Context: Curcumin, the active component of Curcuma longa L. (Zingiberaceae), exhibits a wide variety of biological activities including vasodilation and anti-inflammation.Objective: The relaxant effect of curcumin in tracheal smooth muscle (TSM) was not examined so far, thus, this study was designed to assess the relaxant effect of curcumin on rat TSM and examine the underlying mechanism(s) responsible for this effect.Materials and methods: TSM was contracted by KCl (60 mM) or methacholine (10 µM), and cumulative concentrations of curcumin (12.5, 25, 50, and 100 mg/mL) or theophylline (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 mM, as positive control) were added to organ bath. The relaxant effect of curcumin was examined in non-incubated or incubated tissues with atropine (1 µM), chlorpheniramine (1 µM), indomethacin (1 µM), and papaverine (100 µM).Results: In non-incubated TSM, curcumin showed significant relaxant effects on KCl-induced contraction in a concentration-dependent manner (p < 0.001 for all concentrations). The relaxant effects of curcumin 12.5, 25, and 50 mg/mL were significantly lower in atropine-incubated tissue compared to non-incubated TSM (p < 0.05 to p < 0.001). A significant difference was observed in EC50 between atropine-incubated (48.10 ± 2.55) and non-incubated (41.65 ± 1.81) tissues (p < 0.05). Theophylline showed a significant relaxant effect on both KCl and methacholine-induced contraction in a concentration-dependent manner (p < 0.001 for all cases).Conclusions: The results indicated a relatively potent relaxant effect of curcumin on TSM, which was less marked than the effect of theophylline. Calcium channel blocking and/or potassium channel opening properties of curcumin may be responsible for TSM relaxation.

Oxidative stress has a major role in the nephrosis. In the present study, the effects of hydroalcoholic extract of Zataria multiflora (ZM) and carvacrol (CAR) were evaluated on the renal damage induced by adriamycin (ADR). The animals accidentally divided into four groups including: Control, ADR, ZM + ADR and CAR + ADR. The renal tissue, urine, and blood samples subjected to biochemical markers and histopathological evaluation. ADR significantly decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR) while escalated urine protein excretion as well as protein clearance (p < .01 to p < .001). Also, ADR significantly reduced the antioxidants and boosted the malondialdehyde (MDA) compared to the control (p < .05 to p < .01). In groups treated by ZM and CAR, GFR, and antioxidants significantly increased, whereas urine protein excretion and MDA decreased (p < .05 to p < .001). ZM and CAR induced an improvement in ADR-induced renal damage by improving renal function as well as antioxidant activity.

In this work, a quick, facile and efficient approach was presented for green synthesis of cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs) based on an aqueous extract of the Ficus johannis plant. Two extraction methods involving microwave assisted extraction (MWAE; 90 and 270 w; 15 min) and ultrasonic assisted extraction (USAE; 15 min; 45 °C) were performed as eco-friendly, effective, green and fast techniques for the extract preparation of the fruit's plant. The as-prepared plant extracts were used as natural stabilizing precursors in the synthesis of CdTe QDs. The synthesized QDs were characterized using various techniques. The average particle size of the QDs from the X-ray diffraction patterns was calculated to be 1.2 nm. UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic studies show a wide absorption band from 400 to 425 nm and a maximum emission peak around 470 nm, which confirmed the successful synthesis of CdTe QDs via the applied synthetic method. After synthesis and characterization of the samples, the antimicrobial properties, genotoxicity, toxicity and antifungal activities of the as-prepared CdTe QDs were investigated. In addition, antioxidant properties of the samples (QDs and extracts), were evaluated by different antioxidant assays. The results indicate the significant antimicrobial activity of the extract and CdTe QDs samples, with negligible toxicity and genotoxicity impacts.

In the present study, microwave assisted extraction (MAE) was applied as an efficient, green and rapid approach to prepare the aqueous extract of Suaeda aegyptiaca (SA) plant. The obtained aqueous extracts at two different irradiation power (90 and 270W; 15min) in MAE process as well as maceration method (24h) were used in a green and eco-friendly approach for the synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). The synthesized ZnO NPs have been characterized via different techniques including UV-Vis absorption; fluorescence and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopices, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). According to the results, the average size of the prepared ZnO particles was estimated around 60nm. A broad absorption band around 382nm in UV-Vis absorption spectrum and a maximum emission at wavelength of 458nm in fluorescence spectrum clarified the successful biosynthesis of ZnO NPs. Moreover, the biological properties of the extracts and biosynthesized ZnO NPs were investigated by antimicrobial tests (i.e. Well-diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) tests), antifungal and antioxidant tests (total phenolic and flovonoid content, antioxidant activity against dipheny-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and ethylbenzothiazolin-6sulphonic acid (ABTS+)). Finally, DNA cleavage potential of the samples was studied, too.
