RESUMO

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is thought to result from susceptibility genotypes and environmental risk factors. The offspring of women who experience pregnancy infection have an increased risk for autism. Maternal immune activation (MIA) in pregnant animals produces offspring with autistic behaviors, making MIA a useful model for autism. However, how MIA causes autistic behaviors in offspring is not fully understood. Here, we show that NKCC1 is critical for mediating autistic behaviors in MIA offspring. We confirmed that MIA induced by poly(I:C) infection during pregnancy leads to autistic behaviors in offspring. We further demonstrated that MIA offspring showed significant microglia activation, excessive dendritic spines, and narrow postsynaptic density (PSD) in their prefrontal cortex (PFC). Then, we discovered that these abnormalities may be caused by overexpression of NKCC1 in MIA offspring's PFCs. Finally, we ameliorated the autistic behaviors using PFC microinjection of NKCC1 inhibitor bumetanide (BTN) in MIA offspring. Our findings may shed new light on the pathological mechanisms for autism caused by pregnancy infection.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to explore the mechanism of artemisinin in treating primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) based on network pharmacology and experimental validation. METHODS: Relevant targets of the artemisinin and pSS-related targets were integrated by public databases online. An artemisinin-pSS network was constructed by Cytoscape. The genes of artemisinin regulating pSS were imported into STRING database to construct a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network in order to predict the key targets. The enrichment analyses were performed to predict the crucial mechanism and pathway of artemisinin against pSS. The active component of artemisinin underwent molecular docking with the key proteins. Artemisinin was administered intragastrically to SS-like NOD/Ltj mice to validate the efficacy and critical mechanisms. RESULTS: Network Pharmacology analysis revealed that artemisinin corresponded to 412 targets, and pSS related to 1495 genes. There were 40 intersection genes between artemisinin and pSS. KEGG indicated that therapeutic effects of artemisinin on pSS involves IL-17 signaling pathway, HIF-1 signaling pathway, apoptosis signaling pathway, Th17 cell differentiation, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, and MAPK signaling pathway. Molecular docking results further showed that the artemisinin molecule had higher binding energy by combining with the key nodes in IL-17 signaling pathway. In vivo experiments suggested artemisinin can restored salivary gland secretory function and improve the level of glandular damage of NOD/Ltj mice. It contributed to the increase of regulatory T cells (Tregs) and the downregulated secretion of IL-17 in NOD/Ltj model. CONCLUSION: The treatment of pSS with artemisinin is closely related to modulating the balance of Tregs and Th17 cells via T cell differentiation.

RESUMO

An efficient palladium-catalyzed [2 + 2 + 1] annulation of 3-iodochromones, bridged olefins, and iodomethane is described, affording a range of chromone-containing polycyclic compounds. Additionally, the corresponding deuterated products were smoothly obtained with iodomethane-d3 instead of iodomethane. Moreover, the synthetic utility of this method is further substantiated by gram scale preparation and application to late-stage modification of estrone.

RESUMO

A low-frequency variant of sushi, von Willebrand factor type A, EGF, and pentraxin domain-containing protein 1 (SVEP1) is associated with the risk of coronary artery disease, as determined by a genome-wide association study. SVEP1 induces vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation and an inflammatory phenotype to promote atherosclerosis. In the present study, qRT‒PCR demonstrated that the mRNA expression of SVEP1 was significantly increased in atherosclerotic plaques compared to normal tissues. Bioinformatics revealed that EGR1 was a transcription factor for SVEP1. The results of the luciferase reporter assay, siRNA interference or overexpression assay, mutational analysis and ChIP confirmed that EGR1 positively regulated the transcriptional activity of SVEP1 by directly binding to its promoter. EGR1 promoted human coronary artery smooth muscle cell (HCASMC) proliferation and migration via SVEP1 in response to oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) treatment. Moreover, the expression level of EGR1 was increased in atherosclerotic plaques and showed a strong linear correlation with the expression of SVEP1. Our findings indicated that EGR1 binding to the promoter region drive SVEP1 transcription to promote HCASMC proliferation and migration.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the impact of disease duration on clinical phenotypes in Chinese patients with primary Sjögren syndrome (pSS) and examine the correlation between clinical phenotypes and onset age, age at diagnosis, and disease duration. METHODS: Data from 952 patients diagnosed with pSS in China between January 2013 and March 2022 were analyzed based on medical records. Patients were categorized into 3 groups based on disease duration: short (<5 years), moderate (≥5 and <10 years), and long (≥10 years) group. Clinical characteristics were compared among the 3 groups, and pSS patients with a long disease duration were compared with the other patients after matching age at diagnosis and age at onset. RESULTS: Among the patients, 20.4% had a disease duration over 10 years. After matching for age at onset and age at diagnosis, pSS patients with a long disease duration exhibited a significantly higher prevalence of dry mouth ( p <0.001), dry eyes ( p <0.001), fatigue ( p <0.001), arthralgia ( p <0.001), and dental caries ( p <0.001) and higher rates of anti-Sjögren syndrome A ( p < 0.05), anti-Ro52 ( p < 0.05), and anti-SSB ( p < 0.05) positivity than their control groups, with prevalence increasing with disease duration ( ptrend < 0.001). However, no differences were noted in the prevalence of interstitial lung disease and leukopenia between different disease duration groups after matching for age at onset, although differences were shown when matching for age at diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Longer disease duration in pSS patients correlates with increased prevalence of sicca symptoms, fatigue, and arthralgia and higher positivity of autoantibodies associated with pSS. However, the prevalence of interstitial lung disease and leukopenia did not correlate with disease duration after matching for age at onset.

RESUMO

Compared with uniaxial molecular ferroelectrics, multiaxial ferroelectrics have better application prospects because they are no longer subject to the single-crystal form and have been pursued in recent years. Halogen engineering refers to the adjustment of halogens in materials at the atomic level, which can not only explore multiaxial ferroelectrics but also help to improve piezoelectrics, recently. In this work, we successfully synthesized and characterized three multiaxial plastic ferroelectrics through the precise molecular design from I to Cl, confirming the increase of the number of polar axes of ferroelectrics from 3 to 6, the increase of second-harmonic generation density from 2.1 times to nearly 6 times of monopotassium phosphate, and the increase of piezoelectric coefficient by 140%. This systematic work has proved that halogen engineering can not only enrich the family of multiaxial plastic ferroelectrics but also promote the further development of nonlinear optical and piezoelectric materials.

RESUMO

Due to the extremely high bond energy of N≡N (∼941 kJ/mol), the traditional Haber-Bosch process of ammonia synthesis is known as an energy-intensive and high CO2-emission industry. In this paper, a cascade N2 reduction process with dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma oxidation and electrocatalytic reduction as an alternative route is first proposed. N2 is oxidized to be reactive nitrogen species (RNS) by nonthermal plasma, which would then be absorbed by KOH solution and electroreduced to NH4+. It is found that the production of NOx is a function of discharge length, discharge power, and gas flow rate. Afterward, the cobalt catalyst is used in the process of electrocatalytic reduction of ammonia, which shows high selectivity (Faradic efficiency (FE) above 90%) and high yield of ammonia (45.45 mg/h). Finally, the cascade plasma oxidation and electrocatalytic reduction for ammonia synthesis is performed. Also, the performance of the reaction system is evaluated. It is worth mentioning that a stable and sustainable ammonia production efficiency of 16.21 mg/h is achieved, and 22.16% of NOx obtained by air activation is converted into NH4+. This work provides a demonstration for further industrial application of ammonia production with DBD plasma oxidation and electrocatalytic reduction techniques.

RESUMO

High-performance thermoelectric materials in theoretical and experimental research are mostly composed of expensive, scarce, heavy elements and rarely of single light elements, which severely limit their application and development. Based on density functional and semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory, we determine that a stable phosphorene allotrope, named Tri-Tri phosphorene, has super-high electron mobility (23845.29 cm2 V-1 s-1) much higher than those of most two-dimension materials. Moreover, its optimized maximum ZT can reach up to 3.43 at room temperature (4.83 at 500 K and 5.92 at 700 K), exhibiting highly favorable prospects in practical thermoelectric systems. Motivated by the excellent properties of Tri-Tri phosphorene, we further demonstrate the structural stability of Tri-Tri arsenene and Tri-Tri antimonene and predict that the two Tri-Tri structures also have high Seebeck coefficients and electron mobilities. Their lattice thermal conductivities are dramatically decreased compared with Tri-Tri phosphorene. Thus, their predicted thermoelectric performances are also excellent, with maximum ZT values of 4.12 (Tri-Tri arsenene) and 3.54 (Tri-Tri antimonene) at room temperature. The low layer moduli of the three Tri-Tri structures indicate that they have high mechanical flexibility and suitability for current device assemblies. All these desirable properties make Tri-Tri group-VA materials promising for future applications in thermoelectric devices.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Thromboelastography (TEG) is a viscoelastic test that may be used to evaluate the hemostatic function of whole blood, and it may be useful for burn patients with multiple hemostatic defects. METHODS: We retrospectively recruited patients with burns between January 2019 and July 2021. Blood samples were drawn on admission and subjected to coagulation parameter assessment, including conventional coagulation tests and TEG assessment. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to predict the occurrence of complications in patients with early burns. RESULTS: Ninety-three patients with early burns met the inclusion criteria. Patients with minor, moderate, severe, and extremely severe burns accounted for 19.4 %, 36.6 %, 16.1 %, and 27.9 % of all patients, respectively. Compared with the healthy controls, patients with early burns showed significant reductions in the R and K values, and significant elevation in the maximum amplitude (MA), coagulation index (CI), and alpha angle. Compared with minor and moderate burn patients, patients with severe and extremely severe burns had lower K values and thrombin time and higher alpha angle, CI, prothrombin time, international normalized ratio, D-dimer, and fibrin degradation products. Patients with hypercoagulation had lower R and K values, longer MA, longer CI, and greater alpha angle. After ROC analysis, the areas under the ROC curve for acute lung injury, acute kidney injury, and bleeding were 0.789, 0.802, and 0.900, respectively. CONCLUSION: TEG provides insight into the hemostatic state of patients with early burns, and can predict complications in early burn patients when combined with conventional coagulation tests.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Culturally validated neurocognitive measures for children in Low- and Middle-Income Countries are important in the timely and correct identification of neurocognitive impairments. Such measures can inform development of interventions for children exposed to additional vulnerabilities like HIV infection. The Battery for Neuropsychological Evaluation of Children (BENCI) is an openly available, computerized neuropsychological battery specifically developed to evaluate neurocognitive impairment. This study adapted the BENCI and evaluated its reliability and validity in Kenya. METHODOLOGY: The BENCI was adapted using translation and back-translation from Spanish to English. The psychometric properties were evaluated in a case-control study of 328 children (aged 6 - 14 years) living with HIV and 260 children not living with HIV in Kenya. We assessed reliability, factor structure, and measurement invariance with respect to HIV. Additionally, we examined convergent validity of the BENCI using tests from the Kilifi Toolkit. RESULTS: Internal consistencies (0.49 < α < 0.97) and test-retest reliabilities (-.34 to .81) were sufficient-to-good for most of the subtests. Convergent validity was supported by significant correlations between the BENCI's Verbal memory and Kilifi's Verbal List Learning (r = .41), the BENCI's Visual memory and Kilifi's Verbal List Learning (r = .32) and the BENCI's Planning total time test and Kilifi's Tower Test (r = -.21) and the BENCI's Abstract Reasoning test and Kilifi's Raven's Progressive Matrix (r = .21). The BENCI subtests highlighted meaningful differences between children living with HIV and those not living with HIV. After some minor adaptions, a confirmatory four-factor model consisting of flexibility, fluency, reasoning and working memory fitted well (χ2 = 135.57, DF = 51, N = 604, p < .001, RMSEA = .052, CFI = .944, TLI = .914) and was partially scalar invariant between HIV positive and negative groups. CONCLUSION: The English version of the BENCI formally translated for use in Kenya can be further adapted and integrated in clinical and research settings as a valid and reliable cognitive test battery.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of low-dose atropine eyedrops on pupil metrics. METHODS: This study was based on a randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled, and cross-over trial in mainland China. In phase 1, subjects received 0.01% atropine or placebo once nightly. After 1 year, the atropine group switched to placebo (atropine-placebo group), and the placebo group switched to atropine (placebo-atropine group). Ocular parameters were measured at the crossover time point (at the 12th month) and the 18th month. RESULTS: Of 105 subjects who completed the study, 48 and 57 children were allocated into the atropine-placebo and placebo-atropine groups, respectively. After cessation, the photopic pupil diameter (PD) and mesopic PD both decreased (- 0.46 ± 0.47 mm, P < 0.001; - 0.30 ± 0.74 mm, P = 0.008), and the constriction ratio (CR, %) increased (4.39 ± 7.54, P < 0.001) compared with values at the crossover time point of the atropine-placebo group; pupil metrics of the atropine-placebo group had no difference from the values at the crossover time point of the placebo-atropine group. After 6 months of treatment, the photopic PD and the mesopic PD increased (0.54 ± 0.67 mm, P < 0.001; 0.53 ± 0.89 mm, P < 0.001), the CR (%) decreased (- 2.53 ± 8.64, P < 0.001) compared with values at the crossover time point of the placebo-atropine group. There was no significant relationship between pupil metrics and myopia progression during 0.01% atropine treatment. CONCLUSION: Pupil metrics and the CR could return to pre-atropine levels after cessation. Pupil metrics had no significant effect on myopia progression during treatment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to study clinical and biological differences between men and women with primary Sjögren syndrome (pSS) in China and perform a literature review to confirm if the clinical phenotypes are affected by sex in patients with pSS. METHODS: Data from 961 patients with pSS treated at a tertiary hospital in China between January 2013 and March 2022 were analyzed based on medical records. Clinical characteristics, including disease manifestations and serological parameters of the disease, were compared between men and women with pSS using the Mann-Whitney U test and χ 2 test. RESULTS: This study included 140 (14.6%) men and 821 (85.4%) women with pSS. Women with pSS demonstrated a higher prevalence of dry mouth, dry eyes, arthralgia, and dental caries ( p < 0.05); higher erythrocyte sedimentation rate and immunoglobulin M levels ( p < 0.05); higher prevalence of leukopenia, neutropenia, anemia, low complement 3, and low complement 4 ( p < 0.05); and higher titers of antinuclear antibody, anti-Sjögren syndrome A, anti-Ro52, and rheumatoid factor positivity ( p < 0.05) than men, whereas men with pSS had a higher prevalence of parotid enlargement and interstitial lung disease ( p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Women with pSS are associated with more dryness, cytopenia, hypocomplementemia, and autoantibody positivity. Although men with pSS probably have lighter sicca symptoms and lower immunoactivity and serologic responses, regular monitoring of interstitial lung disease in men is vital.

RESUMO

Inflammasomes are important components of the innate immune system. They are assembled by cytoplasmic pattern recognition receptors and play a critical role in the pathogenesis and progression of various inflammatory diseases through regulating the release and activation of inflammatory cytokines and inducing cell prytosis. NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome has been widely studied and has been shown to be closely associated with cardiovascular diseases and metabolic disorders. Bone and joint diseases, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis show high prevalence worldwide and can cause bone and cartilage damage, pain, and dysfunction, adversely affecting the patients' quality of life. The reported findings of some studies indicate that the pathogenesis of various bone and articular diseases is associated with NLRP3 inflammasome. Small molecule antagonists targeting NLRP3 inflammasome have shown considerable therapeutic potentials, but their clinical application still needs further exploration. Herein, we reviewed the composition and function of NLRP3 inflammasome and its association with bone and articular diseases.

RESUMO

We theoretically investigate the photoelectron momentum distribution of He atoms by numerically solving the time-dependent Schro¨dinger equation (TDSE) in few-cycle ionization gating, which is synthesized by two linearly polarized laser pulses. When applying the TDSE, we can clearly see the spider-like structures in the photoelectron momentum spectra. We also find that the spider-like structures can be isolated by changing the relative phase. The directionality of the spider-like structure is changed from right-side to left-side and the ring-like interference structure gradually appears in the photoelectron momentum spectra when increasing the relative phase. The interference patterns observed in TDSE are recaptured well by the quantum-trajectory Monte Carlo (QTMC) model. We separate the ionization time window of the tunneling electron by analyzing the ionization rate. With the help of QTMC simulation, we illustrate the change of the interference structure and its directionality in the photoelectron momentum spectra. By changing the relative phase, the forward-backward asymmetry of the momentum distribution of the emitted electrons can also be controlled. Moreover, we find that the relative contribution of the nonrescattering and the rescattering trajectories can be controlled. These properties are beneficial for the application of photoelecron holography in probing atomic and molecular structures and dynamics.

RESUMO

The apoplast serves as the first battlefield between the plant hosts and invading microbes; therefore, work on plant-pathogen interactions has increasingly focused on apoplastic immunity. In this study, we identified three proteins in the apoplast of cotton (Gossypium sp) root cells during interaction of the plant with the fungal pathogen Verticillium dahliae Among these proteins, cotton host cells secrete chitinase 28 (Chi28) and the Cys-rich repeat protein 1 (CRR1), while the pathogen releases the protease VdSSEP1. Biochemical analysis demonstrated that VdSSEP1 hydrolyzed Chi28, but CRR1 protected Chi28 from cleavage by Verticillium dahliae secretory Ser protease 1 (VdSSEP1). In accordance with the in vitro results, CRR1 interacted with Chi28 in yeast and plant cells and attenuated the observed decrease in Chi28 level that occurred in the apoplast of plant cells upon pathogen attack. Knockdown of CRR1 or Chi28 in cotton plants resulted in higher susceptibility to V. dahliae infection, and overexpression of CRR1 increased plant resistance to V dahliae, the fungus Botrytis cinerea, and the oomycete Phytophthora parasitica var nicotianae By contrast, knockout of VdSSEP1 in V. dahliae destroyed the pathogenicity of this fungus. Together, our results provide compelling evidence for a multilayered interplay of factors in cotton apoplastic immunity.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The exponential growth of published systematic reviews (SRs) presents challenges for decision makers seeking to answer clinical, public health or policy questions. In 1997, an algorithm was created by Jadad et al. to choose the best SR across multiple. Our study aims to replicate author assessments using the Jadad algorithm to determine: (i) if we chose the same SR as the authors; and (ii) if we reach the same results. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Epistemonikos, and Cochrane Database of SRs. We included any study using the Jadad algorithm. We used consensus building strategies to operationalise the algorithm and to ensure a consistent approach to interpretation. RESULTS: We identified 21 studies that used the Jadad algorithm to choose one or more SRs. In 62% (13/21) of cases, we were unable to replicate the Jadad assessment and ultimately chose a different SR than the authors. Overall, 18 out of the 21 (86%) independent Jadad assessments agreed in direction of the findings despite 13 having chosen a different SR. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the Jadad algorithm is not reproducible between users as there are no prescriptive instructions about how to operationalise the algorithm. In the absence of a validated algorithm, we recommend that healthcare providers, policy makers, patients and researchers address conflicts between review findings by choosing the SR(s) with meta-analysis of RCTs that most closely resemble their clinical, public health, or policy question, are the most recent, comprehensive (i.e. number of included RCTs), and at the lowest risk of bias.

RESUMO

Nitrogen is the nearest neighbor element of carbon and, thus, the hexagonal honeycomb carbon nitride monolayer (CxNy), which consists of a covalent network of carbon and nitrogen atoms, usually has attractive physical and chemical properties similar to those in graphene. Here, we systematically investigate the geometric structure, mechanical properties, thermal transport properties, and plasmon excitation of a new phase, labeled C3N2, and make a detailed comparison with other possible CxNy allotropes. All CxNy have a super-high layer modulus and Young's modulus. But compared with the others, C3N2 exhibits excellent mechanical flexibility, and can withstand a relatively high critical strain up to 20% (18%) along the X(Y) direction. Additionally, C3N2 also has excellent thermal and electronic transport properties, with a super-high lattice thermal conductivity of ∼110.9 W m-1 K-1 and electron mobility of ∼1617.52 cm2 V-1 s-1 at 300 K. By performing time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), we obtain the optical absorptions of C3N2 and C3N, and meanwhile analyze their Fourier transforms of induced charge densities at some resonant frequencies. The main optical absorption peaks of the C3N2 nanostructure are located in the ultraviolet region, and its plasmon peaks are far higher than those in C3N. Its excellent mechanical and optical properties, the larger electronic band gap, and the higher electron mobility suggest that C3N2 has great potential for application in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics.

RESUMO

Wnt signaling is relevant for a wide range of biological processes, including reproductive function. The function of Wnt10a in female fertility, however, remains obscure. In the present study, we explored the structure and function of the female reproductive organs in Wnt10a knockout (KO) mice. The expression of ß-catenin signaling was significantly lower in the ovaries of the Wnt10a KO mice compared with wild-type (WT) mice. In addition, the estrous cycles were disrupted, ovarian follicles were diminished, and endometria were thinner, accompanied by lower serum estrogen levels, and higher testosterone and progesterone levels in Wnt10a KO mice. The expression of the ovarian cytochrome P450 family 19 subfamily A member 1 (Cyp19a1) was significantly lower in Wnt10a KO mice. We detected no significant changes in the levels of the gonadotropins between WT and KO mice. Together, our findings indicate that deficiency of Wnt10a causes female infertility through ß-catenin and Cyp19a1signaling pathways in mice.

BACKGROUND: The three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has remarkable potential as an auxiliary tool for representing anatomical structures, facilitating diagnosis and therapy, and enhancing training and teaching in the medical field. As the most available diagnostic tool and it is routinely used as the first approach in diagnosis of the uterine anomalies, 3D transvaginal ultrasonography (3D-TVS) has been proposed as non-invasive "gold standard" approach for these malformations due to high diagnostic accuracy. Despite holding promise of manufacturing 3D printed models based on 3D-TVS data, relevant reports about 3D-TVS derived gynecological 3D printing haven't been reported to the best of our knowledge. We found an opportunity to explore the feasibility of building 3D printed models for the abnormal uterus based on the data acquired by 3D-TVS. METHODS: The women suspected with congenital uterine anomalies (CUAs) were enrolled in the study. The diagnose of CUAs were made by 3D-TVS scanning and further confirmed under the hysteroscopy examination. One volunteer with normal uterus was enrolled as control. All subjects underwent 3D-TVS scanning for 3D printing data collection. Acquired images were stored and extracted as DICOM files, then processed by professional software to portray and model the boundary of the uterine inner and outer walls separately. After the computer 3D models were constructed, the data were saved and output as STL files for further surface restoration and smoothing. The colors of endometrium and uterine body were specified, respectively, in the print preview mode. Then the uncured photosensitive resin was cleaned and polished to obtain a smooth and transparent solid model after printed models were cooled down. RESULTS: 3D printing models of normal uterus, incomplete septate uterus, complete septate uterus, uterus didelphys and unicornuate uterus were produced on ultrasonographic data of 3D-TVS. CONCLUSIONS: Our research and practice made the first try in modeling CUAs successfully based on ultrasonographic data entirely, verifying that it's a feasible way to build 3D printed models of high-quality through 3D-TVS scanning.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To provide a contemporary review on endovascular false lumen (FL) embolization for thoracic aortic dissection (AD) and evaluate its early outcome. METHODS: A systematic literature review on FL embolization for thoracic AD from January 2003 to December 2020 was performed under the instruction of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. Each article was analyzed using a standardized protocol including predefined demographic characteristics, perioperative mortality, and major complications. RESULTS: A total of 29 papers with 229 patients were included into the analysis. The methods of FL occlusion used were the candy-plug technique, the knickerbocker technique, the "cork in the bottleneck" technique, and direct FL embolization with a combination of stent-grafts, coils, onyx, plugs, and glue. FL embolization procedure was performed in 79 patients (34.5%) with type A AD and 150 (65.5%) with type B AD. FL direct embolization was the most frequently used technique and it was applied in 198 (86.5%) patients. Candy-plug, knickerbocker, and "cork in the bottleneck" techniques were used in 26 (11.4%), 3 (1.3%), and 2 (0.9%) patients, respectively. Technical success was achieved in all patients except one (228/229, 99.6%) in which implantation of a stent to celiac trunk was not possible. There were 4 hospital deaths (1.7%). Neurological complications occurred in 6 patients (2.6%), including 4 (1.7%) spinal cord ischemia and 2 (0.9%) ischemic stroke. There were 1 (0.4%) iatrogenic retrograde dissection and 2 (0.9%) renal failure reported. The mean duration of follow-up was 16.5 months. There were 21 deaths (9.3%) during follow-up and 8 (3.6%) were aorta-related. Thirty three (14.7%) secondary interventions were performed. Five patients (2.2%) required an open completion thoracoabdominal procedure incorporating the stent-graft into the repair. Complete FL thrombosis was observed in 181 (80.4%) patients, 34 (15.1%) had partial thrombosis, and 10 (4.4%) had FL progression. CONCLUSIONS: FL embolization of the distal thoracic aorta is a promising technique in a group of patients to promote FL thrombosis and aortic remodeling in thoracic aorta.
