RESUMO

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are attractive materials for realizing solution-processable laser diodes that could benefit from size-controlled emission wavelengths, low optical-gain thresholds and ease of integration with photonic and electronic circuits1-7. However, the implementation of such devices has been hampered by fast Auger recombination of gain-active multicarrier states1,8, poor stability of QD films at high current densities9,10 and the difficulty to obtain net optical gain in a complex device stack wherein a thin electroluminescent QD layer is combined with optically lossy charge-conducting layers11-13. Here we resolve these challenges and achieve amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from electrically pumped colloidal QDs. The developed devices use compact, continuously graded QDs with suppressed Auger recombination incorporated into a pulsed, high-current-density charge-injection structure supplemented by a low-loss photonic waveguide. These colloidal QD ASE diodes exhibit strong, broadband optical gain and demonstrate bright edge emission with instantaneous power of up to 170 µW.

RESUMO

Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) feature a low degeneracy of electronic states at the band edges compared with the corresponding bulk material, as well as a narrow emission linewidth. Unfortunately for potential laser applications, this degeneracy is incompletely lifted in the valence band, spreading the hole population among several states at room temperature. This leads to increased optical gain thresholds, demanding high photoexcitation levels to achieve population inversion (more electrons in excited states than in ground states-the condition for optical gain). This, in turn, increases Auger recombination losses, limiting the gain lifetime to sub-nanoseconds and preventing steady laser action. State degeneracy also broadens the photoluminescence linewidth at the single-particle level. Here we demonstrate a way to decrease the band-edge degeneracy and single-dot photoluminescence linewidth in CQDs by means of uniform biaxial strain. We have developed a synthetic strategy that we term facet-selective epitaxy: we first switch off, and then switch on, shell growth on the (0001) facet of wurtzite CdSe cores, producing asymmetric compressive shells that create built-in biaxial strain, while still maintaining excellent surface passivation (preventing defect formation, which otherwise would cause non-radiative recombination losses). Our synthesis spreads the excitonic fine structure uniformly and sufficiently broadly that it prevents valence-band-edge states from being thermally depopulated. We thereby reduce the optical gain threshold and demonstrate continuous-wave lasing from CQD solids, expanding the library of solution-processed materials that may be capable of continuous-wave lasing. The individual CQDs exhibit an ultra-narrow single-dot linewidth, and we successfully propagate this into the ensemble of CQDs.

RESUMO

Semiconductor nanocrystals with an anisotropic morphology exhibit unique properties, most notably their linear polarization. The colloidal growth of semiconductor nanorods with core dots inside, also referred to as dot-in-rod (DIR) structure, has enabled the synthesis of anisotropic nanocrystals with better stability and controllable fluorescence polarization. In this study, we synthesize CdSe/CdS DIR nanocrystals, in which the position of the CdSe core particle can be controlled by using different ligand compositions during the CdS growth. Varying the core position within the DIR structure, e.g., from the center to the end of the DIR particles, results in a change in the degree of linear polarization. When the core is positioned at the center of the nanorod, the linear polarization turns out to be higher compared with tip-core DIRs. Time-resolved photoluminescence analysis reveals that the center-core DIRs have higher electron-hole interaction than tip-core DIRs because of weak uniaxial strain in center-core DIR that arises from lattice dislocations at the interface to relieve accumulated strain.

RESUMO

Advances in nanotechnology have enabled precise design of catalytic sites for CO2 photoreduction, pushing product selectivity to near unity. However, activity of most nanostructured photocatalysts remains underwhelming due to fast recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and sluggish hole transfer. To address these issues, we construct colloidal CdS nanosheets (NSs) with the large basal planes terminated by S2- atomic layers as intrinsic photocatalysts (CdS-S2- NSs). Experimental investigation reveals that the S2- termination endows ultrathin CdS-S2- NSs with facet-resolved redox-catalytic sites: oxidation occurs on S2--terminated large basal facets and reduction happens on side facets. Such an allocation of redox sites not only promotes spatial separation of photoinduced electrons and holes but also facilitates balanced extraction of holes and electrons by shortening the hole diffusion distance along the (001) direction of the ultrathin NSs. Consequently, the CdS-S2- NSs exhibit superb performance for photocatalytic CO2-to-CO conversion, which was verified by the isotope-labeled experiments to be a record-breaking performance: a CO selectivity of 99%, a CO formation rate of 2.13 mol g-1 h-1, and an effective apparent quantum efficiency of 42.1% under the irradiation (340 to 450 nm) of a solar simulator (AM 1.5G). The breakthrough performance achieved in this work provides novel insights into the precise design of nanostructures for selective and efficient CO2 photoreduction.

RESUMO

There is an evergrowing demand for environment-friendly processes to synthesize ammonia (NH3) from atmospheric nitrogen (N2). Although diazotrophic N2 fixation represents an undeniably "green" process of NH3 synthesis, the slow reaction rate makes it less suitable for industrially meaningful large-scale production. Here, we report the photoinduced N2 fixation using a hybrid system composed of colloidal quantum dots (QDs) and aerobic N2-fixing bacteria, Azotobacter vinelandii. Compared to the case where A. vinelandii cells are simply mixed with QDs, NH3 production increases significantly when A. vinelandii cells are cultured in the presence of core/shell InP/ZnSe QDs. During the cell culture of A. vinelandii, the cellular uptake of QDs is facilitated in the exponential growth phase. Experimental results as well as theoretical calculations indicate that the photoexcited electrons in QDs within A. vinelandii cells are directly transferred to MoFe protein, the catalytic component of nitrogenase. We also observe that the excess amount of QDs left on the outer surface of A. vinelandii disrupts the cellular membrane, leading to the decrease in NH3 production due to the deactivation of nitrogenase. The successful uptake of QDs in QD-A. vinelandii hybrid with minimal amount of QDs on the outer surface of the bacteria is key to efficient photosensitized NH3 production. The comprehensive understanding of the QD-bacteria interface paves an avenue to novel and efficient nanobiohybrid systems for chemical production.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Numerous vaccine strategies are being advanced to control SARS-CoV-2, the cause of the COVID-19 pandemic. EuCorVac-19 (ECV19) is a recombinant protein nanoparticle vaccine that displays the SARS-CoV-2 receptor-binding domain (RBD) on immunogenic nanoliposomes. METHODS: Initial study of a phase 2 randomized, observer-blind, placebo-controlled trial to assess the immunogenicity, safety, and tolerance of ECV19 was carried out between July and October 2021. Two hundred twenty-nine participants were enrolled at 5 hospital sites in South Korea. Healthy adults aged 19-75 without prior known exposure to COVID-19 were vaccinated intramuscularly on day 0 and day 21. Of the participants who received two vaccine doses according to protocol, 100 received high-dose ECV19 (20 µg RBD), 96 received low-dose ECV19 (10 µg RBD), and 27 received placebo. Local and systemic adverse events were monitored. Serum was assessed on days 0, 21, and 42 for immunogenicity analysis by ELISA and neutralizing antibody response by focus reduction neutralization test (FRNT). RESULTS: Low-grade injection site tenderness and pain were observed in most participants. Solicited systemic adverse events were less frequent, and mostly involved low-grade fatigue/malaise, myalgia, and headache. No clinical laboratory abnormalities were observed. Adverse events did not increase with the second injection and no serious adverse events were solicited by ECV19. On day 42, Spike IgG geometric mean ELISA titers were 0.8, 211, and 590 Spike binding antibody units (BAU/mL) for placebo, low-dose and high-dose ECV19, respectively (p < 0.001 between groups). Neutralizing antibodies levels of the low-dose and high-dose ECV19 groups had FRNT50 geometric mean values of 129 and 316, respectively. Boosting responses and dose responses were observed. Antibodies against the RBD correlated with antibodies against the Spike and with virus neutralization. CONCLUSIONS: ECV19 was generally well-tolerated and induced antibodies in a dose-dependent manner that neutralized SARS-CoV-2. The unique liposome display approach of ECV19, which lacks any immunogenic protein components besides the antigen itself, coupled with the lack of increased adverse events during boosting suggest the vaccine platform may be amenable to multiple boosting regimes in the future. Taken together, these findings motivate further investigation of ECV19 in larger scale clinical testing that is underway. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov as # NCT04783311.

RESUMO

Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) causes severe respiratory illness and has a high mortality of ∼34%. However, since its discovery in 2012, an effective vaccine has not been developed for it. To develop a vaccine against multiple strains of MERS-CoV, we targeted spike glycoprotein (S) using prime-boost vaccination with DNA and insect cell-expressed recombinant proteins for the receptor-binding domain (RBD), S1, S2, SΔTM, or SΔER. Our S subunits were generated using an S sequence derived from the MERS-CoV EMC/2012 strain. We examined humoral and cellular immune responses of various combinations with DNA plasmids and recombinant proteins in mice. Mouse sera immunized with SΔER DNA priming/SΔTM protein boosting showed cross-neutralization against 15 variants of S-pseudovirions and the wild-type KOR/KNIH/002 strain. In addition, these immunizations provided full protection against the KOR/KNIH/002 strain challenge in human DPP4 knock-in mice. These findings suggest that vaccination with the S subunits derived from one viral strain can provide cross-protection against variant MERS-CoV strains with mutations in S. DNA priming/protein boosting increased gamma interferon production, while protein-alone immunization did not. The RBD subunit alone was insufficient to induce neutralizing antibodies, suggesting the importance of structural conformation. In conclusion, heterologous DNA priming with protein boosting is an effective way to induce both neutralizing antibodies and cell-mediated immune responses for MERS-CoV vaccine development. This study suggests a strategy for selecting a suitable platform for developing vaccines against MERS-CoV or other emerging coronaviruses.IMPORTANCE Coronavirus is an RNA virus with a higher mutation rate than DNA viruses. Therefore, a mutation in S-protein, which mediates viral infection by binding to a human cellular receptor, is expected to cause difficulties in vaccine development. Given that DNA-protein vaccines promote stronger cell-mediated immune responses than protein-only vaccination, we immunized mice with various combinations of DNA priming and protein boosting using the S-subunit sequences of the MERS-CoV EMC/2012 strain. We demonstrated a cross-protective effect against wild-type KOR/KNIH/002, a strain with two mutations in the S amino acids, including one in its RBD. The vaccine also provided cross-neutralization against 15 different S-pseudotyped viruses. These suggested that a vaccine targeting one variant of S can provide cross-protection against multiple viral strains with mutations in S. The regimen of DNA priming/Protein boosting can be applied to the development of other coronavirus vaccines.

RESUMO

The application of colloidal semiconductor quantum dots as single-dot light sources still requires several challenges to be overcome. Recently, there has been considerable progress in suppressing intensity fluctuations (blinking) by encapsulating an emitting core in a thick protective shell. However, these nanostructures still show considerable fluctuations in both emission energy and linewidth. Here we demonstrate type-I core/shell heterostructures that overcome these deficiencies. They are made by combining wurtzite semiconductors with a large, directionally anisotropic lattice mismatch, which results in strong asymmetric compression of the emitting core. This modifies the structure of band-edge excitonic states and leads to accelerated radiative decay, reduced exciton-phonon interactions, and suppressed coupling to the fluctuating electrostatic environment. As a result, individual asymmetrically strained dots exhibit highly stable emission energy (<1 meV standard deviation) and a subthermal room-temperature linewidth (~20 meV), concurrent with nearly nonblinking behaviour, high emission quantum yields, and a widely tunable emission colour.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Availability of public toilets in parklands and open spaces is a community resource for all persons and may support self-management of incontinence. The purpose of this study was to describe and map the availability of public toilets in parklands and open spaces in major international cities by city population and area. METHODS: Observational/descriptive design. Twelve cities in nine countries with available data about toilets in parklands (Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP), New York City, Philadelphia, Toronto, and Osaka) or open spaces (Greater London, Greater Sydney, Paris, Berlin, Brussels, and Seoul) were included in the analysis. Data were from online open/free data sets. Availability of publicly owned and/or operated permanent toilet facilities was measured/analyzed as number, density (calculated by population and area (km2)), and distribution (visualized using Geographic Information Systems). RESULTS: Density of public toilets/area (km2) in parklands was highest in Osaka. MSP had the most toilets per 100,000 residents. In open spaces, the density of public toilets/area (km2) was highest in Paris. Sydney had the most toilets in open spaces per 100,000 residents. The distribution of public toilets across parklands was fairly even in MSP, Philadelphia, and Toronto. The distribution of public toilets in open spaces was highly concentrated in one area in Brussels. Sydney has a low population density but a high toilet density in open spaces. CONCLUSIONS: Availability of public toilets in parklands or open spaces varies among international cities. Toilet availability should be considered in urban planning and community healthcare programs to promote continence, health, and quality of life.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There has been a recent, rapid increase in the number of studies of children with medical complexity (CMC) and their families. There is a need for attention to gaps and patterns in this emerging field of study. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this scoping review was to identify patterns and gaps in the evidence related to classification systems, data, and outcomes in studies of CMC. DATA SOURCES: We searched peer-reviewed journals for reports of quantitative studies focused on CMC outcomes published between 2008 and 2018. On the basis of a structured screening process, we selected 63 reports that met our inclusion criteria. STUDY APPRAISAL AND SYNTHESIS: We used the methodological framework for scoping studies described by Arskey and O'Malley to map relevant literature in the field and the ECHO model to categorize studies according to three health outcome domains (economic, clinical, and humanistic). RESULTS: The terminology used to describe and classify CMC differed across studies depending on outcome domain. Two thirds of the reports focused on economic outcomes; fewer than a quarter included child or family quality of life as an outcome. A majority of studies used a single source of data, with robust analyses of administrative, payer, and publicly available data. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS OF KEY FINDINGS: Research on CMC and their families would benefit from standardization of terms and classification systems, the use of measurement strategies that map humanistic outcomes as trajectories, and more attention to outcomes identified as most meaningful to CMC and their families.

RESUMO

Chemically synthesized semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) can potentially enable solution-processable laser diodes with a wide range of operational wavelengths, yet demonstrations of lasing from the QDs are still at the laboratory stage. An important challenge-realization of lasing with electrical injection-remains unresolved, largely due to fast nonradiative Auger recombination of multicarrier states that represent gain-active species in the QDs. Here we present population inversion and optical gain in colloidal nanocrystals realized with direct-current electrical pumping. Using continuously graded QDs, we achieve a considerable suppression of Auger decay such that it can be outpaced by electrical injection. Further, we apply a special current-focusing device architecture, which allows us to produce high current densities (j) up to ∼18 A cm-2 without damaging either the QDs or the injection layers. The quantitative analysis of electroluminescence and current-modulated transmission spectra indicates that with j = 3-4 A cm-2 we achieve the population inversion of the band-edge states.

RESUMO

Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are a highly promising materials platform for implementing solution-processable light-emitting diodes (LEDs). They combine high photostability of traditional inorganic semiconductors with chemical flexibility of molecular systems, which makes them well-suited for large-area applications such as television screens, solid-state lighting, and outdoor signage. Additional beneficial features include size-controlled emission wavelengths, narrow bandwidths, and nearly perfect emission efficiencies. State-of-the-art QD-LEDs exhibit high internal quantum efficiencies approaching unity. However, these peak values are observed only at low current densities ( J) and correspondingly low brightnesses, whereas at higher J, the efficiency usually exhibits a quick roll-off. This efficiency droop limits achievable brightness levels and decreases device longevity due to excessive heat generation. Here, we demonstrate QD-LEDs operating with high internal efficiencies (up to 70%) virtually droop-free up to unprecedented brightness of >100,000 cd m-2 (at ∼500 mA cm-2). This exceptional performance is derived from specially engineered QDs that feature a compositionally graded interlayer and a final barrier layer. This QD design allows for improved balance between electron and hole injections combined with considerably suppressed Auger recombination, which helps mitigate efficiency losses due to charge imbalance at high currents. These results indicate a significant potential of newly developed QDs as enablers of future ultrabright, highly efficient devices for both indoor and outdoor applications.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To examine associations of data-driven intervention approaches (IAs) with the outcomes of adolescent or adult Latina mothers with or without the Mental health problem. DESIGN AND SAMPLE: Retrospective observational study using public health nurse (PHN)-generated data for 676 Latina mothers aged 14-52. MEASURES: Mothers' age, having the Mental health problem, number of problems and interventions, and Knowledge, Behavior, and Status scores using the Omaha System. Mother-specific percentages of interventions to the total number received were calculated. Visualizations and statistical tests were used to analyze the association of IAs relating mothers' characteristics, problems, interventions, and outcomes. RESULTS: Four IAs were discovered. Sample characteristics differed significantly among IAs by age and having the Mental health problems. There was a small effect of age on outcomes (<0.10). PHNs differentially addressed problems in IA1-IA4 compared with IA2-IA3 (p < 0.001). Mothers who received IA3 had the most improvement and highest scores in Knowledge and Behavior (all p < 0.001). Mothers who received IA2 had the most improvement and highest scores in Status (both p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The IAs were associated with outcomes differentially among Latina mothers, depending on multiple complex factors. These methods may be useful in understanding intervention tailoring and should be replicated with other populations and datasets.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The principal aim of this study was to map and describe the availability of parkland public toilets in major US cities per population and area. DESIGN: Observational and descriptive. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: Data were collected from the following cities: Austin, Texas; Minneapolis-St Paul (MSP), Minnesota; Nashville, Tennessee; New York City (NYC), New York; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; San Francisco, California (SFC); Seattle, Washington; and Tampa, Florida. These cities are located throughout the United States. METHODS: Data from the US Census and cities' parks/recreation departments about publicly owned and operated permanent toilet facilities were analyzed and then mapped using geographic information systems. Toilet density by population and residential area (mi) was calculated, and toilet distribution was visualized. RESULTS: When calculated per 100,000 residents, MSP had the most parkland public toilets with 24; Tampa, Seattle, and Philadelphia had 17 to 22; and Nashville, NYC, and SFC had the fewest, around 7 toilets. Parkland public toilet density per residential area was highest in NYC and Philadelphia (>2/mi), followed by MSP, Seattle, and SFC (1/mi), then Tampa, Austin, and Nashville (<1/mi). The proportion of Census tracts containing parkland public toilets was more than 0.4 in MSP, Seattle, Tampa, and Philadelphia, more than 0.20 in Nashville and Austin, and less than 0.20 in the other cities. Toilet mapping showed fairly even distribution across Census tracts in MSP, Seattle, Tampa, and Philadelphia. CONCLUSIONS: Availability of parkland public toilets was highest in MSP and lowest in SFC. Findings inform WOC nurses for counseling incontinent patients about self-management strategies. Urban planning that provides an adequate number and distribution of parkland public toilets may improve quality of life.

RESUMO

The field of nanocrystal quantum dots (QDs) is already more than 30 years old, and yet continuing interest in these structures is driven by both the fascinating physics emerging from strong quantum confinement of electronic excitations, as well as a large number of prospective applications that could benefit from the tunable properties and amenability toward solution-based processing of these materials. The focus of this review is on recent advances in nanocrystal research related to applications of QD materials in lasing, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and solar energy conversion. A specific underlying theme is innovative concepts for tuning the properties of QDs beyond what is possible via traditional size manipulation, particularly through heterostructuring. Examples of such advanced control of nanocrystal functionalities include the following: interface engineering for suppressing Auger recombination in the context of QD LEDs and lasers; Stokes-shift engineering for applications in large-area luminescent solar concentrators; and control of intraband relaxation for enhanced carrier multiplication in advanced QD photovoltaics. We examine the considerable recent progress on these multiple fronts of nanocrystal research, which has resulted in the first commercialized QD technologies. These successes explain the continuing appeal of this field to a broad community of scientists and engineers, which in turn ensures even more exciting results to come from future exploration of this fascinating class of materials.

RESUMO

Auger recombination is a nonradiative three-particle process wherein the electron-hole recombination energy dissipates as a kinetic energy of a third carrier. Auger decay is enhanced in quantum-dot (QD) forms of semiconductor materials compared to their bulk counterparts. Because this process is detrimental to many prospective applications of the QDs, the development of effective approaches for suppressing Auger recombination has been an important goal in the QD field. One such approach involves "smoothing" of the confinement potential, which suppresses the intraband transition involved in the dissipation of the electron-hole recombination energy. The present study evaluates the effect of increasing "smoothness" of the confinement potential on Auger decay employing a series of CdSe/CdS-based QDs wherein the core and the shell are separated by an intermediate layer of a CdSexS1-x alloy comprised of 1-5 sublayers with a radially tuned composition. As inferred from single-dot measurements, use of the five-step grading scheme allows for strong suppression of Auger decay for both biexcitons and charged excitons. Further, due to nearly identical emissivities of neutral and charged excitons, these QDs exhibit an interesting phenomenon of lifetime blinking for which random fluctuations of a photoluminescence lifetime occur for a nearly constant emission intensity.

RESUMO

Quantum dots (QDs) of ternary I-III-VI2 compounds such as CuInS2 and CuInSe2 have been actively investigated as heavy-metal-free alternatives to cadmium- and lead-containing semiconductor nanomaterials. One serious limitation of these nanostructures, however, is a large photoluminescence (PL) line width (typically >300 meV), the origin of which is still not fully understood. It remains even unclear whether the observed broadening results from considerable sample heterogeneities (due, e.g., to size polydispersity) or is an unavoidable intrinsic property of individual QDs. Here, we answer this question by conducting single-particle measurements on a new type of CuInS2 (CIS) QDs with an especially thick ZnS shell. These QDs show a greatly enhanced photostability compared to core-only or thin-shell samples and, importantly, exhibit a strongly suppressed PL blinking at the single-dot level. Spectrally resolved measurements reveal that the single-dot, room-temperature PL line width is much narrower (down to ∼60 meV) than that of the ensemble samples. To explain this distinction, we invoke a model wherein PL from CIS QDs arises from radiative recombination of a delocalized band-edge electron and a localized hole residing on a Cu-related defect and also account for the effects of electron-hole Coulomb coupling. We show that random positioning of the emitting center in the QD can lead to more than 300 meV variation in the PL energy, which represents at least one of the reasons for large PL broadening of the ensemble samples. These results suggest that in addition to narrowing size dispersion, future efforts on tightening the emission spectra of these QDs might also attempt decreasing the "positional" heterogeneity of the emitting centers.

RESUMO

Nanocrystal quantum dots (QDs) are attractive materials for applications as laser media because of their bright, size-tunable emission and the flexibility afforded by colloidal synthesis. Nonradiative Auger recombination, however, hampers optical amplification in QDs by rapidly depleting the population of gain-active multiexciton states. In order to elucidate the role of Auger recombination in QD lasing and isolate its influence from other factors that might affect optical gain, we study two types of CdSe/CdS core/shell QDs with the same core radii and the same total sizes but different properties of the core/shell interface ("sharp" vs "smooth"). These samples exhibit distinctly different biexciton Auger lifetimes but are otherwise virtually identical. The suppression of Auger recombination in the sample with a smooth (alloyed) interface results in a notable improvement in the optical gain performance manifested in the reduction of the threshold for amplified spontaneous emission and the ability to produce dual-color lasing involving both the band-edge (1S) and the higher-energy (1P) electronic states. We develop a model, which explicitly accounts for the multiexciton nature of optical gain in QDs, and use it to analyze the competition between stimulated emission from multiexcitons and their decay via Auger recombination. These studies re-emphasize the importance of Auger recombination control for the realization of real-life QD-based lasing technologies and offer practical strategies for suppression of Auger recombination via "interface engineering" in core/shell structures.

Water-soluble cationic conjugated poly(phenylene vinylene) (PPV) and cationic fullerene were complexed with negatively charged single stranded DNA and double stranded DNA via electrostatic interactions to achieve photoinduced charge transfer with efficiencies as high as those observed from oppositely charged, cationic PPV and anionic fullerene but with distinctly different quenching mechanisms.
