PURPOSE: This study aims to describe the prevalence and the fluctuations of respiratory viral infections among the pediatric population in a tertiary care center during 2019-2023, parallel with the COVID-19 pandemic, and the specific preventative measures applied in the region during this time. METHODS: In this observational study, we extracted all respiratory virus PCR tests collected from pediatric patients (< 15 years old) between January 2019 and March 2023. Data on the positivity rate and prevalence of 18 respiratory viruses were presented over the study period. RESULTS: The lowest rate for the studied respiratory viruses was observed in 2020/2021 (during the COVID-19 pandemic), followed by a gradual increase in positive cases in the 2021/2022 season. Timing (seasonality) was altered during 2022/2023 with an early circulation of respiratory viruses in May-June followed by an early start of the usual respiratory viruses' season in September, leading to prolonged respiratory virus activity. Most respiratory viruses were circulating at unprecedented levels during the 2022/2023 season, with rhinovirus/enterovirus being the most commonly detected virus in all seasons. Other viruses that had atypical activity after the COVID-19 pandemic were influenza A(H3) virus, adenovirus, and parainfluenza 3 virus. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates the extended influence of the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated community restriction measures on the timing and distribution of other respiratory viruses. Continuous monitoring of changes in the circulation of respiratory viruses is crucial for the success of related public health measures such as vaccination distributions and epidemic preparedness.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension may cause target organ damage (TOD). Target blood pressure (BP) management may not be appropriate in some conditions. AIM: We aim to assess the impact of targeted BP management in severe hypertension on renal TOD. PATIENTS & METHODS: This is a prospective cohort study involving patients admitted due to severe hypertension (BP > 180/120) associated with any symptoms. The study involved patients referred to the ICU in our tertiary center during the period between August 2017 and February 2018. All patients underwent target BP treatment according to recent guidelines. Hs-Troponin T (hs-TNT) and serum creatinine (s.creat) were measured in all patients on admission and 24 h later. Patients were divided into Group A (with initial normal hs-TNT) and Group B (with initial high hs-TNT). The main outcome was in-hospital renal-related morbidity (including renal failure). RESULTS: Four hundred seventy consecutive patients with hypertensive crises were involved in the study. Group B had a significantly higher incidence of in-hospital mortality (4 patients) and renal TOD (acute renal dysfunction) than Group A (P value = 0.001 and 0.000 respectively). There was a significant difference between initial s.creat on admission and follow-up s.creat values in Group B with significant elevation of their s.creat on the following 24 h (P = 0.002), while this difference is insignificant in Group A (P = 0.34). There was a significant positive correlation between hs-TNT and the follow-up s.creat (P = 0.004). CONCLUSION: In severe HTN, hs-TNT may be elevated due to marked afterload. Patients with severe HTN and high hs-TNT have higher s.creat values, which are associated with an increased risk of renal failure and in-hospital mortality if their BP decreases acutely to the guideline-target BP. Using biomarkers during the management of emergency HTN should be considered before following clinical guidelines. However, our findings do underscore the potential utility of hs-TNT as an indicator for risk stratification in patients with severe or emergency HTN.

Enterococci are Gram-positive coccus bacteria that are normally present in the gastrointestinal tract and ordinarily function commensally with humans. Very few studies have investigated the characteristics of enterococcal infections. We aimed to characterize patients with urinary tract infections (UTIs) due to Enterococci and their outcomes. This was a retrospective cohort study between June 2012-November 2022. Patients who had clinically and microbiologically confirmed Enterococcal UTI based on a urine culture positive for E. faecalis or E. faecium with a count of ≥105 CFU/mL and having urinary tract symptoms were included. A total of 396 patients were eligible and included. The patients had a median age of 61 years and were mostly females (56.8 %). The most common characteristics were hospitalization in a non-ICU ward, having a urinary catheter, and recent use of antibiotics within the last 3 months (66.4 %, 59.3 %, and 51.8 %, respectively). Infection with E. faecalis was more common than E. faecium (77.3 % vs. 22.7 %). However, the latter exhibited higher rates of antibiotic resistance (P < 0.001 to several antibiotics) and was associated with significantly higher median C-reactive protein level (26.7 vs. 13 mg/dL; P = 0.025), mortality (23 % vs. 10.1 %; P = 0.002), and median length of stay (25 vs. 11.5 days; P < 0.001). We found that most patients with enterococcal UTIs had a history of having a urinary catheter and recent antibiotic use and were mostly females and hospitalized in non-ICU wards. E. faecium-infected patients experienced more severe episodes and poorer outcomes compared to patients infected with E. faecalis; thus, would need more aggressive therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the outcomes of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for deep-seated (brainstem, basal ganglia, thalamus, cerebellar peduncle) intracranial cavernous malformations (ICMs). METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed according to PRISMA and MOOSE guidelines. The main outcomes were comparing pre- and post-SRS hemorrhage rates, using the pooled risk ratios (RR) as the measure of effect. Additionally, the study assessed lesion volume changes and radiation-injury incidence. RESULTS: Data of 850 patients across 14 studies were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled RR of all deep-seated ICMs show a decrease in hemorrhage rate after SRS compared to pre-SRS over the total follow-up period (RR =0.13), initial 2 years (RR =0.22), and after 2 years (RR =0.07). For 9 studies that reported hemorrhage rate of the brainstem only, the pooled RR shows a decrease of hemorrhage rate after SRS compared to pre-SRS over the total follow-up period (RR =0.13), initial 2 years (RR =0.19), and after 2 years (RR =0.07). Volumetric regression was achieved in 44.25% and stability in 56.1%. The pooled incidence of symptomatic and permanent radiation injury was 9% (95% CI, 7-11) and 3% (95% CI, 0-1.9%), respectively. CONCLUSION: SRS appears effective in reducing hemorrhage rates for deep-seated ICMs. The risk of symptomatic radiation injury is low. Given the high risk of surgical morbidity, SRS is a reasonable treatment option for patients with deep-seated ICMs with at least one prior hemorrhage.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) represents a problem for the healthcare system worldwide. DM has very serious complications such as blindness, kidney failure, and cardiovascular disease. In addition to the very bad socioeconomic impacts, it influences patients and their families and communities. The global costs of DM and its complications are huge and expected to rise by the year 2030. DM is caused by genetic and environmental risk factors. Genetic testing will aid in early diagnosis and identification of susceptible individuals or populations using ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels present in different tissues such as the pancreas, myocardium, myocytes, and nervous tissues. The channels respond to different concentrations of blood sugar, stimulation by hormones, or ischemic conditions. In pancreatic cells, they regulate the secretion of insulin and glucagon. Mutations in the KCNJ11 gene that encodes the Kir6.2 protein (a major constituent of KATP channels) were reported to be associated with Type 2 DM, neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM), and maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY). Kir6.2 harbors binding sites for ATP and phosphatidylinositol 4,5-diphosphate (PIP2). The ATP inhibits the KATP channel, while the (PIP2) activates it. A Kir6.2 mutation at tyrosine330 (Y330) was demonstrated to reduce ATP inhibition and predisposes to NDM. In this study, we examined the effect of mutations on the Kir6.2 structure using bioinformatics tools and molecular dynamic simulations (SIFT, PolyPhen, SNAP2, PANTHER, PhD&SNP, SNP&Go, I-Mutant, MuPro, MutPred, ConSurf, HOPE, and GROMACS). Our results indicated that M199R, R201H, R206H, and Y330H mutations influence Kir6.2 structure and function and therefore may cause DM. We conclude that MD simulations are useful techniques to predict the effects of mutations on protein structure. In addition, the M199R, R201H, R206H, and Y330H variant in the Kir6.2 protein may be associated with DM. These results require further verification in protein-protein interactions, Kir6.2 function, and case-control studies.

The phosphine-Ar (PH3-Ar) van der Waals complex's three-dimensional potential energy surface (3D-PES) was mapped along the intermonomer coordinates using the explicitly correlated Coupled Clusters approach. An analytical expansion of this 3D-PES is deduced. The complex characteristics of the intermolecular interactions between PH3 and Ar, which are at the origin of the pressure broadening of the PH3 rovibrational lines, are accurately described by this 3D-PES. Afterwards, the broadening of the phosphine lines perturbed by Ar at room temperature is computed using this 3D-PES. To be able to incorporate this 3D-PES into our collisional broadening computation software, we first modified it with a new "fractional" function. Then, we used the semiclassical Modified Robert and Bonamy model improved by the so-called notion of exact trajectory. For various branches of the ν2 and ν4 PH3 rovibrational bands, room temperature data are provided. Our data agree with the experimental measurements. The precise estimation of PH3 and Ar abundances in planetary atmosphere spectra should benefit greatly from the data provided here.

For the creation of adaptable carbonyl compounds in organic synthesis, the oxidation of alcohols is a crucial step. As a sustainable alternative to the harmful traditional oxidation processes, transition-metal catalysts have recently attracted a lot of interest in acceptorless dehydrogenation reactions of alcohols. Here, using well-defined, air-stable palladium(II)-NHC catalysts (A-F), we demonstrate an effective method for the catalytic acceptorless dehydrogenation (CAD) reaction of secondary benzylic alcohols to produce the corresponding ketones and molecular hydrogen (H2). Catalytic acceptorless dehydrogenation (CAD) has been successfully used to convert a variety of alcohols, including electron-rich/electron-poor aromatic secondary alcohols, heteroaromatic secondary alcohols, and aliphatic cyclic alcohols, into their corresponding value-added ketones while only releasing molecular hydrogen as a byproduct.

Anaplasma spp. are obligate intracellular, tick-borne, bacterial pathogens that cause bovine and human anaplasmosis. We lack tools to prevent these diseases in part due to major knowledge gaps in our fundamental understanding of the tick-pathogen interface, including the requirement for and molecules involved in iron transport during tick colonization. We determine that iron is required for the pathogen Anaplasma marginale, which causes bovine anaplasmosis, to replicate in Dermacentor andersoni tick cells. Using bioinformatics and protein modeling, we identified three orthologs of the Gram-negative siderophore-independent iron uptake system, FbpABC. Am069, the A. marginale ortholog of FbpA, lacks predicted iron-binding residues according to the NCBI conserved domain database. However, according to protein modeling, the best structural orthologs of Am069 are iron transport proteins from Cyanobacteria and Campylobacterjejuni. We then determined that all three A. marginale genes are modestly differentially expressed in response to altered host cell iron levels, despite the lack of a Ferric uptake regulator or operon structure. This work is foundational for building a mechanistic understanding of iron uptake, which could lead to interventions to prevent bovine and human anaplasmosis.

PURPOSE: Cancer stem cells (CSC) are the most common causes of lung cancer relapse and mouse resistance to chemotherapy. CD166 was identified as CSC marker for lung cancer. Our study aimed to detect the effect of dendritic cell vaccine loaded with tumor cell lysate (TCL-DCV) on percentage of CD166+ CSC in lung of mice exposed to Benzo(a)Pyrene (BP). METHODS: Female albino mice were divided into 5 groups (22 mice per group): normal control (NC), lung cancer control (LCC) (50 mg/kg BP orally, twice weekly for four weeks), dendritic cell (DC), TCL-DCV and cisplatin. Cisplatin (6 mg/kg, intraperitoneal) was given in two doses (18th and 20th week). 1 × 106 cells of each of DC and TCL-DCV was given subcutaneously as cisplatin. At the end of experiment (22 weeks), lung tissue was used for evaluation of cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen-4 (Ctla-4), transforming growth factor-ß (Tgf-ß), forkhead box protein P3 (Foxp3), programmed death ligand 1 (Pd-l1) and interleukin 12 (Il-12) gene expression using quantitative RT-PCR. The percentage of CD83+, CD8+ and CD166+ cells in lung tissue were measured using flow cytometry. RESULTS: The results revealed that TCL-DCV reversed the tumorigenic effect of BP in the lung as evidenced by histopathological examination. Compared to cisplatin, dendritic cell vaccination (TCL-DCV) significantly decreased percentage of CD166+ CSC. This anticancer stemness effect was attributed to the immune-stimulatory effect as indicated by increased percentage of CD83+ and CD8+ cells, upregulation of Il-12, and downregulation of Tgf-ß, Ctla-4, Pd-l1 and Foxp3 gene expression compared to LCC group. CONCLUSIONS: TCL-DCV ameliorated cancer stemness through modulating tumor immune archetypes which make it a potent therapeutic alternative to chemotherapy resistant cases.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies from Europe and North America have provided evidence that exposure to air pollution can aggravate symptoms in asthmatic patients. METHODS: Daily number of AEDv, air pollution levels (PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO2 and CO) and meteorological variables was obtained from Jubail Industrial City, Saudi Arabia, for the period of 2007-11. Data were analyzed using a time-series approach. Relative risks (RRs) were estimated using Poisson regression. RESULTS: The associations between AEDv and PM10, PM2.5, SO2 and NO2 remained positive and statistically significant after mutual adjustment in the multi-pollutant model.The RR of AEDv increased by 5.4, 4.4, 3.4 and 2.2% per an inter-quartile range increase in SO2 (2.0 ppb), PM2.5 (36 µg/m3), NO2 (7.6 ppb) and PM10 (140 µg/m3), respectively. No significant associations between AEDv and CO were found. CONCLUSIONS: Current levels of ambient air pollution are associated with AEDv in this industrial setting in the Middle East. Greater awareness of environmental health protection and the implementation of effective measures to improve the quality of air in such settings would be beneficial to public health.

BACKGROUND: Injury is the leading cause of death among Saudi children. Despite that, much remains unknown on the epidemiology and the extent of burden. This scoping review aims to describe previous literature on injury burden, including types, causes, and outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a scoping literature search of English published articles on injuries among Saudi children between 0 to 18 years old using Scopus, MEDLINE, and Web of Science between January 2000 and December 2020. The primary outcome was the type and the cause of childhood injuries. Data extraction was based on specified data elements that included study characteristics and epidemiological parameters. The STROBE checklist was used to assess the quality of publications. RESULTS: The initial review identified 3,384 studies. Of which, 36 studies met the inclusion criteria. A total of 20,136 children were included; of them, 69% were males. Among studies that examined overall injuries, falls represented 31.9%, while 25.1% were due to Motor Vehicle Collision (MVC). The leading cause of fractures was falls (37.9%), followed by MVC (21.5%). The leading cause was flames (52.1%) followed by scald (36.4%) for burns. While for poisoning, medications were the leading cause of (39.9%), followed by toxic household products (25.7%). Weighted mortality rates were 5.2% for overall injuries, 8.3% for fractures of the skull and spine, and 17.4% for burns. CONCLUSIONS: MVC and falls are associated with the highest share of injuries in the kingdom. These findings can guide prevention efforts to reduce injury burden and improve population health. Further population-based research is warranted to explore the determinants of childhood injuries across all regions of Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Since 2004, adjuvant 5-fluorouracil, leucovorin, and oxaliplatin (FOLFOX or FLOX) have been the standard of care for patients with resected colon cancer. Herein we examine the change of outcomes over a 10-year period in patients with stage III colon cancer who received this regimen. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Individual patient data from the ACCENT database was used to compare the outcomes in older (1998-2003) and newer (2004-2009) treatment eras for patients with stage III colon cancer who received adjuvant FOLFOX or FLOX. The outcomes were compared between the two groups by the multivariate Cox proportional-hazards model adjusting for age, sex, performance score, T stage, N stage, tumor sidedness, and histological grade. RESULTS: A total of 6501 patients with stage III colon cancer who received adjuvant FOLFOX or FLOX in six randomized trials were included in the analysis. Patients enrolled in the new era group experienced statistically significant improvement in time to recurrence [3-year rate, 76.1% versus 73.0%; adjusted hazard ratio (HRadj) = 0.83 (95% CI, 0.74-0.92), P = 0.0008], disease-free survival (DFS) [3-year rate, 74.7% versus 72.3%; HRadj = 0.88 (0.79-0.98), P = 0.024], survival after recurrence (SAR) [median time, 27.0 versus 17.7 months; HRadj = 0.65 (0.57-0.74), P < 0.0001], and overall survival (OS) [5-year rate, 80.9% versus 75.7%; HRadj = 0.78 (0.69-0.88), P < 0.0001]. The improved outcomes remained in patients diagnosed at 45 years of age or older, low-risk patients (T1-3 and N1), left colon, mismatch repair proficient (pMMR), BRAF, and KRAS wild-type tumors. CONCLUSION: Improved outcomes were observed in patients with stage III colon cancer enrolled in clinical trials who received adjuvant FOLFOX/FLOX therapy in 2004 or later compared with patients in the older era. Prolonged SAR calls for revalidation of 3-year DFS as the surrogate endpoint of OS in adjuvant clinical trials and reevaluation of optimal follow-up of OS to confirm the trial findings based on the DFS endpoints. AIMS: Wood as a packing tool is used for packaging and transportation of fruits and vegetables for a time period varying from hours to days. During transportation, fruits and vegetables can be affected by moulds with significant postharvest problems. The present study describes the possibility of using wood-treated oil fungicide of n-hexane extracts from Eucalyptus camaldulensis (aerial parts), Vitex agenus-castus (leaves) and Matricaria chamomilla (flowers) against the infestation of Fusarium culmorum, Rhizoctonia solani and Penicillium chrysogenum. METHODS AND RESULTS: Air-dried wood samples of Melia azedarach were prepared with the dimensions of 0·5 × 1 × 2 cm and treated with the oily extracts at the concentrations of 0, 1, 2 and 3%. Oils extracted with n-hexane from E. camaldulensis and V. agenus-castus showed promising antifungal activities against the isolated and molecularly identified three fungi F. culmorum, R. solani and P. chrysogenum, while M. chamomilla observed the lowest activity against the studied fungi. GC/MS analysis of oils reported that the major components in E. camaldulensis were ß-fenchol (25·51%), Cyclobuta[1,2:3,4]dicyclooctene-1,7(2H,6bH)-dione,dodecahydro,(6αß,6ßα,12αα,12ßß)- (17·05), 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) (12·01%) and sabinene (9·45%); in V. agenus-castus were eucalyptol (22·17%), (E)-ß-caryophyllene (18·39%), and ß-sitosterol (12·44%); while in M. chamomilla were bisabolol oxide A (27·87%), (Z)-ß-farnesene (16·11%), D-limonene (14·18%) and chamazulene (11·27%). CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest using n-hexane oily extracts from E. camaldulensis and V. agenus-castus as a biofungicide for wood protection. Arsenic (As) recognized as a group I human carcinogen additionally poses a threat to plants which limit growth, metabolic activity, and productivity. Melatonin (MEL) is a naturally occurring compound in plants that have been recognized to mediate numerous morphological, physiological and molecular processes. Conversely, the role of MEL in inducing As-tolerance remains inexpressible and the plausible mechanisms in inducing As tolerance have remained largely unknown. The present investigation was designed to understand the protective role of MEL concentrations in rosemary herbs cultivated under As contamination. Arsenic evoked a deleterious decline on herb productivity, photosynthetic pigment, ion concentration, water status, ascorbic acid, essential oil (EO) yield and induced malformation of the chloroplast. Alternatively, increased organic osmolytes, oxidative impairment criteria, additionally antioxidant enzymes, phenol, flavonoid, anthocyanin, and EO%. Exogenous application of MEL with or without As, considerably increased growth, photosynthetic pigment, ion concentration, organic osmolytes as well as EO yield regarding polluted or non-polluted treatment respectively. Moreover, MEL treatment stabilized the cell membrane integrity, suppressed oxidative impairment criteria, and enhanced antioxidant capacity, additionally upregulation antioxidant enzymes. Plant treated with As showed a significant increase in As contamination and a bioconcentration factor in both root and shoot system. MEL supplementation under normal or As concentration, reduced As accumulation and bioconcentration factors, in either shoot or root systems. Additionally As decrease transfer factor, however, supplementation of MEL further decreased it. Application of 50 µM MEL might help the herbs to withstand As stress by strengthening their antioxidant machinery and osmoregulation capacity.

Fulminant hepatic failure is a life-threatening disease. Hepatitis A virus (HAV) can cause fulminant hepatic failure and death in about 0.2% of cases. Extensive destruction of infected hepatocytes by immune-mediated lysis is thought to be the cause. We aimed to evaluate the use of steroid therapy in children with fulminant HAV. This study included 33 children with fulminant HAV in two groups. Steroid group: comprised of 18 children who received prednisolone (1 mg/kg/d) or its equivalent dose of methylprednisolone, and the nonsteroid group: comprised another 15 children who did not receive steroid therapy. Age and sex were matched for both groups (P > .05), and they were comparable regarding baseline clinical and laboratory characteristics. Of the steroid group, 15 patients survived and 3 died, while in the nonsteroid group, 4 patients survived and 11 died (P = .001). Of the living patients, 15 of 19 (78.9%) received steroids while only 3 of 14 (21.4%) of the dead patients received steroids (P = .001). Stepwise regression analysis showed that steroid therapy was the only independent variable associated with recovery (P = .001). Steroid therapy in children with fulminant HAV associated significantly with improved outcome and survival. Future studies on a larger population size are strongly recommended.

The aim of this work is to identify the chemical constituents and the bioactivity of essential oil (EO), acetone extract (ACE) and n-hexane extract (HexE) of S. terebinthifolius ripened fruits using GC-MS. Total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of extracts were determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) assays, respectively. The toxicity against the growth of Acinetobacter baumannii, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Micrococcus flavus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Sarcina lutea, and Staphylococcus aureus was determined with measuring the inhibition zones (IZs) using the disc diffusion method at the concentrations from 125 to 2000 µg/mL, also, the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) using 96-well micro-plates and ranged from 4 to 2000 µg/mL. The major components in EO were α-pinene (36.9%), and α-phellandrene (32.8%). The major components in ACE were oleic acid (38.7%), α-phellandrene (13.33%), and δ-cadinene (11.1%), while the major methyl esters of fatty acids detected in HexE were oleic (12.8%), and palmitic (10.9%). The EO showed good activity against the growth of Staph. aureus and P. aeruginosa with MIC values of 16 µg/mL and 32 µg/mL, the ACE showed broad activity against the studied bacterial pathogens with MIC values ranged from of 4-128 µg/mL against the studied bacterial isolates, while HexE, however, showed weak antibacterial activity. The IC50 values of EO, ACE and HexE were 15.11 ±â€¯0.99, 118.16 ±â€¯1.7 and 324.26 ±â€¯2.45 µg/mL, respectively, compared to IC50 of Tannic acid (23.83 ±â€¯1.9 µg/mL) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT, 2.9 ±â€¯0.1 µg/mL). Data suggested that the ripened fruits of S. terebinthifolius have potent antioxidant and antibacterial activities.

Infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a public health burden in several countries. Although transmission through blood is the most likely potential route of HCV infection, other sources warrant exploration. This study was designed to examine the possibility that the mosquito Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) might serve as a vector of HCV. A series of laboratory experiments were conducted in female Cx. pipiens that were fed on blood taken from HCV patients and tested for the presence of HCV RNAs using a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction technique. In addition, the ability of the female mosquito to transmit HCV to human blood through membrane feeding or to its offspring (larvae) was tested. Although positive strand RNA was detected on days 1,7 and 14, negative strand HCV RNA was detected in mosquito body homogenate on days 7 and 14. Positive strands were also detected in the head, alimentary canal and salivary glands of mosquito adults at 1 week post-feeding, as well as in their offspring (larvae). An ex vivo assay demonstrated that HCV-infected mosquitoes were able to transmit the virus RNA into naive human blood samples via a membrane feeder. The present data indicate that the mosquito Cx. pipiens may be a potential vector of HCV.

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of hormonal treatments on ovarian activity and reproductive performance in Barki and Rahmani ewes during non-breeding season. Forty-eight multiparous ewes, 24 Barki and 24 Rahmani ewes were divided into two groups, 12 lactating and 12 dry ewes for each breed. Controlled internal drug release (CIDR) device was inserted in all ewes for 14 days in conjunction with intramuscular 500 IU equine chronic gonadotrophin (eCG) at day of CIDR removal. Data were analysed using PROC MIXED of SAS for repeated measures. Breed, physiological status and days were used as fixed effects and individual ewes as random effects. Barki ewes recorded higher (p < .05) total number of follicles, number of large follicles, serum estradiol concentration and estradiol: progesterone (E2 :P4 ) ratio compared to Rahmani ewes. Lactating ewes recorded higher (p < .05) number of small follicles and lower concentration of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) compared to dry ewes. Number and diameter of large follicles recorded the highest (p < .05) values accompanied with disappearance of corpora lutea at day of mating. Serum progesterone concentration recorded lower (p < .05) value at day of mating and the highest (p < .05) value at day 35 after mating. CIDR-eCG protocol induced 100% oestrous behaviour in both breeds, but Rahmani ewes recorded longer (p < .05) oestrous duration compared to Barki. Conception failure was higher (p < .05) in Barki compared to Rahmani ewes. In conclusion, CIDR-eCG protocol was more potent in improving ovarian activity in Barki compared to Rahmani ewes, but this protocol seems to induce hormonal imbalance in Barki ewes that resulted in increasing conception failure compared to Rahmani ewes.
