RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The core musculature gets activated by feed forward fashion during the movement of upper extremity, as in kinetic chain of throwing, shoulder muscle contributes larger dynamic balance and also in reversed manner. Aim of the current study was to associate the strength of core and the dynamic balance of throwing hand in cricket fast bowlers. METHODS: 72 subjects were initially screened for eligibility, and ultimately, 55 male participants from various cricket coaching academies, aged 19.1 ± 2.6 on average, were included. The mean BMI of the participants was 20.9. The assessments included the Modified Upper Quarter Y Balance Test (mUQYBT)- Medial (M), Supero-Lateral reach (SL), Infero-Lateral reach(IL) along with Core measures- 600 Abdominal flexion test (600 AFT), right side plank test (RSP), Left side plank test (LSP), Beiring Sorenson test (BST), all of which were successfully completed. RESULTS: Based on our findings, we observed a mild positive correlation between the values of mUQYBT and core measures. We employed Pearson's coefficient to evaluate the association, and the R2 values were utilized to quantify the amount of variability. The resulting scores were RSP to SL (r = 0.38, R2 = 0.14), LSP to SL (r = 0.43, R2 = 0.19), LSP to RSP (r = 0.790, R2 = 0.62), BSP to Composite score (r = 0.29, R2 = 0.08), SL to 600 AFT* (r = 0.231, R2 = 0.05) and BMI to IL* (r = -0.107, R2 = 0.01). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, a positive correlation was exhibited between dynamic balance and core strength in healthy cricket fast bowlers. Educating bowlers on proper movement techniques and prescribing targeted exercises can enhance dynamic balance, reducing the risk of injuries.

RESUMO

AIM: Complete dentures (CDs) are fabricated to rehabilitate the edentulous. Severe residual ridge resorption (RRR) compromises CD functionality, adversely affecting function, appearance, systemic health, and quality of life. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: The purpose of this study was to assess the benefit, if any, of calcium and Vitamin D supplementation on the rate of RRR. Retarding RRR would improve treatment prognosis and make CD fabrication less demanding. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This longitudinal, parallel, open-label randomized study was conducted in the Department of Prosthodontics of the institute. One hundred and fifty edentulous subjects underwent bone mineral density (BMD) assessment followed by CD fabrication to measure RR height and width with computerized tomographic (CT) scans. Subjects were randomized to oral supplementation group - S, given combined Vitamin D and calcium daily, and nonsupplementation group - NS. Subjects from both the groups were followed up with repeat BMD test and CT scan after 12 months. Mean BMD, RR height and width, and RRR values were collected, analyzed, and compared for the two groups using STATA 17. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED AND RESULTS: Baseline mean T-score, RR height, and RR width were - 1.84, 22.30 mm, and 4.25 mm, respectively, for the sample. In both Groups S and NS, a statistically significant decrease in mandibular RR height (P = 0.000 for both) and width (P = 0.027 and 0.003, respectively) was observed at 1-year follow-up. There was a statistically insignificant difference between Groups S and NS for mean BMD, T-score, RR height and width, and RRR at both baseline and 12-month follow-up. One-year RRR rate for Group S (1.30 mm) was insignificantly lesser than for group NS (1.33 mm). CONCLUSION: Short-term oral calcium and Vitamin D supplementation was ineffective in reducing RRR and improving BMD.

RESUMO

A bacterium producing an alkaline protease was isolated from the Lonar soda lake, Buldhana district (19 degrees 58' N; 76 degrees 31' E), Maharashtra, India. The most appropriate medium for the growth and protease production was composed of (g/L): casein 10; yeast extract 4; KH2PO4 0.5, K2HPO4 0.5 and CaCl2 0.5. The enzyme showed maximum activity with and without 5 mM Ca2+ at 70 and 60 degrees C, respectively. The enzyme retained 40 and 82% of its initial activity after heating for 60 min at 60 degrees C, in absence and presence of 5 mM CaCl2 respectively. The enzyme remained active and stable at pH 8-12, with an optimum at pH 10. The enzyme showed stability towards non-ionic and anionic surfactants, and oxidizing agents. It also showed excellent stability and compatibility with commonly used laundry detergents. Wash performance analysis revealed that enzyme could effectively remove blood stains. It also showed decomposition of gelatinous coating on X- ray film.

RESUMO

Gram-positive rod-shaped thermophilic bacteria were isolated using samples collected from terrestrial natural thermal spring located at Unkeshwar (Longitude 78.22 degree East to 78.34 degree East, Latitude 19 degree 34' North to 19 degree 40' North), District Nanded, Maharashtra State, India. The isolates were then cultivated using selective media and identified using culture-dependent techniques. One prominent isolate (UN1) exhibited high temperature stability and remarkable amylase production and was identified as Bacillus licheniformis. Amylase production was carried out in starch media and the enzyme was partially purified and characterized for optimization of pH and temperature. Amylolytic activity of the enzyme was determined. Nanoactivator-mediated modifications were carried out to enhance amylolytic activity of the partially purified amylase. Three-fold increase in catalytic efficiency of amylase was obtained after modification.

RESUMO

Aim: The aim of this study was to compare and assess bone density changes around immediate functionally and nonfunctionally loaded implants. Settings and design: In vivo comparative study. Materials and Methods: Sixty participants selected based on the predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria received single tooth implants in mandible under two implant loading protocols: Immediate functionally loaded (IFL) and immediate nonfunctionally loaded (INFL). Randomization was done by computer-aided simple randomization procedure. Self-tapering, aggressive SLA implants were placed in the single tooth edentulous sites of mandible in both the groups. Three-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography (3D CBCT) was taken at baseline, 3 and 6 months postimplant placement. Quantitative analysis of the bone density was performed using 3D CBCT in three areas around the implants at crestal, middle, and apical regions of implants. Statistical Analysis Used: Quantitative data were summarized as mean ± standard deviation. Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS software version 21.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) by unpaired t-test. Results: Bone density changes after implant placement in IFL group from baseline to 3 months were; crestal region (314.18 ± 71.69), middle (278.23 ± 70.17), apical (274.70 ± 59.79) and changes from 3 to 6 months were; crestal (-105.55 ± 39.60), middle (-114.80 ± 41.46), apical (-141.88 ± 69.58). Bone density changes after implant placement in INFL group from baseline to 3 months were crestal region (199.42 ± 47.97), middle (56.91 ± 10.39), apical (200.98 ± 67.43) and changes from 3 to 6 months were; crestal (-194.38 ± 75.30), middle (-204.40 ± 63.75), apical (-191.28 ± 62.33). Conclusions: It was concluded that INFL implant group showed better bone density when compared to IFL implant group.

RESUMO

In the developing area of modern nanobiotechnology, the research is being focused on enhancement of catalytic performance in terms of efficiency and stability of enzymes to fulfill the industrial demand. In the context of this interdisciplinary era, we isolated and identified alkaline protease producer Bacillus aryabhattai P1 by polyphasic approach and then followed one variable at a time approach to optimize protease production from P1. The modified components of fermentation medium (g/L) were wheat bran 10, soybean flour 10, yeast extract 5, NaCl 10, KH2PO4 1, K2HPO4 1 and MgSO4·7H2O 0.2 (pH 9). The optimum alkaline protease production from P1 was recorded 75 ± 3 U/mg at 35 °C and pH 9 after 96 h of fermentation period. Molecular weight of partially purified P1 alkaline protease was 26 KDa as revealed by SDS-PAGE. Calcium based nanoceramic material was prepared by wet chemical precipitation method and doped in native P1 protease for catalytic activity enhancement. Catalytic activity of modified P1 protease was attained by nanoactivator mediated modulation was more by 5.58 fold at pH 10 and 30 °C temperature. The nanoceramic material named as nanoactivator, with grain size of 40-60 nm was suitable to redesign the active site of P1 protease. Such types of modified proteases can be used in different nanobiotechnological applications.

RESUMO

Alkaline proteases are one of the industrially important enzymes and generally preferred from alkaliphilic sources. Here we have provided the data on optimized production and characterization of alkaline proteases from five newly isolated and identified alkaliphiles from Lonar soda lake, India. The data provided for optimization of physicochemical parameters for maximum alkaline proteases production is based on OVAT (one variable at a time) approach. Alkaline protease production (U/mL) recorded by using different agro industrial residues is included in the given data. Further readers can find more information in our previously published research article where we have already described about the methods used and comparative analysis of the data recorded regarding optimized production, characterization and application of alkaline proteases isolated from Lonar soda lake isolates (http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.bcab.2016.06.002) [1]. The data provided here by us is useful to other researchers for setting up various suitable statistical models to perform optimization studies other than OVAT approach.
