Common marmosets usually give birth to twins and form a social group consisting of a breeding couple and pairs of same-aged siblings. The twins may engage in the first agonistic fights between them, twin-fights (TFs), during adolescence. This study investigated the TFs based on records accumulated in our captive colony over 12 years to elucidate the proximate causations that trigger the TFs. We aimed to determine whether the TF onset mainly depended on internal events (such as the onset of puberty) as previously suggested or external events (such as the birth of the younger siblings and the behavioral change of the group members). Although both events usually occur simultaneously, the birth control method (i.e., manipulation of ovulation and interbirth-intervals by prostaglandin administration to females) could temporally separate these events. A comparison of the onset day and occurrence rate with or without the birth control procedure revealed that TFs were triggered by a combination of internal and external events, that is, external events were the predominant triggers of TF, under the influence of internal events. The timing of TF onset was significantly delayed when the birth of the younger siblings was delayed and the twins grew older under the birth-controlled condition, suggesting that the birth of younger siblings and related behavioral changes of group members, as well as twins' developmental maturation, could trigger TF. Higher TF rates between same-sex twins were consistent with previous studies, reflecting the characteristics of same-sex directed aggression in callitrichines.

Context dependency is a key feature in sequential structures of human language, which requires reference between words far apart in the produced sequence. Assessing how long the past context has an effect on the current status provides crucial information to understand the mechanism for complex sequential behaviors. Birdsongs serve as a representative model for studying the context dependency in sequential signals produced by non-human animals, while previous reports were upper-bounded by methodological limitations. Here, we newly estimated the context dependency in birdsongs in a more scalable way using a modern neural-network-based language model whose accessible context length is sufficiently long. The detected context dependency was beyond the order of traditional Markovian models of birdsong, but was consistent with previous experimental investigations. We also studied the relation between the assumed/auto-detected vocabulary size of birdsong (i.e., fine- vs. coarse-grained syllable classifications) and the context dependency. It turned out that the larger vocabulary (or the more fine-grained classification) is assumed, the shorter context dependency is detected.

Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is an essential diagnostic tool for various types of pancreatic diseases such as pancreatic tumors and chronic pancreatitis; however, EUS imaging has low specificity for the diagnosis of pancreatic diseases. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a mathematical prediction technique that automates learning and recognizes patterns in data. This review describes the details and principles of AI and deep learning algorithms. The term AI does not have any definite definition; almost all AI systems fall under narrow AI, which can handle single or limited tasks. Deep learning is based on neural networks, which is a machine learning technique that is widely used in the medical field. Deep learning involves three phases: data collection and annotation, building the deep learning architecture, and training and ability validation. For medical image diagnosis, image classification, object detection, and semantic segmentation are performed. In EUS, AI is used for detecting anatomical features, differential pancreatic tumors, and cysts. For this, conventional machine learning architectures are used, and deep learning architecture has been used in only two reports. Although the diagnostic abilities in these reports were about 85-95%, these were exploratory research and very few reports have included substantial evidence. AI is increasingly being used for medical image diagnosis due to its high performance and will soon become an essential technique for medical diagnosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although the technique of endoscopic ultrasound-guided choledochoduodenostomy (EUS-CDS) is becoming standardized, its safety issues have not been sufficiently investigated. Therefore, we aimed to identify factors associated with adverse events and stent patency in EUS-CDS. METHODS: Consecutive patients who underwent EUS-CDS between September 2003 and July 2017 were included. Technical/clinical success, adverse events and stent dysfunctions were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: A total of 151 patients underwent EUS-CDS. In nine patients, procedures were discontinued before puncture. Technical and clinical success rates were 96.5% (137/142) and 98.5% (135/137), respectively. The adverse event rate was 20.4% (29/142). As a risk factor for peritonitis, plastic stents (PS) showed a significantly high odds ratio (OR) compared with covered self-expandable metal stents (CSEMS; OR, 4.31; P = 0.030). CSEMS cases showed a significantly longer patency period than PS cases (329 vs 89 days; HR, 0.35; P < 0.001). As a risk factor for early stent dysfunction (within 14 days), stent direction to the oral side showed a significantly high OR (OR, 43.47; P < 0.001). In cases with oblique-viewing EUS, double penetration of the duodenum occurred at significantly higher frequency than in cases with forward-viewing EUS (7.0 vs 0.0%; P = 0.024). CONCLUSIONS: Plastic stents and stent direction to the oral side were risk factors for peritonitis and early stent dysfunction, respectively. Using covered self-expandable metal stents and changing stent direction to the anal side seemed appropriate to prevent peritonitis and early stent dysfunction.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: In chronic pancreatitis (CP) patients, diagnosis of small pancreatic lesions by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is challenging. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether CP influences the diagnostic ability of EUS-FNA for pancreatic lesions ≤10 mm. METHODS: One hundred and seventeen patients who underwent EUS-FNA for pancreatic lesions ≤10 mm in size were enrolled. Patients were classified into two groups based on features of CP observed by EUS (EUS-CP features) in accordance with the Rosemont classification. The CP group was defined as cases consistent with CP or suggestive of CP, and the non-CP group was defined as cases indeterminate for CP or normal. Factors influencing the diagnostic accuracy of EUS-FNA and CP status in pancreatic tumors were also investigated. RESULTS: Diagnostic ability of EUS-FNA (overall cases, non-CP vs CP) had sensitivity (80.4%, 96.7% vs 57.1%; P < 0.001), specificity (100%, 100% vs 100%; P > 0.05), and accuracy (91.5%, 98.6% vs 80.4%; P = 0.001). In multivariate analysis of factors influencing the accuracy of EUS-FNA, CP significantly lowered the accuracy (P = 0.048; odds ratio [OR] = 9.21). Among pancreatic cancer patients, the number of CP patients was significantly higher than the number of patients with benign lesions (P = 0.023). In multivariate analysis, lobularity without honeycombing was more frequently observed in cases of pancreatic cancer (P = 0.018; OR, 12.65). CONCLUSION: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided FNA offers high accuracy for small pancreatic lesions ≤10 mm. However, in cases with CP, the diagnostic ability of EUS-FNA is significantly reduced.

Although the call repertoire and its communicative function are relatively well explored in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), little empirical data are available on the physics and the physiology of this species' vocal production mechanism. Here, a 6 year old female Japanese macaque was trained to phonate under an operant conditioning paradigm. The resulting 'coo' calls and spontaneously uttered 'growl' and 'chirp' calls were recorded with sound pressure level (SPL) calibrated microphones and electroglottography (EGG), a non-invasive method for assessing the dynamics of phonation. A total of 448 calls were recorded, complemented by ex vivo recordings on an excised Japanese macaque larynx. In this novel multidimensional investigative paradigm, in vivo and ex vivo data were matched via comparable EGG waveforms. Subsequent analysis suggests that the vocal range (range of fundamental frequency and SPL) of the macaque was comparable to that of a 7-10 year old human, with the exception of low intensity chirps, the production of which may be facilitated by the species' vocal membranes. In coo calls, redundant control of fundamental frequency in relation to SPL was also comparable to that in humans. EGG data revealed that growls, coos and chirps were produced by distinct laryngeal vibratory mechanisms. EGG further suggested changes in the degree of vocal fold adduction in vivo, resulting in spectral variation within the emitted coo calls, ranging from 'breathy' (including aerodynamic noise components) to 'non-breathy'. This is again analogous to humans, corroborating the notion that phonation in humans and non-human primates is based on universal physical and physiological principles.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is difficult to detect in its early stages with the poorest prognosis of all cancers. To improve the prognosis, a precise diagnosis is needed when we suspect PDAC. Although endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy (EUS-FNA) is a widely accepted modality for the diagnosis of PDAC, its sensitivity is 85-89%, and approximately 10% of PDAC cases cannot be diagnosed. The main causes that interrupt the diagnosis of PDAC by using EUS-FNA are tumor size, presence of a vessel or the main pancreatic duct along the puncture route, and difficulty in withdrawing anticoagulant. Pancreatic juice cytology (PJC), the sensitivity of which is 33.3-65.8%, is a method for the diagnosis of PDAC cases in which carrying out of EUS-FNA is difficult. To diagnose PDAC appropriately, we need to improve the diagnostic ability of PJC. METHODS: We examined PJC using synthetic secretin for 138 cases of pancreatic tumor and pancreatic non-cancerous diseases. RESULTS: Sensitivity of PJC improved from 50.9% to 74.0% as a result of synthetic secretin loading, and 13 PDAC cases that had not been able to be diagnosed with EUS-FNA could be diagnosed pathologically by PJC. Although there were 12 patients with mild pancreatitis (8.7%) as a complication, all were relieved with conservative treatment. CONCLUSION: Adding synthetic secretin to PJC is useful for cases in which it is difficult to carry out EUS-FNA for PDAC.

OBJECTIVES: Speech is unique to humans and characterized by facial actions of ∼5 Hz oscillations of lip, mouth or jaw movements. Lip-smacking, a facial display of primates characterized by oscillatory actions involving the vertical opening and closing of the jaw and lips, exhibits stable 5-Hz oscillation patterns, matching that of speech, suggesting that lip-smacking is a precursor of speech. We tested if facial or vocal actions exhibiting the same rate of oscillation are found in wide forms of facial or vocal displays in various social contexts, exhibiting diversity among species. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We observed facial and vocal actions of wild stump-tailed macaques (Macaca arctoides), and selected video clips including facial displays (teeth chattering; TC), panting calls, and feeding. Ten open-to-open mouth durations during TC and feeding and five amplitude peak-to-peak durations in panting were analyzed. RESULTS: Facial display (TC) and vocalization (panting) oscillated within 5.74 ± 1.19 and 6.71 ± 2.91 Hz, respectively, similar to the reported lip-smacking of long-tailed macaques and the speech of humans. DISCUSSION: These results indicated a common mechanism for the central pattern generator underlying orofacial movements, which would evolve to speech. Similar oscillations in panting, which evolved from different muscular control than the orofacial action, suggested the sensory foundations for perceptual saliency particular to 5-Hz rhythms in macaques. This supports the pre-adaptation hypothesis of speech evolution, which states a central pattern generator for 5-Hz facial oscillation and perceptual background tuned to 5-Hz actions existed in common ancestors of macaques and humans, before the emergence of speech.

Vocal repertoires are basic and essential components for describing vocal communication in animals. Studying the entire suite of vocal signals aids investigations on the variation of acoustic structure across social contexts, comparisons on the complexity of communication systems across taxa, and in exploration of the evolutionary origins of species-specific vocalizations. Here, we describe the vocal repertoire of the largest species in the macaque genus, Macaca thibetana. We extracted thirty acoustic parameters from call recordings. Post hoc validation through quantitative analyses of the a priori repertoire classified eleven call types: coo, squawk, squeal, noisy scream, growl, bark, compound squeak, leap coo, weeping, modulated tonal scream, and pant. In comparison to the rest of the genus, Tibetan macaques uttered a wider array of vocalizations in the context of copulations. Previous reports did not include modulated tonal screams and pants during harassment of copulatory dyads. Furthermore, in comparison to the rest of the genus, Tibetan macaque females emit acoustically distinct copulation calls. The vocal repertoire of Tibetan macaques contributes to the literature on the emergence of species-specific calls in the genus Macaca with potential insights from social, reproductive, and ecological comparisons across species. Whistle-like high-pitched "phee" calls are often used as long-distance vocal advertisements by small-bodied marmosets and tamarins in the dense forests of South America. While the source-filter theory proposes that vibration of the vocal fold is modified independently from the resonance of the supralaryngeal vocal tract (SVT) in human speech, a source-filter coupling that constrains the vibration frequency to SVT resonance effectively produces loud tonal sounds in some musical instruments. Here, a combined approach of acoustic analyses and simulation with helium-modulated voices was used to show that phee calls are produced principally with the same mechanism as in human speech. The animal keeps the fundamental frequency (f0) close to the first formant (F1) of the SVT, to amplify f0. Although f0 and F1 are primarily independent, the degree of their tuning can be strengthened further by a flexible source-filter interaction, the variable strength of which depends upon the cross-sectional area of the laryngeal cavity. The results highlight the evolutionary antiquity and universality of the source-filter model in primates, but the study can also explore the diversification of vocal physiology, including source-filter interaction and its anatomical basis in non-human primates.

Objective Abdominal ultrasonography (AUS) is used to screen for abdominal diseases owing to its low cost, safety, and accessibility. However, the detection rate of pancreatic disease using AUS is unsatisfactory. We evaluated the visualization area of the pancreas and the efficacy of manipulation techniques for AUS with fusion imaging. Methods Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) volume data were obtained from 20 healthy volunteers in supine and right lateral positions. The MRI volume data were transferred to an ultrasound machine equipped with a fusion imaging software program. We evaluated the visualization area of the pancreas before and after postural changes using AUS with fusion imaging and assessed the liquid-filled stomach method using 500 ml of de-aerated water in 10 randomly selected volunteers. Patients This study included 20 healthy volunteers (19 men and 1 woman) with a mean age of 33.0 (21-37.5) years old. Results Fusion imaging revealed that the visualization area of the entire pancreas using AUS was 55%, which significantly improved to 75% with a postural change and 90% when using the liquid-filled stomach method (p=0.043). Gastrointestinal gas is the main obstacle for visualization of the pancreas. Conclusion Fusion imaging objectively demonstrated that manipulation techniques can improve pancreatic visualization.

(1) Background: There is controversy regarding stent placement for unresectable malignant hilar biliary obstruction (UMHBO). We mainly use the partial stent-in-stent (PSIS) method with an uncovered self-expandable metallic stent (UCSEMS) based on the drainage area and patency period. In this study, we investigated the usefulness and safety of the PSIS method. (2) Methods: In total, 59 patients who underwent the PSIS method for UMHBO at our hospital were included in the study. The technical success rate, clinical success rate, time to recurrent biliary obstruction (TRBO) and overall survival (OS) from the first placement, factors affecting TRBO and OS, and early complications within 30 days after the procedure were evaluated retrospectively. (3) Results: The technical and clinical success rates were 100% and 96.6%, respectively, with a TRBO of 121 days [95% confidence interval: 82-231] and an OS of 194 days [95% confidence interval: 113-305] after the first placement. Early complications occurred in nine patients (15.3%), including five cases of cholangitis, three cases of pancreatitis, and one case of cholecystitis. (4) Conclusions: The PSIS method for UMHBO is safe and useful with high technical and clinical success rates.

Inferring the latent structures of social organisations is a central theme in animal ecology. Sophisticated theoretical frameworks underpin the study of various primate social systems. Single-file movements, defined as serially ordered patterns of animals, reflect intra-group social relationships and provide a key to understanding social structures. Here, we analysed automated camera-trapping data on the order of progression of single-file movements in a free-ranging group of stump-tailed macaques to estimate the social structure of the group. The sequence of single file movements showed some regularities, particularly for adult males. Social network analysis identified four community clusters (subgroups) corresponding to the social structures reported for these stumptailed macaques, i.e. males that had copulated more frequently with females were spatially clustered with females, but males that had copulated less frequently were spatially isolated from females. Our results suggest that stumptailed macaques move in regular, socially determined patterns that reflect the spatial positions of adult males and are related to the social organisation of the species.

Jaundice is caused by excess circulating bilirubin, known as hyperbilirubinemia. This symptom is sometimes caused by a critical hepatobiliary disorder, and is generally identified as yellowish sclera when bilirubin levels increase more than 3 mg/dL. It is difficult to identify jaundice accurately, especially via telemedicine. This study aimed to identify and quantify jaundice by trans-conjunctiva optical imaging. Patients with jaundice (total bilirubin ≥3 mg/dL) and normal control subjects (total bilirubin <3 mg/dL) were prospectively enrolled from June 2021 to July 2022. We took bilateral conjunctiva imaging with a built-in camera on a smartphone (1st generation iPhone SE) under normal white light conditions without any restrictions. We processed the images using an Algorithm Based on Human Brain (ABHB) (Zeta Bridge Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) and converted them into a hue degree of Hue Saturation Lightness (HSL) color space. A total of 26 patients with jaundice (9.57 ± 7.11 mg/dL) and 25 control subjects (0.77 ± 0.35 mg/dL) were enrolled in this study. The causes of jaundice among the 18 male and 8 female subjects (median age 61 yrs.) included hepatobiliary cancer (n = 10), chronic hepatitis or cirrhosis (n = 6), pancreatic cancer (n = 4), acute liver failure (n = 2), cholelithiasis or cholangitis (n = 2), acute pancreatitis (n = 1), and Gilbert's syndrome (n = 1). The maximum hue degree (MHD) optimal cutoff to identify jaundice was 40.8 (sensitivity 81% and specificity 80%), and the AUROC was 0.842. The MHD was moderately correlated to total serum bilirubin (TSB) levels (rS = 0.528, p < 0.001). TSB level (≥5 mg/dL) can be estimated by the formula 21.1603 - 0.7371 × 56.3-MHD2. In conclusion, the ABHB-based MHD of conjunctiva imaging identified jaundice using an ordinary smartphone without any specific attachments and deep learning. This novel technology could be a helpful diagnostic tool in telemedicine or self-medication.

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle biopsy (EUS-FNB) is a common technique for diagnosing pancreatic lesions with high accuracy and a low incidence of procedural adverse events. However, occasional adverse events, particularly bleeding, may occur. Procedures for hypervascular lesions are considered important, but their risks are unknown. We aimed to evaluate the safety and diagnostic yield of EUS-FNB for hypervascular pancreatic solid lesions. This study included 301 patients with 308 solid pancreatic lesions who underwent EUS-FNB between May 2011 and December 2018. We performed propensity-score matching to balance clinical differences between hypervascular and hypovascular lesions and analyzed 52 lesions. We compared the safety and diagnostic performance of propensity score-matched cohorts. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy rates of EUS-FNB for hypervascular lesions were 94.7%, 100%, and 96.2%, and those for hypovascular lesions were 80.0%, 100%, and 84.6%, respectively. There was no difference in diagnostic performance between hypervascular and hypovascular lesions. Furthermore, adverse events occurred in only one patient (pancreatitis) in the hypovascular group. There were no significant differences in the occurrence of adverse events between hypervascular and hypovascular lesions (0% vs. 3.8%, p = 1.000). Therefore, EUS-FNB may be safe with a high diagnostic yield, even for hypervascular solid pancreatic lesions.

Pathological examination by endoscopic ultrasound-fine needle aspiration is not possible in approximately 10% of pancreatic tumor cases. Pancreatic juice cytology (PJC) is considered an alternative diagnostic method. However, its diagnostic capability is insufficient, and PJC has been repeatedly redevised. Serial pancreatic juice aspiration cytological examination (SPACE) and secretin-loaded PJC (S-PJC) have been recently introduced as alternative diagnostic methods. This study aimed to determine the diagnostic capacity and safety of SPACE and S-PJC using a propensity score-matched analysis. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were 75.0%, 100%, and 92.3% for S-PJC, respectively, and 71.4%, 100%, and 92.3% for SPACE, respectively, meaning that there was no significant difference between the groups. Four patients (15.4%) each in the S-PJC and SPACE groups experienced complications, including postendoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, pancreatitis, and cholangitis. Overall, there was no difference in efficacy and safety between the SPACE and S-PJC groups.

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is an essential endoscopic tissue sampling method for diagnosing pancreatobiliary diseases; however, determining the presence of target specimens mixed in the blood by conventional observation is challenging due to the small size of the obtained sample. This study investigated the usefulness of a target sample check illuminator (TSCI) that emits a specific wavelength of light to determine the presence of target specimens. Twenty-seven patients who underwent EUS-FNA at our hospital were included. Conventional white light observation was performed for the collected samples, followed by TSCI; six people evaluated the presence of the target specimen on a 5-point scale. The target specimen discrimination score using TSCI (median: 5) was significantly higher than that using conventional white light observation (median: 1) (p < 0.001). No significant difference was observed in the discrimination score between the evaluator (novice vs. expert, p = 0.162) and puncture needle (22G vs. 25G, p = 0.196). The discriminability of TSCI in the samples obtained using EUS-FNA was significantly higher than that of conventional observation. TSCI does not depend on the evaluator or puncture needle for the identification of the target specimen; hence, it can provide a good pathological specimen and may contribute to the improvement of the diagnostic ability.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS)-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy (EUS-FNB) enhances the diagnostic capabilities of EUS by providing additional pathological samples. However, detecting the target specimens within the collected samples can be challenging. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal wavelength of light for detection of target specimens within EUS-FNB samples in an animal experiment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: EUS-FNB pancreatic tissue samples were collected from a male beagle (weight, 10 kg), and the samples were illuminated with monochromatic light ranging from 430 to 700 nm in 5-nm intervals. The intensities of the target specimen and blood samples were analyzed using the densitometry of the images obtained through irradiation. RESULTS: We found that transmitted monochromatic light of 605 nm most vividly enhanced the contrast between the target specimens and blood in the samples in the impression of appearance. CONCLUSION: Thus, microscopical observations under transmitted light of 605 nm are optimal for target tissue identification within EUS-FNB samples.
