BACKGROUND: Pediatric Burkitt lymphoma (pBL) is the most common non-Hodgkin lymphoma in children. These patients require prompt diagnosis and initiation of therapy due to rapid tumor growth. The roles of tumor tissue and circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) in the diagnosis or prognostication have not been fully elucidated in pBLs. METHODS: Differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs were identified with microRNA sequencing (miRNA-Seq) in tumor tissues and plasma of diagnostic pBLs. The diagnostic potential of total miRNA concentrations and overexpressed miRNAs were evaluated through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses. Log-rank test was employed to evaluate survival differences associated with DE miRNAs. Selected miRNA expressions were cross-validated with quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR). RESULTS: Total circulating cell-free miRNAs were higher in pBL cases compared to controls. Cancer-associated pathways were enriched among miRNAs differentially expressed in pBL tumor tissues. Several upregulated miRNAs in pBL tumors demonstrated high diagnostic potential. Similarly, ROC analysis of overexpressed plasma miRNAs revealed circulating cell-free or exosomal miRNAs that can distinguish pBLs from control cases. Indeed, integrative analysis of overexpressed circulating exosomal miRNAs showed an enhanced diagnostic potential for certain triple combinations. Kaplan-Meier analyses of DE miRNAs in tumor tissues identified miRNAs predicting overall survival. CONCLUSIONS: Differentially expressed miRNAs in tumor tissue and plasma of pBL have the potential to improve diagnosis and prognosis. IMPACT: Differentially expressed miRNAs in treatment-naive pediatric Burkitt lymphoma cases have diagnostic or prognostic biomarker potential. This is the first study that applied miRNA-Seq on treatment-naive pediatric Burkitt lymphoma cases for identification of differentially expressed miRNAs both in tumor tissue and plasma samples with diagnostic potential. Through systematic analysis of differentially expressed miRNAs, tumor tissue miRNAs associated with the overall survival of pBLs have been discovered. The clinically significant, differentially expressed miRNAs identified in pediatric Burkitt lymphoma cases can potentially improve the current tissue-based or non-invasive clinical practice in terms of diagnosis or prognostication.

Esophageal carcinoma in children and adolescents is extremely rare. Here, we report 2 cases of pediatric esophageal carcinoma presenting with progressive dysphagia. There was not any underlying specific risk factor in our cases. The histopathological subtypes were adenocarcinoma in one and squamous cell carcinoma in another case. Response to combined modality treatment was good in the case of adenocarcinoma, while the patient with squamous cell carcinoma was unresponsive to treatment and died of the progressive disease. We reviewed the pediatric cases of esophageal carcinoma reported in the literature. Progressive dysphagia was observed in 89% of these cases. One third of pediatric cases had underlying risk factors. Squamous cell carcinoma is a more common type of childhood esophageal carcinoma. In contrast to adults, pediatric esophageal squamous cell carcinoma may distribute throughout the esophagus. Esophageal adenocarcinoma was seen in the distal esophagus in pediatric cases. Metastatic disease was found in 48% of pediatric patients at presentation, and the prognosis is poor. Collaborative efforts are needed for success in the treatment of esophageal carcinoma.

AIM: To evaluate the treatment results, prognostic parameters, and treatment-related toxicity in patients with Ewing sarcoma (ES)/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of the chest wall who underwent surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy (RT) in a tertiary referral center. METHODS: The data of 24 patients under 18 years of age with a histologic diagnosis of ES/PNET in the chest wall that received RT in our department between February 2003 and July 2020 were retrospectively evaluated. RT was applied to the primary site±whole involved chest wall and to the whole lung in patients with lung metastasis. RESULTS: The median age was 8.5 years (range: 1.5 to 17 y), 15 (63%) patients were female and 9 were male (37%). The tumor localization was extrathoracic in 18 (75%) and intrathoracic in 6 (25%) patients. Mediastinal lymph node and distant metastasis (DM) was present in 5 (21%) and 4 (16%) cases at diagnosis, respectively. The median follow-up after RT was 47 months (range: 11 to 162 mo). The 2-year and 5-year overall survival, event-free survival, local recurrence-free survival, and pleural recurrence-free survival were 83% and 48%, 48% and 42%, 74% and 48%, and 61% and 52%, respectively. The overall local control rate was 83% and the pleural control rate was 67%. RT was well tolerated, with 1 case of grade 3 acute dermatitis and 1 case of grade 3 subacute radiation pneumonitis. Late toxicity was observed in 3 (13%) cases. CONCLUSION: Long-term survival can be achieved with extended-field RT even in patients with ES/PNET of the chest wall with DM. The low toxicity rates allow us to draw the conclusion that RT with modern techniques is an effective and safe treatment modality for these patients.

Cancer research is a crucial pillar for countries to deliver more affordable, higher quality, and more equitable cancer care. Patients treated in research-active hospitals have better outcomes than patients who are not treated in these settings. However, cancer in Europe is at a crossroads. Cancer was already a leading cause of premature death before the COVID-19 pandemic, and the disastrous effects of the pandemic on early diagnosis and treatment will probably set back cancer outcomes in Europe by almost a decade. Recognising the pivotal importance of research not just to mitigate the pandemic today, but to build better European cancer services and systems for patients tomorrow, the Lancet Oncology European Groundshot Commission on cancer research brings together a wide range of experts, together with detailed new data on cancer research activity across Europe during the past 12 years. We have deployed this knowledge to help inform Europe's Beating Cancer Plan and the EU Cancer Mission, and to set out an evidence-driven, patient-centred cancer research roadmap for Europe. The high-resolution cancer research data we have generated show current activities, captured through different metrics, including by region, disease burden, research domain, and effect on outcomes. We have also included granular data on research collaboration, gender of researchers, and research funding. The inclusion of granular data has facilitated the identification of areas that are perhaps overemphasised in current cancer research in Europe, while also highlighting domains that are underserved. Our detailed data emphasise the need for more information-driven and data-driven cancer research strategies and planning going forward. A particular focus must be on central and eastern Europe, because our findings emphasise the widening gap in cancer research activity, and capacity and outcomes, compared with the rest of Europe. Citizens and patients, no matter where they are, must benefit from advances in cancer research. This Commission also highlights that the narrow focus on discovery science and biopharmaceutical research in Europe needs to be widened to include such areas as prevention and early diagnosis; treatment modalities such as radiotherapy and surgery; and a larger concentration on developing a research and innovation strategy for the 20 million Europeans living beyond a cancer diagnosis. Our data highlight the important role of comprehensive cancer centres in driving the European cancer research agenda. Crucial to a functioning cancer research strategy and its translation into patient benefit is the need for a greater emphasis on health policy and systems research, including implementation science, so that the innovative technological outputs from cancer research have a clear pathway to delivery. This European cancer research Commission has identified 12 key recommendations within a call to action to reimagine cancer research and its implementation in Europe. We hope this call to action will help to achieve our ambitious 70:35 target: 70% average 10-year survival for all European cancer patients by 2035.

PURPOSE: In the absence of a standardized tool to assess the quality of pediatric hematology/oncology training programs, the Education Program Assessment Tool (EPAT) was conceptualized as a user-friendly and adaptable tool to evaluate and identify areas of opportunity, pinpoint needed modifications, and monitor progress for training programs around the world. METHODS: The development of EPAT consisted of three main phases: operationalization, consensus, and piloting. After each phase, the tool was iteratively modified based on feedback to improve its relevance, usability, and clarity. RESULTS: The operationalization process led to the development of 10 domains with associated assessment questions. The two-step consensus phase included an internal consensus phase to validate the domains and a subsequent external consensus phase to refine the domains and overall function of the tool. EPAT domains for programmatic evaluation are hospital infrastructure, patient care, education infrastructure, program basics, clinical exposure, theory, research, evaluation, educational culture, and graduate impact. EPAT was piloted in five training programs in five countries, representing diverse medical training and patient care contexts for proper validation of the tool. Face validity was confirmed by a correlation between the perceived and calculated scores for each domain (r = 0.78, p < .0001). CONCLUSIONS: EPAT was developed following a systematic approach, ultimately leading to a relevant tool to evaluate the different core elements of pediatric hematology/oncology training programs across the world. With EPAT, programs will have a tool to quantitatively evaluate their training, allowing for benchmarking with centers at the local, regional, and international level.

The purpose of the study was to review the clinical and pathologic characteristics and treatment results of children with precursor B-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma. Of 530 children diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphomas between 2000 and 2021, 39 (7.4%) were identified as having precursor B-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma. Clinical characteristics, pathologic, radiologic, laboratory data, treatments, responses, and overall outcomes were recorded from hospital files and analyzed. The median age of 39 patients (males/females, 23/16) was 8.3 years (range 1.3 to 16.1). The most common sites of involvement were the lymph nodes. At a median follow-up of 55.8 months, 14 patients (35%) had a recurrence of disease (11 stage IV, 3 stage III); 4 were in complete remission with salvage therapies, 9 died of progressive disease and one died due to febrile neutropenia. Five-year event-free survival and overall survival rates were 65.4% and 78.3% for all cases, respectively. Survival rates were higher in patients with a complete remission at the end of induction therapies. The survival rates were lower in our study compared with other studies, which could be explained by the high relapse rate and higher incidence of advanced-stage disease due to bone marrow involvement. We demonstrated a prognostic impact of treatment response at the end of the induction phase. Cases with a disease relapse have poor prognosis.

INTRODUCTION: Standards for chemotherapy against choroid plexus tumors (CPT) have not yet been established. METHODS: CPT-SIOP-2000 (NCT00500890) was an international registry for all CPT nesting a chemotherapy randomization for high-risk CPT with Carboplatin/Etoposide/Vincristine (CarbEV) versus Cyclophosphamide/Etoposide/Vincristine (CycEV). Patients older than three years were recommended to receive irradiation: focal fields for non-metastatic CPC, incompletely resected atypical choroid plexus papilloma (APP) or metastatic choroid plexus papilloma (CPP); craniospinal fields for metastatic CPC/APP and non-responsive CPC. High risk was defined as choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC), incompletely resected APP, and all metastatic CPT. From 2000 until 2010, 158 CPT patients from 23 countries were enrolled. RESULTS: For randomized CPC, the 5/10 year progression free survival (PFS) of patients on CarbEV (n = 20) were 62%/47%, respectively, compared to 27%/18%, on CycEV (n = 15), (intention-to-treat, HR 2.6, p = 0.032). Within the registry, histological grading was the most influential prognostic factor: for CPP (n = 55) the 5/10 year overall survival (OS) and the event free survival (EFS) probabilities were 100%/97% and 92%/92%, respectively; for APP (n = 49) 96%/96% and 76%/76%, respectively; and for CPC (n = 54) 65%/51% and 41%/39%, respectively. Without irradiation, 12 out of 33 patients with CPC younger than three years were alive for a median of 8.52 years. Extent of surgery and metastases were not independent prognosticators. CONCLUSIONS: Chemotherapy for Choroid Plexus Carcinoma is feasible and effective. CarbEV is superior to CycEV. A subset of CPC can be cured without irradiation.

PURPOSE: Postoperative period after abdominal solid tumor surgery is critical regarding complications. This study aimed to detect incidence and treatment of complications. METHODS: Single center retrospective study including years 2010-2019 for early postoperative complications were documented and graded according to Clavian-Dindo classification. RESULTS: The overall complication rate was 10% and they were chylous leak (n = 8, 2%), collection in surgical field (n = 8, 2%), acute renal failure (n = 7, 1.7%), hemorrhage (n = 5, 1.3%), intestinal obstruction (n = 4, 1%), surgical site infection (n = 3, 0.7%), thromboembolism (n = 3, 0.7%) and peripheric neuronal event (n = 2, 0.5%). Distribution of complications according to Clavian-Dindo classification was as follows: 2 grade I, 23 grade II, 9 grade IIIb, 5 grade IVa and 1 grade V. While age and percentage of benign or malignant disease were not different in groups with or without complications (p = 0.11, p = 0.24), males had more complications than female patients (p = 0.008). Having more than one surgery aiming tumor resection was associated with increased postoperative complications (p = 0.002). Incidence of complications were highest after extragonadal germ cell tumor (35%) and hepatic tumors (29%). CONCLUSIONS: Postoperative complications of abdominal tumor surgery are diverse in children. They are related with prolonged hospital stay and need for medical or surgical interventions. Number of surgeries, organ of origin and tumor type have an influence on risk of complications.

Primary paraspinal/spinal epidural lymphoma (PPSEL) is rare in childhood. Here, we retrospectively evaluated patients with PPSEL treated in our department. We also reviewed the cases reported in the literature. Fifteen of 1354 non-Hodgkin lymphoma cases diagnosed over a 38-year period were PPSEPL. There were 11 male individuals and 4 female individuals with a median age of 13 years. Most common symptoms were pain and limb weakness. Physical examination revealed spinal cord compression in 80% of patients. The most common tumor location was the lumbar region. Histopathologic subtypes were lymphoblastic lymphoma in 6 and Burkitt lymphom in 5 patients. Subtotal or near-total excision of the tumor with laminectomy was performed in 6 patients. Thirteen and 9 patients received chemotherapy and radiotherapy, respectively. Neurologic recovery was observed in 70% of patients. Seven patients were alive without disease at a median of 88 months. Overall and event-free survival rates were 61.7% and 50.1%, respectively. We reviewed clinical features, treatment, and outcome of 69 PPSEL cases reported in the literature. Neurologic recovery and long-term survival was achieved in 66.7% of them. Heterogeneity in diagnostic methods and treatment have made it difficult to establish the prognostic indicators for neurologic outcome and survival. Multicenter prospective studies with more cases are necessary to determine the prognostic factors.

BACKGROUND: Cancer represents a substantial health burden for refugees and host countries. However, no reliable data on the costs of cancer care for refugees are available, which limits the planning of official development assistance in humanitarian settings. We aimed to model the direct costs of cancer care among Syrian refugee populations residing in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey. METHODS: In this population-based modelling study, direct cost per capita and per incident case for cancer care were estimated using generalised linear models, informed by a representative dataset of cancer costs drawn from 27 EU countries. A range of regression specifications were tested, in which cancer costs were modelled using different independent variables: gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, crude or age-standardised incidence, crude or age-standardised mortality, and total host country population size. Models were compared using the Akaike information criterion. Total cancer care costs for Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey were calculated by multiplying the estimated direct cancer care costs (per capita) by the total number of Syrian refugees, or by multiplying the estimated direct cancer costs (per incident case [crude or age-standardised]) by the number of incident cancer cases in Syrian refugee populations. All costs are expressed in 2017 euros (€). FINDINGS: Total cancer care costs for all 4·74 million Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey in 2017 were estimated to be €140·23 million using the cost per capita approach, €79·02 million using the age-standardised incidence approach, and €33·68 million using the crude incidence approach. Under the lowest estimation, and with GDP and total country population as model predictors, the financial burden of cancer care was highest for Turkey (€25·18 million), followed by Lebanon (€6·40 million), and then Jordan (€2·09 million). INTERPRETATION: Cancer among the Syrian refugee population represents a substantial financial burden for host countries and humanitarian agencies, such as the UN Refugee Agency. New ways to provide financial assistance need to be found and must be coupled with clear, prioritised pathways and models of care for refugees with cancer. Population-based cancer registries (PBCRs) generate measures of cancer incidence and survival that are essential for cancer surveillance, research, and cancer control strategies. In 2014, the Toronto Paediatric Cancer Stage Guidelines were developed to standardise how PBCRs collect data on the stage at diagnosis for childhood cancer cases. These guidelines have been implemented in multiple jurisdictions worldwide to facilitate international comparative studies of incidence and outcome. Robust stratification by risk also requires data on key non-stage prognosticators (NSPs). Key experts and stakeholders used a modified Delphi approach to establish principles guiding paediatric cancer NSP data collection. With the use of these principles, recommendations were made on which NSPs should be collected for the major malignancies in children. The 2014 Toronto Stage Guidelines were also reviewed and updated where necessary. Wide adoption of the resultant Paediatric NSP Guidelines and updated Toronto Stage Guidelines will enhance the harmonisation and use of childhood cancer data provided by PBCRs.

We estimate that there will be 13·7 million new cases of childhood cancer globally between 2020 and 2050. At current levels of health system performance (including access and referral), 6·1 million (44·9%) of these children will be undiagnosed. Between 2020 and 2050, 11·1 million children will die from cancer if no additional investments are made to improve access to health-care services or childhood cancer treatment. Of this total, 9·3 million children (84·1%) will be in low-income and lower-middle-income countries. This burden could be vastly reduced with new funding to scale up cost-effective interventions. Simultaneous comprehensive scale-up of interventions could avert 6·2 million deaths in children with cancer in this period, more than half (56·1%) of the total number of deaths otherwise projected. Taking excess mortality risk into consideration, this reduction in the number of deaths is projected to produce a gain of 318 million life-years. In addition, the global lifetime productivity gains of US$2580 billion in 2020-50 would be four times greater than the cumulative treatment costs of $594 billion, producing a net benefit of $1986 billion on the global investment: a net return of $3 for every $1 invested. In sum, the burden of childhood cancer, which has been grossly underestimated in the past, can be effectively diminished to realise massive health and economic benefits and to avert millions of needless deaths.

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer is a highly curable disease when timely diagnosis and appropriate therapy are provided. A negative impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on access to care for children with cancer is likely but has not been evaluated. METHODS: A 34-item survey focusing on barriers to pediatric oncology management during the COVID-19 pandemic was distributed to heads of pediatric oncology units within the Pediatric Oncology East and Mediterranean (POEM) collaborative group, from the Middle East, North Africa, and West Asia. Responses were collected on April 11 through 22, 2020. Corresponding rates of proven COVID-19 cases and deaths were retrieved from the World Health Organization database. RESULTS: In total, 34 centers from 19 countries participated. Almost all centers applied guidelines to optimize resource utilization and safety, including delaying off-treatment visits, rotating and reducing staff, and implementing social distancing, hand hygiene measures, and personal protective equipment use. Essential treatments, including chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy, were delayed in 29% to 44% of centers, and 24% of centers restricted acceptance of new patients. Clinical care delivery was reported as negatively affected in 28% of centers. Greater than 70% of centers reported shortages in blood products, and 47% to 62% reported interruptions in surgery and radiation as well as medication shortages. However, bed availability was affected in <30% of centers, reflecting the low rates of COVID-19 hospitalizations in the corresponding countries at the time of the survey. CONCLUSIONS: Mechanisms to approach childhood cancer treatment delivery during crises need to be re-evaluated, because treatment interruptions and delays are expected to affect patient outcomes in this otherwise largely curable disease.

Gastrointestinal tract is the most common extranodal site for childhood non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs). However, primary gastric lymphoma (PGL) is very rare. We report our experience with PGL. Between 1972 and 2019, patients with PGL among 1696 NHL cases were evaluated retrospectively. Patient characteristics, treatments, and survival rates were recorded. We also reviewed the cases reported in literature. There were 16 PGL (11 males, five females) cases with a median age of 10 years. Most frequent complaints, similarly to the literature, were pain and vomiting. Hematemesis/melena and anemia were present in 20% of patients. Most common tumor location was antrum. Histopathological subtypes were Burkitt and non-Burkitt B-cell lymphoma in 43.75% and marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) in 6.25% of cases while mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) and low-grade lymphomas constitute 15.3% of cases reported in the literature. In our series, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) was analyzed in only the case with MZL and found to be positive. However, H. pylori positivity was reported in 75% of the cases in the literature. H. pylori eradication, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy were applied in one, 14, and five patients. Subtotal gastrectomy with gastroduodenostomy/jejunostomy was performed in three patients. Gastrojejunostomy was done without tumor resection in two patients. Nine patients lived without disease for a median of 59 (12-252) months. Five-year EFS and OS were 69.6% and 64.3%, respectively. PGL constitutes 0.94% of our NHL cases. Interestingly, most of the cases in the literature were from Turkey. While adult PGL is mostly MALT lymphoma, most pediatric cases had high-grade histopathology. Although surgery and radiotherapy were applied earlier, chemotherapy alone is sufficient.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The outcome of Burkitt lymphoma has improved by over 90%. In this study, demographic characteristics and outcomes of 57 patients with Burkitt lymphoma treated with FAB LMB 96 regimen are presented. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Standard intensity arms were selected for all risk groups. Clinical characteristics, response to treatment, and outcome were evaluated. RESULTS: The median age of 48 boys and 9 girls was 8.2 years. There were 2 (3%), 41 (72%), and 14 (25%) patients in the low, intermediate, and high-risk groups, respectively. Patients were followed-up for a median of 50 months. The 5-year overall survival and event-free survival rates for the study group were 90.8% and 87.4%, respectively. Two patients in the low-risk group are still alive without evidence of disease for 17 and 57 months. The 5-year overall survival rates were 95% and 78% for intermediate and high-risk patients, and the 5-year event-free survival rates were 93% and 62%, respectively. At the end of induction, 58% of patients had complete response, and 42% (n=24) had residual tumors. A total of 16 of 24 patient biopsies showed no viable tumors. CONCLUSIONS: Our results confirm the previously published survival results of FAB LMB 96. The regimen is an effective regimen for mature B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma without radiotherapy or surgery even in central nervous system-positive patients. The most important prognostic factor is the complete response after induction chemotherapy. However, residual tumor at the end of consolidation might not always be a sign for unresponsive tumor. Tumoral residue should be radiologically well evaluated and biopsied if possible for viability before intensifying treatment.

Breast and cervical cancer are major threats to the health of women globally, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries. Radical progress to close the global cancer divide for women requires not only evidence-based policy making, but also broad multisectoral collaboration that capitalises on recent progress in the associated domains of women's health and innovative public health approaches to cancer care and control. Such multisectoral collaboration can serve to build health systems for cancer, and more broadly for primary care, surgery, and pathology. This Series paper explores the global health and public policy landscapes that intersect with women's health and global cancer control, with new approaches to bringing policy to action. Cancer is a major global social and political priority, and women's cancers are not only a tractable socioeconomic policy target in themselves, but also an important Trojan horse to drive improved cancer control and care.

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign bone tumor. Curettage and bone grafting is the common treatment. Here, we retrospectively evaluate nine patients treated with denosumab. PROCEDURE: Nine patients with ABC, mostly pelvic and vertebral, treated with denosumab were analyzed retrospectively. A 70 mg/m2 denosumab dose was used weekly in the first month, and then monthly. Clinical and radiological responses to treatment were evaluated. RESULTS: In all patients, clinical symptoms including pain and limping regressed completely within 3 months. Radiological evaluation revealed changes in lesion size and content. In six patients, overall volume reduction in the range of 18-82% was detected. Decreases in the size and number of cysts were detected in eight patients. In five patients, fat signal appeared on follow-up imaging. No major side effects were observed during treatment. Median follow-up time after treatment was 15 months. At 5 months, severe hypercalcemia was observed in two patients due to rebound increase in osteoclastic activity. Subsequent to denosumab treatment, three patients underwent surgery for clinical or radiological recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed that denosumab provided a meaningful clinical and radiological improvement in ABC. It may be a treatment option, especially in spinal and pelvic tumors with potentially high surgical morbidity. However, late rebound hypercalcemia may restrict its use. Studies with more cases are required for routine use of denosumab in ABC.

RESUMO

Ureteral extension of Wilms tumor (WT) is a rare occasion. The association of duplex collecting system and WT is extremely rare. Ureteral extension of WT in a duplex collecting system is an unreported entity to date. A 10-year-old girl presenting with WT extending into upper pole ureter of duplex system is reported to emphasize the importance of preoperative diagnosis to plan step by step surgery in this rare coincidental situation.

BACKGROUND: Lipoblastoma is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor of infancy and early childhood. Symptoms vary depending on localization, and signs of compression of adjacent organs may be seen. METHODS: A total of 12 children with pathologically proven lipoblastoma from 2000 to 2014 were reviewed retrospectively for their clinical features, treatment and follow up. RESULTS: There were seven boys and five girls between 7.5 months and 7.5 years of age. The most common symptom was painless rapid-growing mass. The tumors were located in the neck, the abdomen, the groin, pelvis, axilla, glutea, labium majus, thigh and trunk. The largest tumor was in a retroperitoneal location and was 13 × 10 cm in size. Complete resection was performed in 10 patients. All of these patients were followed without any evidence of recurrence. Subtotal excision was performed in two patients. At a median follow up of 38 months (range, 1.8 months-10 years), all patients were disease free. CONCLUSIONS: Lipoblastoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of rapidly growing mass in patients <3 years of age. Total excision is the treatment of choice with preservation of vital organs. The prognosis is excellent despite large tumor size and local invasion. Recurrence rate is high in incompletely resected tumors. Regular follow up is important for early detection of recurrence.
