OBJECTIVE: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), initially for type 2 diabetes mellitus, show promise in promoting weight loss and improving heart health in obese individuals without diabetes. Our goal was to examine existing research for conclusive evidence on various types of GLP-1 RAs for weight loss and cardiometabolic benefits in obesity without diabetes. METHODS: We conducted an electronic search on PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Central using keywords, such as "GLP-1 RA," "obesity," and "weight loss." We considered all available global GLP-1 RAs for inclusion. Our analysis focused on weight loss, blood pressure (BP) changes (systolic and diastolic BPs), and lipid profile effects (high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, total cholesterol, and triacylglycerol). We used a random-effects meta-analysis with the standardized mean difference (SMD), mean difference (MD), odds ratio, and relative risk to present the results. RESULTS: Our search yielded a total of 7535 articles. We included 15 trials in our study. GLP-1 RAs led to significant weight loss (MD, -8.77 kg; P <.01) in obese individuals. GLP-1 RAs also improved the systolic BP (MD, -4.13 mm Hg; P <.01), diastolic BP (MD, -1.39 mm Hg; P <.01), and lipid profiles, including improved levels of triacylglycerol (SMD, -0.99 mg/dL; P <.01), total cholesterol (SMD, -0.73 mg/dL; P <.01), very low-density lipoprotein (SMD, -1.11 mg/dL; P <.01), and low-density lipoprotein (SMD, -0.27 mg/dL; P <.01), and significantly increased high-density lipoprotein levels (SMD, 0.11 mg/dL; P <.01). However, GLP-1 RAs were associated with an increased risk of gastrointestinal adverse events. CONCLUSION: GLP-1 RAs were found to be beneficial for not only weight loss but also reduction in risk factors for cardiovascular disease such as BP and lipid profile. Consistent beneficial results were observed across the various subtypes of GLP-1 RAs.

OBJECTIVE: One-third of all global suicide deaths occur among adolescents and young adults, making suicide the second leading cause of death among young people. Nearly 80% of suicide deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, and many African nations have higher rates of suicide than global averages. However, interventions are scarce. We conducted a scoping review of counseling interventions for suicide prevention among youth in Africa. METHOD: We performed structured searches of the Medline, Embase, PyscINFO, African Index Medicus, Global Heath Database, and Proquest Dissertations and Theses Global databases. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they described a counseling intervention conducted in Africa, focused on participants under age 22, and included a suicide-related outcome. RESULTS: After removal of duplicates, 1808 titles and abstracts were screened and 10 studies were identified for full-text review. Of these, six included adult participants and did not disaggregate results for youth, two did not describe an intervention, and two did not include a relevant outcome. Thus, no studies were eligible for inclusion. CONCLUSIONS: This empty review highlights the striking absence of published research on a life-threatening public health challenge, representing a distinct call to action for improved efforts in adolescent suicide prevention in Africa.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination is an eminent dilemma that jeopardizes global food safety and security, especially through its phytotoxicity in rice; one of the most edible crops. Melatonin (MET) has emerged as a protective phytohormone in stress conditions, but the defensive role and underlying mechanisms of MET against Cd toxicity in rice still remain unclear. To fulfill this knowledge gap, the present study is to uncover the key mechanisms for MET-mediated Cd-stress tolerance in rice. Cd toxicity significantly reduced growth by hindering the process of photosynthesis, cellular redox homeostasis, phytohormonal imbalance, and ultrastructural damages. Contrarily, MET supplementation considerably improved growth attributes, photosynthetic efficiency, and cellular ultrastructure as measured by gas exchange elements, chlorophyll content, reduced Cd accumulation, and ultrastructural analysis via transmission electron microscopy (TEM). MET treatment significantly reduced Cd accumulation (39.25%/31.58%), MDA (25.87%/19.45%), H2O2 (17.93%/9.56%), and O2 (29.11%/27.14%) levels in shoot/root tissues, respectively, when compared with Cd treatment. More importantly, MET manifested association with stress responsive phytohormones (ABA and IAA) and boosted the defense mechanisms of plant by enhancing the activities of ROS-scavenging antioxidant enzymes (SOD; superoxide dismutase, POD; peroxidase, CAT; catalase, APX; ascorbate peroxidase) and as well as regulating the key stress-responsive genes (OsSOD1, OsPOD1, OsCAT2, OsAPX1), thereby reinstate cellular membrane integrity and confer tolerance to ultrastructural damages under Cd-induced phytotoxicity. Overall, our findings emphasized the potential of MET as a long-term and cost-effective approach to Cd remediation in paddy soils, which can pave the way for a healthier and more environmentally conscious agricultural sector.

Objective: The green synthesis method for nanoparticles is getting more attention globally, due to its lesser cost, non-hazardous, and eco-friendly nature. The novelty of the present work is to investigate the anti-bacterial and degradation activity of the green synthesized Iron Oxide NPs. Methods: In this study, the Iron Oxide NPs were synthesized through a green synthesis route from leaves of Ficus Palmata. UV-Vis confirmed Iron Oxide NP's peaks between (230-290 nm), while Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy analysis showed that several groups were involved in reduction and stabilization. Results: Results indicated that the highest photo thermal activity was shown in light and it was almost 4 folds greater than the control. Similarly, Iron Oxide NPs showed excellent antimicrobial potential against bacterial species "Salmonella typhi" "Xanthomonas Oryzae" and "Lactobacillus" at low concentrations (150 µg/mL). Hemolytic assay results showed that the toxicity was lesser than 5% at both dark and light conditions. Moreover, we also evaluated the photo-catalytic potential of Iron Oxide NPs against methylene orange. Results indicated that almost complete degradation was noted after 90 min in the presence of continuous light. All tests were performed in triplicates. All the data was subjected to P-test (P < 0.5) using Excel and graph pad (V.5.0). Conclusion: Iron Oxide NPs holds a promising future and could be used in treating diseases, and microbial pathogenesis and also could be used as a vector in drug delivery. Moreover, they can also eradicate persistent dyes and could be used as an alternative to remediate pollutants from the environment.
