RESUMO
Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) have a poor prognosis and, to date, there are no reliable predictive biomarkers of response. In this work we explored the prognostic impact of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) concentration in 75 newly diagnosed patients enrolled in a prospective multicenter study. Pre-treatment cfDNA was strongly associated with clinical risk factors and was identified as a superior predictor for shorter progression-free survival in multivariable analysis, outweighing canonical risk parameters. Furthermore, we identified a cfDNA value above which survival worsens. In conclusion, pre-treatment cfDNA concentration represents an easily usable predictive biomarker that is highly associated with survival of PTCL patients.

PURPOSE: The robustness of surface-guided (SG) deep-inspiration breath-hold (DIBH) radiotherapy (RT) for left breast cancer was evaluated by investigating any potential dosimetric effects due to the residual intrafractional motion allowed by the selected beam gating thresholds. The potential reduction of DIBH benefits in terms of organs at risk (OARs) sparing and target coverage was evaluated for conformational (3DCRT) and intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) techniques. METHODS: A total of 192 fractions of SGRT DIBH left breast 3DCRT treatment for 12 patients were analyzed. For each fraction, the average of the real-time displacement between the isocenter on the daily reference surface and on the live surface ("SGRT shift") during beam-on was evaluated and applied to the original plan isocenter. The dose distribution for the treatment beams with the new isocenter point was then calculated and the total plan dose distribution was obtained by summing the estimated perturbed dose for each fraction. Then, for each patient, the original plan and the perturbed one were compared by means of Wilcoxon test for target coverage and OAR dose-volume histogram (DVH) metrics. A global plan quality score was calculated to assess the overall plan robustness against intrafractional motion of both 3DCRT and IMRT techniques. RESULTS: Target coverage and OAR DVH metrics did not show significant variations between the original and the perturbed plan for the IMRT techniques. 3DCRT plans showed significant variations for the left descending coronary artery (LAD) and the humerus only. However, none of the dose metrics exceeded the mandatory dose constraints for any of the analyzed plans. The global plan quality analysis indicated that both 3DCRT and IMRT techniques were affected by the isocenter shifts in the same way and, generally, the residual isocenter shifts more likely tend to worsen the plan in all cases. CONCLUSION: The DIBH technique proved to be robust against residual intrafractional isocenter shifts allowed by the selected SGRT beam-hold thresholds. Small-volume OARs located near high dose gradients showed significant marginal deteriorations in the perturbed plans with the 3DCRT technique only. Global plan quality was mainly influenced by patient anatomy and treatment beam geometry rather than the technique adopted.

1. Monitoring behavioural dynamics in complex animal environments, such as poultry breeding facilities, poses a challenge. Utilising technological approaches, such as accelerometers, offers a solution to assess long-term changes in reproductive activity at an individual bird level. Specifically, these sensors measure acceleration associated with the position and movements of the body over time. However, it is important to assess the most suitable method for attaching accelerometer tags to ensure they do not negatively impact behaviour and yield high-quality data.2. The potential of tri-axial accelerometer tags for assessing reproductive behaviour in Japanese quail was evaluated. Two attachment methods - a backpack (plastic platform with elastic bands near wing bases) and a patch (accelerometer on fabric glued to the synsacrum region) - were compared. Controls were handled similarly but without tags. Eighteen pairs of females were housed in pens and assessed immediately and 24 h after handling. After a week of habituation, a male from the same treatment group was introduced into each pen on d 8. The reproductive behaviour of the males was recorded using accelerometers and video recordings.3. The results showed that birds with patches were able to remove their conspecific's accelerometer and displayed an increased initial immobility response compared to the control and backpack groups. The presence of accelerometer tags did not impact male/female reproductive interactions nor fear responses to a novel object. From accelerometer recordings, male reproductive behaviour was easily identified as high amplitude fluctuations in the three axial components of the acceleration vectors, which was reflected as large values of dynamic body acceleration (VeDBA).4. In conclusion, the use of backpacks with accelerometers is a useful strategy to address highly relevant and difficult to tackle behavioural topics such as the temporal dynamic of male reproductive behaviour within breeding groups.
RESUMO
PURPOSE: To compare two left breast cancer patient cohorts (tangential vs. locoregional deep-inspiration breath-hold - DIBH treatment) with different predefined beam gating thresholds and to evaluate their impact on motion management and DIBH stability. METHODS: An SGRT-based clinical workflow was adopted for the DIBH treatment. Intrafractional monitoring was performed by tracking both the respiratory signal and the real-time displacement between the isocenter on the daily reference surface and on the live surface ("SGRT shift"). Beam gating tolerances were 5â¯mm/4â¯mm for the SGRT shifts and 5â¯mm/3â¯mm for the gating window amplitude for breast tangential and breastâ¯+ lymph nodes locoregional treatments, respectively. A total of 24 patients, 12 treated with a tangential technique and 12 with a locoregional technique, were evaluated for a total number of 684 fractions. Statistical distributions of SGRT shift and respiratory signal for each treatment fraction, for each patient treatment, and for the two population samples were generated. RESULTS: Lateral cumulative distributions of SGRT shifts for both locoregional and tangential samples were consistent with a null shift, whereas longitudinal and vertical ones were slightly negative (mean values <â¯1â¯mm). The distribution of the percentage of beam on time with SGRT shift >â¯3â¯mm, >â¯4â¯mm, or >â¯5â¯mm was extended toward higher values for the tangential sample than for the locoregional sample. The variability in the DIBH respiration signal was significantly greater for the tangential sample. CONCLUSION: Different beam gating thresholds for surface-guided DIBH treatment of left breast cancer can impact motion management and DIBH stability by reducing the frequency of the maximum SGRT shift and increasing respiration signal stability when tighter thresholds are adopted.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most frequent arrhythmia and is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Pathophysiological aspects consist in the activation of pro-fibrotic signaling and Ca2+ handling abnormalities at atrial level. Structural and electrical remodeling creates a substrate for AF by triggering conduction abnormalities and cardiac arrhythmias. The care of AF patients focuses predominantly on anticoagulation, symptoms control and the management of risk factors and comorbidities. The goal of AF therapy points to restore sinus rhythm, re-establish atrioventricular synchrony and improve atrial contribution to the stroke volume. New layer of information to better comprehend AF pathophysiology, and identify targets for novel pharmacological interventions consists of the epigenetic phenomena including, among others, DNA methylation, histone modifications and noncoding RNAs. Moreover, the benefits of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) in diabetic and non-diabetic patients at cardiovascular risk as well as emerging evidence on the ability of SGLT2i to modify epigenetic signature in cardiovascular diseases provide a solid background to investigate a possible role of this drug class in the onset and progression of AF. In this review, following a summary of pathophysiology and management, epigenetic mechanisms in AF and the potential of sodium-glucose SGLT2i in AF patients are discussed.

There is sparse published information on computed tomographic (CT) characteristics of canine gastrointestinal tumors. The purposes of this multi-center, retrospective, descriptive study were to describe the CT features of histologically-confirmed canine gastrointestinal spindle cell, epithelial, and round cell tumors and, when available, describe the corresponding ultrasound findings. The inclusion criteria were as follows: availability of pre-and post-contrast CT study, and a histopathological diagnosis of the lesions. Recorded parameters were tumor size, location, gastrointestinal wall layers involvement, lesion's growth and enhancement patterns, tumor margination, presence of stenosis, mineralization, ulcerations, lymphadenopathy, or other lesions in the abdomen/thorax. When available, ultrasound images were evaluated. Forty-one dogs met the inclusion criteria and had the following histological diagnoses: 21/41 (51%) spindle cells (7 leiomyomas, 14 leiomyosarcomas/gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs)), 13/41 (32%) epithelial (adenocarcinoma), and 7/41 (17%) round cell (lymphoma) tumors. The growth pattern was concentric, eccentric, and mixed in epithelial, spindle cell, and round cell tumors, respectively. Spindle cell tumors had the largest main volume and involved the outer gastrointestinal layer with an unaffected inner layer. Leiomyosarcomas/GISTs showed irregular margins compared to leiomyomas. Only lymphomas showed multifocal gastrointestinal involvement. Nine carcinomas and six spindle cell tumors caused partial stenosis with secondary sub-obstruction. Mineralizations were more frequent in spindle cell tumors (10/21) and absent in lymphomas. Lymphadenomegaly was widespread in lymphomas, regional in leiomyosarcomas-GISTs and adenocarcinomas, and absent in leiomyomas. The reported CT features may be useful in prioritizing the differential diagnosis between spindle cell, epithelial, and round cell tumors, similar to those reported on ultrasound.

PURPOSE: Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra X chromosome in males. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and the clinical profile of KS boys from mini-puberty to early childhood. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this retrospective, cross-sectional, population study, 145 KS boys and 97 controls aged 0-11.9 years were recruited. Serum FSH, LH, testosterone (T), Inhibin B (INHB), sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) were determined. Auxological parameters were assessed. To better represent the hormonal and clinical changes that appear in childhood, the entire population was divided into 3 groups: ≤ 6 months (group 1; mini-puberty); > 6 months and ≤ 8 years (group 2; early childhood); > 8 and ≤ 12 years (group 3; mid childhood). RESULTS: During mini-puberty (group 1), FSH and LH were significantly higher in KS infants than controls (p < 0.05), as were INHB and T (respectively p < 0.0001 and p < 0.005). INHB was also significantly higher in KS than controls in group 2 (p < 0.05). AMH appeared higher in KS than in controls in all groups, but the difference was only statistically significant in group 2 (p < 0.05). No significant differences were found in height, weight, testicular volume, and penile length. CONCLUSIONS: No hormonal signs of tubular or interstitial damage were found in KS infants. The presence of higher levels of gonadotropins, INHB and testosterone during mini-puberty and pre-puberty may be interpreted as an alteration of the HPG axis in KS infants.

Summary: Objective. Drug use in athletes has been frequently investigated in the last three decades, especially regarding its misuse for doping. However, little is known about the use of permitted drugs for medical purposes and less studies have investigated the relationship between adverse drugs reactions (ADRs) and sports. Methods. An observational cross-sectional investigation analyzing a group of second league soccer players (the second-highest division in Italy) was performed. Anamnestic and physical examinations as well as a validated questionnaire (AQUA©) were performed in a group of 378 Italian second league soccer players. Results. Most players (91.8%) reported the use of NSAIDs in the previous year, and one third of them were regular users. Analgesics were used in 64% of the players, while 52.1% had taken antibiotics in the previous year. 29.20% of players used intraarticular treatments in the previous year. In 7,4% of players, an ADRs was reported: 3,47% reacted to NSAIDs, 2,6% to antibiotics, 1,05% to analgesics and 1 of them to supplements. For intra-articular injections, only 2 players experienced ADRs. One quarter of players experienced reactions as urticaria-angioedema syndrome or more severe conditions as bronchospasm or anaphylaxis. Conclusions. This study shows that drug misuse/abuse in soccer is a real matter of debate, especially with regards to NSAIDs, exposing athletes to predictable and/or unpredictable risks for their health.

The new operational dosimetric quantities framework, proposed in the ICRU95 report, has stimulated the scientific community to start investigations that aim to assess its impact on radiation protection practices. As part of this effort, the present study describes an inter-comparison exercise among individual monitoring services (IMSs) on passive whole-body dosimetry. The inter-comparison is performed in terms of both the existing operational dose quantityHp(10)and its proposed replacementHp, to allow an evaluation of the actions that may be necessary to adapt dosimetry systems to the proposed quantity. For two of the tested IMSs, simple modifications to the detector response function, or the dose calculation algorithm, were sufficient to obtain results within acceptable limits. However, these approaches are not sufficient to give a level of performance comparable to that achieved in terms ofHp(10). This may require a modification to dosemeter design.

Rituximab (RTX), a chimeric anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody, has demonstrated good efficacy as treatment in patients with resistant chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP), but it is highly immunogenic due to its structure. Ocrelizumab (OCR) is a humanized anti-CD20 antibody, with higher tolerability and a lower immunogenic profile compared to RTX. We present a case of refractory CIDP effectively treated with OCR, switched from RTX after the development of anti-drug antibodies. A 25-year-old man was admitted to our clinic for the onset of distal upper and lower limb weakness and numbness, with electrodiagnostic criteria of CIDP. After several attempted standard CIDP treatments, RTX was introduced due to poor control of clinical relapses. Unfortunately, the patient developed a high anti-drug antibody titer after RTX infusion, with no control of disease. OCR was started as an off-label treatment, resulting in partial recovery from the last recurrence and achieving good prevention of new relapses with no adverse events. We suggest that OCR should be considered as another therapeutic option in refractory CIDP. In the literature, this is the first case of CIDP treated with OCR, demonstrating good efficacy for its anti-CD20 effect and better tolerability because of its lower immunogenicity.

PURPOSE: Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a genetic disorder caused by CTG expansion in the DMPK gene. The aim was to investigate the endocrine and metabolic aspects of DM1. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective, case-control study. We compared pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, gonadal and liver function and glycolipid metabolism of 63 DM1 patients against 100 control subjects. Given age-related differences, 2 further subgroups were created to investigate the pituitary-gonadal axis: < 41 (1a) and ≥ 41 (1b) years old for male subjects and < 46 (2a) and ≥ 46 (2b) years old for female subjects. Testicular and thyroid ultrasounds were also performed in the DM1 group. RESULTS: FT3 and FT4 were significantly lower in DM1 men than controls, while for both males and females, thyroglobulin, ACTH and cortisol were significantly higher in the DM1 group. Gonadotropin levels were significantly higher and inhibin B and DHEA-S levels significantly lower in DM1 patients than controls for both male subgroups. Testosterone and SHBG were significantly higher in controls than in patients for subgroup 1a. Prolactin was significantly higher in patients in subgroups 1b, while testosterone was lower in subgroup 2a than in age-matched female controls. A correlation between the number of CTG repeats and the percentage of male hypogonadal subjects was found. Finally, there was a worse glucose and lipid pattern and significantly higher transaminase and gamma-GT levels in both male and female patients. CONCLUSIONS: The high frequency of endocrine and metabolic abnormalities in DM1 highlights the importance of endocrine monitoring to enable the prompt initiation of a suitable therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Despite continuing efforts, compliance rates and knowledge of best practices in hand hygiene remain disappointing. Recognizing that conventional educational tools seem out of touch with young people and that the med and messages contents need refreshing, the Italian Study Group of Hospital Hygiene of the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Public Health devised a novel approach to promote the creation of innovative educational tools for improving knowledge of, and compliance with, hand hygiene rules among healthcare and medical students. METHODS: A contest in creating educational material on hand hygiene practices involved university students of nursing and medicine, and of other healthcare degrees. Students from the universities of the GISIO network were invited to create educational material (e.g., videos, posters, presentations, leaflets, and screensavers) to be presented by May 5th 2019 during the World Hand Hygiene Day / Save Lives: Clean Your Hands Global Annual Initiative of the World Health Organization). A local and a national winners were awarded. RESULTS: Three different local and national contests were performed during 2016, 2017 and 2018. During the three-year period, more than 270 educational tools have been developed: 130 (48%) were judged useful for hand hygiene promotion campaigns. The most frequent projects participating in the contests were videos (39%), posters (29%), leaflets (14%), and others (18%) submitted by more than 1,500 students of nursing (40%), medicine (31%), dentistry (7%), and of other healthcare courses in 14 universities. Products were evaluated by a local committee and, subsequently, local winners represented their University in a national contest. CONCLUSIONS: The contest provided a framework for the creation of innovative and potentially effective educational tools via an engaging approach that leveraged student creativity. Given the need to improve compliance rates, this study suggests that new ways can be advantageously explored to teach hand hygiene procedures and increase awareness of the importance of their consistent use among healthcare and medical students.

Our aim was to identify subclinical right ventricular (RV) alterations in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) by combining standard and three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE). Fifty SLE patients without concomitant cardiac disease and 50 healthy controls, matched for age and gender, were enrolled. Disease damage was evaluated by inflammatory markers and SLE damage index. All patients underwent an echo-Doppler examination with 3DE assessment of RV function, RV septal and lateral longitudinal strain. The two groups had comparable body mass index and blood pressure. RV transversal middle diameter and pulmonary arterial pressure were significantly higher in SLE compared to controls. By 3DE, RV end-systolic volume ( p = 0.037) was greater, whereas stroke volume ( p = 0.023), ejection fraction ( p < 0.0001) and septal and lateral longitudinal strain (both p < 0.0001) were lower in SLE. SLE damage index ≥ 1 was negatively associated with tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) ( p < 0.002), tricuspid E/A ratio ( p = 0.003), RV ejection fraction ( p < 0.05), lateral longitudinal strain ( p < 0.0001) and septal longitudinal strain ( p = 0.04). By separate multivariate models, after adjusting for age, C reactive protein and proBNP, SLE damage index was independently associated with TAPSE ( p = 0.009) and RV lateral longitudinal strain ( p = 0.007). In conclusion, a subclinical RV systolic dysfunction is detectable in SLE by 3DE, RV lateral wall strain being a key parameter. RV dysfunction is associated with cumulative disease damage.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Adiponectin is a cytokine linking energy metabolism and immune system. After being assembled, adiponectin circulates as oligomers of different molecular weight, i.e. low, medium and high (HMW) molecular weight. These have the most potent biological effects. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease of the human central nervous system. The aim of this study was to characterize the expression levels of both total adiponectin and its oligomerization state in the serum from 99 patients with MS at baseline (i.e. not influenced by therapies). We also investigated the potential relationships between adiponectin and disease progression and severity. METHODS: Adiponectin was quantified and visualized by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, western blotting and fast protein liquid chromatography. During the follow-up (3.6 ± 2.20 years), the patients were evaluated using total annualized relapse rate and Expanded Disability Status Scale score. RESULTS: Total adiponectin is statistically higher in patients with MS compared with matched controls (12.18 vs. 10.02 µg/mL, P = 0.001). Interestingly, the adiponectin oligomerization state is altered in MS, with an increase of HMW oligomers. In addition, patients with MS with higher levels of adiponectin at baseline have significantly higher risk of progression and severity (Multiple Sclerosis Severity Score, 3.84 vs. 2.44, P = 0.001). No statistical difference in adiponectin expression was found between active and inactive patients with MS and among the different forms of disease. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that adiponectin and its HMW oligomers are greatly involved in MS autoimmune disorder representing a potential biomarker to predict worse MS prognosis and severity. Further studies are required to clarify the molecular mechanisms underlying the properties of adiponectin and HMW oligomers in MS.

One of the challenges in the development of germanium nanowires (Ge NWs) is to increase their length beyond the 10 µm limit without enlarging the NW diameter, i.e. minimizing the tapering. Here we report how it is possible to overcome this hurdle by using isobutyl germane (iBuGe) as a metal organic precursor during MOCVD growth, instead of the commonly used germane. We have grown and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Raman various samples and we have analyzed the effect of growth time, precursor flux and growth temperature on the NW length. The use of iBuGe coupled to optimized growth conditions permitted to obtain Ge NWs with lengths up to 30 µm with minimal tapering. To explain why a new precursor has this impact on the morphology of the NWs we consider two possible causes: (i) the role of carbon radicals produced by isobutyl decomposition and (ii) the reduced growth rate of Ge on the sidewalls. On the basis of Raman characterization and temperature-dependence of tapering, we conclude that the reduced tapering is probably due to lower growth rates on the sidewalls.
RESUMO
Current biomedical research is centered on the study of nanomaterials and their effects in biological environments. In particular, there is an increasing interest on TiO2 nanostructures for biomedical applications such as drug delivery or implant materials. In this framework, we present a Chemical Vapour Deposition process to synthesize titanium dioxide nanowires (NWs) on a commercially pure titanium substrate and we test the material In Vitro as a culture substrate for murine osteoblast-like MC3T3-E1 cells. A physical-morphological, structural and optical-characterization of the inorganic samples is performed by Electron Microscopy techniques and X-ray Diffraction, showing that a mat of crystalline rutile TiO2 NWs is obtained over the commercial substrate. In Vitro biological tests are performed by seeding MC3T3-E1 cells on the material and studying cell morphology, the cellmaterial interface and the osteoblast gene expression. These experiments show good cell adhesion to the nano-structured surface and a higher degree of early osteoblastic differentiation compared to control titanium surfaces, indicating that the present nano-structured material has good osteogenic potential for biomedical applications.

Summary: The current therapy with direct trombin inhibitors (DTI) is indicated for the prevention of stroke in non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Side effects are reported, particularly skin hypersensitivity, for this whole category of drugs as well as for other modern antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs. For their clinical features, these reactions appear as delayed T-cell mediated drug hypersensitivity, but at present there are no diagnostic methods of investigation. We reported a case of delayed skin reaction to edoxaban and we found the non-irritant concentration for patch test in the whole category of drugs. The patch test resulted positive for edoxaban. A successive challenge with alternative DTIs and/or a switch to warfarin is proposed as alternative therapy.

We investigated in ninety Caucasian pediatric patients the impact of the main polymorphisms occurring in CYP3A, CYP2D6, ABCB1 and ABCG2 genes on second-generation antipsychotics plasma concentrations, and their association with the occurrence of adverse drug reactions. Patients with the CA/AA ABCG2 genotype had a statistically significant lower risperidone plasma concentration/dose ratio (Ct/ds) (P-value: 0.007) and an higher estimated marginal probability of developing metabolism and nutrition disorders as compared to the ABCG2 c.421 non-CA/AA genotypes (P-value: 0.008). Multivariate analysis revealed that the ABCG2 c.421 CA/AA genotype was found associated to a higher hazard (P-value: 0.004) of developing adverse drug reactions classified as metabolism and nutrition disorders. The ABCB1 2677TT/3435TT genotype had a statistically significant lower aripiprazole Ct/ds if compared with patients with others ABCB1 genotypes (P-value: 0.026). Information obtained on ABCB1 and ABCG2 gene variants may result useful to tailor treatments with these drugs in Caucasian pediatric patients.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to investigate whether the rs35761398 variants of the cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2) gene may influence the acquisition of HIV infection and the clinical presentation of HIV/hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection. METHODS: We compared 166 HIV/HCV-coinfected patients with 186 HCV-monoinfected patients, all with biopsy-proven chronic hepatitis (using the Ishak scoring system), naïve for anti-HCV treatment and tested for the CB2 rs35761398 polymorphism (using the TaqMan assay). RESULTS: The HIV/HCV-coinfected patients were more frequently male (P < 0.002), were younger (P < 0.001), and had lower median BMI (P < 0.001) and HCV RNA (P < 0.05) and higher median aspartate aminotransferase (AST; P < 0.001), alanine aminotransferase (ALT; P < 0.001) and gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT; P < 0.001) levels than the HCV-monoinfected patients. The CB2 RR variant predominated in HIV/HCV-coinfected patients (45.8% vs. 31.2% in HCV-monoinfected patients; P < 0.001) and the CB2 QR variant in HCV-monoinfected patients (57.5% vs. 38.6% in HIV/HCV-coinfected patients; P < 0.00001), and the CB2 QQ variant was equally distributed. Focusing on patients with the CB2 QQ variant, the 26 HIV/HCV-coinfected patients, compared with the 21 HCV-monoinfected patients, showed less severe liver necroinflammation [lower histological activity index (HAI)] (P < 0.05). Of the patients with the CB2 RR variant, the 76 HIV/HCV-coinfected patients, compared with the 58 HCV-monoinfected patients, were more frequently male (P < 0.05), were younger (P < 0.001), and had a lower median body mass index (BMI; P < 0.001), a higher median AST level (P < 0.001), a higher mean HAI score (P < 0.05) and a higher rate of cases with severe steatosis (P = 0.05). In an analysis of variance (anova) of HCV/HIV-coinfected and HCV-monoinfected patient data, those with the CB2 RR variant (P = 0.003) and of male sex (P = 0.002) were more prevalent in the HCV/HIV-coinfected group. CONCLUSIONS: There is the suggestion of a positive effect of the CB2 RR variant on HIV acquisition and/or spread, which is in accordance with previous in vitro observations.
