RESUMO

Using an innovative time-varying front-end electronics in conjunction with a bulky coaxial high-purity germanium detector, we were able to extend the range of the radionuclide spectra well beyond the analog to digital converter (ADC) saturation point. The electronics automatically conditions the signal for digital-filtering optimization if it is in the ADC voltage range and for time-over-threshold analysis if it exceeds the ADC range. A high spectroscopic resolution has been achieved in both operation ranges. An unprecedented wide energy range from 5 keV to 150 MeV of equivalent energy, or 90 dB, has been obtained using a single acquisition chain, while maintaining a high-energy resolution in the whole spectrum. For example, with an ADC range of 3 MeV a resolution has been obtained of 1.3/2.2 keV full width at half maximum on the 122/1332 keV gamma-ray lines of 57Co and 60Co, and of <0.4% in the time-over-threshold region, or for energy deposits beyond 3 MeV.

RESUMO

Conversion electron spectroscopy represents an important tool for nuclear structure analysis of medium and heavy nuclei. Two iron-free magnetic electron spectrometers of the orange type have been installed at the Institute for Nuclear Physics of the University of Cologne. The very large transmission of 15% and the very good energy resolution of 1% makes the iron-free orange spectrometer a powerful instrument. By means of fast timing techniques, lifetimes of nuclear excited states can be measured with an accuracy better than 20 ps. For the first time, the energy dependent centroid position of prompt events yielding the time-walk characteristics (the prompt curve) of the orange spectrometer fast timing setup has been measured using prompt secondary δ-electrons generated in a pulsed beam experiment. The prompt curve calibrated as a function of energy allows precise lifetime determination down to a few tens of picoseconds by the use of the centroid shift method.

RESUMO

We report on the first low-energy Coulomb excitation measurements with radioactive Ipi=6- beams of odd-odd nuclei 68,70Cu. The beams were produced at ISOLDE, CERN and were post-accelerated by REX-ISOLDE to 2.83 MeV/nucleon. Gamma rays were detected with the MINIBALL spectrometer. The 6- beam was used to study the multiplet of states (3-, 4-, 5-, 6-) arising from the pi2p3/2 nu 1g9/2 configuration. The 4- state of the multiplet was populated via Coulomb excitation and the B(E2;6--->4-) value was determined in both nuclei. The results obtained illustrate the fragile stability of the Z=28 shell and N=40 subshell closures. A comparison with large-scale shell-model calculations using the 56Ni core shows the importance of the proton excitations across the Z=28 shell gap to the understanding of the nuclear structure in the neutron-rich nuclei with N approximately 40.

RESUMO

Frequency and width crossing have been observed for two coupled resonances in a microwave cavity. The cavity consisted of two nearly identical rectangular boxes. The boxes were coupled by a slit of variable width. The data are well described by a non-Hermitean S matrix leading to a 2x2 non-Hermitean effective Hamiltonian. The values of the interaction strength |v| for which width crossing and frequency crossing, respectively, were observed, are above and below a critical value |v(c)| for which one expects a joint frequency and width crossing.
