[Becker's benign muscular dystrophy. Observations on 1 family]. / Sulla distrofia muscolare benigna di Becker Considerazioni su una famiglia.

Three males in a family had Becker's benign muscular dystrophy. In addition, there were five likely female carriers, three of whom presented altered biochemical findings. Agreement is expressed with the view of other workers that Becker's form can be distinguished from the serious form of the disease on the grounds of exclusive expression in males, late onset of the first symptoms, recessive transmission linked to the X chromosome, extremely slow progression, and long survival.

The Authors, referring to the actual biochemical hypotheses of the Chorea of Huntington and on the new prospects of treatment, report the experimental data relative to some therapeutic attempt on patients suffering from this disease. In two cases has been tested Bromocriptine, in three cases Bromocriptine with l-dopa, in three cases Piribedil with l-dopa, in four cases Haloperidol with l-dopa. Positive results of temporary term are obtained only with the association Piribedil plus l-dopa and in one case with the association Haloperidol plus l-dopa. The results are considered insufficient for assuming significance of clinical proposal.

[Electroencephalographic study of 150 hospitalized alcoholics]. / Studio elettroencefalografico su 150 casi di alcoolisti ospedalizzati.

The Authors compare the electroencephalographic findings and the tests of hepatic function in 140 patients with diagnosis of alcoholism. They notice the great percentage of normal EEG and the prevalence in the other cases of modest and aspecific anomalies. This findings is in accordance with most of the Authors who have studied this subject. The Authors remark also the positive correlation between these anomalies and the tests of hepatic function; they notice also how important is the contemporary presence of hematochemical changes and even slight signs of a neurotoxic syndrome, of which the EEG anomalies could be the expression, in order to formulate a correct prognosis and therapy of neurological and psychiatric alcoholism.

The Authors present two cases of atypical depression with prevalently or exclusively somatic symptomatology. They discuss successively on the significance of latent and masked depressions and depressing equivalents, underlining the remarkable importance of the problem also for practical doctors and non-specialists. In fact, the presence of cases like this type is common and for a correct therapeutic statement an exact diagnostic formulation is indispensable.
