RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the role of smoking, drinking, and their synergistic effect in the occurrence of potentially malignant oral disorders (PMOD). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We examined three groups: 50 patients with lung cancer, 50 patients with liver cirrhosis, and 50 patients with clear medical history. Scores were developed for drinking, smoking, drinking & smoking, and PMOD. RESULTS: All four scores were the lowest in the control group. The lung cancer group showed the highest Smoking, Alcohol & Smoking and Lesions score, while the liver cirrhosis group had the Alcohol score the highest. Compared with the control group, lung cancer group is more likely to develop a PMOD than the liver cirrhosis group (OR = 12.31/OR = 6.71). Statistical significance between the groups was found in the Lesions score (χ(2)  = 15.34; P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The patients with lung cancer and liver cirrhosis represent a high-risk group for PMOD. Patients with lung cancer and liver cirrhosis have never, to our knowledge, been categorized as high-risk patients for PMOD. After diagnosed, patients with lung cancer and liver cirrhosis should have a routine oral cavity examination, as they present a high-risk group for PMOD and oral cancer.

RESUMO

Urodynamic examinations in patients with obstructive uropathy due to prostatic adenoma before and after prostatectomy were done over a 6-year-period (1981-1988) at the Department of Urology, Pula Medical Centre. In a comparative group of 30 healthy examinees and in 125 patients with obstructive uropathy as a result of benign prostatic hypertrophy, a maximal uroflowmetry and flow volume measurement were also performed. Control urodynamic studies were done 12 weeks after prostatectomy in 112 patients, and in 102 patients after 12 months. Preoperative and postoperative mean values of maximal uroflow were comparable. The aim of these urodynamic investigations is to estimate their value for a more complete and precise diagnosis of prostatism, and to determine, by urodynamic flow measurement before and after surgery, an outcome of prostatectomy in removal of prostatism symptoms and for urine flow improvement. Eighty-six patients underwent then open surgery, and 38 were operated transurethrally. The benign hypertrophy diagnosis was confirmed by histological analysis in all patients.

RESUMO

Acute cholecystitis in children and adolescents is unusally rare especialy the gangrenous inflammation. Only a few cases are reported in medical literature and each publication of such a case is a contribution to the further understanding of the clinical picture and diagnosis of this rare childhood disease. Special attention must be given to the early discovery of acute cholecystitis and early surgical intervention because if the pocess gains a foothold it can cause complications which can be life threatening. The treatment consists of an early cholecystectomy in which case the prognosis is good and the mortality rate is very low.
