RESUMO

A 5% (m/m) premix for animal use was quantitatively characterized for the polymorph composition of its benzimidazole drug substance. Raman spectra of reference samples (pure polymorphs A, B and C in lactose at a concentration of 5%, m/m) were compared with the spectra of benzimidazole samples with a known polymorph composition and with the spectra of uncharacterized premixes. The raw intensities of 78 selected wavenumbers were vector-normalized and application of stepwise linear regression models estimated the relative quantities of the benzimidazole-drug polymorphs A, B and C in the different samples. Modelling results of the samples with known polymorph composition were in compliance with the expected concentrations, validating the proposed methodology. The benzimidazole drug substance in the premixes was predominantly polymorph B. Although statistically not significant, some traces of polymorph A could not be ruled out. Similar analyses were performed to evaluate the solid-state stability of the benzimidazole drug substance in another drug formulation, i.e. a suspension-emulsion. Suspension-emulsions originally determined as containing polymorph B benzimidazole drug substance were stored for 12 months at 25 degrees C/60%RH. FT-Raman spectroscopy revealed that no polymorph transformations occurred during this storage.

RESUMO

Subjects (N = 98) were randomly assigned to high- and low-responsibility conditions in a commitment-escalation experiment. Global Type A behavior pattern and the underlying dimension of achievement strivings were positively related to the desire to continue the same course of action in the high prior-responsibility condition but not in the low prior-responsibility condition. These findings are discussed in terms of future research into the judgment processes of people with Type A personality and the possible role of escalating commitment in disorders experienced by people with Type A personality.

RESUMO

On the basis of previous studies of source credibility and opinion leadership, the authors hypothesized that opinion leaders would serve as effective agents to promote positive attitudes toward a service-quality initiative and increase service-quality effectiveness. The service effectiveness of tellers before and after a service-quality leadership training program was rated by customers, supervisors, and the tellers themselves across 3 matched bank branches. Service effectiveness was rated significantly higher in a branch using opinion leaders as service-quality leaders compared with a branch using randomly selected frontline leaders. Tellers in the latter branch showed greater improvements in service effectiveness than did counterparts in a branch using no frontline service quality leaders. This difference between types of leaders appeared to be mediated by tellers' behavioral beliefs about the service-quality program.

RESUMO

This study compared a group decision support system (GDSS) with face-to-face (FTF) group discussion on characteristics of information exchange and decision quality. Participants given conflicting information tended to share more of their unique data and engaged in more critical argumentation when using the GDSS than when meeting FTF. Conversely, when information was consistent among members, there were no such differences between FTF and GDSS groups. The GDSS groups significantly outperformed the FTF groups in agreeing on the superior hidden profile candidate, especially when there was a lack of prediscussion consensus. Individual-level analyses revealed that members of GDSS groups that did not have a prediscussion consensus tended to experience stronger preference shifts toward the group's consensus decision.

RESUMO

Certain kinds of arousal in response to challenge situations reflect conditioning that makes one adaptive to task demands. A growing literature implicates chronic stress as a factor degenerating this conditioning. This study investigated the relation between objective occupational demands to which workers were classified for at least 2 years and various indicators of adaptive responsivity to challenge situations. There were consistently significant and negative relations between the occupational exposures and cardiovascular and skin temperature responsivity to the acute challenges administered in the laboratory, the corresponding speed of recovery to baseline after removal of the challenge stimulus, and peripheral catecholamine changes during a work shift.

RESUMO

Trait negative affectivity (NA) has been asserted to be a factor that spuriously inflates relationships between self-reported stressors and self-reported strain outcomes. We tested this hypothesis with conventional work stress instrument responses and physiological assessments obtained from 311 fire and police department employees. Confirmatory factor analyses indicated that NA did not measure a factor in common with measures of subjective strain. Latent-variable structural equations analyses, however, found that estimating the effects of NA on strain significantly attenuated the effects of work stressors. NA had no correlation with physiological stress outcomes. Trait positive affectivity did not attenuate relationships between work stressors and either subjective or objective stress outcomes. Implications for work stress research methodology and recommendations are discussed.

RESUMO

This study examined how cultural differences and efficacy perceptions influence the role of job control in coping with job demands. Perceiving higher control mitigated the effects of demands on psychological health symptoms and turnover intentions only among American bank tellers reporting high job self-efficacy. Among American tellers reporting low job self-efficacy, perceived control exacerbated the effects of demands. However, in a matched Hong Kong sample, collective efficacy interacted in the same way with control and demands as job self-efficacy had in the American sample. These differences appear to be explained by the individual attributes of idiocentrism and allocentrism that are linked to the societal norms of individualism and collectivism, respectively.

RESUMO

This study examined the interactive effects of job demands, control, and individual characteristics on upper respiratory illnesses and immune function. Having high job control appeared to lessen the linkage between job demands and poor health among individuals with high self-efficacy and those who perceived that they were not often responsible for negative job outcomes. Conversely, having high job control exacerbated the association between job demands and poor health among inefficacious individuals. Implications for promoting more healthful work environments and facilitating employee coping are discussed.

RESUMO

The nomological validity of the Type A behavior pattern was explored. The Structured Interview (SI) and a battery of personality trait, physical health, and strain measures were administered to an occupationally diverse sample of 568 workers. Ss were also monitored for physiological reactivity and recovery (blood pressure, heart rate, skin temperature, and electrodermal response) to the SI and a subsequent Stroop Color-Word Conflict Task. A confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that SI scores can be factored into three distinct dimensions. There was considerable overlap in the patterns of personality traits that characterized the Type A components, but only a Hostility dimension was significantly related to physiological reactivity and recovery. The results have implications for distinguishing coronary-proneness from the more traditional Type A conceptualization.

RESUMO

Recent research has attempted to identify mediators of the relationship between participative decision making (PDM) and job satisfaction. The importance of role perceptions and the performance-reward expectancy (E2) as plausible mediators have been established, but theorists have identified additional variables that may have rival or complementary mediational effects. This study identified the plausible mediators and conducted a covariance structure analysis using longitudinal data. Role ambiguity, perceived obstacles, and E2 appeared to partially mediate the relationship between PDM and job satisfaction.
