MicroLED displays have been in the spotlight as the next-generation displays owing to their various advantages, including long lifetime and high brightness compared with organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays. As a result, microLED technology1,2 is being commercialized for large-screen displays such as digital signage and active R&D programmes are being carried out for other applications, such as augmented reality3, flexible displays4 and biological imaging5. However, substantial obstacles in transfer technology, namely, high throughput, high yield and production scalability up to Generation 10+ (2,940 × 3,370 mm2) glass sizes, need to be overcome so that microLEDs can enter mainstream product markets and compete with liquid-crystal displays and OLED displays. Here we present a new transfer method based on fluidic self-assembly (FSA) technology, named magnetic-force-assisted dielectrophoretic self-assembly technology (MDSAT), which combines magnetic and dielectrophoresis (DEP) forces to achieve a simultaneous red, green and blue (RGB) LED transfer yield of 99.99% within 15 min. By embedding nickel, a ferromagnetic material, in the microLEDs, their movements were controlled by using magnets, and by applying localized DEP force centred around the receptor holes, these microLEDs were effectively captured and assembled in the receptor site. Furthermore, concurrent assembly of RGB LEDs were demonstrated through shape matching between microLEDs and receptors. Finally, a light-emitting panel was fabricated, showing damage-free transfer characteristics and uniform RGB electroluminescence emission, demonstrating our MDSAT method to be an excellent transfer technology candidate for high-volume production of mainstream commercial products.

Global healthcare based on the Internet of Things system is rapidly transforming to measure precise physiological body parameters without visiting hospitals at remote patients and associated symptoms monitoring. 2D materials and the prevailing mood of current ever-expanding MXene-based sensing devices motivate to introduce first the novel iridium (Ir) precious metal incorporated vanadium (V)-MXene via industrially favored emerging atomic layer deposition (ALD) techniques. The current work contributes a precise control and delicate balance of Ir single atomic forms or clusters on the V-MXene to constitute a unique precious metal-MXene embedded heterostructure (Ir-ALD@V-MXene) in practical real-time sensing healthcare applications to thermography with human-machine interface for the first time. Ir-ALD@V-MXene delivers an ultrahigh durability and sensing performance of 2.4% °C-1 than pristine V-MXene (0.42% °C-1), outperforming several conventionally used MXenes, graphene, underscoring the importance of the Ir-ALD innovative process. Aberration-corrected advanced ultra-high-resolution transmission/scanning transmission electron microscopy confirms the presence of Ir atomic clusters on well-aligned 2D-layered V-MXene structure and their advanced heterostructure formation (Ir-ALD@V-MXene), enhanced sensing mechanism is investigated using density functional theory (DFT) computations. A rational design empowering the Ir-ALD process on least explored V-MXene can potentially unfold further precious metals ALD-process developments for next-generation wearable personal healthcare devices.

Broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs) against the membrane-proximal external region (MPER) of the gp41 component of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) envelope (Env) are characterized by long, hydrophobic, heavy chain complementarity-determining region 3s (HCDR3s) that interact with the MPER and some viral membrane lipids to achieve increased local concentrations. Here, we show that increasing the local concentration of MPER-directed bNAbs at the cell surface via binding to the high-affinity Fc receptor FcγRI potentiates their ability to prevent viral entry in a manner analogous to the previously reported observation wherein the lipid-binding activity of MPER bNAbs increases their concentration at the viral surface membrane. However, binding of MPER-directed bNAb 10E8 to FcγRI abolishes the neutralization synergy that is seen with the N-heptad repeat (NHR)-targeting antibody D5_AR and NHR-targeting small molecule enfuvirtide (T20), possibly due to decreased accessibility of the NHR in the FcγRI-10E8-MPER complex. Taken together, our results suggest that lipid-binding activity and FcγRI-mediated potentiation function in concert to improve the potency of MPER-directed bNAbs by increasing their local concentration near the site of viral fusion. Therefore, lipid binding may not be a strict requirement for potent neutralization by MPER-targeting bNAbs, as alternative methods can achieve similar increases in local concentrations while avoiding potential liabilities associated with immunologic host tolerance. IMPORTANCE The trimeric glycoprotein Env, the only viral protein expressed on the surface of HIV-1, is the target of broadly neutralizing antibodies and the focus of most vaccine development efforts. Broadly neutralizing antibodies targeting the membrane proximal external region (MPER) of Env show lipid-binding characteristics, and modulating this interaction affects neutralization. In this study, we tested the neutralization potencies of variants of the MPER-targeting antibody 10E8 with different viral-membrane-binding and host FcγRI-binding capabilities. Our results suggest that binding to both lipid and FcγRI improves the neutralization potency of MPER-directed antibodies by concentrating the antibodies at sites of viral fusion. As such, lipid binding may not be uniquely required for MPER-targeting broadly neutralizing antibodies, as alternative methods to increase local concentration can achieve similar improvements in potency.

Spatial learning and memory flexibility are known to require long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD), respectively, on a cellular basis. We previously showed that cyclin Y (CCNY), a synapse-remodeling cyclin, is a novel actin-binding protein and an inhibitory regulator of functional and structural LTP in vitro. In this study, we report that Ccny knockout (KO) mice exhibit enhanced LTP and weak LTD at Schaffer collateral-CA1 synapses in the hippocampus. In accordance with enhanced LTP, Ccny KO mice showed improved spatial learning and memory. However, although previous studies reported that normal LTD is necessary for memory flexibility, Ccny KO mice intriguingly showed improved memory flexibility, suggesting that weak LTD could exert memory flexibility when combined with enhanced LTP. At the molecular level, CCNY modulated spatial learning and memory flexibility by distinctively affecting the cofilin-actin signaling pathway in the hippocampus. Specifically, CCNY inhibited cofilin activation by original learning, but reversed such inhibition by reversal learning. Furthermore, viral-mediated overexpression of a phosphomimetic cofilin-S3E in hippocampal CA1 regions enhanced LTP, weakened LTD, and improved spatial learning and memory flexibility, thus mirroring the phenotype of Ccny KO mice. In contrast, the overexpression of a non-phosphorylatable cofilin-S3A in hippocampal CA1 regions of Ccny KO mice reversed the synaptic plasticity, spatial learning, and memory flexibility phenotypes observed in Ccny KO mice. Altogether, our findings demonstrate that LTP and LTD cooperatively regulate memory flexibility. Moreover, CCNY suppresses LTP while facilitating LTD in the hippocampus and negatively regulates spatial learning and memory flexibility through the control of cofilin-actin signaling, proposing CCNY as a learning regulator modulating both memorizing and forgetting processes.

BACKGROUND: Although the development of BCR::ABL1 tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) rendered chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) a manageable condition, acquisition of drug resistance during blast phase (BP) progression remains a critical challenge. Here, we reposition FLT3, one of the most frequently mutated drivers of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), as a prognostic marker and therapeutic target of BP-CML. METHODS: We generated FLT3 expressing BCR::ABL1 TKI-resistant CML cells and enrolled phase-specific CML patient cohort to obtain unpaired and paired serial specimens and verify the role of FLT3 signaling in BP-CML patients. We performed multi-omics approaches in animal and patient studies to demonstrate the clinical feasibility of FLT3 as a viable target of BP-CML by establishing the (1) molecular mechanisms of FLT3-driven drug resistance, (2) diagnostic methods of FLT3 protein expression and localization, (3) association between FLT3 signaling and CML prognosis, and (4) therapeutic strategies to tackle FLT3+ CML patients. RESULTS: We reposition the significance of FLT3 in the acquisition of drug resistance in BP-CML, thereby, newly classify a FLT3+ BP-CML subgroup. Mechanistically, FLT3 expression in CML cells activated the FLT3-JAK-STAT3-TAZ-TEAD-CD36 signaling pathway, which conferred resistance to a wide range of BCR::ABL1 TKIs that was independent of recurrent BCR::ABL1 mutations. Notably, FLT3+ BP-CML patients had significantly less favorable prognosis than FLT3- patients. Remarkably, we demonstrate that repurposing FLT3 inhibitors combined with BCR::ABL1 targeted therapies or the single treatment with ponatinib alone can overcome drug resistance and promote BP-CML cell death in patient-derived FLT3+ BCR::ABL1 cells and mouse xenograft models. CONCLUSION: Here, we reposition FLT3 as a critical determinant of CML progression via FLT3-JAK-STAT3-TAZ-TEAD-CD36 signaling pathway that promotes TKI resistance and predicts worse prognosis in BP-CML patients. Our findings open novel therapeutic opportunities that exploit the undescribed link between distinct types of malignancies.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the association between distress at initial diagnosis and disease-free survival in patients with resectable colon cancer. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Considerable research has examined the psychological impact of having a confirmed diagnosis of cancer, but relatively limited research has examined the impact of distress during the diagnostic phase on oncological outcomes. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study. We included newly diagnosed colon cancer patients who had resectable surgery and underwent distress screening between July 2014 and July 2021 (N=1,362). The Korean versions of the Distress Thermometer were used to assess distress and related problems. Patients were categorized into 3 groups based on distress score: low (<4), moderate (4-7), and severe (≥8). The primary outcome was disease-free survival. RESULTS: The mean distress was 5.1 (SD=2.4) and 61%, and 15% of patients had moderate and severe distress at diagnosis, respectively. The severe distress group was more likely to report fear, sadness, and concerns regarding insurance/finance, work, and childcare than the low distress group. Compared with the low distress group, the severe distress group had worse disease-free survival (Hazard Ratio=1.84, 95% CI=1.03, 3.29). The association was more evident in patients with stage IV disease (Hazard Ratio=2.53, 95% CI=1.02, 6.25). CONCLUSIONS: A substantial number of patients with colon cancer experience distress at diagnosis, and severe distress has a negative impact on oncologic outcomes. Active monitoring and appropriate management of distress at diagnosis should be adopted at clinical settings.

We herein describe a novel centrifugal microfluidic system to achieve multiple standard additions, which could minimize the effects of matrix interference and consequently lead to more accurate and reliable measurements of analyte concentrations in complex samples. The system leverages laser-irradiated ferrowax microvalves to automatically control fluid transfer on the disc without the need for external pumps or pressure systems, simplifying the procedures and eliminating the need for manual intervention. The disc incorporates metering chambers with rationally designed varying sizes, which could lead to the formation of six standard addition samples very rapidly in just 2.5 min. The final solutions are designed to contain a target component at gradually increasing concentrations but have an equal final volume containing the same amount of an analyte solution, thereby equalizing the matrix effect that is supposedly caused by the unknown components in the analyte solution. By utilizing this design principle, we were able to successfully quantify a model target component, salivary thiocyanate ions, that could be used as a biomarker for exposure to tobacco smoke. Our centrifugal microfluidic system holds great promise as a powerful analytical tool to achieve fully automated diagnostic microsystems involving a standard addition process.

This study suggests a Ru/ZnO bilayer grown using area-selective atomic layer deposition (AS-ALD) as a multifunctional layer for advanced Cu metallization. As a diffusion barrier and glue layer, ZnO is selectively grown on SiO2 , excluding Cu, where Ru, as a liner and seed layer, is grown on both surfaces. Dodecanethiol (DDT) is used as an inhibitor for the AS-ALD of ZnO using diethylzinc and H2 O at 120 °C. H2 plasma treatment removes the DDT adsorbed on Cu, forming inhibitor-free surfaces. The ALD-Ru film is then successfully deposited at 220 °C using tricarbonyl(trimethylenemethane)ruthenium and O2 . The Cu/bilayer/Si structural and electrical properties are investigated to determine the diffusion barrier performance of the bilayer film. Copper silicide is not formed without the conductivity degradation of the Cu/bilayer/Si structure, even after annealing at 700 °C. The effect of ZnO on the Ru/SiO2 structure interfacial adhesion energy is investigated using a double-cantilever-beam test and is found to increase with ZnO between Ru and SiO2 . Consequently, the Ru/ZnO bilayer can be a multifunctional layer for advanced Cu interconnects. Additionally, the formation of a bottomless barrier by eliminating ZnO on the via bottom, or Cu, is expected to decrease the via resistance for the ever-shrinking Cu lines.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the elastic modulus, keratocyte-fibroblast-myocyte transformation, and haze formation of the corneal stroma following combined phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) and epithelium-off UV-A/riboflavin corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) using an in vivo rabbit model. Methods: Rabbits underwent PTK and CXL, PTK only, or CXL 35 days before PTK. Rebound tonometry, Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography, and ultrasound pachymetry were performed on days 7, 14, 21, 42, 70, and 90 post-operatively. Atomic force microscopy, histologic inflammation, and immunohistochemistry for α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) were assessed post-mortem. Results: Stromal haze formation following simultaneous PTK and CXL was significantly greater than in corneas that received PTK only and persisted for more than 90 days. No significant difference in stromal haze was noted between groups receiving simultaneous CXL and PTK and those receiving CXL before PTK. Stromal inflammation did not differ between groups at any time point, although the intensity of α-SMA over the number of nuclei was significantly greater at day 21 between groups receiving simultaneous CXL and PTK and those receiving CXL before PTK. The elastic modulus was significantly greater in corneas receiving simultaneous CXL and PTK compared with those receiving PTK alone. Conclusions: We showed that stromal haze formation and stromal stiffness is significantly increased following CXL, regardless of whether it is performed at or before the time of PTK. Further knowledge of the biophysical cues involved in determining corneal wound healing duration and outcomes will be important for understanding scarring following CXL and for the development of improved therapeutic options.

INTRODUCTION: Deep learning-based MRI reconstruction has recently been introduced to improve image quality. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of deep learning reconstruction in pediatric brain MRI. METHODS: A total of 107 consecutive children who underwent 3.0 T brain MRI were included in this study. T2-weighted brain MRI was reconstructed using the three different reconstruction modes: deep learning reconstruction, conventional reconstruction with an intensity filter, and original T2 image without a filter. Two pediatric radiologists independently evaluated the following image quality parameters of three reconstructed images on a 5-point scale: overall image quality, image noisiness, sharpness of gray-white matter differentiation, truncation artifact, motion artifact, cerebrospinal fluid and vascular pulsation artifacts, and lesion conspicuity. The subjective image quality parameters were compared among the three reconstruction modes. Quantitative analysis of the signal uniformity using the coefficient of variation was performed for each reconstruction. RESULTS: The overall image quality, noisiness, and gray-white matter sharpness were significantly better with deep learning reconstruction than with conventional or original reconstruction (all P < 0.001). Deep learning reconstruction had significantly fewer truncation artifacts than the other two reconstructions (all P < 0.001). Motion and pulsation artifacts showed no significant differences among the three reconstruction modes. For 36 lesions in 107 patients, lesion conspicuity was better with deep learning reconstruction than original reconstruction. Deep learning reconstruction showed lower signal variation compared to conventional and original reconstructions. CONCLUSION: Deep learning reconstruction can reduce noise and truncation artifacts and improve lesion conspicuity and overall image quality in pediatric T2-weighted brain MRI.

BACKGROUND Post-cardiac arrest syndrome (PCAS) is a major concern and shares pathophysiology with sepsis. Sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) scores and serum lactate levels, as suggested in the Survival Sepsis Guidelines, have shown significant predictive value for prognosis in patients with sepsis. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate combined use of the SOFA score and serum lactate measurement on survival prognosis in PCAS. MATERIAL AND METHODS Our study included patients with return of spontaneous circulation after cardiac arrest who were age >18 years and underwent targeted temperature management. The 438 patients were allocated to a surviving group and a deceased group at discharge. Multivariable regression models were used to evaluate any association with SOFA scores, serum lactate levels, and survival. To evaluate the predictive value of regression models, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) was assessed. RESULTS Lower SOFA score and serum lactate level were associated with better survival rates in the post-cardiac arrest patients (SOFA score: odds ratio (OR), 0.77; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.67-0.88; P<0.001; lactate level: OR, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.81-0.94; P<0.001). The combined model of the SOFA score and serum lactate level was superior to models including either SOFA score or serum lactate level alone in predicting survival (AUROC, 0.86 vs 0.83, P=0.028, 0.86 vs 0.81, P=0.004). CONCLUSIONS Because of the superiority of the combined model of SOFA score and serum lactate level, combining these 2 factors could improve prediction of prognosis and survival outcomes in PCAS.

BACKGROUND: This study validated the Korean version of the Readiness to Return to Work (RRTW) scale, as an assessment measure, following a musculoskeletal, work-related injury and as a measure of following return to work. METHODS: The participants of this study were workers with experience in rehabilitation programs at the Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service (KCOMWEL) Hospital in Korea. Factor analyses were employed to ensure the validity and reliability of the RRTW scale in claimants who were in treatment without working (the not-working group) or who had already returned to work (the working group). To test structural validity, we analyzed exploratory factor analysis (EFA) respectively for the not working group (exploratory factor analysis (EFA) (n = 200), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) (n = 109), and the working group (n = 123). To verify concurrent validity (multidimensional and assignment approach), the variables that were identified as relevant variables in previous studies were analyzed. RESULTS: The not working group EFA, as shown in the original scale, had four dimensions, and one item was deleted: (1) Precontemplation (PC), (2) Contemplation (C), (3) Prepared for Action-Self-evaluative (PAS), and (4) Prepared for Action-Behavioral (PAB). The CFA revealed that a good model fit and reliability were suitable. Regarding the working group of EFA, it appeared in two dimensions as in the original scale, one item was modified from the UM scale to the PM scale, and the reliability was appropriate. Concurrent validity was satisfied based on the correlation between the RRTW factor and related variables. CONCLUSIONS: RRTW in the Korean version of the instrument was similar to those reported for the original scale, indicating that it may be used in research and clinical settings.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal balloon dilatation is an effective treatment for anastomotic strictures, but the factors affecting the outcome of dilatation remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the predictive factors of esophageal balloon dilatation outcome in children with anastomotic stricture after esophageal atresia repair. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed children with esophageal atresia who underwent esophageal balloon dilatation for postoperative strictures between August 2007 and February 2021. We investigated each child's age, weight and height; type of esophageal atresia surgery; shape, length and level of stricture; esophageal balloon dilatation balloon size; application of mitomycin; number of inflation sessions; and number of esophageal balloon dilatation sessions. The outcome of each esophageal balloon dilatation session was determined as improvement in stricture diameter between pre- and post-esophageal balloon dilatation esophagography. We used uni- and multivariate analyses with generalized estimating equations to evaluate outcome predictors. RESULTS: Overall, 69 children (mean age, 2.3 years; 45 boys) underwent 227 esophageal balloon dilatations. In the univariate analysis, the positive effect of esophageal balloon dilatation decreased with increased age, weight, height, balloon size and number of esophageal balloon dilatation sessions. Additionally, the positive effect was decreased in cervical-level strictures and with the application of mitomycin during esophageal balloon dilatation. In the multivariate analysis, independent prognostic factors of the positive esophageal balloon dilatation effect were age (incidence rate ratio [IRR]: -0.01; 95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.01, -0.002), shape of stricture (IRR: -0.54; 95% CI: -0.91, -0.18) and number of esophageal balloon dilatation sessions (IRR, -0.10; 95% CI: -0.14, -0.18). CONCLUSION: Repeated esophageal balloon dilatation, older age and eccentric stricture shape are associated with poor response to esophageal balloon dilatation in children with anastomotic strictures after esophageal atresia repair.

BACKGROUND: Fractional flow reserve (FFR) based on computed tomography (CT) has been shown to better identify ischemia-causing coronary stenosis. However, this current technology requires high computational power, which inhibits its widespread implementation in clinical practice. This prospective, multicenter study aimed at validating the diagnostic performance of a novel simple CT based fractional flow reserve (CT-FFR) calculation method in patients with coronary artery disease. METHODS: Patients who underwent coronary CT angiography (CCTA) within 90 days and invasive coronary angiography (ICA) were prospectively enrolled. A hemodynamically significant lesion was defined as an FFR ≤ 0.80, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was the primary measure. After the planned analysis for the initial algorithm A, we performed another set of exploratory analyses for an improved algorithm B. RESULTS: Of 184 patients who agreed to participate in the study, 151 were finally analyzed. Hemodynamically significant lesions were observed in 79 patients (52.3%). The AUC was 0.71 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.63-0.80) for CCTA, 0.65 (95% CI, 0.56-0.74) for CT-FFR algorithm A (P = 0.866), and 0.78 (95% CI, 0.70-0.86) for algorithm B (P = 0.112). Diagnostic accuracy was 0.63 (0.55-0.71) for CCTA alone, 0.66 (0.58-0.74) for algorithm A, and 0.76 (0.68-0.82) for algorithm B. CONCLUSION: This study suggests the feasibility of automated CT-FFR, which can be performed on-site within several hours. However, the diagnostic performance of the current algorithm does not meet the a priori criteria for superiority. Future research is required to improve the accuracy.

Captive fish populations, such as those encompassing aquarium and pet fish, offer significant economic value and are integral to conservation, research, and education. However, these ornamental fish exhibit a reduced ability to protect their ocular surfaces, and our understanding of the ocular diseases that affect them remains limited. Although corneal neoplasms in carp are uncommon, identifying their distinct characteristics is crucial in selecting appropriate therapeutic interventions that aim to preserve vision, prevent the ocular loss, and ultimately ensure the survival of the affected fish. This study provides clinical and histopathological details of various proliferative corneal masses in Cyprininae species, including five koi (Cyprinus carpio) and four goldfish (Carassius auratus). It discusses a spectrum of neoplasms, including soft tissue sarcoma, spindle cell sarcoma, chromatophoroma, and papilloma, in addition to conditions like exuberant granulation tissue and proliferative carp pox. These findings bear significant implications for clinical decision-making and treatment, offering valuable insights into the incidence and characteristics of corneal tumors in captive fish, which could inform further studies in this area.

Brain organoids are three-dimensional (3D) structures derived from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) that reflect early brain organization. These organoids contain different cell types, including neurons and glia, similar to those found in the human brain. Human brain organoids provide unique opportunities to model features of human brain development that are not well-reflected in animal models. Compared with traditional cell cultures and animal models, brain organoids offer a more accurate representation of human brain development and function, rendering them suitable models for neurodevelopmental diseases. In particular, brain organoids derived from patients' cells have enabled researchers to study diseases at different stages and gain a better understanding of disease mechanisms. Multi-brain regional assembloids allow for the investigation of interactions between distinct brain regions while achieving a higher level of consistency in molecular and functional characterization. Although organoids possess promising features, their usefulness is limited by several unresolved constraints, including cellular stress, hypoxia, necrosis, a lack of high-fidelity cell types, limited maturation, and circuit formation. In this review, we discuss studies to overcome the natural limitations of brain organoids, emphasizing the importance of combinations of all neural cell types, such as glia (astrocyte, oligodendrocytes, and microglia) and vascular cells. Additionally, considering the similarity of organoids to the developing brain, regionally patterned brain organoid-derived neural stem cells (NSCs) could serve as a scalable source for cell replacement therapy. We highlight the potential application of brain organoid-derived cells in disease cell therapy within this field.

Understanding marine bacterioplankton composition and distribution is necessary for improving predictions of ecosystem responses to environmental change. Here, we used 16S rRNA metabarcoding to investigate marine bacterioplankton diversity and identify potential pathogenic bacteria in seawater samples collected in March, May, September, and December 2013 from two sites near Jeju Island, South Korea. We identified 1343 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and observed that community diversity varied between months. Alpha- and Gamma-proteobacteria were the most abundant classes, and in all months, the predominant genera were Candidatus Pelagibacter, Leisingera, and Citromicrobium. The highest number of OTUs was observed in September, and Vibrio (7.80%), Pseudoalteromonas (6.53%), and Citromicrobium (6.16%) showed higher relative abundances or were detected only in this month. Water temperature and salinity significantly affected bacterial distribution, and these conditions, characteristic of September, were adverse for Aestuariibacter but favored Citromicrobium. Potentially pathogenic bacteria, among which Vibrio (28 OTUs) and Pseudoalteromonas (six OTUs) were the most abundant in September, were detected in 49 OTUs, and their abundances were significantly correlated with water temperature, increasing rapidly in September, the warmest month. These findings suggest that monthly temperature and salinity variations affect marine bacterioplankton diversity and potential pathogen abundance.

The pharmacological potential of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa) has been widely studied. However, the majority of studies have focused on cannabidiol, isolated from the inflorescence and leaf of the plant. In the present study, we evaluated the anti-diabetic potential of hemp root water (HWE) and ethanol extracts (HEE) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced insulin-deficient diabetic mice. The administration of HWE and HEE ameliorated hyperglycemia and improved glucose homeostasis and islet function in STZ-treated mice (p < 0.05). HWE and HEE suppressed ß-cell apoptosis and cytokine-induced inflammatory signaling in the pancreas (p < 0.05). Moreover, HWE and HEE normalized insulin-signaling defects in skeletal muscles and apoptotic response in the liver and kidney induced by STZ (p < 0.05). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of HWE and HEE showed possible active compounds which might be responsible for the observed anti-diabetic potential. These findings indicate the possible mechanisms by which hemp root extracts protect mice against insulin-deficient diabetes, and support the need for further studies geared towards the application of hemp root as a novel bioactive material.

Little research has investigated the long-term relationship between low wages and memory decline, despite the growing share of low-wage workers in the US labor market. Here, we examined whether cumulative exposure to low wages over 12 years in midlife is associated with memory decline in later life. Using 1992-2016 data from the Health and Retirement Study, we analyzed data from 2,879 individuals born in 1936-1941 using confounder-adjusted linear mixed-effects models. Low-wage work was defined as an hourly wage lower than two-thirds of the federal median wage for the corresponding year and was categorized into "never," "intermittent," and "sustained" based on wages earned from 1992 to 2004. Memory function was measured at each study visit from 2004 to 2016 via a memory composite score. The confounder-adjusted annual rate of memory decline among "never" low-wage earners was -0.12 standard units (95% confidence interval: -0.13, -0.10). Compared with this, memory decline among workers with sustained earning of low midlife wages was significantly faster (ßtime×sustained = -0.014, 95% confidence interval: -0.02, -0.01), corresponding to an annual rate of -0.13 standard units for this group. Sustained low-wage earning in midlife was significantly associated with a downward trajectory of memory performance in older age. Enhancing social policies to protect low-wage workers may be especially beneficial for their cognitive health.
