PURPOSE: Data from in vitro and animal studies support the preventive effect of tea (Camellia sinensis) against colorectal cancer. Further, many epidemiologic studies evaluated the association between tea consumption and colorectal cancer risk, but the results were inconsistent. We conducted a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies to systematically assess the association between tea consumption and colorectal cancer risk. METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was conducted to identify the related articles by searching PubMed and Embase up to June, 2019. Summary relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a fixed effect model. RESULTS: Twenty cohort articles were included in the present meta-analysis involving 2,068,137 participants and 21,437 cases. The combined RR of colorectal cancer for the highest vs. lowest tea consumption was determined to 0.97 (95% CI 0.94-1.01) with marginal heterogeneity (I2 = 24.0%, P = 0.093) among all studies. This indicated that tea consumption had no significant association with colorectal cancer risk. Stratified analysis showed that no significant differences were found in all subgroups. We further conducted the gender-specific meta-analysis for deriving a more precise estimation. No significant association was observed between tea consumption and colorectal cancer risk in male (combined RR = 0.97; 95% CI 0.90-1.04). However, tea consumption had a marginal significant inverse impact on colorectal cancer risk in female (combined RR = 0.93; 95% CI 0.86-1.00). Further, we found a stronger inverse association between tea consumption and risk of colorectal cancer among the female studies with no adjustment of coffee intake (RR: 0.90; 95% CI 0.82-1.00, P < 0.05) compared to the female studies that adjusted for coffee intake (RR = 0.97; 95% CI 0.87-1.09, P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our finding indicates that tea consumption has no significant impact on the colorectal cancer risk in both genders combined, but gender-specific meta-analysis shows that tea consumption has a marginal significant inverse impact on colorectal cancer risk in female.

BACKGROUND: Hyperthermia has proved successful in treating cutaneous human papillomavirus infectious diseases such as plantar wart and condyloma acuminata (CA). Moreover, this treatment provides improved therapeutic efficacy in these conditions as compared with conventional therapies. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the global proteome changes in CA in response to hyperthermia and achieve a better understanding of the mechanisms of hyperthermia therapy against HPV-infectious diseases. METHODS: CA tissue was obtained from patients undergoing pathological examinations. Diagnosis was verified as based on results of both HE staining and HPV-DNA PCR assay. Hyperthermia was achieved with a 44 °C water bath. Differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified by iTRAQ labeling, SCX chromatography and LC-MS/MS assay. Validation of proteomic results was performed using real-time qPCR and western blot, while bioinformatic analysis of DEPs was accomplished by R 3.4.1, STRING and Cytoscape softwares. RESULTS: In response to hyperthermia, a total of 102 DEPs were identified with 37 being upregulated and 65 downregulated. Among these DEPs, hyperthermia induced proteins involved with anti-viral processes such as OAS1, MX1, BANF1, CANX and AP1S1, whereas it inhibited proteins that participated in cellular metabolism, such as GALT, H6PD, EXOSC4 and EXOSC6; protein translation, such as RPS4Y1; as well as keratinocyte differentiation, such as KRT5, KRT27, KRT75, KRT76 and H2AFY2. CONCLUSIONS: Hyperthermia inhibited enzymes and molecules responsible for metabolism modulation and keratinocyte differentiation in CA tissue, whereas it promoted factors involved in anti-viral responses. Such effects may, in part, contribute to the efficacy of local hyperthermia therapy against HPV infection.

A random-pattern skin flap plays an important role in the field of wound repair; the mechanisms that influence the survival of random-pattern skin flaps have been extensively studied but little attention has been paid to endogenous counterinjury substances and mechanism. Previous reports reveal that the apelin-APJ axis is an endogenous counterinjury mechanism that has considerable function in protecting against infection, inflammation, oxidative stress, necrosis, and apoptosis in various organs. As an in vivo study, our study proved that the apelin/APJ axis protected the skin flap by alleviating vascular oxidative stress and the apelin/APJ axis works as an antioxidant stress factor dependent on CaMKK/AMPK/GSK3ß signaling. In addition, the apelin/APJ-manipulated CaMKK/AMPK/GSK3ß-dependent mechanism improves HUVECs' resistance to oxygen and glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R), reduces ROS production and accumulation, maintained the normal mitochondrial membrane potential, and suppresses oxidative stress in vitro. Besides, activation of the apelin/APJ axis promotes vascular migration and angiogenesis under relative hypoxia condition through CaMKK/AMPK/GSK3ß signaling. In a word, we provide new evidence that the apelin/APJ axis is an effective antioxidant and can significantly improve the vitality of random flaps, so it has potential be a promising clinical treatment.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a serious and frequently occurring disease in the elderly, characterized by cartilage degeneration and proliferation of bone structure. Glycyrrhizin, a compound extracted from licorice, has been reported to have various important biological activities, such as antioxidant properties and anti-inflammatory action. However, it has not been reported whether glycyrrhizin has a positive effect on OA development. Our study aimed to evaluate the effects of glycyrrhizin on human OA chondrocytes. In the present study, we discovered that glycyrrhizin remarkably suppressed the interleukin (IL)-1ß-induced level of nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) and the production of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOs), metalloproteinase3 (MMP3), metalloproteinase13 (MMP13) and a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs5 (ADAMTS5). In addition, glycyrrhizin inverted the degradation of aggrecan and collagen II. Moreover, it significantly inhibited IL-1ß-stimulated PI3K/AKT phosphorylation and NF-κB mobilization in human OA chondrocytes. In vivo, glycyrrhizin treatment prevented the destruction of cartilage in mice OA models. In summary, all the results demonstrate that glycyrrhizin may be a potential therapeutic approach for OA.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on the response of surgical stress during perioperative period. METHODS: From July 2005 to June 2006, 30 SD rats with the same age were distributed into 3 experimental groups and 1 control group randomly. Each experimental group included 8 rats, and the control group included 6 rats. The rats in experimental groups received intravenous infusion of cyclophosphamide, while the rats in control group received IV infusion of normal sodium. The blood of rats from experimental groups was taken 30 min before and during the stimulation of abdominal surgery which was given at the end of the first, the second and the third week after receiving IV infusion cyclophosphamide. Then the plasma concentration of noradrenaline was measured respectively. RESULTS: The IV infusion of cyclophosphamide before operation could greatly improve the plasma level of norepinephrine, and it reached peak at the end of the second week. When surgeries were given at that time, the stress response became much more seriously. The response induced by neoadjuvant chemotherapy disappeared 3 weeks later. CONCLUSIONS: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide can induce significant stress response which is characterized by the increase of plasma level of norepinephrine. It indicates that the best time of surgery for patients who have received neoadjuvant chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide is 2 weeks later.
