RESUMO

Mass-selected photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy was employed to investigate the geometrical and electronic properties of AuS2H-/0. The comprehensive comparison between the experiment and theoretical calculations establishes that the ground-state AuS2H- anion has a mixed-ligand structure [SAuSH]- with an unsymmetrical S-Au-S unit. Further chemical bonding analyses on AuS2H and comparison with the isoelectronic AuS2- suggest that the unique S-Au-S unit in these species features two three-center, three-electron π-bonding, and one three-center, two-electron σ-bonding. The isoelectronic replacement of the extra electron in AuS2- by the H atom can lead to σ bonding evolution from the electron-sharing bond to the dative bond. These findings are conducive to the fundamental understanding of the intrinsic stability of thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters and their delicate ligand design to achieve desirable properties.

Mass-selected photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy in conjunction with the density functional theory calculations was employed to investigate the geometrical and chemical bonding properties of NiC3-/0. Both the photoelectron spectrum and photoelectron angular distribution were measured from the spectra, yielding useful geometrical and electronic information about NiC3-/0. The complementary theoretical calculations suggest that the linear and fan-like structures were both populated experimentally in the cluster beam. Further comparative study on the synergistic donor-acceptor interactions in both isomers revealed the side-on coordination-induced bond weakening in the fan-like isomer as compared to the linear isomer. These findings will shed light on the structure-dependent reactivity of transition metal carbides.

BACKGROUND: GC pairs are generally more stable than AT pairs; GC-rich genomes were proposed to be more adapted to high temperatures than AT-rich genomes. Previous studies consistently showed positive correlations between growth temperature and the GC contents of structural RNA genes. However, for the whole genome sequences and the silent sites of the codons in protein-coding genes, the relationship between GC content and growth temperature is in a long-lasting debate. RESULTS: With a dataset much larger than previous studies (681 bacteria and 155 archaea with completely assembled genomes), our phylogenetic comparative analyses showed positive correlations between optimal growth temperature (Topt) and GC content both in bacterial and archaeal structural RNA genes and in bacterial whole genome sequences, chromosomal sequences, plasmid sequences, core genes, and accessory genes. However, in the 155 archaea, we did not observe a significant positive correlation of Topt with whole-genome GC content (GCw) or GC content at four-fold degenerate sites. We randomly drew 155 samples from the 681 bacteria for 1000 rounds. In most cases (> 95%), the positive correlations between Topt and genomic GC contents became statistically nonsignificant (P > 0.05). This result suggested that the small sample sizes might account for the lack of positive correlations between growth temperature and genomic GC content in the 155 archaea and the bacterial samples of previous studies. Comparing the GC content among four categories (psychrophiles/psychrotrophiles, mesophiles, thermophiles, and hyperthermophiles) also revealed a positive correlation between GCw and growth temperature in bacteria. By including the GCw of incompletely assembled genomes, we expanded the sample size of archaea to 303. Positive correlations between GCw and Topt appear especially after excluding the halophilic archaea whose GC contents might be strongly shaped by intense UV radiation. CONCLUSIONS: This study explains the previous contradictory observations and ends a long debate. Prokaryotes growing in high temperatures have higher GC contents. Thermal adaptation is one possible explanation for the positive association. Meanwhile, we propose that the elevated efficiency of DNA repair in response to heat mutagenesis might have the by-product of increasing GC content like that happens in intracellular symbionts and marine bacterioplankton.

The structural and bonding properties of the Pt2C2n - (n = 1-3) complexes have been investigated by mass-selected photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy with quantum chemical calculations. The adiabatic detachment energies and vertical detachment energies of Pt2C2n - have been obtained from the measured photoelectron imaging spectra. Theoretical results indicate that the lowest-energy isomers of Pt2C2n - (n = 1-3) possess linear chain-shaped configurations. The binding motif in the most stable isomer of Pt2C2 - has a linear cumulenic structure with a Pt=C=C=Pt configuration, and the structural characteristic persists up to all the lowest-energy isomers of the Pt2C4 - and Pt2C6 - anions. The chemical bonding analyses indicate that the Pt2C2n - (n = 1-3) complexes have multicenter two-electron characteristics.

BACKGROUND: We studied the magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) associations with clinicopathologic features of estrogen-dependent endometrial cancer (type I EC). METHODS: Totally 45 patients with type I EC who underwent preoperative multi-voxel MRS at 3.0 T were enrolled. The mean ratio of the Cho peak integral to the unsuppressed water peak integral (Cho/water) of the tumor was calculated. The Cho/water and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of type I EC with and without local invasion, as well as with different levels of Ki-67 staining index (SI) (≤ 40% and > 40%), were compared. Correlation test was used to examine the relationship of Cho/water, as well as mean ADC, with Ki-67 SI, tumor stage, and tumor grade. RESULTS: The mean Cho/water of EC with Ki-67 SI ≤ 40% (2.28 ± 0.93) × 10-3 was lower than that with Ki-67 SI > 40% (4.08 ± 1.00) × 10-3 (P < 0.001). The mean Cho/water of EC with deep and superficial myometrial invasion was (3.41 ± 1.26) × 10-3 and (2.43 ± 1.11) × 10-3, respectively (P = 0.011). There was no significant difference in Cho/water between type I EC with and without cervical invasioin ([2.68 ± 1.00] × 10-3 and [2.77 ± 1.28] × 10-3, P = 0.866). The mean Cho/water of type I EC with and without lymph node metastasis was (4.02 ± 1.90) × 10-3 and (2.60 ± 1.06) × 10-3, respectively (P = 0.014). The Cho/water was positively correlated with the Ki-67 SI (r = 0.701, P < 0.001). There were no significant differences in ADC among groups (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: MRS is helpful for preoperative assessment of clinicopathological features of type I EC.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the predictive values of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) myometrial thickness grading and dark intraplacental band (DIB) volumetry for blood loss in patients with placenta accreta spectrum (PAS). METHODS: Images and clinical data were acquired from patients who underwent placenta MRI examinations and were diagnosed with PAS from March 2015 to January 2021. Two radiologists jointly diagnosed, processed, and analysed the MR images of each patient. The analysis included MRI-based determination of placental attachment, as well as myometrial thickness grading and DIB volumetry. The patients included in the study were divided into three groups according to the estimated blood loss volume: in the general blood loss (GBL) group, the estimated blood loss volume was < 1000 ml; in the massive blood loss (MBL) group, the estimated blood loss volume was ≥ 1000 ml and < 2000 ml; and in the extremely massive blood loss (ex-MBL) group, the estimated blood loss volume was ≥ 2000 ml. The categorical, normally distributed, and non-normally distributed data were respectively analysed by the Chi-square, single-factor analysis of variance, and Kruskal-Wallis tests, respectively. The verification of correlation was completed by Spearman correlation analysis. The evaluation capabilities of indicators were assessed using receiver operating characteristic curves. RESULTS: Among 75 patients, 25 were included in the GBL group, 26 in the MBL group, and 24 in the ex-MBL group. A significant negative correlation was observed between the grade of myometrial thickness and the estimated blood loss (P < 0.001, ρ = - 0.604). There was a significant positive correlation between the volume of the DIB and the estimated blood loss (P < 0.001, ρ = 0.653). The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the two MRI features for predicting blood loss ≥ 2000 ml were 0.776 and 0.897, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The grading and volumetric MRI features, myometrial thickness, and volume of DIB, can be used as good prediction indicators of the risk of postpartum haemorrhage in patients with PAS.

As one of the significant serum cytokines, platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) is a crucial protein biomarker overexpressed in human life-threatening tumors, the sensitive identification and quantification of which are urgently desired but challenging. Herein we report a novel core-shell nanoarchitecture consisting of Cu-based metal-organic frameworks (Cu-MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (denoted as TpBD-COFs), which was used to prepare an aptasensor for the detection of platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB). The central Cu-MOFs function as signal labels with no need for extra redox media, whereas the porous TpBD serves as the shell to immobilize the PDGF-BB-targeted aptamer strands in abundance via strong interactions involving π-π stacking, electrostatic, and hydrogen bonding interactions. The proposed aptasensor based on Cu-MOF@TpBD can achieve a detection limit as low as 0.034 pg mL-1 within the dynamic detection range from 0.0001 to 60 ng mL-1. The hybridization of MOFs and COFs, together with the immobilization with the specific analyte targeted aptamer, provides a promising and propagable approach to prepare an aptasensor for the simple, sensitive, and selective detection of a specific biomarker in clinical diagnosis.

RESUMO

Motivated by the predicted unusual short Ni-Ni bond length that is comparable to the intermetallic distance anticipated for the triple bond, the nature of Ni-Ni bonding interaction in the triply carbonyl-bridged geometry of the neutral Ni2(CO)5 complex has been investigated using a range of state-of-the-art quantum chemistry methods. The elaborate analyses manifest that the tribridged Ni2(CO)5 features triple three-center two-electron Ni-C-Ni bonds instead of Ni≡Ni triple bond. The electron pair donated by the bridging carbonyl ligand should be shared by both nickel centers to achieve the favored (18, 18) configuration.

The homoleptic homodinuclear nickel carbonyl anions Ni2(CO)n- (n = 4-6) are mass-selected in the gas phase and examined with anion photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy combined with density functional calculations. The doubly carbonyl-bridged structures are found to be favorable for Ni2(CO)n- (n = 4-6). The nature of Ni-Ni bonding in these complexes is analysed with the aid of a range of state-of-the-art quantum chemistry methods. Despite the absence of direct multiple Ni-Ni bonds, the two nickel atoms in Ni2(CO)n- (n = 4-6) complexes are joined by two bridging carbonyl ligands via the sharing three-center two-electron Ni-C-Ni bond in turn to achieve the (16,16), (16,18), and eventually the favored (18,18) configurations.

The CO chemisorption onto the ScO+ cation was investigated using infrared photodissociation spectroscopy combined with density functional theory calculations. The spectra were recorded in the CO stretching vibrational region for the OSc(CO)n+ (n = 4-6) complex series. Comparisons of the experimental spectra with the simulated ones have established the geometries and present strong evidence that all of the CO ligands are chemisorbed, which could not be readily oxidized by scandium monoxide core into CO2. Complementary calculations demonstrate that, regardless of the thermodynamic feasibility, the CO oxidation on the scandium monoxide carbonyl complexes is kinetically unfavorable due to the significant barriers involved in the CO oxidation process. Nevertheless, the consecutive CO adsorption has a positive influence on the Sc-O bond activation.

BACKGROUND: Meat fraud and adulteration incidents occur frequently in almost all regions of the globe, especially with the increase in the world's population. To ensure the authenticity of meat products, we developed a 10-plex xMAP assay to simultaneously detect ten animal materials: bovine, caprine, poultry, swine, donkey, deer, horse, dog, fox and mink. RESULTS: This method was investigated by analyzing DNA extracts from raw muscle, muscle mixtures, meat products and animal feeds. Our results indicated that the species of interest can be identified, differentiated and detected down to 1 g kg-1 in binary mixtures or 0.01-0.001 ng of genomic DNA from specific species. Testing of 125 commercial samples showed a 97.4% coincidence rate with the method used in routine testing in our lab. CONCLUSION: These results indicated that the method established in this study could detect ten animal materials simultaneously within 3 h, which provides a new, useful tool for animal ingredient analysis in meat products and animal feeds. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Infrared spectra of the neutral dimethylamine-methanol cluster, DMA-CH3OH, were measured in the spectral range of 2800-3900 cm-1 using an infrared-vacuum ultraviolet (IR-VUV) scheme. Quantum chemical calculations and ab initio molecular dynamic (AIMD) simulations were carried out to understand the experimental spectral features. Experimental and theoretical results reveal the coexistence of N···HO and O···HN hydrogen-bonded structures. AIMD simulations show that the methyl group in methanol internally rotates around the N···O axis, addressing the dynamic effect of the fluctuation of hydrogen bonds on the vibrational features. The bonding analysis was performed to elucidate the nature of the intermolecular interaction between DMA and CH3OH. The present work provides the fundamental understanding of hydrogen-bonding networks in the amine-alcohol complexes.

The identification of animal species in feed and feedstuffs is important for detecting contamination and fraudulent replacement of animal components that might cause health and economic problems. A novel multiplex assay, based on xMAP technology and the generic detection of closely related species, was developed for the simultaneous differential detection of avian, fish, and ruminant DNA in products. Universal primers and probes specific to avian, fish, or ruminant species were designed to target a conserved mitochondrial DNA sequence in the 12S ribosomal RNA gene (rRNA). The assay specificity was validated using samples of 27 target and 10 nontarget animal species. The limits of detection of the purified DNA were determined to be 0.2 pg/µL-0.1 ng/µL by testing the meat samples of six species and four feedstuffs. The detection sensitivity of the experimental mixtures was demonstrated to be 0.01% (weight percentage). The assay's suitability for practical application was evaluated by testing feed samples; unlabeled animal ingredients were detected in 32% of the 56 samples. The assay differentially detected the three targeted categories of animal species in less than 2 h, reflecting improvements in speed and efficiency. Based on these results, this novel multiplex xMAP assay provides a reliable and highly efficient technology for the routine detection of animal species in feed and other products for which this information is needed.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common cancer in men. The Gleason score (GS) and biomarkers play important roles in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with PCa. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and the molecular markers Ki-67, hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in PCa. Thirty-nine patients with 39 lesions, who had been diagnosed with PCa, were enrolled in this study. All patients underwent diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) (b = 800 s/mm2 ). The expression of Ki-67, HIF-1α and VEGF was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Statistical analysis was applied to analyze the association between ADC and prostate-specific antigen (PSA), GS and the expression of Ki-67, HIF-1α and VEGF. The group differences in ADC among different grades of Ki-67, HIF-1α and VEGF were also analyzed. The mean ± standard deviation of ADC was (0.76 ± 0.27) × 10-3  mm2 /s. ADC correlated negatively with PSA and GS (p < 0.05). The Ki-67 staining index (SI), HIF-1α expression and VEGF expression in PCa were correlated inversely with ADC, controlling for age (r = -0.332, p < 0.05; r = -0.662, p < 0.0005; and r = -0.714, p < 0.0005, respectively). ADC showed a significant difference among different grades of Ki-67 (F = 9.164, p = 0.005), HIF-1α (F = 40.333, p < 0.0005) and VEGF (F = 22.048, p < 0.0005). In conclusion, ADC was correlated with PSA, GS, and Ki-67, HIF-1α and VEGF expression in patients with PCa. ADC may be used to evaluate tumor proliferation, hypoxia and angiogenesis in PCa.

BACKGROUND: The evidence for effectiveness of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is robust and the national organizations in the United Kingdom and the United States recommend its use. It is not utilized to its full potential in low and middle-income countries. Adaptation of CBT treatment to the target culture may facilitate its uptake. This study explored views of patients with schizophrenia, their caregivers, and mental health professionals for the purpose of cultural adaptation of CBT. METHOD: The project was conducted in a teaching hospital in China. Systematic content and question analysis were the techniques we used to analyse the data generated in a series of qualitative interviews (N 45) in China. After identification of emerging themes and categories we compared and contrasted the themes across different interviews recursively. Triangulation of themes and concepts was undertaken to compare further and contrast the data from the different participating groups. RESULTS: This work highlighted the barriers in therapy as well as opportunities for use of CBT in that environment. Patients and their carers in China use a bio-psycho-spiritual-social model of illness. CBT is not commonly used to help those with schizophrenia in China. CONCLUSIONS: This study will facilitate the therapists using CBT for people with psychosis in China. These results require to be tested in clinical trials.

We report a joint experimental and theoretical study on heterodinuclear silver-nickel carbonyl clusters: AgNi(CO)n- and AgNi(CO)n (n = 2, 3). The photoelectron spectra and photoelectron angular distribution provide information on the electronic structures and geometries of these complexes. Electron affinities of AgNi(CO)2 and AgNi(CO)3 are measured from the photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectra to be 2.29 ± 0.03 and 2.32 ± 0.03 eV, respectively. The complementary theoretical calculations at the B3LYP level and Franck-Condon simulations are performed to establish their geometrical structures. The C-O stretching modes are activated upon photodetachment and determined to be 2024 and 2028 cm-1 for AgNi(CO)2 and AgNi(CO)3, respectively, which are notably red-shifted with respect to those of corresponding unsaturated binary nickel carbonyls. These findings will shed light on the promoted C-O bond weakening by the introduction of a foreign atom to binary unsaturated TM carbonyl complexes.

A series of yttrium oxide-carbonyls are prepared via a laser vaporization supersonic cluster source in the gas phase and identified by mass-selected infrared photodissociation (IRPD) spectroscopy in the C-O stretching region and by comparing the observed IR spectra with those from quantum chemical calculations. For YO(CO)4(+), all four CO ligands prefer to occupy the equatorial site of the YO(+) unit, leading to a quadrangular pyramid with C4v symmetry. Two energetically nearly degenerate isomers are responsible for YO(CO)5(+), in which the fifth CO ligand is either inserted into the equatorial plane of YO(CO)4(+) or coordinated opposite the oxygen on the C4 axis. YO(CO)6(+) has a pentagonal bipyramidal structure with C5v symmetry, which includes five equatorial CO ligands and one axial CO ligand. The present IRPD spectroscopic and theoretical study of YO(CO)n(+) extends the first shell coordination number of CO ligands in metal monoxide carbonyls to six. The transition from equatorial to axial CO chemisorption in these yttrium oxide-carbonyls is fortunately observed at n = 5, providing new insight into ligand interactions and coordination for the transition metal oxides.

Joint research of photoelectron velocity map imaging spectroscopy and density functional theory has been performed to probe the geometrical structures and electronic properties for heterodinuclear iron-lead carbonyl cluster PbFe(CO)4(-), which serves as a monomer of the metal-metal bonded oligomer. The photoelectron detachment of PbFe(CO)4(-) is recorded at two different photon energies with rich spectral features. The ground-state transition obtained at 532 nm reveals a broad vibrationally resolved spectral band, which corresponds to the lead-iron stretching, while the 355 nm spectrum displays many more transitions on the higher-energy side, which correspond to the electronic excited states of PbFe(CO)4. Theoretical calculations at the B3LYP level are performed to explore the ground states of both the anionic and neutral PbFe(CO)4 and to support spectral identification of the fine resolved photoelectron spectra. Moreover, the unique chemical bonding between lead and iron in PbFe(CO)4 is discussed with the aid of natural bond orbital analyses.

Interleukin (IL)-22 has been implicated in inflammation and tumorigenesis. To date, no studies have investigated the role of IL-22 polymorphism in the carcinogenesis of gastric cancer (GC). In this study, we aimed to investigate the association of IL-22 polymorphisms with the risk of GC in a Chinese population. One hundred eight GC patients and 110 healthy controls were included in the study. IL-22 rs1179251, rs2227485, and rs2227473 polymorphisms were determined by PCR amplification and DNA sequencing. Haplotypes were constructed, and a possible association of these haplotypes with GC was assessed. The distribution of IL-22 rs1179251 polymorphism with clinical parameters was also analyzed. The IL-22 rs1179251 polymorphism was significantly associated with an increased risk of GC (p < 0.05). Stratified analysis revealed that rs1179251 was associated with advanced stages, lymph node metastases, and distant metastases of GC (p < 0.05). No associations were found between rs2227485 and rs2227473 and the risk of GC (p > 0.05). Three possible haplotypes (C(rs1179251)-C(rs2227485)-G(rs2227485), C(rs1179251)-T(rs2227485)-G(rs2227485), and G(rs1179251)-T(rs2227485)-A(rs2227485)) were identified, but no associations were found between these and the risk of GC (p > 0.05). In summary, our study demonstrates that the rs1179251 polymorphism of IL-22 was associated with an increased risk of GC and may influence the progression of GC. Future larger studies with other ethnic populations are required to confirm these findings.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to evaluate pathological and functional changes in chronic kidney disease (CKD) using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) at 3 T. METHODS: There were fifty-one patients with CKD who required biopsy and 19 healthy volunteers who were examined using DTI at 3 T. The mean values of fractional anisotropy (FA) and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) were obtained from the renal parenchyma (cortex and medulla). Correlations between imaging results and the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), as well as pathological damage (glomerular lesion and tubulointerstitial injury), were evaluated. RESULTS: The renal cortical FA was significantly lower than the medullary in both normal and affected kidneys (p < 0.001). The parenchymal FA was significantly lower in patients than healthy controls, regardless of whether eGFR was reduced. There were positive correlations between eGFR and FA (cortex, r = 0.689, p = 0.000; and medulla, r = 0.696, p = 0.000), and between eGFR and ADC (cortex, r = 0.310, p = 0.017; and medulla, r = 0.356, p = 0.010). Negative correlations were found between FA and the glomerular lesion (cortex, r = -0.499, p = 0.000; and medulla, r = -0.530, p = 0.000), and between FA and tubulointerstitial injury (cortex, r = -0.631, p = 0.000; and medulla, r = -0.724, p = 0.000). CONCLUSION: DTI is valuable for noninvasive assessment of renal function and pathology in patients with CKD. A decrease in FA could identify the glomerular lesions, tubulointerstitial injuries, and eGFR.
