The present study attempted to test the applicability of using phytoplankton as a bioindicator for assessing water quality along the Eastern Alexandria coast, Egypt. Eight stations were selected to cover the different characteristics of seawater during the summer 2022. Six algal groups were detected in different ratios: Bacillariophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Dinophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Silicoflagellata, and Euglenophyceae. Phytoplankton abundance was found highest at the Port Said (PS) beach, and the lowest abundance was detected at Ras El Bar (RB) beach. According to the evaluation of phytoplankton abundance, all the studied stations are oligotrophic state except PS was eutrophic. Based on Chl a concentration, the selected stations could be described as good-bad from west to east. The Shannon diversity and Pielou evenness indexes classified the studied stations as being moderate pollution except for PS and RB stations. The existence of organic pollution indicators species like Navicula, Synedra, and Euglena is a warning indication of the declining water quality especially in B and M stations. The biochemical compositions of the collected phytoplankton were spatial fluctuated. Protein and carbohydrates were the dominant macromolecules in the phytoplankton community compared with lipids. These macromolecules are used to assess trophic states whereas the ratio between protein and carbohydrate > 1 represents a healthy coast as observed in some stations. Thus, phytoplankton should be considered a bioindicator within Water Framework Directive monitoring programs for the Mediterranean Sea. For the long-term monitoring of the Mediterranean Sea's ecosystem, it is recommended that the macromolecules of phytoplankton should be determined.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Electronic health record (EHR)-based research allows the capture of large amounts of data, which is necessary in NAFLD, where the risk of clinical liver outcomes is generally low. The lack of consensus on which International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes should be used as exposures and outcomes limits comparability and generalizability of results across studies. We aimed to establish consensus among a panel of experts on ICD codes that could become the reference standard and provide guidance around common methodological issues. APPROACH AND RESULTS: Researchers with an interest in EHR-based NAFLD research were invited to collectively define which administrative codes are most appropriate for documenting exposures and outcomes. We used a modified Delphi approach to reach consensus on several commonly encountered methodological challenges in the field. After two rounds of revision, a high level of agreement (>67%) was reached on all items considered. Full consensus was achieved on a comprehensive list of administrative codes to be considered for inclusion and exclusion criteria in defining exposures and outcomes in EHR-based NAFLD research. We also provide suggestions on how to approach commonly encountered methodological issues and identify areas for future research. CONCLUSIONS: This expert panel consensus statement can help harmonize and improve generalizability of EHR-based NAFLD research.

BACKGROUND: Obesity and diabetes are two chronic metabolic diseases whose prevalence is increasing at an alarming rate globally. A close association between obesity, diabetes, and insulin resistance has been identified, and many studies have pinpointed obesity as a causal risk factor for insulin resistance. However, the mechanism underlying this association is not entirely understood. In the past decade, ceramides have gained attention due to their accumulation in certain tissues and their suggested role in initiating insulin resistance. This study aims to determine the association of specific ceramides and their major metabolizing enzymes with obesity-associated insulin resistance. METHODS: The samples comprised subcutaneous adipose tissues collected from three cohorts: lean non-diabetic (controls; n = 20), obese-non-diabetic (n = 66), and obese-diabetic (n = 32). Ceramide levels were quantified using LC-MS/MS and mRNA expression level for different enzymes were estimated using real-time PCR-based RNA expression analysis. RESULTS: C16-ceramide (P = 0.023), C16-dihydro-ceramide (P < 0.005), C18-dihydro-ceramide (P = 0.009) and C24-ceramide (P = 0.040) levels were significantly increased in the obese cohort compared to the control group. However, stratification of the obese group revealed a significant increase in the C16-ceramide levels (P = 0.027) and mRNA over expression of the serine palmitoyl transferases enzyme subunit SPT1 (P < 0.005) in the obese-diabetic cohort compared to the obese-non-diabetic cohort. CONCLUSIONS: The present study indicates that C16-ceramide plays a pivotal role in inducing insulin resistance. Overexpression of SPT1 in the obese-diabetic group and its positive correlation with C16-ceramide suggest that C16-ceramide was generated through the de novo pathway.

RESUMO

This review proposes a new bioremediation method based on the diverse functionalities of algae. A greenway for cleansing wastewater is more ecologically friendly and environmentally sustainable than prior methods with other bacteria. New bioremediation technology employing algae and cyanobacteria for the removal of a wide range of organic contaminants is reasonable and has great potential. The prevalence of organic contaminants in aquatic habitats may endanger the health and well-being of several marine creatures. Agriculture, industry, and household trash are just a few of the human-caused sources of organic pollutants that contaminate waterways around the world. Before wastewater can be released into waterways, it must be cleaned. Algae-based wastewater treatment systems are becoming increasingly popular because of their environmental sustainability and lack of secondary pollutants. According to the kind of pollutant, the physicochemical properties of wastewater, and the algal species, algae and cyanobacteria can absorb and accumulate a wide spectrum of organic pollutants at different rates. In addition, phytoremediation is a cost-effective alternative to conventional treatments for degrading organic contaminants. Phycoremediationally produced algal biomass may also be an important part of the bioenergy value chain. This article focuses on microalgae and cyanobacteria species, which may remove many organic contaminants from water systems.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver malignancy that is strongly associated with chronic liver disease. Isolated hepatic tuberculosis is an uncommon type of tuberculosis. Concomitant occurrence of both conditions is extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 47-year-old man who presented with fever and abdominal pain for 3 months prior to presentation. He reported a history of anorexia and significant weight loss. Abdominal examination revealed a tender, enlarged liver. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a solid heterogeneous hepatic mass with peripheral arterial enhancement, but no venous washout, conferring a radiological impression of suspected cholangiocarcinoma. However, a CT-guided biopsy of the lesion resulted in the diagnosis of concomitant HCC and isolated hepatic tuberculosis. CONCLUSION: A rapid increase in tumor size should draw attention to the possibility of a concomitant infectious process. Clinicians must have a high index of suspicion for tuberculosis, especially in patients from endemic areas, in order to initiate early and proper treatment.

Different polysaccharide extracts (crude polysaccharide, fucoidan and alginate) from Sargassum linifolium and Stypopodium schimperi were examined as inhibitors of the carbon steel anodic dissolution process in 8 M phosphoric acid. The anode potential and limiting current relationship was measured and compared for gradually increasing algae extract concentrations (from 20 to 350 ppm). The limiting current decreases while inhibition efficiency (%) increases as the concentrations of all these extracts increase. Fucoidan from S. linifolium is considered to have the most retardation effect. The extracts' retardation mechanism is depending on the adsorption process at the steel metal, which was proved by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, SEM shows that high concentration (350 ppm) of Stypopodium schimperi crude polysaccharide, Sargassum linifolium fucoidan and Stypopodium schimperi alginate extracts have promising effect on the surface texture. The data of Langmuir and the kinetic-thermodynamic isotherms were determined to clarify the nature of adsorption of extract on the metal-solution interface. The activation energy and activation parameters (changes in enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs free energy) were determined and gave indication for strong interaction between the inhibitor and the steel surface. The extract features were investigated via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The polysaccharides from the brown algae, especially fucoidan, manifest potential as a natural electro-polishing blue inhibitor. Surface morphology study confirmed that addition of algae extract to a steel dissolution bath enhanced the surface appearance and its texture quality to great extent.

Red Seaweed "Rhodophyta" are an important group of macroalgae that include approximately 7000 species. They are a rich source of structurally diverse bioactive constituents, including protein, sulfated polysaccharides, pigments, polyunsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and phenolic compounds with nutritional, medical, and industrial importance. Polysaccharides are the main components in the cell wall of red algae and represent about 40-50% of the dry weight, which are extensively utilized in industry and pharmaceutical compounds, due to their thickening and gelling properties. The hydrocolloids galactans carrageenans and agars are the main red seaweed cell wall polysaccharides, which had broad-spectrum therapeutic characters. Generally, the chemical contents of seaweed are different according to the algal species, growth stage, environment, and external conditions, e.g., the temperature of the water, light intensity, nutrient concentrations in the ecosystem. Economically, they can be recommended as a substitute source for natural ingredients that contribute to a broad range of bioactivities like cancer therapy, anti-inflammatory agents, and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory. This review touches on the main points of the pharmaceutical applications of red seaweed, as well as the exploitation of their specific compounds and secondary metabolites with vital roles.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. More than 120 genes have been shown to be associated with obesity related phenotypes. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of selected genetic polymorphisms in Uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) and Niemann-Pick C1 (NPC1) genes in an obese population in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: The genotypes of rs1800592, rs10011540 and rs3811791 (UCP1 gene) and rs1805081 and rs1805082 (NPC1 gene) were determined in a total of 492 subjects using TaqMan chemistry by Real-time PCR. In addition, capillary sequencing assay was performed to identify two specific polymorphisms viz., rs45539933 (exon 2) and rs2270565 (exon 5) of UCP1 gene. RESULTS: A significant association of UCP1 polymorphisms rs1800592 [OR, 1.52 (1.10-2.08); p = 0.009] was observed in the obese cohort after adjusting with age, sex and type 2 diabetes. Further BMI based stratification revealed that this association was inconsistent with both moderate and extreme obese cohort. A significant association of UCP1 polymorphisms rs3811791 was observed only in the moderate-obese cohort [OR = 2.89 (1.33-6.25); p = 0.007] but not in the extreme-obese cohort indicating an overlying genetic complexity between moderate-obesity and extreme-obesity. The risk allele frequencies, which were higher in moderate-obese cohort, had abnormal HDL, LDL and triglyceride levels. CONCLUSION: The rs1800592 and rs3811791 of UCP1 gene are associated with obesity in general and in the moderate-obese group in particular. The associated UCP1 polymorphisms in the moderate-obese group may regulate the impaired energy metabolism which plays a significant role in the initial stages of obesity.

Photobacterium damselae species are one of the most devastating bacterial pathogens in mariculture worldwide. Some species of Photobacterium are pathogenic for marine animals and human. They are the causative agents of photobacteriosis, formerly known as pasteurellosis. A total of (202) marine fishes of three different species were represented as: seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), seabream (Sparus aurata) and gray mullet (Mugil capitus) randomly collected from Lake Temsah at Ismailia governorate along the parallel Pelagic road to the lake in the governorate from August 2015 to July 2016. The clinical picture and gross lesions of the diseased fishes were recorded. Isolation and identification of suspected bacteria using traditional and molecular methods. Samples from affected organs were collected for studying the histopathological alterations of these pathogens. Fifty one fishes were found to be infected with Photobacterium damselae subsp. Piscicida. Seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) was the most infected fish species (23), followed by seabream (Sparus aurata) (18) finally gray mullet (Mugil capitus) was (10). 91fishes were found to be infected with P. damselae subsp. damselae, seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) was the most infected fish sp. (36), followed by seabream (Sparus aurata) (32), then gray mullet (Mugil capitus) (23). The results indicated that, the total prevalence of P. damselae subsp. piscicida in all examined species (25.24%), the highest seasonal prevalence was recorded in summer season (37.09%) followed by autumn (26%) then spring (20.37%) and winter (11.11%). On the other hand, the total prevalence of P. damselae subsp. damselae in all examined species (45.04%), the highest seasonal prevalence was recorded in summer season (67.74%) followed by autumn (52%) then spring (29.62%) and winter (19.44%). Molecular diagnosis with conventional PCR used to confirm the traditional isolation was applied by using specific primers of two genes (polycapsular saccharide gene and urease C gene). The histopathological studies of naturally infected marine fishes showed severe inflammatory reactions in different organs with accumulation of melanomacrophages and necrosis. The results confirm that P. damselae subspecies damsalea is the most prevalent pathogen between marine fishes, and seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) was the highly affected marine fishes in this study.

Biochemical constituents and master elements (Pb, Cr, Cd, Fe, Cu, Zn, Hg, B, Al, SO42-, Na, K, Li, Ca, Mg, and F) were investigated in six different seaweed species from Abu Qir Bay in the Egyptian Mediterranean Sea coast. The moisture level ranged from 30.26% in Corallina mediterranea to 77.57% in Padina boryana. On dry weight basis, the ash contents varied from 25.53% in Jania rubens to 88.84% in Sargassum wightii. The protein contents fluctuated from 8.26% in S. wightii to 28.01% in J. rubens. Enteromorpha linza showed the highest lipids (4.66%) and carbohydrate contents (78.95%), whereas C. mediterranea had the lowest lipid (0.5%), and carbohydrate contents (38.12%). Chlorophylls and carotenoid contents varied among the species. Total antioxidant capacity of the tested green seaweeds had the highest activities followed by brown and red seaweeds which had a similar trend of phenol and tannins contents. High reducing power was observed in all tested seaweeds extract except Ulva lactuca. Brown species had the highest amount of elements followed by red and green seaweeds. Notably, SO42- recorded the highest level in the tested green species (108.05 mg/g dry weight (DW)). The Ca/Mg and K/Na ratios reflected highly significant difference between seaweed species. This study keeps an eye on 29 parameters and by applying stepwise multiple regression analysis, prospective equations have been set to describe the interactions between these parameters inside seaweeds. Accordingly, the tested seaweeds can be recommended as a source of healthy food with suitable ion quotient and estimated daily intake values.

BACKGROUND: It is widely believed that an imbalance between activated CD8(+) T cells and regulatory T cells (Tregs) exists in patients with vitiligo. Although there is evidence that narrow band ultraviolet (NB-UVB) irradiation can induce Tregs' number and activity, but up to our knowledge, none of the published studies involved the possible effect of NB-UVB on Tregs in vitiligo. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of NB-UVB on circulating CD4(+) CD25(high) FoxP3(+) regulatory T cells (FoxP3(+) Tregs) in vitiligo. METHODS: This prospective analytic study included 20 patients with active non-segmental vitiligo and 20 healthy controls. The patients were exposed to NB-UVB therapy three times per week for 30 sessions. Blood sampling before and after NB-UVB phototherapy was done to evaluate circulating CD4(+) CD25(high) Tregs and Foxp3(+) Tregs. RESULTS: The CD4(+) CD25(high) Tregs% and FoxP3(+) Tregs% were significantly higher in vitiligo patients compared with controls. NB-UVB therapy decreased both of them in patients, but they did not reach those of controls. Each of circulating CD4(+) CD25(high) Tregs% and FoxP3(+) Tregs% didn't correlate with either extent or activity of vitiligo before or after NB-UVB. CONCLUSION: Tregs functional defect is probably having an impact on NSV. NB-UVB may improve the function of Tregs. Understanding the mechanisms through which NB-UVB exert its effect on reducing the number of circulating Tregs would help open up the paths for future therapeutic options.

Background and Aims: Direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) have revolutionized the treatment of patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, resulting in a high sustained virologic response (SVR) rate. However, the published data from the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia are limited to small patient groups and specific DAAs used for patients with genotype-4.(GT-4). This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and safety of DAAs for treating HCV infection in Saudi Arabia in a real-life setting. Methods: This retrospective study from January 2015 to December 2019 included all HCV-infected patients who received DAAs at a tertiary university hospital in Saudi Arabia. Baseline characteristics and laboratory data were collected from health records, including HCV RNA level, genotype, and presence of liver cirrhosis or steatosis. The primary outcome was undetectable HCV RNA at 12 weeks posttreatment (SVR12). Results were stratified based on different DAAs and HCV genotypes. Treatment-related adverse events were recorded. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 25.0. Results: Of the 117 patients included, 43.2% had advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis, and the majority (90.6%) were treatment-naïve. The mean age was 50.1 ± 15.5 years, with 57.3% females. The most common genotype was GT-4 (44.4%), followed by GT-1 (40.2%). Most patients (64.3%) received sofosbuvir and daclatasvir ± ribavirin, while the remaining patients received various DAAs. Overall, 98.3% of the patients achieved SVR12. The therapy was well tolerated, with fatigue and headache being the most common side effects. Conclusions: Treatment with DAAs is highly effective across different genotypes and various DDA regimens in the real world for treating HCV infection in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, contributing to improved patient outcomes and the overall goal of HCV elimination.

RESUMO

This study investigated the effect of heavy metals on the pearl oyster Pinctada radiata from 5 sites along the coast of Alexandria, with focus on its ecological health and potential risks to human consumption. Pollution results showed that Abu-Qir had the highest Cu and Cd values. Montaza and Eastern Harbor had the highest Fe and Pb values, respectively. Statistically, differences in metal concentrations among study sites were significant (p < 0.05). Non-carcinogenic risk (TTHQ) of tested metals and carcinogenic ones of Cd and Pb showed "high risk" on human health by consuming pearl oysters. Morphometric measurements and condition indices were studied to assess growth patterns and health in relation to heavy metals exposure. Key findings showed detectable declines in size and condition index in Eastern Harbor, whereas Abu-Qir recorded the highest values. This condition index performance presented Abu-Qir, Mammora, and Miami as ideal locations for spat collection and oyster rearing, potentially enhancing Egyptian pearl farming. Average values of spatial proximate contents of pearl oyster showed that it was rich in proteins (33.07-58.52%) with low fat content (1.39-1.87%) and carbohydrates (9.72-17.63%). Biochemical composition of pearl oyster demonstrated its high nutritional value which supported its promotion as a functional food for human consumption. The calorie content of pearl oyster was less than 2 Kcal, making this species an alternative source of healthy food to reduce obesity. Regression analysis indicated that Cu, Cd, and Pb had significant effect on 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity, calories, vitamins, and pigment content of the collected oysters.

Metabolites exploration of the ethyl acetate extract of Fusarium solani culture broth that was isolated from Euphorbia tirucalli root afforded five compounds; 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (1), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (2), tyrosol (3), azelaic acid (4), malic acid (5), and fusaric acid (6). Fungal extract as well as its metabolites were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory and anti-hyperpigmentation potential via in vitro cyclooxygenases and tyrosinase inhibition assays, respectively. Azelaic acid (4) exhibited powerful and selective COX-2 inhibition followed by fusaric acid (6) with IC50 values (2.21 ± 0.06 and 4.81 ± 0.14 µM, respectively). As well, azelaic acid (4) had the most impressive tyrosinase inhibitory effect with IC50 value of 8.75 ± 0.18 µM compared to kojic acid (IC50 = 9.27 ± 0.19 µM). Exclusive computational studies of azelaic acid and fusaric acid with COX-2 were in good accord with the in vitro results. Interestingly, this is the first time to investigate and report the potential of compounds 3-6 to inhibit cyclooxygenase enzymes. One of the most invasive forms of skin cancer is melanoma, a molecular docking study using a set of enzymes related to melanoma suggested pirin to be therapeutic target for azelaic acid and fusaric acid as a plausible mechanism for their anti-melanoma activity.

BACKGROUND: Following the adoption of new nomenclature for steatotic liver disease, we aimed to build consensus on the use of International Classification of Diseases codes and recommendations for future research and advocacy. METHODS: Through a two-stage Delphi process, a core group (n = 20) reviewed draft statements and recommendations (n = 6), indicating levels of agreement. Following revisions, this process was repeated with a large expert panel (n = 243) from 73 countries. RESULTS: Consensus ranged from 88.8% to 96.9% (mean = 92.3%). CONCLUSIONS: This global consensus statement provides guidance on harmonizing the International Classification of Diseases coding for steatotic liver disease and future directions to advance the field.

Purpose: Liver stiffness and low platelet count can predict portal hypertension and high-risk varices (HRVs) in patients with cirrhosis. Thus, screening endoscopy may not be required for all patients with compensated advanced chronic liver disease (cACLD). However, data from Saudi Arabia are limited. This study aimed to validate the Baveno VI and expanded Baveno VI criteria for screening endoscopy and identify the risk factors associated with HRVs in patients with cACLD in Saudi Arabia. Patients and Methods: We analyzed data from 215 patients with cACLD diagnosed on transient elastography (LSM > 10 kPa) and had paired platelet count and screening upper endoscopy performed within one year of diagnosis. HRVs or varices needing treatment (VNTs) were defined as medium-to-large esophageal varices (EVs), small EVs with red flags, or gastric varices. Sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve were calculated. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses identified HRV risk factors. Results: The Baveno VI criteria spared 50.7% of endoscopies, missing 3.7% of VNTs, while the expanded Baveno VI criteria spared 63.7% of endoscopies, missing 5.1% VNTs. An LSM <20 kPa and platelet count > 150,000/µL were associated with HRV in 8.1% and 8.3%, respectively. While an LSM <25 kPa and platelet count > 110,000/µL were associated with HRV in 9.7% and 9%, respectively. The Baveno VI criteria had sensitivity and specificity of 76% and 55%, while the expanded criteria had 67% and 69%, respectively. Baveno VI criteria performed better in hepatitis C virus patients than nonalcoholic fatty liver disease patients. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed platelet count and LSM as predictors of HRV. Conclusion: The Baveno VI criteria effectively identified HRVs in cACLD patients from Saudi Arabia, reducing unnecessary endoscopies. Although the expanded criteria avoided more endoscopies, it led to a higher rate of missed HRVs.

Climatic changes are anticipated to have a detrimental effect on calcifying marine species. Calcareous red algae may be especially vulnerable to seasonal variations since they are common and essential biologically, but there is little research on the morpho-anatomical, and chemical characterization of such species. This study conducted the seasonal investigation of the three dominant Mediterranean calcified red algae. Morphological and 18S rRNA analysis confirmed the identification of collected species as Corallina officinalis, Jania rubens, and Amphiroa rigida. In general, C. officinalis was represented in the four seasons and flourishing maximum in autumn (70% of total species individuals). While J. rubens species was represented in winter, autumn, and spring and completely absent in summer. A. rigida was abundant only in the summer season by 40%. A full morphological and anatomical description of these species were examined, and their chemical compositions (carbohydrate, protein, lipid, pigments, and elements content) were assessed in different seasons, where carbohydrates were the dominant accumulates followed by proteins and lipids. Pearson correlation analysis confirmed a positive correlation between salinity level and nitrogenous nutrients of the seawater with the pigment contents (phycobiliproteins, carotenoids, and chlorophyll a) of the studied seaweeds. The results proved that calcified red algae were able to deposit a mixture of calcium carbonates such as calcite, vaterite, calcium oxalate, calcite-III I calcium carbonate, and aragonite in variable forms depending on the species.

The anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, and antimicrobial activities of some common Egyptian seaweeds in addition to their phytochemical and heavy metal contents were investigated. Phytochemical screening of the seaweed extracts showed the presence of different primary and secondary metabolites with different concentrations according to their species and the used solvent. The ethanolic extract of Colpmenia sinuosa (CSBE2) exhibited the maximum anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activity at 1000 µg/ml concentration compared to other seaweed extracts. The dichloromethane extract of Corallina officinalis (CORM) exerted the highest antimicrobial activity with an average inhibition zone diameter (AV) = 15.29 mm and activity index (AI) = 1.53 and with the highest antagonistic activity against Escherichia coli (28 mm). It is followed by Ulva linza ethanolic extract (ULGE2) which recorded (AV) of 14.71 mm and (AI) of 1.30 with the highest antifungal activity against Candida albicans (30 mm). The collected seaweeds would therefore be a very promising source for treating inflammatory, arthritic, and microbial diseases. Moreover, the investigated seaweeds showed variable concentrations of heavy metals among various species. The mean concentrations of the heavy metals took the following order: Fe > Zn > Mn > Ba > Cu > As > Cr > Ni > Pb > V > Cd > Se > Co > Mo. Based on the permissible limits set by the WHO and CEVA, Pb and Ni in the studied seaweeds were found to be within the permissible limits, whereas Cd and Zn contents were at the borderline. Significant correlations were observed between studied parameters. The estimated daily intakes for most heavy metals were lower than the recommended daily intakes.

Introduction: Brown seaweeds are excellent sources of bioactive molecules with a wide range of pharmacological effects, whose content can vary depending on several factors, including the origin and the environment in which the algae grow. Methods: This study aimed to estimate 19 compounds regarding primary and secondary metabolites of eight brown macroalgal species from a clean Egyptian Red Sea coast. A proximate analysis, pigment, phenolic compounds, and vitamin contents were determined. In addition, the energy content and antioxidant activity were estimated to explore the potential application of algae as functional foods to encourage the species' commercialization. Results: Based on the chemical composition, Polycladia myrica was the most valuable species, with a comparatively high protein content of 22.54%, lipid content of 5.21%, fucoxanthin content of 3.12 µg/g, ß-carotene content of 0.55 mg/100 g, and carbohydrate content of 45.2%. This species also acts as a great source of vitamin C, flavonoids, tannins, phenol content and total antioxidant capacity. Discussion: The antioxidant activity of the selected algae indicated that its phenol, vitamin and pigment contents were powerful antioxidant compounds based on the structure-activity relationships. This result was verified by the strong correlation in statistical analysis at the 95% confidence level. From a worldwide perspective and based on the obtained results, these brown species may be reinforced as an essential line in future foods.
