RESUMO

The bacterial Efe system functions as an importer of free Fe2+ into cells independently of iron-chelating compounds such as siderophores and consisted of iron-binding protein EfeO, peroxidase EfeB, and transmembrane permease EfeU. While we and other researchers reported crystal structures of EfeO and EfeB, that of EfeU remains undetermined. In this study, we constructed expression system of EfeU derived from Escherichia coli, selected E. coli Rosetta-gami 2 (DE3) as an expression host, and succeeded in purification of the proteins which were indicated to form an oligomer by blue native PAGE. We obtained preliminary data of the X-ray crystallography, suggesting that expression and purification methods we established in this study enable structural analysis of the bacterial Efe system.

BACKGROUND: Donor blood transfusion may potentially affect transplant outcomes through an inflammatory response, recipient sensitization, or transmission of infection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of donor blood transfusion with outcomes of liver transplantation (LT). METHODS: From January 2004 to December 2022, donor blood transfusion information was available for 113,017 adult recipients of LT in the United Network for Organ Sharing database and was classified into 4 levels of transfusion: no-transfusion (N = 68,130), transfusion of 1-5 units (N = 33,629), 6-10 units (N = 8067), and >10 units (N = 5329). Recipient survival analysis was performed by Kaplan-Meier method and multivariable Cox-hazard model. RESULTS: Among this cohort, 40.8% of donors (N = 46,261) received blood transfusion during the index hospitalization. Compared to no-blood transfusion donors, blood transfusion donors were younger (median age 37 versus 46 y P < 0.001) and were more brain death donors (94.5% versus 92.1%, P < 0.001). An increased risk of rejection at 6-mo (transfusion 10.3% versus no-transfusion 9.9%, P = 0.055) and 1 y (transfusion 12.5% versus no-transfusion 11.9%, P = 0.0036) post-LT was noted in this cohort. Multivariable Cox-hazard model showed blood transfusion was associated with increased 1-y mortality (transfusion 1.07; 95% CI 1.02-1.12, P = 0.007) and graft failure (transfusion 1.09; 95% CI 1.04-1.13, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Donor blood transfusion was associated with an increased risk of rejection at 6 mo and 1 y among LT recipients and worse post-transplant graft and overall survival. Additional information regarding donor blood transfusion, along with other known factors, may be considered when deciding the optimization of overall immune suppression in LT recipients to decrease the risk of delayed rejection.

BACKGROUND: Lung transplantation can provide quality of life and survival benefits for patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated end-stage lung disease. Characteristics and outcomes of these lung transplant recipients are limited to mostly single-center experiences or provide a short-term follow-up. METHODS: Characteristics of deceased donors and adult lung transplant recipients for COVID-19-associated end-stage lung disease between August-2020 and June-2022 were analyzed using deidentified United Network for Organ Sharing database. Post-transplant patient survival of COVID-19 recipients was analyzed and compared with non-COVID-19 recipients. Secondary outcomes were length of hospitalization, post-transplant complications, and rates of organ rejection. RESULTS: During the study period, 400 lung transplants for COVID-associated end-stage lung disease comprised 8.7% of all lung transplants performed in United States. In the COVID-19 group, Hispanic males received lung transplants at significantly higher rates. The COVID-19 group was younger and had greater need for intensive care unit stay, mechanical ventilation, hemodialysis, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support, and receipt of antibiotics pre-lung transplant. They had higher lung allocation score, with a shorter wait-list time and received more double lung transplants compared with non-COVID-19 recipients. Post-transplant, the COVID-19 cohort had longer hospital stays, with similar 1-year patient survival (COVID, 86.6% vs non-COVID, 86.3%). Post-transplant, COVID-19-associated deaths were 9.2% of all deaths among lung transplant recipients. CONCLUSIONS: Lung transplantation offers a effective option for carefully selected patients with end-stage lung disease from prior COVID-19, with short-term and long-term outcomes similar to those for lung transplant recipients of non-COVID-19 etiology.

BACKGROUND: The advent of direct-acting antivirals has helped to increase the safe utilization of organs from hepatitis C virus positive (HCV+) donors. However, the outcomes of heart transplantation (HT) using an HCV+ donor are unclear in recipients with underlying liver disease represented by an elevated model for end-stage liver disease excluding international normalized ratio (MELD-XI). METHODS: The United Network of Organ Sharing database was queried from Jan 2016 to Dec 2021. Post-transplant outcomes stratified by recipient MELD-XI score (low <10.37, medium, 10.38-13.39, and high >13.4) was compared between patients with HT from HCV+ (N = 792) and patients with HT from HCV-negative donors (N = 15,266). RESULTS: The median MELD-XI score was comparable (HCV+, 12.1, vs. HCV-negative, 11.8, p = .37). In the HCV+ group, donors were older (33 vs. 31 years, p < .001). Ischemic time of donor hearts (3.48 vs. 3.28 h, p < .001) and travel distance (250 vs. 157 miles, p < .001) were longer in HCV+ group. In the Kaplan Meier analysis with a median follow-up of 750 days, survival was comparable between the two groups (2-year survival, MELD-XI Low: HCV+, 92.4 ± 3.6% vs. HCV-negative, 91.1 ±.8%, p = .83, Medium: HCV+ 89.2 ± 4.3% vs. HCV-negative, 88.2 ± 1.0%, p = .68, and High: HCV+, 84.9 ± 4.5% vs. HCV-negative, 84.6 ± 1.1%, p = .75) In multivariate Cox hazard models, HCV donors were not associated with mortality in each MELD-XI subgroup (Low: adjusted hazard ratio (aHR), 1.02, p = .94; Medium: aHR, .95, p = .81; and High: aHR, .93, p = .68). CONCLUSION: Utilization of HCV+ hearts was not associated with an increased risk of adverse outcomes in recipients with an elevated MELD- XI score.

BACKGROUND: Significant uncertainties remain regarding the utilization of organs for solid organ transplantation (SOT) from donors with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The aim of this study was to assess the trends in utilization of organs from donors with COVID-19 and their short-term outcomes. METHODS: Deceased donors between March 2020 and December 2021 with a positive COVID nucleic acid test from respiratory tract within 14 days of transplantation were analyzed using the de-identified United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database. Donor and recipient characteristics of COVID-19 positive (COVID+) organs were compared to COVID-19 negative (COVID-) organs during this period. We analyzed the trends in the utilization of SOT from COVID+ donors across the United States, donor characteristics, and the quality of donor organ and recipient outcomes (length of hospitalization, rates of organ rejection, delayed graft function, 30-day graft/patient survival). RESULTS: During the study period, 193 COVID+ donors led to the transplantation of 281-kidneys, 106-livers, and 36-hearts in 414 adult recipients. COVID+ patients donated a median of two organs. These donors were younger and had a lower median Kidney Donor Profile Index (0.37 vs. 0.50, p < .001), lower median serum creatinine (0.8 vs. 1.0 mg/dl, p = .003), similar median serum total bilirubin (0.6 mg/dl, p = .46), and similar left ventricular ejection fraction (60%, p = .84) when compared to COVID- donors. Short-term outcomes, including 30-day graft/patient survival, were similar in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Analysis of short-term outcomes from the UNOS database indicates that a positive COVID test in an otherwise medically suitable donor should not preclude consideration of non-lung solid organ transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with cirrhosis undergoing non-liver transplant surgery have a higher risk or adverse events than those without cirrhosis. The main objectives of this study were to describe characteristics, outcomes, and outcome predictors of cirrhotic patients undergoing complex abdominal wall reconstruction (CAWR) with biologic mesh. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study had retrospective and prospective components, including all cirrhotic patients at our center with CAWR for ventral/umbilical hernia repair with biologic mesh between December 2016 and November 2021. RESULTS: We studied 37 patients with cirrhosis. Their mean age was 57.2 years, and 64.9% were male. The median body mass index (BMI) was 28.1kg/m2. Ascites was present in 83.3% of patients. The other most common comorbidities were alcohol abuse (67.6%), hypertension (37.8%), and diabetes (24.3%). All complications in aggregate occurred in 11 patients (29.7%). Six patients (16.2%) underwent reoperation. Surgical site infections (SSIs) occurred in five patients (13.5%). Four deaths occurred within 90 days (11.2% cumulative mortality). By 120 days, there were five deaths (14.2% mortality, but none due to the operation). Seven predictor variables achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) for SSI of 0.963, and two predictors yielded an AUROC of 0.825 for 120-day mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that CAWR for ventral/umbilical hernias among cirrhotic patients is feasible given a dedicated CAWR team in collaboration with transplant surgeons and a transplant hepatologist. The rates of adverse outcomes were low or at the midpoint of the range of the study-specific estimates.

EfeUOB is a siderophore-independent iron uptake mechanism in bacteria. EfeU, EfeO, and EfeB are a permease, an iron-binding or electron-transfer protein, and a peroxidase, respectively. A Gram-negative bacterium, Sphingomonas sp. strain A1, encodes EfeU, EfeO, EfeB together with alginate-binding protein Algp7, a truncated EfeO-like protein (EfeOII), in the genome. The typical EfeO (EfeOI) consists of N-terminal cupredoxin and C-terminal M75 peptidase domains. Here, we detail the structure and function of bacterial EfeB and EfeO. Crystal structures of strain A1 EfeB and Escherichia coli EfeOI were determined at 2.30 Å and 1.85 Å resolutions, respectively. A molecule of heme involved in oxidase activity was bound to the C-terminal Dyp peroxidase domain of EfeB. Two domains of EfeOI were connected by a short loop, and a zinc ion was bound to four residues, Glu156, Glu159, Asp173, and Glu255, in the C-terminal M75 peptidase domain. These residues formed tetrahedron geometry suitable for metal binding and are well conserved among various EfeO proteins including Algp7 (EfeOII), although the metal-binding site (HxxE) is proposed in the C-terminal M75 peptidase domain. This is the first report on structure of a typical EfeO with two domains, postulating a novel metal-binding motif "ExxE-//-D-//-E" in the EfeO C-terminal M75 peptidase domain.

INTRODUCTION: Machine perfusion of heart for donation after circulatory death (DCD) is being increasingly utilized. Current protocols for utilizing heart DCD's machine perfusion might prolong donor warm ischemic time for nonheart organs. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of utilizing heart machine perfusion on liver and kidney transplants from the same donor. METHODS: We analyzed data of DCD donors from the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) from January-2020 to September-2021 among two groups: donors with heart machine perfusion (HM) and without heart machine perfusion (NHM). Propensity score (PS) matching was performed to compare the short-term outcomes of liver and kidney transplants between two groups. RESULTS: Total of 102 liver and 319 kidney transplants were performed using organs from donors with HM. After PS matching, no statistically significant difference was seen in 1-year graft survival (GS) for both liver and kidney transplants between two groups (liver HM 90.6% vs. NHM 90.2%, p = .47; kidney HM 95.2% vs. NHM 92.9%, p = .40). There was no difference in the delayed graft function (DGF) rates in kidney transplantation (KT) (HM 42% vs. NHM 35%, p = .062). CONCLUSION: Utilization of heart machine perfusion in DCD donors had no significant impact on 1-year outcomes of liver and kidney transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Ventral hernia is a common occurrence in patients undergoing solid organ transplant (SOT) and who require complex abdominal wall reconstruction (CAWR). The aim of this study was to analyze the outcomes of CAWR in SOT patients in a tertiary center. METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study in patients who underwent CAWR with biological mesh at our center from January 2016 to November 2021. As per the study protocol, all patients will be followed for 3 years. RESULTS: During the study period, we performed CAWR in 38 SOT patients. The mean age (Standard Deviation: SD) was 61 (9.5) years and the majority were males (68%). Mean body mass index (SD) was 30.3 (5.5) kg/m2 and hernia repair was performed electively in 33 patients. The majority (82%) of the hernias were less than class 2 with a median mesh size (interquartile range) of 600 (400-800) cm2. Seventy-nine percent of patients were liver transplant recipients and the mesh was placed sub-lay (retro-rectus) (82%); the most common technique was posterior component separation (82%). Five patients (13.2%) had surgical site infection and 4 (10.5%) had unplanned reoperations. None of the patients died postoperatively and the 30-day readmission rate was 21%. Three patients (7.9%) had recurrence during follow-up and all of them underwent reoperation. CONCLUSIONS: Complex abdominal wall reconstruction (CAWR) using biologic mesh for solid organ transplant patients with ventral hernia is safe and has low recurrence when performed by a dedicated CAWR team.

INTRODUCTION: Using direct peritoneal resuscitation (DPR) as an adjunct when managing patients undergoing damage control laparotomy (DCL) shows promising results. We report our initial experience in utilizing DPR when managing patients who underwent DCL for emergent surgery at the index operation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively collected data on 37 patients between August 2020 to October 2021 who underwent DCL with open abdomens after the index operation and utilized DPR. DPR was performed using peritoneal lavage with DIANEAL PD-2-D 2.5% Ca 3.5 mEq/L at a rate of 400ml/hour. Patients' physiological scores and clinical outcomes were evaluated. RESULTS: 86% required DCL and DPR due to septic abdomen/bowel ischemia. The median (interquartile range [IQR]) age was 62 years (53-70); 62% were male, and median (IQR) body mass index was 30.0kg/m2 (25.5-38.4). On DPR initiation, median (IQR) APACHE-IV score was 48 (33-64) and median (IQR) Acute Physiology Score (APS) was 31 (18-54). After initiation, median (IQR) APACHE-IV score and median (IQR) APS were 39 (21-62) and 19 (11-56), respectively, and both showed significant improvement in survivors (p<0.05). Median (IQR) DPR duration was four days (2-8) and primary abdominal closure was achieved in 30 patients (81%). There were eight mortalities (21.6%) within 30 days postoperatively, of which seven were within 3-24 days due to uncontrolled sepsis/multiple organ failure. The most frequent complication was surgical-site infection recorded in 12 patients (32%). Twenty-four patients (67%) were discharged home/transferred to a rehab center/nursing home. CONCLUSION: DPR application showed significant improvement of APACHE-IV score and APS in patients with peritonitis/septic abdomen.

AIMS: We aimed to examine the benefits of catheter ablation in patients with non-paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) accompanied by heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), in comparison with the benefits in patients with AF accompanied by HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) or patients with no HF. METHODS AND RESULTS: From 1173 consecutive patients undergoing catheter ablation, 502 with non-paroxysmal AF were divided into three groups: no history of HF [plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) <100 pg/mL and no HF hospitalization; n = 125], HFpEF [left ventricular (LV) EF ≥50%; n = 293], and HF with midrange EF (HFmrEF) + HFrEF (LVEF <50%; n = 84) groups. The endpoints were AF recurrence at 1 year, changes in symptomatic and image-based functional status, and changes in BNP levels from baseline to 1 year. In the HFpEF group, AF recurred in 48 patients (16.4%) and 278 patients (94.8%) had sinus rhythm at 1 year; these values were comparable with those in the other groups. Significant improvement was observed in the left atrial diameter, LVEF, and New York Heart Association functional class in the HFpEF and HFmrEF + HFrEF groups. The BNP level significantly decreased irrespective of the index rate control status, and freedom from AF recurrence was an independent predictor of HF remission, defined as BNP <100 pg/mL at 1 year, in the HFpEF group. CONCLUSION: Catheter ablation is highly feasible for restoring sinus rhythm in non-paroxysmal AF with coexisting HFpEF, thereby improving cardiac function and BNP levels. Catheter ablation for AF may be an optional management strategy.

BACKGROUND: To analyze and report on the changes in epidemiology traumatic causes of death in the USA. METHODS: Data were extracted from the annual National Vital Statistics Reports (2008-2017) from Center for Disease Control and analyzed for trends during the time period given. Generalized additive model was applied to evaluate the significance of trend using R software. RESULTS: Firearm deaths (39,790) and firearm death rate (12.2/100,000) in 2017 were the highest reported, and this increasing trend was significant (p < 0.001) the last ten years. Deaths from motor vehicle crash (MVC) and firearm homicides did not change significantly during the same time period. Firearm deaths were lower than MVC deaths by 21% (8,197/39,790) in 2008, but after 10 years, the difference was only 1% (458/40,231). Years of life lost from firearms is now higher than MVC. Suicides by firearm in 2017 were the highest reported at 23,854/39,773 (60%). In 2017, suicides by firearm victims were predominantly white 20,328/23,562 (85%), men 20,362/23,562 (86%), and the largest group was between the ages of 55-64. CONCLUSIONS: Death from firearms in the USA is increasing and endemic. They were the highest ever reported in 2017 by the CDC. While deaths from MVC used to be the main cause of traumatic death in the USA, deaths from firearms now almost equal it. Calculated years of life lost from firearms is now more than from MVC. Most firearm deaths are not from homicides but are from suicides, and they are predominantly in white older males of the baby boomer generation (born 1946-1964).

Gram-negative Sphingomonas sp. A1 incorporates acidic polysaccharide alginate into the cytoplasm via a cell-surface alginate-binding protein (AlgQ2)-dependent ATP-binding cassette transporter (AlgM1M2SS). We investigated the function of calcium bound to the EF-hand-like motif in AlgQ2 by introducing mutations at the calcium-binding site. The X-ray crystallography of the AlgQ2 mutant (D179A/E180A) demonstrated the absence of calcium binding and significant disorder of the EF-hand-like motif. Distinct from the wild-type AlgQ2, the mutant was quite unstable at temperature of strain A1 growth, although unsaturated alginate oligosaccharides stabilized the mutant by formation of substrate/protein complex. In the assay of ATPase and alginate transport by AlgM1M2SS reconstructed in the liposome, the wild-type and mutant AlgQ2 induced AlgM1M2SS ATPase activity in the presence of unsaturated alginate tetrasaccharide. These results indicate that the calcium bound to EF-hand-like motif stabilizes the substrate-unbound AlgQ2 but is not required for the complexation of substrate-bound AlgQ2 and AlgM1M2SS.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative characteristics of living kidney donors are commonly considered during donor selection and postoperative follow-up. However, the impact of preoperative uric acid (UA) levels is poorly documented. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between preoperative serum UA levels and post-donation long-term events and renal function. METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective analysis of 183 living kidney donors. The donors were divided into high (≥5.5 mg/dl) and low (< 5.5 mg/dl) UA groups. We analyzed the relationship between preoperative UA levels and postoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), as well as adverse events (cardiovascular events and additional prescriptions for hypertension, gout, dyslipidemia, and diabetes mellitus), over 5 years after donation. RESULTS: In total, 44 donors experienced 52 adverse events over 5 years. The incidence of adverse events within 5 years was significantly higher in the high UA group than in the low UA group (50% vs. 24%, p = 0.003); this was true even after the exclusion of hyperuricemia-related events (p = 0.047). UA emerged as an independent risk factor for adverse events (p = 0.012). Donors with higher UA levels had lower eGFRs after donation, whereas body mass index, hemoglobin A1c, blood pressure, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol did not have any impact on the eGFR. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that preoperative UA levels should be considered during donor selection and postoperative follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Elderly patients admitted emergently for ventral hernia may have high rates of complications, including morbidity and mortality. The goal of this study was to retrospectively assess risk factors for in-hospital mortality for elderly patients admitted emergently with a primary diagnosis of ventral hernia. METHODS: Elderly patients with ventral hernia that required emergency admission were analyzed using the National Inpatient Sample database, 2005-2014. Demographics, clinical data, and outcomes were collected. The relationship between mortality and the predictors was assessed using a stratified analysis, multivariable logistic regression model, and multivariable generalized additive model. RESULTS: A total of 33,700 elderly patients were analyzed. The mean (SD) age for males and females was 75 (7.25) and 76.25 (7.75) years, respectively (p<0.001). Approximately 70% of the patients were females. The mean (SD) hospital length of stay (HLOS) was 6.3 (6.5) and 11.6 (13.7) days in survived vs. deceased patients (p<0.001), respectively. Gangrene was present in 1.5% of survivors vs. 5.6% of deceased (p<0.001) patients. Intestinal obstruction was observed in 78% of survivors vs. 88% of deceased patients (p<0.001). Of the 8,554 cases managed non-operatively, 2.1% died. In contrast, in the 25,163 patients who were operated upon, the mortality rate was 2.9%. The mean (SD) HLOS was 7.39 (7.41) days in patients who had an operation vs. 3.82 (3.48) days in those who did not (p<0.0001). Time to operation was 1.12 (1.97) days in survivors vs. 1.81 (3.02) days in deceased patients (p<0.001). In the final multivariable logistic regression model for patients who underwent an operation, delayed operation, elderly male, frailty, invasive diagnostic procedures and presence of gangrene or obstruction were the main risk factors for mortality. In the final model for patients who did not have an operation, age, frailty, presence of gangrene or obstruction and HLOS were the main risk factors for mortality. CONCLUSION: A delayed operation in elderly males and frail patients with intestinal obstruction or gangrene admitted emergently due to ventral hernia significantly increases mortality in this setting.

PURPOSE: Confirmation of bile excretion into the gastrointestinal tract is important to exclude biliary atresia (BA). We compared the duodenal tube test (DTT) with hepatobiliary scintigraphy (HS) for their efficiency in detecting bile secretion. METHODS: The subjects of this retrospective study were 47 infants who underwent both DTT and HS to diagnose or exclude BA between January 2000 and March 2018. RESULTS: BA was diagnosed in 32 of the 47 patients, and 7 of the remaining 15 non-BA patients underwent intraoperative cholangiography. Among the various DTT parameters, the total bile acid in duodenal fluid (DF-TBA)/serum (S) gamma-glutamyl transferase (γGTP) ratio was found to be the most specific for BA, with sensitivity and specificity of 98.0-100%, respectively. One BA patient in whom cut off values were not met was a premature infant. The sensitivity and specificity of HS were 100-56.3%, respectively. The diagnostic accuracy of the DF-TBA/S-γGTP parameter was higher than that of HS (98.6% vs. 85.1%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The DTT could be more a specific method than HS to detect bile excretion. Thus, the DTT should be incorporated into the multidisciplinary diagnostic approach for the differential diagnosis of BA to prevent unnecessary intraoperative cholangiography in patients who do not have BA.

BACKGROUND: Compensation of contralateral kidney function after living-donor kidney donation is well known, and many predictive factors have been proposed. However, no prediction model has been proposed. This study was performed to establish a tool with which to estimate the degree of compensation of the contralateral kidney after living-donor kidney donation. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 133 living donors for renal transplantation in our institution. We defined a favorable compensation as a post-donation estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) at 1 year (calculated by the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation) of > 60% of the pre-donation eGFR. We analyzed the living donors' clinical characteristics and outcomes. RESULTS: The median (range) donor age was 59 (24-79) years, median (range) body mass index was 22.9 (16.8-32.7) kg/m2, and median (range) body surface area was 1.6 (1.3-2.0) m2. All donors were Japanese, and 73% of the donors were biologically related. The median (range) donor pre-donation eGFR was 108.7 (82-144) ml/min/1.73 m2, and the median (range) post-donation eGFR at 1 year was 86.9 (43-143) ml/min/1.73 m2. Eighty-six percent of donors had compensatory hypertrophy. In the univariate analysis, age, female sex, history of hypertension, body surface area, and pre-donation eGFR were significantly associated with hypertrophy (p < 0.05). In the multivariate analysis, age, female sex, history of hypertension, and ratio of the remnant kidney volume to body weight were significantly associated with hypertrophy (p < 0.05). Based on these results, we created a compensation prediction score (CPS). The median (range) CPS was 8.7 (1.1-17.4). Receiver operating characteristic analysis showed strong diagnostic accuracy for predicting favorable compensation (area under the curve, 0.958; 95% confidence interval, 0.925-0.991, p < 0.001). The optimal cut-off value of the CPS was 5.0 (sensitivity, 92.0%; specificity, 89.5%). The CPS had a strong positive correlation with the post-donation eGFR (R = 0.797, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The CPS might be useful tool with which to predict a favorable compensation of the contralateral kidney and remnant kidney function. If the CPS is low, careful management and follow-up might be necessary. Further investigations are needed to validate these findings in larger populations.
