RESUMO

Phloroglucinol (PL) or 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene is a phenolic compound used therapeutically for its antispasmodic properties. However, an overdose or prolonged exposure to PL can have harmful effects on human health. This work describes for the first time the development of a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor to determine PL. The proposed sensor is based on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate modified with bismuth calcium tantalate (CaBi2Ta2O9), a ceramic perovskite powder, and bismuth vanadate (BiVO4). Both materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The morphology of the BiVO4/CaBi2Ta2O9/FTO platform was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The photoelectrochemical response of the platform was evaluated by exploiting with light from a 36 W LED lamp confined in a low-cost homemade box. The BiVO4/CaBi2Ta2O9/FTO sensor showed superior photocurrent response compared to the FTO modified by the individual components (BiVO4/FTO and CaBi2Ta2O9/FTO). Under optimized experimental conditions, the photoelectrochemical sensor showed two linear ranges for PL concentrations ranging from 1 up to 900 µmol L-1 and from 900 up to 2000 µmol L-1, respectively.  The BiVO4/CaBi2Ta2O9/FTO sensor exhibited excellent results regarding precision, accuracy, and selectivity for PL detection. PL determination was successfully performed in water and artificial urine samples, with recovery values between 100.1 and 102.2%.

RESUMO

Gender similarities have been detected in various sexual behaviors and attitudes in young adults, but persistent differences remain regarding casual sexual relationships (CSRs), with women feeling different external pressures than men. We set out to study the spontaneous references made to gender similarities and differences towards CSRs in eight focus group interviews (N = 35 college-students, aged 18-28) about the characteristics of CSRs within a social-role framework. The thematic analysis led us to the interpretation that there is an ongoing change in the acceptability of these relationships, leading to the emergence of a single sexual standard - mostly liberal, but at times also conservative. However, different expectations remain, derived from a deep-rooted traditional sexual double standard still perceived in society. Challenges to the unequal standards and social constraints in CSRs is desired by many women, defended by men, and admired in those women whose striving contributes to the normalization of this conduct and of how it is evaluated. RESUMO

Cardiovascular diseases are considered one of the leading causes of premature mortality of patients worldwide. Therefore, rapid diagnosis of these diseases is crucial to ensure the patient's survival. During a heart attack or severe muscle damage, myoglobin is rapidly released in the body to constitute itself as a precise biomarker of acute myocardial infarction. Thus, we described the photoelectrochemical immunosensor development to detect myoglobin. It was based on fluorine-doped tin oxide modified with CdSeS/ZnSe quantum dots and barium titanate (BTO), designated as CdSeS/ZnSQDS/BTO. It was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and amperometry. The anodic photocurrent at the potential of 0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) and pH 7.4 was found linearly related to the myoglobin (Mb) concentration from 0.01 to 1000 ng mL-1. Furthermore, the immunosensor showed an average recovery rate of 95.7-110.7% for the determination of myoglobin.

RESUMO

Casual sexual relationships (CSR) are increasingly common but limited empirical research has addressed their terminology and distinctive characteristics. This study sought to identify the most clear-cut terms and to consider how culture-sensitive characteristics distinguish casual sexual relationships among Portuguese emerging adults (N = 262, 18-29 years old). We combined two qualitative studies - one by association and another by free recall - to ascertain the clarity of the terms, plus a quantitative study to further characterize and differentiate them. Participants were asked to match descriptions of CSRs with the respective terms by which they are known (Study 1). The same was investigated using an evocation task requesting that participants produce the terms by which the described CSRs are known (Study 2). Binary logistic regressions were performed to analyze the associations between encounters and labels chosen, taking the effect of gender and age into account. In the third study, participants rated the degree to which eight characteristics were present in the types of CSR, a simultaneous task that led to greater understanding of their descriptive and differentiating characteristics. Multivariate analysis of variance was used, with gender and age as covariates. We conclude that two types of CSR - friends with benefits and one-night stand - and, to a lesser extent, making out, are understood and associated with consensual labels, also found by free-recall. These CSRs proved to be distinct, as they are understood as more different than similar in a set of psychoemotional, behavioral, and sexual characteristics. RESUMO

The article describes a method for determination of tannic acid in extracts of medicinal plants. Tannic acid (TA) is an antioxidant and has anticancer and antimicrobial properties. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2) were co-sensitized with 5-methylphenazinium methosulfate (PMS) and carboxy-functionalized cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs), and immobilized on a fluorine-doped tin oxide electrode. The surface morphology and electrochemical properties of the modified electrode were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and amperometry, respectively. A composite consisting of TiO2, PMS and CdTe QDs in a nafion film has a response to TA under LED light higher than that observed for each separate component. Under optimized experimental conditions and at an applied voltage of +0.4 V vs Ag/AgCl, the photoelectrochemical sensor has a linear response in the 0.2 to 200 µmol L-1 TA concentration range and a detection limit of 60 nmol L-1. The sensor was successfully applied to the determination of TA in spiked extracts from three medicinal plants, with recovery values between 98.3 and 103.9 %. RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Midurethral slings (MUS) are the mainstay of treatment for stress urinary incontinence, but the definition of success varies widely amongst studies. The King's Health Questionnaire (KHQ) was designed to evaluate the impact of urinary incontinence on the quality of life. We hypothesised that the KHQ could be useful for postoperative quantitative assessment of subjective outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of 204 patients who underwent incontinence surgery with transobturator MUS between 2004 and 2013. Follow-up was planned at 6, 12 and 24 months and success was evaluated using the cough stress test (objective cure) and the KHQ global score (subjective outcomes). Statistical analysis included receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves to calculate a cut-off value for the KHQ global score to define subjective cure. The minimal clinically important difference was calculated with a distribution-based method (effect size) to estimate subjective improvement. RESULTS: Objective cure rates were 97 % and 95 % at 6 and 24 months respectively. ROC curves established the cut-off score at ≤ 31 for subjective cure, with sensitivity of 63-100 % and specificity of 82-88 %. Subjective cure rates were 80 % and 85 % at 6 and 24 months respectively. The minimal clinically important difference was set at 10 and an improvement of ≥ 10 points was defined as subjective improvement. Rates varied between 10 and 13 %. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed the value of the KHQ as an evaluation tool after UI surgery and determined clinically relevant threshold scores to define subjective outcomes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of a fetal anomaly in perinatal medicine forces expectant parents and healthcare providers to face the difficult process of breaking bad news. OBJECTIVES: This exploratory literature review was aimed at providing a medical and psychological view of the psychological experience in expectant parents and physicians in the context of prenatal diagnosis of a fetal anomaly. METHOD: An exploratory search of PubMed and PsycINFO/PsycARTICLES databases performed by an interdisciplinary team composed of a physician and psychologists. Search terms were: prenatal diagnosis AND bad news; prenatal diagnosis AND psychological consequences; prenatal diagnosis AND psychological sequelae; prenatal diagnosis AND fetal abnormality. The processing of selected articles followed a standardised five-step procedure. RESULTS: A total of 860 articles were screened of which 32 were retained for analysis. Four main themes emerged from the explanatory content analysis: (1) parents' subjective experience; (2) physicians' subjective experience; (3) encounters between expectant parents and professionals; and (4) ethical challenges in breaking bad news in prenatal medicine. CONCLUSION: Expectant parents go through a complex and multidimensional experience when the diagnosis of a fetal anomaly is disclosed. Simultaneously, physicians consider breaking bad news as a very stressful event and are poorly prepared in this regard. A better knowledge of factors underlying psychological adjustment of the parental dyad and on the subjective experience of physicians delivering these diagnoses could enable better adaptation for both patients and professionals.

RESUMO

Parental (parent-to-infant) attachment and parenting alliance are defined as two important components of psychoaffective adjustment to the parental role. This study aimed to build a predictive model of parental attachment and parenting alliance for mothers and fathers using partial least squares-structural equation modeling. Specifically, we were interested in assessing how adult romantic attachment, marital quality, and psychological distress influenced parental attachment (parent-to-infant) and parenting alliance. Forty heterosexual couples completed questionnaires during the third trimester of pregnancy and 2 months after childbirth. Results showed that adult romantic attachment, marital quality, and psychological distress were important antenatal determinants of parental attachment and parenting alliance, although they behaved differently for mothers and fathers. Hence, different predictive models were therefore proposed for mothers and fathers. Mothers' attachment to the child was influenced by internal factors as adult attachment dimensions; for fathers, it also depended on mothers' antenatal attachment to the child and on marital quality. Concerning parenting alliance, both mothers and fathers depended on own and partner's variables. Antenatal variables are important for what occurs during the transition to parenthood in terms of parenting adjustment and act differently for mothers and fathers. It thus is important to assess the psychological functioning of both mothers and fathers.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to determine the role of omental sampling in staging of uterine serous carcinoma (USC) and to evaluate its impact on patient outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of 106 women with USC who underwent primary surgery between 2005 and 2014 was done. Overall survival, disease-free survival, and progression and recurrence patterns were studied in 84 patients with follow-up over 1 year. Diagnostic characteristics were evaluated for preoperative imaging and operative findings. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to evaluate risk factors for omental metastasis. Survival curves were used to compare omental sampling status and the presence of omental metastasis. RESULTS: Of the 106 patients, 66 underwent surgical staging with omental biopsy (54; 82%) or omentectomy (12, 18%). Eight (12%) patients had metastatic disease in the omental samplings. All 6 patients with macrometastasis had visible lesions or palpable nodules and preoperative computed tomography (CT) was suspicious in 3. In 2 (3%) patients, omentum was not suspicious on CT or intraoperatively but had micrometastases. The negative predictive value regarding the staging CT scan was 92% and of the operative findings was 97%. On multivariate analysis, no variable was associated with omental involvement. Disease progressed or recurred in 40 (48%) patients. The most frequent sites of recurrence or progression were the omentum (23; 27%), peritoneum (26; 31%), pelvis (15, 18%), lung (15, 18%), and liver (12, 14%). Comparing the groups with or without omental assessment, no significant difference was found regarding progression and recurrence patterns, overall survival, and disease-free survival. CONCLUSIONS: Omental involvement in USC upstages patients to stage IV disease and traditional risk factors fail to predict extrauterine disease. Although omental sampling does not influence disease progression or survival, a comprehensive intraoperative evaluation of the omentum is advised as most cases have grossly visible lesions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: While the existence of a complex variety of casual sexual relationships (CSRs) has been acknowledged, studies rarely describe the prevalence of condom use across these relationships or how their hybrid nature, specifically relationship characteristics, affect condom use. This study aims to describe condom use within committed relationships and various types of casual sexual relationships (CSRs), examining the influence of relationship characteristics on condom use among culturally validated relationship types (committed, friends with benefits, hookups, booty call). METHODS: Emerging adults (N = 728, 18-29 years, M = 22.56; SD = 3.01) completed a survey with four blocks: sociodemographics; brief sexual history; relationships over the previous year; and current relationship, assessing relationship type, ten relationship characteristics (e.g., commitment, emotional and sexual exclusivity, partner acquaintance, sexual involvement) and condom use (vaginal, oral, and anal), operationalized by three measures (use at last encounter, likert-type scale and percentage of use). RESULTS: The results showed patterns in condom use by relationship type and illuminated how relationship characteristics-grouped into three factors: commitment, intimacy, and sexuality-mediate condom use. Condom use was more frequent in vaginal than anal and oral sex, and less frequent in committed relationships. No significant differences were found in condom use in vaginal sex between committed relationships and hookups, with condom in these relationships being significantly lower than in booty call. Intimacy mediated between all contrasts tested and condom use in vaginal sex, while sexuality mediated between committed vs. CSRs and condom use in anal and oral sex. CONCLUSIONS: Findings point to the need of considering the diversity of CSRs for understanding condom use and highlight the role of intimacy as a relevant mechanism associated with condom use in vaginal sex and of sexuality in oral and anal sex, which should be taken into consideration in the tailoring of health promoting efforts.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to explore the prospective relationship between anxiety symptoms and coping strategies during late pregnancy and early postpartum. METHODS: Participants completed the Hospital Anxiety Depression-Anxiety subscale and Carver's Brief COPE at two time points, namely during the last trimester of pregnancy (N = 400) and at two months postpartum (N = 158). RESULTS: Antenatally, 18.8% of pregnant women presented severe anxiety symptoms while 20.2% of women presented severe anxiety symptoms after birth. Carver's proposed coping styles allowed to significantly distinguish between anxious and non anxious women during these two periods. Anxious women used significantly more inappropriate coping and less adaptive coping responses, such as self-blame and denial of reality, which remained associated with anxiety in the perinatal period. Our results also indicated a decrease in adaptive coping in women without anxiety after birth (e.g. acceptance, positive reframing). CONCLUSION: Our findings confirm that antenatal and postnatal anxiety symptoms occur frequently and that inappropriate and/or non functional coping may account for persisting anxiety after childbirth. LIMITATIONS: Data were based on self-reports and participating women were predominantly primiparous. A high drop-out rate at two months postpartum must also be acknowledged.

RESUMO

Objective: Empirical research to differentiate casual sex scripts is still limited. We aimed to ascertain the sexual scripts for three main types of casual sexual relationships: hookup, friends with benefits and one-night stands. Methods: Through a mixed-method approach, we performed a study consisting in two sequential tasks to (1) complete three lists of script actions, and (2) identify the most agreed-upon actions for each casual sexual relationship. Results: An important number of actions and events were identified for the three casual sexual scripts, reflecting a high level of elaboration and structure. Following a cognitive-script methodology, the actions retained for the content of the script for each casual sexual relationship were those obtaining at least 60% in respect to the mean of their centrality to the encounter. Only 16.5% of actions were shared among the three scripts, demonstrating their distinctiveness. Conclusion: Knowledge about the different casual sex scripts can be used to develop relational and personal skills within CSRs and decrease unwanted experiences such as condomless sex.

RESUMO

This work describes the development of a membraneless, self-powered immunosensor exploiting a photoelectrochemical system based on two photoelectrodes for cardiac troponin I (cTn). An electrode based on CaBi2Ta2O9 combined with bismuth oxyiodides (BiOI/Bi4O5I2/Bi5O7I) was modified with the cTnI antibody (anti-cTnI) and applied in a photoelectrochemical cell as a photoanode. To perform the cTnI detection exploiting a self-powered photoelectrochemical setup, the immunosensor (anti-cTnI/BiOI/Bi4O5I2/Bi5O7I/CaBi2Ta2O9/FTO) was coupled to a photoelectrochemical cell containing a photocathode based on CuBi2O4 (CBO/FTO) for zero-biased photoelectrochemical immunosensing of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) biomarker. For comparison purposes, the photoanode was applied for cTnI detection in a three-electrode electrochemical cell. The spectroscopic, structural, and morphological characteristics of the photoelectrochemical (PEC) materials were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements were performed in the presence and absence of light to investigate the effects of photons on the charge transfer resistance of the photoanode. The influence of the cTnI biomarker on the photoelectrochemical response of the anti-cTnI antibody-modified photoelectrochemical platform (anti-cTnI/BiOI/Bi4O5I2/Bi5O7I/CaBi2Ta2O9/FTO) was evaluated by measuring the photocurrent of the system. The immunosensor presented a linear response ranging from 1 pg mL-1 to 200 ng mL-1 as well as a mean recovery percentage between 95.7% and 108.0% in real human serum samples for the cTnI biomarker.

RESUMO

2,3-Dihydroxyphenol (DHP) is a phenolic compound that has been used as an additive in biodiesel to avoid the auto-oxidation of biofuels and also in the production of cosmetic products. However, this substance can be released into the environment during its manufacture, transport, disposal and industrial use and can be harmful to health due to its toxicity, and hence, monitoring its presence in different samples is very important. Therefore, this work describes an electroanalytical study of DHP using different carbon-based pastes prepared to evaluate which one would be more promising to be used as an electrochemical platform for DHP quantification. The materials studied (graphite, carbon black and carbon nanotubes) in this work were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and the Boehm method. Voltammetric studies showed that pure carbon black presented a higher current density for detecting DHP than the other materials tested (graphite, carbon black + graphite, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanotubes + graphite). In studying the medium's pH, the highest currents occurred in acid media and acetate buffer solutions. After optimizing the experimental parameters, it was possible to obtain a wide range of linear responses from 0.1 to 10 000 µmol L-1 for DHP and a good limit of detection (LOD) of 0.03 µmol L-1. The selectivity of the electrode was tested for different species that may be present in samples containing DHP. Finally, the electrode was applied to determine DHP in natural water and biodiesel samples, showing recovery values between 98 and 102%, indicating good accuracy.

RESUMO

A sensitive and selective label-free photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor was designed for the detection of cardiac troponin I (cTnI). The platform was based on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)-coated glass photoelectrode modified with bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) and sensitized by an electrodeposited bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) film. The PEC response of the Bi2S3/BiVO4/FTO platform for the ascorbic acid (AA) donor molecule was approximately 1.6-fold higher than the response observed in the absence of Bi2S3. The cTnI antibodies (anti-cTnI) were immobilized on the Bi2S3/BiVO4/FTO platform surface to produce the anti-cTnI/Bi2S3/BiVO4/FTO immunosensor, which was incubated in cTnI solution to inhibit the AA photocurrent. The photocurrent obtained by the proposed immunosensor presented a linear relationship with the logarithm of the cTnI concentration, ranging from 1 pg mL-1 to 1000 ng mL-1. The immunosensor was successfully employed in artificial blood plasma samples for the detection of cTnI, with recovery values ranging from 98.0% to 98.5%.

RESUMO

Background: Women survivors of breast cancer treatments face significant challenges around initiation or maintenance of physical activity (PA) as they transit to recovery. Embracing their needs and preferences is important to increase adherence. This study aimed to explore the perspectives of Portuguese women survivors of breast cancer regarding regular performance of PA and individual choices and strategies that should be considered in designing effective interventions. Methods: The individual semi-structured interviews (N = 20) were analyzed through thematic analysis, following an inductive process, seeking to identify the barriers, facilitators, and particular influencing circumstances associated with regular PA. Results: Four themes and several contextual, emotional, physical, and social factors were identified as determinants of regular PA. Guilt, women's duties, and altruism to help close relatives were identified as emotional and cultural factors that are less-found in the existing literature. PA showed influence both from health professionals' counseling and from knowledge and beliefs held by these women. Conclusion: While confirming the already-known impact of breast cancer diagnosis and treatments on PA, which redefine participants' availability to be active, the findings highlight beliefs and specific emotional factors that should be considered when planning culturally sensitive interventions.

RESUMO

Casual sexual relationships (CSRs) are frequent relationship experiences in young adulthood that provide opportunities for many to explore sexual relationships and to construct their sexual identity. Empirical research on casual sex is still lacking outside North-American countries, despite evidence pointing to the need to contextualize sexual interactions in their own sociocultural context. In order to better understand casual sexual relationships, these should be examined in with novel samples in other countries where a "hookup culture" as it is described in the North-American university campus is apparently absent. Through a qualitative study, we explored what casual sexual relationships consist of according to the perceptions of Portuguese college students (N = 35). The thematic analysis of eight focus group interviews resulted in the generation of six themes, three of which are presented here: (1) What CSRs are, regarding features and types of CSRs, (2) Why individuals engage in CSRs, focusing on positive and negative motivations, and (3) What one gets from CSRs, focusing on positive and negative outcomes of CSRs. Our findings showed that Portuguese emerging adults are familiarized with CSRs, particularly with one-night stand, friends with benefits and "curte"/hookup. Sexual interactions associated with other CSRs, such as booty call or fuck buddies, were mentioned but rarely associated with a distinctive label and established characteristics. Participants described the CSRs in a partially overlapping manner presenting some areas of ambiguity, such as with regard to sexual exclusivity and still-unlabeled sexual interactions. CSRs are generally evaluated as positively motivated and mainly beneficial. This study adds to the literature around casual sexual relationships by exploring and describing CSRs in a different sociocultural context, as well as indicating directions for future research in order to better prepare and empower young adults in their sexual and relational trajectories.

RESUMO

This work aims to develop a photoelectrochemical (PEC) platform for detection of SARS-CoV-2 spike glyprotein S1. The PEC platform is based on the modification of a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) coated glass slide with strontium titanate (SrTiO3 or ST), sulfur-doped carbon nitride (g-C3N4-S or CNS) and palladium nanoparticles entrapped in aluminum hydroxide matrix (PdAlO(OH) or PdNPs). The PEC platform was denoted as PdNPs/CNS/ST/FTO and it was characterized by SEM, TEM, FTIR, DRX, and EIS. The PEC response of the PdNPs/CNS/ST/FTO platform was optimized by evaluating the effects of the concentration of the donor molecule, the nature of the buffer, pH, antibody concentration, potential applied to the working electrode, and incubation time. The optimized PdNPs/CNS/ST/FTO PEC platform was modified with 5 µg mL-1 of antibody for determination of SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein S1. A decrease in the photocurrent was observed with an increase in the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 from 1 fg mL-1 to 1000 pg mL-1 showing that the platform is a promising alternative for the detection of S1 protein from SARS-CoV-2. The designed PEC platform exhibited recovery percentages of 96.20% and 109.65% in artificial saliva samples.
