RESUMO

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether dietary intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) modifies the cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk associated with a family history of CVD. We assessed interactions between biomarkers of low PUFA intake and a family history in relation to long-term CVD risk in a large consortium. METHODS: Blood and tissue PUFA data from 40 885 CVD-free adults were assessed. PUFA levels ≤25th percentile were considered to reflect low intake of linoleic, alpha-linolenic, and eicosapentaenoic/docosahexaenoic acids (EPA/DHA). Family history was defined as having ≥1 first-degree relative who experienced a CVD event. Relative risks with 95% CI of CVD were estimated using Cox regression and meta-analyzed. Interactions were assessed by analyzing product terms and calculating relative excess risk due to interaction. RESULTS: After multivariable adjustments, a significant interaction between low EPA/DHA and family history was observed (product term pooled RR, 1.09 [95% CI, 1.02-1.16]; P=0.01). The pooled relative risk of CVD associated with the combined exposure to low EPA/DHA, and family history was 1.41 (95% CI, 1.30-1.54), whereas it was 1.25 (95% CI, 1.16-1.33) for family history alone and 1.06 (95% CI, 0.98-1.14) for EPA/DHA alone, compared with those with neither exposure. The relative excess risk due to interaction results indicated no interactions. CONCLUSIONS: A significant interaction between biomarkers of low EPA/DHA intake, but not the other PUFA, and a family history was observed. This novel finding might suggest a need to emphasize the benefit of consuming oily fish for individuals with a family history of CVD.

RESUMO

We propose a switchable privacy display with liquid crystals for co-driver displays (CDDs) in vehicles. The display minimizes driver distraction while allowing the co-driver to enjoy infotainment content. By combining electrically controllable birefringence (ECB) and hybrid-aligned nematic (HAN) cells, we control the viewing angle of the display. Our device achieves an operating angle of 30°, effectively blocking the driver's view while providing a wide viewing angle for the co-driver. It maintains excellent transmittance properties in privacy and public modes, with symmetric luminance characteristics. The versatility of the proposed display extends to various technologies like LCDs, OLEDs, and micro-LEDs. This switchable privacy display has the potential to enhance driver safety and infotainment experiences in vehicles.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Concern regarding the reliability and accuracy of the health-related information provided by online newspaper articles has increased. Numerous criteria and items have been proposed and published regarding the quality assessment of online information, but there is no standard quality assessment tool available for online newspapers. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop the Health Information Quality Assessment Tool (HIQUAL) for online newspaper articles. METHODS: We reviewed previous health information quality assessment tools and related studies and accordingly developed and customized new criteria. The interrater agreement for the new assessment tool was assessed for 3 newspaper articles on different subjects (colorectal cancer, obesity genetic testing, and hypertension diagnostic criteria) using the Fleiss κ and Gwet agreement coefficient. To compare the quality scores generated by each pair of tools, convergent validity was measured using the Kendall τ ranked correlation. RESULTS: Overall, the HIQUAL for newspaper articles comprised 10 items across 5 domains: reliability, usefulness, understandability, sufficiency, and transparency. The interrater agreement for the article on colorectal cancer was in the moderate to substantial range (Fleiss κ=0.48, SE 0.11; Gwet agreement coefficient=0.74, SE 0.13), while for the article introducing obesity genetic testing it was in the substantial range, with values of 0.63 (SE 0.28) and 0.86 (SE 0.10) for the two measures, respectively. There was relatively low agreement for the article on hypertension diagnostic criteria at 0.20 (SE 0.10) and 0.75 (SE 0.13), respectively. Validity of the correlation assessed with the Kendall τ showed good correlation between tools (HIQUAL vs DISCERN=0.72, HIQUAL vs QUEST [Quality Evaluation Scoring Tool]=0.69). CONCLUSIONS: We developed a new assessment tool to evaluate the quality of health information in online newspaper articles, to help consumers discern accurate sources of health information. The HIQUAL can help increase the accuracy and quality of online health information in Korea.

RESUMO

The optical performance of an asymmetrically surface-anchored liquid crystal (LC) cell driven with three-terminal electrodes is demonstrated. The transmittance of an asymmetrically anchored cell is considerably higher than that of a symmetrically anchored cell. However, the slow response of an asymmetrically anchored cell makes its practical application difficult. In this work, we demonstrate that the slowest GTG response time from a high to low grey level in an asymmetrically anchored cell can be reduced to less than 0.7 ms by applying a vertical trigger pulse with three-terminal electrodes while maintaining the high transmittance of an asymmetrically anchored cell.

RESUMO

This paper presents a dye-doped liquid crystal (LC) phase-grating cell that is switchable between transparent, dark, and opaque states. The device can control haze and transmittance independently. Initially, LC and dye molecules are twist-aligned to make the cell opaque but haze-free due to the absorption of incident light without scattering. Switching to the transparent state could be achieved by applying a vertical electric field, whereas switching to the opaque state could be achieved by applying an in-plane electric field. It exhibited several advantages, such as a low switching voltage (<18 V) and fast response time (<30 ms).

RESUMO

We demonstrated that hybrid anchoring of dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystals (ChLCs) could be used for the simultaneous control of haze and transmittance. Hybrid anchoring of ChLCs can be obtained by the vertical anchoring at one substrate surface and planar anchoring at the other substrate surface. In a ChLC cell with hybrid anchoring, the LCs near the planar alignment layer are in the planar state, while those near the vertical alignment layer are in the focal-conic state. In the initial opaque state, the incident light can be absorbed by the LC mixture in the planar state and scattered by the LCs in the focal-conic state. The ChLC cell with hybrid anchoring exhibited lower transmittance and haze value than those of a focal-conic state in a ChLC cell with vertical anchoring. The cell can be switched to the transparent state without use of a complicated drive scheme at a driving voltage significantly lower than that for a double-layered cell.

RESUMO

The association between vitamin D levels and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been recognized. However, few studies showed independent associations between vitamin D deficiency and NAFLD after a sex-related adjustment for metabolic factors. We aimed to study whether vitamin D deficiency is an independent risk factor of NAFLD even after controlling for metabolic syndrome and visceral fat in both sexes. In this cross-sectional study, 7,514 Korean adults (5,278 men, 2,236 women) participated in a health check-up program. They underwent blood tests, abdominal computed tomography (CT) of the visceral fat area, and ultrasonography for NAFLD screening. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the association of vitamin D deficiency with NAFLD according to the sex differences. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with NAFLD. The adjusted odds ratio (aOR) for NAFLD increased sequentially with decreasing vitamin D level, even after adjusting for metabolic syndrome and visceral fat. The subjects in the vitamin D sufficiency group (20-30 ng/mL) had an aOR for NAFLD of 1.18 (95% CI, 1.00-1.39), whereas the deficiency group (< 20 ng/mL) had an aOR of 1.29 (95% CI, 1.10-1.52). However, we have detected a significant sex-related interaction when analyzing the results. A significant relationship between vitamin D deficiency and NAFLD was found in men (aOR, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.11-1.60) but not in women.

RESUMO

We propose a sunlight-switchable light shutter using liquid crystal/polymer composite doped with push-pull azobenzene. The proposed light shutter is switchable between the translucent and transparent states by application of an electric field or by UV irradiation. Switching by UV irradiation is based on the change of the liquid crystal (LC) clearing point by the photo-isomerization effect of push-pull azobenzene. Under sunlight, the light shutter can be switched from the translucent to the transparent state by the nematic-isotropic phase transition of the LC domains triggered by trans-cis photo-isomerization of the push-pull azobenzene molecules. When the amount of sunlight is low because of cloud cover or when there is no sunlight at sunset, the light shutter rapidly relaxes from its transparent state back to its initial translucent state by the isotropic-nematic phase transition induced by cis-trans back-isomerization of the push-pull azobenzene molecules.

RESUMO

When an electric field is applied to in-plane switching (IPS) and fringe-field switching (FFS) cells with zero rubbing angle, virtual walls are built such that the switching speed can be increased several-fold. In this study, we investigate the dependence on the interdigitated electrode structure of the electro-optical characteristics of IPS and FFS cells with zero rubbing angle. We found that when the rubbing angle is zero, the single-layered IPS electrode structure provides a higher transmittance than the double-layered FFS electrode structure because of the reduced width of dead zones at domain boundaries between interdigitated electrodes. Single-layered IPS electrodes not only minimize the transmittance decrease but also provide a shorter response time than double-layered FFS electrodes, although the operating voltage is higher and fabrication requires a more precise rubbing process. The transmittance decrease due to the zero rubbing angle in an IPS cell can be minimized using optimization of the electrode structure while retaining a short response time.

RESUMO

We propose an alignment method for the near-zero pretilt angle of liquid crystals (LCs) using polyimide films doped with a UV-curable polymer. The near-zero pretilt angle can be obtained by UV curing of reactive mesogen monomers mixed with planar alignment material while a vertical electric field is applied to an LC cell assembled after the rubbing process. We demonstrated that the pretilt angle can be decreased from 2.390° to 0.082° by employing the proposed method.

RESUMO

Recently, low-frequency driving of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels to minimize power consumption has drawn much attention. In the case in which an LCD panel is driven by a fringe-field at a low frequency, the image flickering phenomenon occurs when the sign of the applied electric field is reversed. We investigated image flickering induced by the flexoelectric effect in a fringe-field switching (FFS) liquid crystal cell in terms of the transmittance difference between frames and the ripple phenomenon. Experimental results show that image flicker due to transmittance difference can be eliminated completely and that the ripple phenomena can be reduced significantly by applying a bipolar voltage wave to the FFS cell.

RESUMO

We propose an optical compensation scheme that uses uniaxial films for perfect elimination of light leakage over the entire viewing cone in a homogeneously-aligned liquid crystal cell. Uniaxial films with different dispersion characteristics are used so that they can compensate one another to achieve achromatic optical compensation. Owing to the rotational symmetry of the polarization change on the S(2)-S(3) plane of the Poincaré sphere, we can eliminate the light leakage at all azimuth angles. The contrast ratio of the proposed configuration for white light is higher than 3000:1 at a polar angle of ± 85°, irrespective of the azimuth angle.

RESUMO

We propose an optical compensation scheme through which we can eliminate the off-axis light leakage in a vertically-aligned liquid crystal cell with circular polarizers. In this scheme, four uniaxial films with complementary dispersion characteristics are used to compensate one another, resulting in achromatic effective phase retardation for off-axis angles. By using the proposed optical compensation, a contrast ratio higher than 2000:1 can be realized over the entire 55° viewing cone in a multi-domain vertical-alignment liquid crystal cell with circular polarizers.

RESUMO

AIMS: Our goal was to evaluate the association between antidepressant use and the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) among subjects with no history of coronary heart disease. METHODS: A search of Medline, EMBASE, PsycINFO and the Cochrane Library was performed in January 2013. Two authors independently reviewed and selected eligible observational studies, based on predetermined selection criteria. Pooled relative risks (RRs) with confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using random-effects or fixed-effects models. RESULTS: Sixteen observational studies (seven case-control studies and nine cohort studies) were included in the final analysis. There was no association between selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor use and the risk of CHD overall [odds ratio (OR), 0.93; 95% CI, 0.65-1.33] or in subgroup meta-analysis of case-control studies (OR, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.60-1.37) and cohort studies (RR, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.59-1.55). The use of tricyclic antidepressant was associated with an increased risk of CHD overall (OR, 1.51; 95% CI, 1.07-2.12), but it was observed only in case-control studies (OR, 1.56; 95% CI, 1.24-1.96) and low-quality studies (OR, 1.49; 95% CI, 1.20-1.85) in the subgroup meta-analyses. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis of observational studies in subjects with no history of CHD suggests that neither selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor nor tricyclic antidepressant use is associated with an increased risk of CHD.

RESUMO

We propose a method for fast bistable switching of cholesteric liquid crystals. Fast switching from the focal conic to the planar state can be achieved by applying an in-plane electric field to the device for a short time. The in-plane field induces a transient state, which relaxes rapidly to the initial planar state. We demonstrated that the switching time from the focal conic to the planar state could be reduced from 150 to 5 ms by applying an in-plane field instead of a vertical field. We achieved a total response time of less than 10 ms. The proposed device is applicable to a reflective display and to other optical switching devices requiring both fast response time and low power consumption.

RESUMO

Nutrition labels are helpful for chronic disease management in patients requiring balanced nutritional intake. This study aimed to investigate the association between the use of nutrition labels and chronic diseases (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia) by using the 2008-2009 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. A total of 10,695 individuals aged 20 and over was included in the analysis. Using multiple logistic regressions, there was no difference in nutrition label use between the chronic disease and normal groups (men with hypertension OR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.75-1.27; women with hypertension OR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.67-1.03; men with diabetes OR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.45-1.08; women with diabetes OR, 1.13; 95% CI, 0.84-1.53; men with hyperlipidemia OR, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.59-1.23; women with hyperlipidemia OR, 1.14; 95% CI, 0.91-1.44). In hyperlipidemia patients, awareness (OR, 1.55; 95% CI, 1.03-2.35) and control (OR, 2.19; 95% CI, 2.32-3.63) of disease were related to nutrition label use; however, no significant associations were found for the hypertension and diabetes mellitus patients. Considering the importance of dietary habits in the management of chronic diseases, an improvement in nutrition label use by patients with these diseases is required.

RESUMO

Background: The Web is an important source of health information, but the quality of such online information is highly variable. This study evaluates the quality of health articles published on Naver News, Korea's most popular portal, using the Health Information Quality Assessment Tool (HIQUAL). Methods: We collected 712 health-related articles published on Naver News from May 1 to 7, 2023. After applying exclusion criteria, we selected 116 articles for analysis. Two clinicians independently assessed the quality of these articles using the HIQUAL, which scores articles based on five domains: "reliability," "usefulness," "understandability," "sufficiency," and "transparency." Results: Overall article quality was generally considered recommendable (mean±standard deviation: 7.52±2.00). "Usefulness," one item of "reliability," and "understandability" were the three items with the highest levels of satisfaction. "Sufficiency" criteria for costs, risks, and benefits received low scores. Quality scores for articles focused on health risk factors and intervention showed a statistically significant difference. Conclusion: While the overall quality of health information in Korean online newspaper articles is acceptable, room for improvement remains in some areas, particularly with regard to the fair presentation of costs, risks, and benefits. The study highlights the need for ongoing quality improvement and evaluation initiatives for online health information.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To determine the association between type 2 diabetes mellitus and the consumption of various fruits. METHODS: The Korean Genome And Epidemiology Study is an ongoing prospective longitudinal cohort study of community dwellers and participants (men and women, aged 40-69 years) recruited from the national health examinee registry of Korea. Their individual consumption habits for 12 different fruit types were recorded using food frequency questionnaires. The fruits were then divided into three groups according to their glycemic indexes and glycemic loads. Participants with extreme caloric intakes, pre-existing type 2 diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney diseases, chronic liver diseases, and ongoing cancer treatments were excluded. The incidence of type 2 diabetes in the cohort was identified through self-reporting and supplemented by glycated hemoglobin and fasting blood glucose levels. RESULTS: A total of 2,549 cases of type 2 diabetes were documented during 283,033.8 person-years of follow-up. After adjusting for personal, lifestyle, and dietary risk factors for diabetes, the pooled hazard ratio of type 2 diabetes for every serving per week of total whole fruit consumption was 1.02 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.99-1.06; P=0.2). With mutual adjustment of individual fruits, the pooled hazard ratios of type 2 diabetes for every serving per week were 0.94 (95% CI, 0.88-1.00; P=0.039) for bananas, and 0.90 (95% CI, 0.84-0.96; P<0.001) for grapes. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest associations between the consumption of certain fruits and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. A greater consumption of grapes was significantly associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes in our cohort, but the total amount of fruit consumption was not associated with a reduced risk.

RESUMO

BACKGRUOUND: There is still a lack of research on which diabetic drugs are more effective in preventing stroke. Our network metaanalysis aimed to compare cerebrovascular benefits among glucose-lowering treatments. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and the ClinicalTrials.gov registry for clinical trials from inception through May 25, 2021. We included both prespecified cerebrovascular outcomes and cerebrovascular events reported as severe adverse events. Subgroup analyses were conducted by stroke subtype, publication type, age of patients, baseline glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), duration of type 2 diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular risks. RESULTS: Of 2,861 reports and 1,779 trials screened, 79 randomized controlled trials comprising 206,387 patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria. In the pairwise meta-analysis, the use of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist was associated with a lower risk of total stroke compared with placebo (relative risk [RR], -0.17; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.27 to -0.07). In the network meta- analysis, only the use of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor was associated with a reduction of total stroke, compared with placebo (RR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.67 to 0.98). In the subgroup analyses, the use of SGLT-2 inhibitor and GLP-1 agonist was associated with a lower risk of stroke in those with high HbA1c (≥8.0) and low-risk of cardiovascular disease, respectively. CONCLUSION: SGLT-2 inhibitors and GLP-1 agonists were shown to be beneficial for stroke prevention in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

RESUMO

A novel ultra-broadband polarization rotator with advanced angular adjustability is proposed for functional devices such as displays and smart windows. The new solution offers dynamic control of light polarization across a broad range of wavelengths, encompassing the complete visible spectrum, ultraviolet and near-infrared. Moreover, it boasts a smaller footprint, faster response times, and lower dispersion compared to conventional rotators. The findings are remarkable in that they show that as the viewing angle increases, the hybrid alignment takes on a twist-like configuration, with the polarization rotation angle determined by the spatial variation in the twist angle. This intriguing behavior leads to an improved range of angular adjustability, as the effective polarization rotation depth is extended. The improved angular adjustability of reconfigurable smart devices surpasses the limitations of traditional polarization rotators, unlocking new innovative possibilities. For example, the rotator plays a crucial role in display technologies, allowing for effective control of viewing angles and minimizing reflection from disturbing external light. Similarly, in smart windows, it optimizes energy conservation by regulating direct sunlight transmission while ensuring clear visibility in normal conditions. It is believed that the proposed advanced ultra-broadband polarization rotator is a significant step forward in the development of reconfigurable smart devices.
