RESUMO

We report herein a porous supramolecular framework formed by a linear mononuclear Au(I) complex (1) via the tongue-and-groove-like joinery between the pentiptycene U-cavities (grooves) and the rod-shaped π-conjugated backbone and alkyl chains (tongues) with the assistance of C-H···π and aurophilic interactions. The framework contains distorted tetrahedral Au4 units, which undergo stepwise and persistent photoinduced Au(I)-Au(I) bond shortening (excited-state aurophilicity), leading to multicolored luminescence photochromism. The one-dimensional pore channels could accommodate different solvates and guests, and the guest inclusion-induced luminescence enhancement (up to 300%) and/or vapochromism are characterized. A correlation between the aurophilic bonding and the luminescence activity is uncovered by TDDFT calculations. Isostructural derivatives 2 and 3 corroborate both the robustness of the porous supramolecular assembly and the mechanisms of the stimulation-induced luminescence properties of 1. This work demonstrates the cooperation of aurophilicity and structural porosity and adaptability in achieving novel supramolecular photochemical properties.

RESUMO

In this study we found that 2,6-dimethanolpyridine displays good complementarity toward di(ethylene glycol) for the complexation of Na+ ions, allowing us to use this recognition system for the efficient synthesis of hetero[2]catenanes; indeed, it allowed us to attach multiple copies of [2]catenanes to branched systems presenting multiple isophthalaldehyde units. When we attempted to form a catenane from a preformed macrocycle featuring only a single di(ethylene glycol) unit, reacting it with a di(ethylene glycol) derivative presenting two amino termini, isophthalaldehyde, and templating Na+ ions [i.e., with the aim of using di(ethylene glycol)·Na+·di(ethylene glycol) recognition to template the formation of the interlocked imino macrocycle], the yields of the hetero[2]catenane and homo[2]catenane, comprising two imino macrocyclic units, were both poor (14% and 7%, respectively). In contrast, when one or two 2,6-dimethanolpyridine units were present in the preformed macrocycles, their reactions with the same diamine, dialdehyde, and Na+ ions provided the hetero[2]catenanes with high selectivity and efficiency (44% and 64% yields, respectively), with minimal formation of the competing homo[2]catenane. The high complementary of the 2,6-dimethanolpyridine·Na+·di(ethylene glycol) ligand pair allowed us to synthesize [2]catenane dimers and trimers directly from corresponding isophthalaldehyde-presenting cores, with yields, after subsequent reduction and methylation, of 42% and 31%, respectively.

RESUMO

Anthracene-pentiptycene hybrid systems 1-Cn, where n refers to the number of carbon atoms in the linear alkyl chain, crystallize in three different polymorphs, denoted Y (yellow), G (green), and B (blue) forms in terms of the fluorescence color. While all Y-form crystals show the same yellow-to-blue fluorescence color response to the photomechanical stress generated by the anthracene [4+4] photodimerization reaction, the four G forms exhibit distinct photomechanofluorochromism (PMFC): from green to blue for G-1-C4, to orange for G-1-C7, to red for G-1-C8, and to red then blue for G-1-C9, and the B forms show no photochromic activity. The intriguing RGB three-color PMFC and abnormal topochemical reactivity of G-1-C9 are attributed to inherent softness of the crystal lattice.

RESUMO

Multiple-stimuli-responsive photoluminescence films based on a ZnII -organic framework, {[Zn2 (Htpim)(3,4-pydc)2 ]⋅4 DMF⋅4 H2 O}n (1, Htpim=2,4,5-tri(4-pyridyl)imidazole, 3,4-H2 pydc=3,4-pyridinedicarboxylic acid), were fabricated. This compound consisted of a 2D corrugated layer, {Zn(3,4-pydc)}n , which was further pillared using a Y-shaped pillar N-donor ligand (Htpim) to form a 3D-pillared-layer framework with 1D open channels. The rectangular channels in the as-synthesized compound are fully occupied by guest DMF and H2 O molecules. The framework exhibits instant and reversible thermochromic properties corresponding to the removal of different H2 O and DMF guest molecules as temperature increases. The pale-yellow crystal undergoes significant redshifting to a greenish emission centered at 530 nm. Compound 1 also showed remarkable solvatochromic effects in the presence of various organic solvents without affecting its structural integrity. In addition, polycrystalline MOF films were grown on an α-Al2 O3 support for switchable and fast-response thermochromic and solvatochromic sensors.

RESUMO

Ligands play a crucial role in the supramolecular photoluminescence properties of Pt(II) square-planar complexes. To improve the luminescence color responses of N∧C∧N cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes to external stimuli such as mechanical stress and chemical vapors, we have conducted a steric engineering of the previous systems 1a-1d [Inorg. Chem. 2017, 56, 4978-4989] by introducing two tert-butyl groups to the tridentate ligand to form complexes 2a-2c. Unlike the "too low" or "too high" steric hindrance of the NCNPt core in 1a-1d, the combined steric effects of the tert-butyl groups at one side and the pentiptycene group at the other side of the NCNPt core in 2b are "just right" for generating as-prepared powders with pure monomer (green) emission or pure excimer (red) emission, depending on the rate of precipitation from solutions. The synergistic steric effects are also beneficial to the solid-state luminescence quantum efficiency (30-36%). As a result of the differences in steric interactions and thus in the relative monomer vs excimer emission intensity, each complex of 2a-2c performs a two-step luminescence mechanochromism and vapochromism with different color patterns. This work provides an intriguing example of steric engineering of Pt(II) complexes toward highly emissive molecular solids with high-contrast mechanochromic and vapochromic luminescence.

RESUMO

A new method for the preparation of 2-amino-3-cyanoquinolines from readily available aryldiazonium salts, 2-aminoarylketones, and malononitrile via a cascade reaction is reported. This one-pot approach involves the in situ generation of an N-arylnitrilium intermediate from the direct reaction of aryldiazonium salts and malononitrile, which undergoes intermolecular amination, Knoevenagel condensation, and then aromatization to yield the desired compound in moderate to good yields. This methodology features a quick assembly of C2 and C3 functionalized quinolines.

RESUMO

We have prepared NHC-CuI complexes with a rotaxane structure and used them as sterically sensitive catalysts for one-pot sequential copper-catalyzed azide/alkyne cycloadditions in solutions containing all of the coupling partners premixed in unprotected form. Most notably, a photolabile and sterically encumbered complex first catalyzed the coupling of a less bulky azide/alkyne pair; after removing the protective macrocyclic component from the rotaxane structure, through irradiation with light, the exposed dumbbell-shaped NHC-CuI complex catalyzed the second click reaction of a bulkier azide/alkyne pair. Using this approach, we obtained predominantly, from a single sealed pot, a bis-triazole product (84 %) from a mixture of two sterically distinct azides and a diyne.

RESUMO

The heterotrimetallic complexes [FeMFe(dpa)4 Cl2 ] (M=Ni (1), Pd (2), and Pt (3); dpa- =dipyridylamido) featuring two high-spin iron centers linked by Group 10 metals were synthesized and their physical properties were investigated. Oxidation of 1-3 with suitable oxidants in CH2 Cl2 solution yielded the mixed-valent species [1]+/2+ -[3]+/2+ . The solution properties of [1]0/+/2+ -[3]0/+/2+ were characterized by 1 H NMR and UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy as well as spectroelectrochemisty. The mixed-valent states of [1]+ -[3]+ obtained by electrochemical or chemical oxidation are classified as class II valence delocalization. The solid-state structures of 1-3, [1]+ , [3]+ , and [1]2+ were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, exhibiting a linear metal framework with an approximate D4 symmetry. The spin states and magnetic properties were studied by using SQUID magnetometry, EPR and Mössbauer spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. Antiferromagnetic interactions between terminal high-spin iron centers are present within [1]0/+/2+ -[3]0/+/2+ and the |J| values increase with the central metal ion changing from Ni to Pt. The DFT calculations reproduce the antiferromagnetic coupling and ascribe it to a σ-type exchange pathway. The substitution of the central metal not only influences the spin-spin interactions but also the degree of electronic delocalization between the terminal iron sites along the Fe-M-Fe chains.

RESUMO

Spontaneous formation of the heteroleptic cadmium(II) bis(terpyridine) complex under ambient conditions can be achieved by a combination of 6,6''-di(2,6-dimethoxylphenyl)-substituted and unsubstituted terpyridine-based ligands. Building on this dynamic heteroleptic complexation, diverse metallo-supramolecular macrocycles and cages were readily assembled in quantitative yields from the predesigned multicomponent systems. The complementary ligation reinforced self-recognition to facilitate the shape-dependent self-sorting of a four-component dynamic library into two well-defined parallelograms. In addition, the subtle lability difference between homoleptic and heteroleptic complexes led to the site-selective CdII -ZnII transmetalation in the Sierpinski triangle. Facile construction of a dodecanuclear tetrahedral metallocage was also realized by using two self-recognizable tritopic building blocks. The photophysical study of the metallo-supramolecules assembled from the d10 metal ions revealed intense ligand-based photoluminescence in solution. The self-assembly strategy described here provides an efficient methodology for building pre-programmable, sophisticated supramolecular architectures furnished with photoactivity.

RESUMO

A transition-metal-free approach for the preparation of N-arylketimines has been developed from the direct reaction of aryldiazonium salts, arenes, and nitriles in a one-pot fashion with the consecutive formation of N-C and C-C bonds. This approach proceeds via an in situ generation of N-arylnitrilium intermediate, which then undergoes intermolecular arylation. This three-component strategy offers a step- and atom-efficient way to N-arylketimines from easily accessible reagents under mild reaction conditions. The characterization of stereochemistry of ketimine was achieved by X-ray crystallographic structure and theoretical calculation. Operational simplicity, shorter reaction time, excellent functional group compatibility, and scalability are the key features of this report.

RESUMO

Although boron-containing radicals are promising materials for molecular electronic devices, the electronic effect of the σ-donating yet π-accepting boron center on the stability of open-shell species has been less discussed. In this work, the role of a tricoordinate boron center in π-conjugated radicals was explored through electron paramagnetic resonance measurement of several boron-linked bisphenol radicals and diradicals. Replacing the bridging methine fragment of a neutral Galvinoxyl radical with an arylboryl group led to the corresponding boron-linked radical anion that requires excessive steric protection at the boron center to be persistent in solution. Experimental and theoretical investigations revealed that the introduction of boron would diminish the quinoidal character of the phenoxyl radical and increase both the electrophilicity and nucleophilicity of the open-shell species. Therefore, it is important to consider the steric protection of the boron center in boron-containing π-conjugated organic radicals.

RESUMO

We have prepared [2]rotaxanes, the behavior of which as switchable catalysts depends on their pirouetting motion, which can be controlled through the addition and removal of Na+ ions. At least three sequential on/off cycles of a Michael reaction can be performed in situ when using the NaTFPB/[2.2.2]cryptand reagent pair to switch "on" and "off" the catalytic ability of the [2]rotaxanes.

RESUMO

The ability of the bulky H-shaped pentiptycene scaffold in promoting the mechanochromic and vapochromic luminescence properties for organometallic materials has been demonstrated with the N^C^N cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes [X-NCNPtY], where X = Br or Pa, the substituent on the terdentate dipyridylbenzene N^C^N ligand, and Y = Cl or Pa, the ancillary ligand, in which Pa = pentiptycene acetylene. Intermolecular interactions between the planar NCNPt cores are described by π-π and d-π interactions with negligible PtII···PtII bonding, corresponding to ligand-centered excimer rather than metal-metal-to-ligand charge-transfer emission, for these platinum(II) complexes in aggregates and in the solid state. Interplay of the relative excimer-to-monomer emission intensity in response to external force and/or vapor stimuli accounts for the luminescence mechanochromism and vapochromism of the pentiptycene-incorporated platinum(II) complexes [Pa-NCNPtCl], [Br-NCNPtPa], and [Pa-NCNPtPa], whereas the pentiptycene-free counterpart [Br-NCNPtCl] undergoes little or no emission color response. In particular, the complex [Pa-NCNPtCl] displays a distinct response to aromatic versus nonaromatic organic vapors: namely, aromatic vapors such as benzene convert the excimer emission to monomer emission, but the opposite is true with nonaromatic vapors. A two-stage emission color change from red to orange and then to yellow could thus be achieved by grinding and by subsequent benzene-vapor fuming. Another feature associated with [Pa-NCNPtCl] is an aggregation-induced green → magenta luminescence color change in water/tetrahydrofuran mixed solutions. The structure-luminescence property relationship is discussed in relation to intermolecular interactions and packing modes that depend on the number and positions of pentiptycene groups.

RESUMO

1,2-Boryl migration of N-boryl N-heterocyclic carbene to 2-boryl imidazole is proposed to proceed through generation and recombination of two radical intermediates, namely, a neutral diarylboron radical and a N-heterocyclic carbene radical. Crossover experiments suggest that these two radical species are stable enough to escape solvent cages and recombine intermolecularly. The presence of radical intermediates is further supported by spin trapping experiments. Besides, the coordination of Li+ cation is found to be critical for the stability of the NHC radical.

RESUMO

Herein, the excited-state dynamics of an extended metal atom chain complex, Cr3(dpa)4Cl2 (dpa = dipyridylamide), in tetrahydrofuran solution were investigated using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Upon excitation at a wavelength of 330 nm, two distinct excited-state absorption species with varied dynamics were identified and assigned to the symmetric (s-) and unsymmetric (u-) Cr3(dpa)4Cl2. The major species is s-Cr3(dpa)4Cl2 that undergoes rapid conversion at less than 100 fs from the ligand-centred π-π* state, which is the initially accessed state, to the metal-centred d-d state and then vibrational cooling accompanying the structural relaxation at a time constant ∼2.2 ps. Most of the s-form is recovered to the ground state at ∼200 ps. For u-Cr3(dpa)4Cl2, a similar rapid conversion to d-d states is observed, and the geometric/vibrational relaxation is ∼0.8 ps. The second recovery of the ground state with approximately equal amplitude is observed at a time constant of ∼5 ns. This might be because many d-d states exist and about half of them inefficiently couple with the ground state surface.

RESUMO

The effect of a ligand on the electron deficiency and Lewis acidity of the Cp*-substituted boron dication has been investigated experimentally and theoretically. In addition to the reported IMes- and N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO)-stabilized boron dications, the related cyclic alkylamino carbene (CAAC)-coordinated boron mono- and dications have also been synthesized and structurally characterized. An electrochemical study of dications [3a-3c]2+ confirms the higher electron deficiency of the dicationic system than the related boron monocations. Moreover, the presence of a π-acidic CAAC ligand is critical for realizing stable radical species generated from the chemical reduction of boron cations. The nature of the axial ligand also significantly affects the selectivity of the hydride addition reaction of boron dications. While bulky superhydride reacts with [3a-3c]2+ in the same manner to give the cyclic boreniums, [BH4]- attacks three different electrophilic sites of boron dications: the sp2 carbon of Cp* of the IMes-coordinated system ([3a]2+), the central boron atom of the NHO-stabilized analogue ([3b]2+), and the ylidene carbon of the CAAC-containing boron dication ([3c]2+).

RESUMO

This paper provides the first example of experimentally characterized hydrogen-bond cooperativity on fluorescence quenching with a modified green fluorescence protein (GFP) chromophore that contains a 6-membered C═N···H-O and a 7-membered C═O···H-O intramolecular H-bonds. Variable-temperature (1)H NMR and electronic absorption and emission spectroscopies were used to elucidate the preference of intra- vs intermolecular H-bonding at different concentrations (1 mM and 10 µM), and X-ray crystal structures provide clues of possible intermolecular H-bonding modes. In the ground state, the 6-membered H-bond is significant but the 7-membered one is rather weak. However, fluorescence quenching is dominated by the 7-membered H-bond, indicating a strengthening of the H-bond in the excited state. The H-bonding effect is more pronounced in more polar solvents, and no intermediates were observed from femtosecond fluorescence decays. The fluorescence quenching is attributed to the occurrence of diabatic excited-state proton transfer. Cooperativity of the two intramolecular H-bonds on spectral shifts and fluorescence quenching is evidenced by comparing with both the single H-bonded and the non-H-bonded counterparts. The H-bond cooperativity does not belong to the conventional patterns of σ- and π-cooperativity but a new type of polarization interactions, which demonstrates the significant interplay of H-bonds for multiple H-bonding systems in the electronically excited states.

RESUMO

Dimeric, trimeric, and tetrameric cyclic [2]catenanes have been prepared directly through one-pot sodium-ion-templated dynamic imine formation from a diamine and a tetraaldehyde. NaBH4 mediated reduction of the labile imino bonds of these cyclic [2]catenane oligomers, followed by methylation of the resulting secondary amino groups enabled the isolation and characterization of oligomeric cyclic [2]catenanes as stable, covalently linked compounds.

RESUMO

The use of single-molecule junctions for various functions constitutes a central goal of molecular electronics. The functional features and the efficiency of electron transport are dictated by the degree of energy-level alignment (ELA), that is, the offset potential between the electrode Fermi level and the frontier molecular orbitals. Examples manifesting ELA are rare owing to experimental challenges and the large energy barriers of typical model compounds. In this work, single-molecule junctions of organometallic compounds with five metal centers joined in a collinear fashion were analyzed. The single-molecule i-V scans could be conducted in a reliable manner, and the EFMO levels were electrochemically accessible. When the electrode Fermi level (EF ) is close to the frontier orbitals (EFMO ) of the bridging molecule, larger conductance was observed. The smaller |EF -EFMO | gap was also derived quantitatively, unambiguously confirming the ELA. The mechanism is described in terms of a two-level model involving co-tunneling and sequential tunneling processes.
