RESUMO

Most clear cell neoplasms of the ovaries are carcinomas; benign and borderline clear cell tumors are uncommon. To date, only 12 cases of benign clear cell adenofibroma have been reported in the literature. Here we report a case of benign clear cell adenofibroma of the left ovary in a 51-year-old postmenopausal woman. Histological examination revealed widely spaced simple glands embedded in a dense fibrous stroma. The glands were lined by one to two layers of cells with abundant clear cytoplasm. The nuclei were bland and uniform in size and shape. There was minimal cytologic atypia in some areas. In this article we discussed the criteria for the diagnosis of benign and borderline clear cell adenofibromas and reviewed the literature.

RESUMO

The shape of dose-response curves obtained for asynchronous, exponentially growing 9L rat brain tumor cells treated in vitro with 1,3-bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea changed as a function of the drug exposure time. For short treatment times (less than 1 hr), the dose-response curves had shoulders, indicating that the cells may accumulate sublethal damage; however, after longer treatments (greater than 1 hr), little if any shoulder was apparent. The slope of the exponential portion of the dose-response curve increased progressively with treatment periods from 15 min to 2 hr. Longer exposure times (up to 24 hr) produced no further changes in the cell-kill kinetics. Cell survival was directly related to the BCNU exposure dose [o integral t Co(t)dt] and to the amount of bound BCNU per cell. Extrapolation of the curves for these two variables indicated that some BCNU damage accumulates before death occurs. The amount of serum and cell products available in the medium to bind BCNU affected the level of survival; however, there was no evidence that extracellular spontaneous breakdown products or chemical transformation products were involved in the cell-killing mechanism.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of various pretreatment clinical and laboratory characteristics on the survival of patients with diffuse malignant pleural mesothelioma (DMPM). One hundred histopathologically confirmed DMPM patients were evaluated. Fifty-nine were treated with chemoimmunotherapy while 41 who had refused chemoimmunotherapy received supportive therapy alone. The following pretreatment characteristics were evaluated in both univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses: age, gender, Karnofsky performance score (KPS), histology asbestos exposure, presence of chest pain, dyspnoea, weight loss, symptom duration, smoking history, disease location, platelet count, haemoglobin, white blood cell (WBC) count, serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and extent of disease (stage). Univariate analysis showed that patients with age > or = 75 years, male gender, smoking history advanced stages above stage I disease, KPS < 70, WBC count > or = 8450 and LDH level > or = 500 IU l(-1) have a worse prognosis. With multivariate Cox regression analyses, age > or = 75 years, advanced stages above stage I disease, KPS < 70 and LDH level > or = 500 IU l(-1) were found to be indicators of a poorer prognosis. In conclusion, in our study each of low performance status, older age, advanced stage disease, high LDH level and prognosis were found to be related.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: In order to determine the significance of proliferative activity (PA) in endometrial carcinomas, we analysed the expression of cell cycle-related antigens in routinely processed tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Serial sections of 113 endometrial carcinoma specimens were immunostained with the monoclonal antibody DNA Topoisomerase II-alpha (Ki-S1). In addition to Topoisomerase II-alpha (Ki-S1) staining, histologic type, International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage. FIMO grade, depth of myometrial invasion, tumor size, lymphovascular space invasion, serosal and/or adnexal involvement, lymph node metastasis, age and peritoneal cytology were evaluated as prognostic indicators. The median follow-up time was 23 (range, 1 to 126 ) months. RESULTS: FIGO stage, FIGO grade, tumor size, lymphovascular space invasion, lymph node metastasis, peritoneal cytology and Topoisomerase II-alpha (Ki-S1) expression all significantly influenced survival in univariate analyses (p < or = 0.05). In the Cox regression analysis, Topoisomerase II-alpha (Ki-S1), serosal and/or adnexal involvement, and lymph node metastasis expression were the only variables with independent prognostic impact (p < or = 0.05), whereas FIGO stage, FIGO grade, histologic type FIGO grade, depth of invasion, tumor size, lymphovascular space invasion, age and peritoneal cytology had no independent influence (p > 0.05). Topoisomerase II-alpha (Ki-S1) staining was significantly elevated in advanced (Stage II, III, IV) as opposed to early (Stage I) carcinomas (p < or = 0.05). CONCLUSION: The association with established prognosticators for endometrial carcinomas, and the results of uni- and multivariate analysis indicate that the additional evaluation of DNA Topoisomerase II-alpha (Ki-S1) peptide antibody (PA) is useful for classifying patients into subgroups with low and high risk of relapse which might help to individualize the therapeutic strategy in endometrial carcinomas.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Local cellular immune response and traditional histopathologic parameters in endometrial carcinoma patients 50 years old and younger were compared with those of patients older than 50 years of age. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively compared the clinicopathologic factors and outcomes of 24 younger and 82 older women who were operated on for endometrioid type endometrial carcinoma at our institution. RESULTS: No significant difference was determined in survival with respect to age and menopausal status in patients with endometrial carcinoma. Younger and older age groups had a similar distribution of most pathologic features including myometrial invasion, cervical involvement, lymph node metastasis, vascular invasion, perivascular lymphocytic infiltrates and tumor infiltrating lymphocytes. While older women had higher-grade tumors, younger women had more frequent ovarian metastasis. Tumor infilrating lymphocytes were seen more frequently in the postmenopausal group than those of the premenopausal group. CONCLUSION: The distribution of local cellular immune response, most histopathologic parameters and survival were the same for younger and older women.

RESUMO

The nodules associated with rheumatoid arthritis and rheumatic fever appear with other signs of active rheumatic disease. Rheumatoid nodule-like lesions irrelevant to rheumatoid disease occasionally occur in children who are well and have no complaints associated with rheumatoid diseases. Laboratory tests are normal. Children with benign rheumatoid nodule are not at increased risk for rheumatic disease. No therapy or prophylaxis is required. We present a two-year-old girl with a subcutaneous nodule on the right pretibial region who was diagnosed with clinical and histological findings.

RESUMO

A one-day-old male infant with cleft lip and palate, microcephaly, hypotelorism, microphthalmia and absence of the nose is presented. The intermaxillar segment and nasal bone structure were not seen on radiological examination of the skull. Chromosome examination showed a 46, XY karyotype. On postmortem examination, the cerebrum was seen to be a single lobe. Olfactory nerves, corpus callosum and nasal formation, besides the septum were absent. The first and second ventricles were formed as a single ventricle. These findings were compatible with alobar holoprosencephaly.
