RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The therapeutic structure of occupational therapy (OT) includes groups. Although the presence of others is expected to be relaxing due to the social buffering effect and the tend and befriend theory, it has not been sufficiently validated in accordance with the therapeutic structure of OT. The aim of this study was to investigate the electrophysiological evidence for the effectiveness of parallel groups and states of concentration on craft activities used in OT. METHODS: Thirty healthy young adults were used as controls to measure EEG and autonomic activity during craft activities in three conditions: alone, parallel, and nonparallel. EEG was analyzed using exact low-resolution electromagnetic tomography, and autonomic activity was analyzed using Lorenz plot analysis. RESULTS: Parasympathetic activity was significantly higher in the parallel condition than in the alone condition. A significant negative correlation was found between current source density and parasympathetic activity in the region centered on the right insular cortex in the α1 band, and functional connectivity in regions including the anterior cingulate cortex and insular cortex was associated with autonomic activity. CONCLUSION: Craft activities that occurred during frontal midline theta rhythm also increased parasympathetic activity. The results suggest that the parallel groups used in OT and the intensive state of craft activities induce a social buffering effect that increases parasympathetic activity despite the absence of physical contact or social support. This provides evidence for the effectiveness of the therapeutic structure of occupational activities and groups in OT.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: It is critical to develop accurate and universally available biomarkers for dementia diseases to appropriately deal with the dementia problems under world-wide rapid increasing of patients with dementia. In this sense, electroencephalography (EEG) has been utilized as a promising examination to screen and assist in diagnosing dementia, with advantages of sensitiveness to neural functions, inexpensiveness, and high availability. Moreover, the algorithm-based deep learning can expand EEG applicability, yielding accurate and automatic classification easily applied even in general hospitals without any research specialist. METHODS: We utilized a novel deep neural network, with which high accuracy of discrimination was archived in neurological disorders in the previous study. Based on this network, we analyzed EEG data of healthy volunteers (HVs, N = 55), patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD, N = 101), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB, N = 75), and idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH, N = 60) to evaluate the discriminative accuracy of these diseases. RESULTS: High discriminative accuracies were archived between HV and patients with dementia, yielding 81.7% (vs. AD), 93.9% (vs. DLB), 93.1% (vs. iNPH), and 87.7% (vs. AD, DLB, and iNPH). CONCLUSION: This study revealed that the EEG data of patients with dementia were successfully discriminated from HVs based on a novel deep learning algorithm, which could be useful for automatic screening and assisting diagnosis of dementia diseases.

RESUMO

The purpose of this scoping review is to provide updated information on the neural basis and neurophysiological features associated with unilateral spatial neglect (USN) recovery. We applied the Preferred Reporting Systems for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) framework and identified 16 relevant papers from the databases. Critical appraisal was performed by two independent reviewers using a standardized appraisal instrument developed by the PRISMA-ScR. We identified and categorized investigation methods for the neural basis and neurophysiological features of USN recovery after stroke using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional MRI, and electroencephalography (EEG). This review found two brain-level mechanisms underlying USN recovery at the behavioral level. These include the absence of stroke-related damage to the right ventral attention network during the acute phase and compensatory recruitment of analogous areas of the undamaged opposite hemisphere and prefrontal cortex during visual search tasks in the subacute or later phases. However, the relationship between the neural and neurophysiological findings and improvements in USN-related activities of daily living remains unknown. This review adds to the growing body of evidence regarding the neural mechanisms underlying USN recovery.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To clarify the pathophysiology of psychoses after the new administration of antiepileptic drugs (AED), we analyzed the annual incidence, timing of development, and duration of episodes. METHODS: Psychotic outcomes in the first 6-month period after an AED or non-AED administration in patients with focal epilepsy were exhaustively reviewed in eight Japanese neuropsychiatry institutions. In cases with psychotic episodes, the subtype of psychosis, timing of development, previous history of psychosis, and duration of the episode were evaluated. RESULTS: Between 1981 and 2015, 5018 new drugs (4402 AED and 616 non-AED) were administered to 2067 patients with focal epilepsy. In the first 6-month period, 105 psychotic episodes occurred (81 interictal psychosis [IIP] and 24 postictal psychosis). Furthermore, 55 cases were first episodes and 50 were recurrent episodes. The frequency of psychoses is significantly higher after AED administration (n = 102) compared with non-AED administration (n = 3). Psychosis occurred most frequently in the initial 1-month period after new-AED administration and tended to decrease with increasing time. The estimated annual incidence of all psychoses after a new AED administration was 3.5% (2.0% for first-episode psychosis and 1.8% for first-episode IIP). Duration of psychoses (mean, 38.5 weeks) was equivalent to overall IIP. Duration of IIP did not shorten with discontinuation of newly administered AED. SIGNIFICANCE: Patients with epilepsy exhibit psychosis more frequently after new AED administration than after non-AED administration. This study shows the pathophysiology of psychoses after AED administration with annual incidence, the timing of development, and the duration of PAP, which have rarely been reported.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunction is a persistent residual symptom in major depressive disorders (MDDs) that hinders social and occupational recovery. Cognitive inflexibility is a typical cognitive dysfunction in MDD and refers to difficulty in switching tasks, which requires two subcomponents: forgetting an old task and adapting to a new one. Here, we aimed to disentangle the subcomponents of cognitive inflexibility in MDD and investigate whether they can be improved by transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on the prefrontal cortex. METHODS: The current study included 20 patients with MDD (seven females) and 22 age-matched healthy controls (HCs) (seven females). The participants received anodal tDCS on either the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (DMPFC) or dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in a crossover design. Before and after the application of tDCS, the participants performed a modified Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, in which the task-switching rules were explicitly described and proactive interference from a previous task rule was occasionally released. RESULTS: We found that the behavioral cost of a task switch was increased in patients with MDD, but that of proactive interference was comparable between patients with MDD and HCs. The response time for anodal DMPFC tDCS was decreased compared with that for anodal tDCS on the DLPFC in MDD. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that cognitive inflexibility in MDD is primarily explained by the difficulty to adapt to a new task and environment, and that tDCS on the DMPFC improves behavioral performance during cognitively demanding tasks that require conflict resolution.

RESUMO

To prevent cognitive decline, non-pharmacological therapies such as reminiscence for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are required, however, the use of nursing homes was limited due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Therefore, the demand for remote-care is increasing. We hypothesized that immersive virtual reality (iVR) could be used more effectively than conventional reminiscence for anxiety. We first examined the effectiveness and safety of reminiscence using iVR (iVR reminiscence session) in patients with MCI. After COVID-19 imposed restriction on visiting nursing homes, we conducted online iVR reminiscence session (remote iVR reminiscence session) and compared its effectiveness with that of interpersonal iVR reminiscence session (face-to-face iVR reminiscence session). The results of two elderly with MCI suggested that iVR reminiscence could reduce anxiety and the burden of care without serious side effects. The effects of remote iVR reminiscence might be almost as effective as those of face-to-face one.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Various types of therapy, including occupational therapy, are utilised for the treatment of moderate to severe dementia. In order to determine the optimal rehabilitation strategy for such patients and examine the treatment efficacy, an assessment scale for engagement in various group activities that can be easily applied in clinical situations is required. We herein report the development of the Assessment Scale for Engagement in Activities (ASEA) and its clinical utility. METHODS: The ASEA was developed by nine occupational therapists and a psychiatrist with experience in developing measures for dementia, in accordance with the COSMIN (COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments) checklist. This assessment comprises 10 items covering four domains: Engagement in the Activity, Interaction, Arousal, and Affect. Participants with moderate to severe dementia who resided in a psychiatric acute phase hospital in Japan were assessed in terms of engagement in activities using the ASEA and Todai-shiki Observational Rating Scale (TORS), and in terms of cognitive function using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). We examined the internal consistency, inter- and intra-rater reliability, content validity, and concurrent validity of the ASEA. RESULTS: Cronbach's alpha of the ASEA was 0.889. The overall inter-rater reliability was 0.937 (Spearman rank correlation, P < 0.001), and the intraclass correlation (ICC) for each item was 0.490-0.965 (P < 0.018-0.001). The overall test-retest reliability was 0.778 (Spearman's rank correlation, P < 0.001), and the ICC for each item was 0.498-0.863 (P < 0.023-0.001). The test-retest correlations were significant for almost all items, aside from 'Interaction with others' (P = 0.051). The concurrent validity, examined using the TORS and MMSE, was 0.920 and 0.304 (Spearman's rank correlation, P < 0.001-0.006). CONCLUSIONS: The ASEA has confirmed reliability and validity, aside from 'Interaction with others' regarding test-retest reliability. Generally, this assessment tool has clinical utility and allows the evaluation of activity engagement among patients with moderate to severe dementia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although rehabilitation is recommended for terminal cancer patients, the specific components and methods of such programs are poorly documented. No studies to date have examined the effectiveness of rehabilitation for terminal cancer patients. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of a new intervention for rehabilitation therapists, using the Op-reha Guide (Guide to Optimal and Patient-Centred Rehabilitation Practice for Patients in Palliative Care Units [PCUs]) in rehabilitation practice. This guide consists of recommended actions and attitudes for rehabilitation therapists and aims to optimise therapists' actions according to the patient's needs and condition. It shares goals with terminal cancer patients to maintain their activities of daily living (ADL). METHODS: This study uses a multicentre, prospective, randomised controlled trial (RCT) design with two parallel groups in PCUs where specialised rehabilitation will be routinely performed for terminal cancer patients by rehabilitation therapists. Participants will be randomised (1:1) to intervention (the Op-reha Guide) and control groups (usual rehabilitation). We will then conduct an observational study in PCUs that do not perform specialised rehabilitation for terminal cancer patients; this will be considered the usual care group, and the efficacy of usual rehabilitation will be quantitatively evaluated. Inclusion criteria are hospitalisation in PCU, European Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status of 2 or 3, and clinical estimation of life expectancy of 3 weeks or more. Patients with severe symptom burden will be excluded. We hypothesise that the Op-reha Guide will be more effective in maintaining the ADL of terminal cancer patients hospitalised in PCUs than usual rehabilitation. The primary endpoint is defined as the change in (total) modified Barthel Index from baseline to Day 22. Quality of life will be a secondary endpoint. In total, 135 patients will be recruited from 16 Japanese sites between July 2019 and December 2021. DISCUSSION: This will be the first trial to evaluate the efficacy of specialised rehabilitation for terminal cancer patients hospitalised in PCUs, and will contribute to the evidence on the efficacy of implementing rehabilitation for terminal cancer patients. RESUMO

[Purpose] Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibit many problematic mealtime behaviours. Currently, there is no process for measuring the mealtime behaviours of children with ASD in Japan. Therefore, we developed the ASD-Mealtime Behaviour Questionnaire (ASD-MBQ) using the results of surveys measuring problematic mealtime behaviours in Japanese children with ASD aged 3-18 years. The objective of this study was to analyse the structural validity of the ASD-MBQ in Japan. [Participants and Methods] We recruited 378 children with ASD aged 3-18 years and performed a confirmatory factor analysis on the ASD-MBQ by using a five-factor structure. [Results] The confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated structural validity (χ2=796.5, degrees of freedom=265, comparative fit index=0.901, root mean square error of approximation [90% confidence interval]=0.073 [0.067-0.079]). [Conclusion] We have demonstrated the structural validity of the ASD-MBQ, which provided useful information for planning interventions and evaluations for children with ASD. Further studies need to consider cut-off score by age and inter-rater reliability.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: eLORETA (exact low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography) is a technique created by Pascual-Marqui et al. [Int J Psychophysiol. 1994 Oct; 18(1): 49-65] for the 3-dimensional representation of current source density in the brain by electroencephalography (EEG) data. Kurtosis analysis allows for the identification of spiky activity in the brain. In this study, we focused on the evaluation of the reliability of eLORETA kurtosis analysis. For this purpose, the results of eLORETA kurtosis source localization of paroxysmal activity in EEG were compared with those of eLORETA current source density (CSD) analysis of EEG data in 3 epilepsy patients with partial seizures. METHODS: EEG was measured using a digital EEG system with 19 channels. We set the bandpass filter at traditional frequency band settings (1-4, 4-8, 8-15, 15-30, and 30-60 Hz) and 5-10 and 20-70 Hz and performed eLORETA kurtosis to compare the source localization of paroxysmal activity with that of visual interpretation of EEG data and CSD analysis of eLORETA in focal epilepsy patients. RESULTS: The eLORETA kurtosis analysis of EEG data preprocessed by bandpass filtering from 20 to 70 Hz and traditional frequency band settings did not show any discrete paroxysmal source activity compatible with the results of CSD analysis of eLORETA. In all 3 cases, eLORETA kurtosis analysis filtered at 5-10 Hz showed paroxysmal activities in the theta band, which were all consistent with the visual inspection results and the CSD analysis results. DISCUSSION: Our findings suggested that eLORETA kurtosis analysis of EEG data might be useful for the identification of spiky paroxysmal activity sources in epilepsy patients. Since EEG is widely used in the clinical practice of epilepsy, eLORETA kurtosis analysis is a promising method that can be applied to epileptic activity mapping.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is characterized by progressive cognitive decline, fluctuating cognition, visual hallucinations, rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, and parkinsonism. DLB is the second most common type of degenerative dementia of all dementia cases. However, DLB, particularly in the early stage, is underdiagnosed and sometimes misdiagnosed with other types of dementia. Thus, it is of great interest investigating neurophysiological markers of DLB. METHOD: We introduced exact low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (eLORETA)-independent component analysis (ICA) to assess activities of 5 electroencephalography (EEG) resting-state networks (RSNs) in 41 drug-free DLB patients. RESULTS: Compared to 80 healthy controls, DLB patients had significantly decreased activities in occipital visual and sensorimotor networks, where DLB patients and healthy controls showed no age dependences in all EEG-RSN activities. Also, we found correlations between all EEG-RSN activities and DLB symptoms. Specifically, decreased occipital α activity showed correlations with worse brain functions related to attention/concentration, visuospatial discrimination, and global cognition. Enhanced visual perception network activity correlated with milder levels of depression and anxiety. Enhanced self-referential network activity correlated with milder levels of depression. Enhanced memory perception network activity correlated with better semantic memory, visuospatial discrimination function, and global cognitive function as well as with severer visual hallucination. In addition, decreased sensorimotor network activity correlated with a better semantic memory. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that eLORETA-ICA can detect EEG-RSN activity alterations in DLB related to symptoms. Therefore, eLORETA-ICA with EEG data can be a useful noninvasive tool for sensitive detection of EEG-RSN activity changes characteristic of DLB and for understanding the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying this disease.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Many studies show psychoses after some antiepileptic drug (AED) administrations (post-AED administration psychoses [PAP]). It remains uncertain about psychogenetic potential of each AED and effects of clinical state factors on PAP. We examined the relations between AED-related factors (types, generations, dosages, and concomitant AED) and PAP. METHODS: The clinical records of patients with focal epilepsy were retrospectively reviewed from eight adult epilepsy clinics, for every six-month period after administration of a new drug (either AED or non-AED) between 1981 and 2015. Characteristics of psychotic episodes, AED-related factors (type, daily dosage, and concomitant AED), and other state-related risk factors to psychosis (age, duration of epilepsy, history of psychosis, and seizure frequency) were examined. Psychogenetic risks of AED-related and state-related factors were analyzed with multifactorial procedures. RESULTS: Of 2067 patients with focal epilepsy, 5018 new drugs (4402 AEDs and 616 non-AEDs) were administered. Within the first six-month period, 89 patients exhibited 105 psychotic episodes (81 interictal and 24 postictal psychoses: 55 first episodes and 50 recurrences). With second-generation AED (SAED) administration, particularly topiramate and lamotrigine, frequency of psychosis was significantly increased. Daily dosage of AED was not significantly associated with psychosis. Psychosis tended to occur with a higher number of concomitant AED. Subsequent analysis with AED-related and general factors showed that SAED administrations and previous psychotic history were the most significant risks for PAP. CONCLUSION: Post-AED administration psychoses is associated with type of AED (SAED), rather than its dosage. Individual vulnerabilities are also associated with PAP.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The electroencephalography (EEG) abnormalities found in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) are conflicting. In this study, we used magnetoencephalography, which has higher spatial resolution than electroencephalography, to explore neurophysiological features of DLB that may aid in the differential diagnosis. METHODS: Six patients with DLB, 11 patients with Alzheimer's disease, and 11 age-matched normal subjects were recruited. We investigated alterations in the ratio of event-related synchronization (ERS) in the alpha band after eye-closing. RESULTS: Although the averaged ratio change of alpha ERS after eye-closing appeared predominantly in the posterior brain regions in all study groups, DLB patients had the weakest ratio change of alpha ERS. In particular, DLB patients exhibited a significantly reduced ratio change of alpha ERS in the bilateral inferior temporal gyrus, right occipital pole, and left parieto-occipital cortex compared to Alzheimer's disease patients or normal controls. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicated that a reduced ratio change of alpha ERS in the posterior brain regions elicited by eye-closing is a brain electromagnetic feature of DLB.

RESUMO

Healthy aging is associated with impairment in cognitive information processing. Several neuroimaging methods such as functional magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography and near-infrared spectroscopy have been used to explore healthy and pathological aging by relying on hemodynamic or metabolic changes that occur in response to brain activity. Since electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) are able to measure neural activity directly with a high temporal resolution of milliseconds, these neurophysiological techniques are particularly important to investigate the dynamics of brain activity underlying neurocognitive aging. It is well known that age is a major risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), and that synaptic dysfunction represents an early sign of this disease associated with hallmark neuropathological findings. However, the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying AD are not fully elucidated. This review addresses healthy and pathological brain aging from a neurophysiological perspective, focusing on oscillatory activity changes during the resting state, event-related potentials and stimulus-induced oscillatory responses during cognitive or motor tasks, functional connectivity between brain regions, and changes in signal complexity. We also highlight the accumulating evidence on age-related EEG/MEG changes and biological markers of brain neurodegeneration, including genetic factors, structural abnormalities on magnetic resonance images, and the biochemical changes associated with Aß deposition and tau pathology.

RESUMO

Emotion regulation is the process that adjusts the type or amount of emotion when we experience an emotional situation. The aim of this study was to reveal quantitative changes in brain activity during emotional information processing related to psychosomatic states and to determine electrophysiological features of neuroticism. Twenty-two healthy subjects (mean age 25 years, 14 males and 8 females) were registered. Electroencephalography (EEG) was measured during an emotional audiovisual memory task under three conditions (neutral, pleasant and unpleasant sessions). We divided the subjects into two groups using the Cornell Medical Index (CMI): (CMI-I: control group, n = 10: CMI-II, III or IV: neuroticism group, n = 12). We analyzed the digital EEG data using exact low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (eLORETA) current source density (CSD) and functional connectivity analysis in several frequency bands (δ, θ, α, ß, γ and whole band). In all subjects, bilateral frontal α CSD in the unpleasant session increased compared to the pleasant session, especially in the control group (p < 0.05). CSD of the neuroticism group was significantly higher than that of the control group in the full band at the amygdala and inferior temporal gyrus, and in the α band at the right temporal lobe (p < 0.05). Additionally, we found an increase in functional connectivity between the left insular cortex and right superior temporal gyrus in all subjects during the unpleasant session compared to the pleasant session (p < 0.05). In this study, using EEG analysis, we could find a novel cortical network related to brain mechanisms underlying emotion regulation. Overall findings indicate that it is possible to characterize neuroticism electrophysiologically, which may serve as a neurophysiological marker of this personality trait. © 2015 S. RESUMO

Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNESs) in patients with epilepsy can be categorized as dissociative disorders. The prevalence of PNESs in patients with epilepsy appears to be much higher than that of dissociative experiences in nonclinical subjects. In order to clarify as to whether epilepsy-related factors were associated with pathological dissociation, we conducted a controlled study with 225 patients with epilepsy and 334 nonclinically matched individuals. All participants completed the Japanese version of the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES). There was no significant difference in the DES score (DES-S) between the group with epilepsy and the control group. The group with epilepsy showed a significantly higher DES taxon (DES-T; a subset of DES-S and an index of pathological dissociation) than the control group. Thirty-one out of the 225 patients with epilepsy (13.8%) had PNESs. Because of its strong association with the DES-S and DES-T, PNESs can be regarded as a symptom of dissociation. With multiple regression analysis, the patients with a shorter duration of epilepsy, higher seizure frequency, or shorter period in education tend to suffer from pathological dissociation. These findings demonstrate that patients with epilepsy are more prone to experiencing pathological dissociation when having certain clinical factors.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic normal-pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a neuropsychiatric syndrome characterized by the clinical triad of gait disturbance, urinary dysfunction, and cognitive impairment. The aim of the present study was to find specific EEG patterns associated with shunt response in iNPH. METHODS: Twenty five iNPH patients (10 shunt responders and 15 non-responders) were enrolled in this study. We performed current source density (CSD) analysis in several frequency bands (delta: 2-4 Hz, theta: 4-8 Hz, alpha: 8-13 Hz, beta: 13-30 Hz, gamma: 30-60 Hz) using exact Low Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomography (eLORETA). CSD distribution was compared between shunt responders and non-responders for each frequency band before and after CSF tap test. RESULTS: Shunt responders showed increased gamma CSD in the left temporal cortex before CSF tapping relative to non-responders. However, after CSF tapping, shunt response was associated with significantly higher CSDs in several frequency bands, specifically theta, alpha, beta and gamma, involving mainly the frontal and temporal areas. Using eLORETA analysis, we were able to identify cortical oscillatory activity before and after CSF tap test related to clinical recovery due to shunt operation in iNPH. CONCLUSION: Our findings support and extend the results of previous studies examining the effects of CSF tap test and shunt operation in patients with iNPH, possibly indicating electrophysiological features of shunt response in this disease. These findings warrant future studies to use EEG for prediction of shunt response in iNPH.

RESUMO

Objective. Neurophysiological tools remain indispensable instruments in the assessment of psychiatric disorders. These techniques are widely available, inexpensive and well tolerated, providing access to the assessment of brain functional alterations. In the clinical psychiatric context, electrophysiological techniques are required to provide important information on brain function. While there is an immediate benefit in the clinical application of these techniques in the daily routine (emergency assessments, exclusion of organic brain alterations), these tools are also useful in monitoring the progress of psychiatric disorders or the effects of therapy. There is increasing evidence and convincing literature to confirm that electroencephalography and related techniques can contribute to the diagnostic workup, to the identification of subgroups of disease categories, to the assessment of long-term causes and to facilitate response predictions. Methods and Results. In this report we focus on 3 different novel developments of the use of neurophysiological techniques in 3 highly prevalent psychiatric disorders: (1) the value of EEG recordings and machine learning analyses (deep learning) in order to improve the diagnosis of dementia subtypes; (2) the use of mismatch negativity in the early diagnosis of schizophrenia; and (3) the monitoring of addiction and the prevention of relapse using cognitive event-related potentials. Empirical evidence was presented. Conclusion. Such information emphasized the important role of neurophysiological tools in the identification of useful biological markers leading to a more efficient care management. The potential of the implementation of machine learning approaches together with the conduction of large cross-sectional and longitudinal studies was also discussed.

RESUMO

Aim: Narratives are important in psychiatric rehabilitation. People with a psychiatric diagnosis find it difficult to recall specific autobiographical memories of events that lasted less than a day. Although personal narratives play a central role in personal recovery, the factors influencing personal and clinical recovery, such as psychiatric symptoms and cognitive function, have not been fully explored. Therefore, this study examined the associations between personal recovery and autobiographical memory, age, psychiatric symptoms, and neurocognitive function. Method: The Self-Identified Stage of Recovery, Parts A and B (SISR-A, SISR-B), Autobiographical Memory Test (AMT), Japanese version of the Brief Assessment Scale of Schizophrenia Cognitive Function, and Brief Psychiatric Symptom Rating Scale were administered to 40 individuals with psychiatric disorders who were undergoing psychiatric rehabilitation. Results: A significant positive correlation was found between the total number of specific memories in the AMT and total SISR-B scores. A binary logistic regression analysis revealed that the total number of specific memories, especially high responsiveness to negative cue words, significantly predicted greater personal recovery. Age, psychiatric symptoms, and neurocognitive function did not significantly predict higher personal recovery. Conclusion: In psychiatric rehabilitation, negative episodes should be treated with caution; however, they may also facilitate personal recovery.
