACKGROUND: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a life-threatening stroke subtype with high rates of disability and mortality. Naoxueshu oral liquid is a proprietary Chinese medicine that absorbs hematoma and exhibits neuroprotective effects in patients with ICH. However, the underlying mechanisms remain obscure. PURPOSE: Exploring and elucidating the pharmacological mechanism of Naoxueshu oral liquid in the treatment of ICH. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database was used to download the gene expression data on ICH. ICH-related hub modules were obtained by weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) of differentially co-expressed genes (DEGs). The Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses were conducted using the obtained key modules to identify the ICH-related signaling pathways. Network pharmacology technology was applied to forecast the targets of Naoxueshu oral liquid and to establish a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network of overlapping targets between Naoxueshu oral liquid and ICH. Functional annotation and enrichment pathway analyses of the intersectional targets were performed using the omicsbean database. Finally, we verified the therapeutic role and mechanism of Naoxueshu oral liquid in ICH through molecular docking and experiments. RESULTS: Through the WGCNA analysis, combined with network pharmacology, it was found that immune inflammation was closely related to the early pathological mechanism of ICH. Naoxueshu oral liquid suppressed the inflammatory response; hence, it could be a potential drug for ICH treatment. Molecular docking further confirmed that the effective components of Naoxueshu oral liquid docked well with CD163. Finally, the experimental results showed that Naoxueshu oral liquid treatment in the ICH rat model attenuated neurological deficits and neuronal injury, decreased hematoma volume, and promoted hematoma absorption. In addition, Naoxueshu oral liquid treatment also significantly increased the levels of Arg-1, CD163, Nrf2, and HO-1 around hematoma after ICH. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that Naoxueshu oral liquid attenuated neurological deficits and accelerated hematoma absorption, possibly by suppressing inflammatory responses, which might be related to the regulation of Nrf2/CD163/HO-1 that interfered with the activation of M2 microglia, thus accelerating the clearance and decomposition of hemoglobin in the hematoma.

Corneal neovascularization (CNV) is a global threat to human health. Traditional anti-angiogenesis agent may have therapy effect, while the inflammation in disease area remains unsolved. Herein, we reported two binding-induced fibrillogenesis (BIF) peptides as peptidic network antibodies for high-efficient and long-lasting anti-angiogenesis with reduced inflammatory response. BIF peptides could self-assemble into nanoparticles and further perform BIF behavior through binding Ca2+. In vitro, the migration of integrin αvß3 highly expressed endothelial cells was inhibited by BIF peptides. In vivo, one BIF peptide (0.012 mg/Kg) exhibited higher anti-angiogenesis effect than monoclonal antibody bevacizumab (0.96 mg/Kg) in a CNV rabbit model on day 14, despite that the dose of BIF was only 1.3% of bevacizumab. Meanwhile, the inflammatory response, such as PI3 kinase/Akt pathway in CNV was successfully inhibited as well. The peptidic network antibody could block integrin αvß3 via a long-term retention mode, which led to long-term therapeutic effect. The study provides BIF peptides as promising therapeutic agents for both anti-angiogenesis and reduced inflammatory response.

Heavy metals (HMs) and ammonia nitrogen (AN) leaching from electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) result in the contamination of agricultural soils and water bodies. Batch and column leaching tests were conducted to simulate the release of HMs and AN in EMR during precipitation, as well as their migration and transformation in agricultural soils. The results show that Mn, AN, Cd, Ni, and Zn present in the EMR had high acid soluble fraction (un-fixed AN) content, and the leachability of Mn and AN was significantly higher than that of other hazardous elements. The cumulative release of hazardous elements in the EMR stockpile was well-fitted (R2 > 0.95) by the HILL model. Significant HMs and AN accumulated in the agricultural soils after contamination from the EMR leachate. The pollution degree of HMs in agricultural soils was ranked as Mn > Ni > Pb ≈ Zn ≈ Cr > Cd. The acid soluble fraction (un-fixed AN) content of Mn, Ni, Zn, and AN in agricultural soils increased significantly. The risk assessment code shows that the risk level of Mn in agricultural soils changed from medium to high; Ni and Zn in surface soils changed from low to medium. These results indicated that the leaching from EMR would significantly increase the ecological risk of HMs in surrounding agricultural soils, and the large release of AN would pose a great threat to aquatic systems if not properly addressed.

Objective: To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of the Chinese medicine detoxification and dredging collaterals in treating carotid atherosclerosis (CAS). Methods: A systematic and comprehensive search of nine relevant domestic and international databases were conducted from their inception until June 2022. The methodological quality of the included trials was evaluated, and the efficacy and safety were comprehensively analyzed. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria to the randomized controlled trials (RCTs), the research quality evaluation and data extraction were conducted, followed by a meta-analysis of the selected articles. The Cochrane's Bias risk assessment was utilized to evaluate the quality of the evidence. Results: Of the 2,660 studies initially retrieved, 14 studies were included, involving a total of 1,518 patients. The results of the meta-analysis indicated that the clinical efficacy of the Detoxification and Collateral Dredging method in the treatment of CAS was superior to that of western medicine treatment alone, and the difference was statistically significant [RR = 1.23, 95% CI (1.13, 1.34)] Furthermore, carotid intima-media thickness [Mean Difference (MD) = -0.10, 95% CI (-0.13, -0.08)] and Crouse plaque score [MD = -0.54, 95% CI (-0.75, -0.32)] were significantly lower in the Detoxification and Collateral Dredging group compared to the pure western medicine treatment group. The difference was statistically significant. In addition, serum total cholesterol [MD = -0.70, 95% CI (-0.85, -0.55)] and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [MD = -0.70, 95% CI (-0.85, -0.55)] were lower in the Detoxification and Collateral Dredging group than in the Western medicine group, with all differences being statistically significant. Serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was higher in the Detoxification and Collateral Dredging group compared to the pure western medicine group, and the difference was statistically significant [MD = 0.17, 95% CI (0.11, 0.23)]. Conclusion: The use of Chinese medicine Detoxification and Collateral Dredging approach in the treatment of CAS may offer benefits in improving carotid atherosclerotic plaque and reducing blood lipid levels, with a safety profile superior to that of western medicine treatment alone.

To investigate the genetic mechanisms underlying the reproductive traits (time to flowering and maturity) in wheat and identify candidate genes associated, a phenotypic analysis was conducted on 239 wheat accessions (lines) from around the world. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) of wheat heading and maturity phases was performed using the MLM (Q+K) model in the TASSLE software, combined with the Wheat 55K SNP array. The results revealed significant phenotypic variation in heading and maturity among the wheat accessions across different years, with coefficients of variation ranging from 0.96% to 1.97%. The phenotypic data from different years exhibited excellent correlation, with a genome-wide linkage disequilibrium (LD) attenuation distance of 3 Mb. Population structure analysis, evolutionary tree analysis, and principal component analysis indicated that the 239 wheat accessions formed a relatively homogeneous natural population, which could be divided into three subgroups. The GWAS results identified a total of 293 SNP marker loci that were significantly associated with wheat heading and maturity stages (P ≤ 0.001) in different environments. Among them, nine stable SNP marker loci were consistently detected in multiple environments. These marker loci were distributed on wheat chromosomes 1A、1B、2D、3A、5B、6D and 7A. Each individual locus explained 4.03%-16.06% of the phenotypic variation. Furthermore, through careful analysis of the associated loci with large phenotypic effect values and stable inheritance, a total of nine candidate genes related to wheat heading and maturity stages were identified. These findings have implications for molecular marker-assisted selection breeding programs targeting specific wheat traits at the heading and maturity stages. In summary, this study conducted a comprehensive GWAS of wheat heading and maturity phases, revealing significant associations between genetic markers and key developmental stages in wheat. The identification of candidate genes and marker loci provides valuable information for further studies on wheat breeding and genetic improvement targeted at enhancing heading and maturity traits.

AIMS: To investigate the relationship between electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters [J wave, fragmented QRS (fQRS), QTc, the peak-to-end interval of T wave (Tp-Te)], and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in chronic heart failure (CHF). METHODS AND RESULTS: The ECGs of 1570 CHF patients, 572 cases with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and 998 cases with ischaemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) were analysed with the endpoint being an SCD or non-SCD (NSCD). During a median follow-up period of 36 months (0.40-65 months), 438 (27.89%) patients died, of which 158 (35.84%) were SCD. Overall, the occurrence of J wave, fQRS, and long Tp-Te were greater in SCD patients than that of NSCD patients (all P< 0.01). For DCM cases, more SCD patients had J waves observed in the inferior leads than that in the NSCD group (26.78 vs. 13.07%, P<0.001). However, ICM cases with SCD did have more fQRS in the inferior leads than that with NSCD (42.16 vs. 26.67%, P= 0.01). After adjusting for other risk factors, Cox regression analysis revealed that presence of J wave or fQRS in the inferior leads predicted a higher risk for SCD in DCM [hazard ratio (HR), 4.095; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2.132-7.863] and ICM (HR, 2.714; 95% CI, 1.809-4.072) patients. A left ventricular ejection fraction ≤ 30% also predicted SCD and NSCD in DCM and ICM patients. In contrast, the predictive value of QTc and Tp-Te for SCD was not significant. CONCLUSIONS: Presence of J wave or fQRS in the inferior leads predicted higher risk of SCD in DCM and ICM patients and might serve as independent predictors for SCD in patients with CHF.
