RESUMO

During experimental infection caused by S. aureus, strain Smith, the formation of suppressors of the phagocytic activity of macrophages was induced in the peritoneal cavity and the spleen of intact and infected mice. Thus, in the cultivation of macrophages of the infected mice together with nonadhering cells of the peritoneal exudate of the infected animals the phagocytic index was 0.75 +/- 0.09; in the presence of splenocytes of the infected mice the phagocytic index for macrophages of the intact and infected animals was 0.64 +/- 0.12 and 0.89 +/- 0.04, respectively. Splenocytes of the intact mice, when cultivated together with macrophages of the infected mice, enhanced phagocytic activity during the first hours of cultivation and suppressed it after prolonged cultivation (12 hours); the phagocytic index was 1.37 +/- 0.18 and 0.82 +/- 0.03, respectively.

RESUMO

The direct contact of macrophages with lymphocytes enhanced the functional activity of macrophages: the phagocytosis rate increased from 53.5% to 92.7%, the phagocytosis index increased from 8.7 to 15.7. Splenic lymphocytes obtained from mice with delayed hypersensitivity to staphylococci, when stimulated with staphylococcal corpuscular antigen in vitro, released lymphokines into the culture fluid. These lymphokines enhanced the capacity of macrophages and lymphocytes for mutual contacts.

RESUMO

The results of the studies aimed at the determination of the presence of lymphocytes, influencing the phagocytic activity of macrophages, among the cells of the peritoneal cavity, the spleen and the thymus in intact CBA mice are presented. Macrophages cultivated together with the nonadhering cells of peritoneal exudate were found to possess greater phagocytic activity in comparison with macrophages free of nonadhering cells. The nonadhering cells and splenocytes were also found to possess helper activity with respect to the phagocytic activity of macrophages: their addition to washed out macrophages increased the phagocytic index. Thymocytes showed no such activity.

RESUMO

The adherence of Staphylococcus aureus strains to rabbit epithelial cells has been studied. The strains have been shown to possess similar adhesiveness with respect to the epithelium of the mouth cavity of rabbits. The investigation, carried out with the use of one staphylococcal strain taken as a model, has revealed that the cells of this strain adhere to different areas of the epithelium in the mouth cavity in varying amounts, the amount of adhering bacteria depending on the age of rabbits. The data presented in this work suggest that in staphylococci adhering to rabbit epithelial cells the adhesive function is performed by thermostable and trypsin-resistant staphylococcal cell-wall surface structures of nonprotein nature.

RESUMO

The preparations of alpha/beta- and gamma-interferons have been shown to stimulate the functional activity characteristics of mouse macrophages (phagocytosis, spreading, contacts with lymphocytes, bactericidal properties) obtained from the peritoneal exudate of intact animals and those infected with staphylococci. The immunomodulating action of gamma-interferon is more pronounced than that of the preparation of alpha/beta-interferon.

RESUMO

Adenovirus multiplies in both studied cultures. In the Chinese hamster cells infection is of slowed down, cyclic character. In this case a short subcultivation of cells infected with the virus and the study of the damage distribution in groups of chromosomes are possible. No selectivity was found with respect to the damage of certain group chromosomes.

RESUMO

Efficacy was studied of the use of the drug preparation "Immunal" (LEK, Slovenia [correction of Slovakia]) in a combined treatment of acute bronchitis in children in poor health. The main group of 39 children received conventional treatment supplemented with a course of the drug "Immunal", 10 drops on a three-times daily schedule over 30 days. The use of "Immunal" in a complex therapy of acute bronchitis in children made for a sooner disappearance of clinical manifestations of the illness, decline in ESR, rise in IgG. The immunological properties of "Immunal" are manifested mainly by normalization of the functional state of the phagocytosing cells.

RESUMO

In staphylococcal infection the changes in functional ability of macrophages occur: their oxygen-depending bactericidity and adenosine-desaminase activity are depressed 5-nucleotidase ability increases. Introduction of homologous alpha-IFN in the dose of 1 x 10(3) u/mouse leads to enhancing macrophage bactericidity of the animals infected, inhibits their 5-nucleotidase activity and enhances adenosine desaminase one. Influence of alpha-IFN on the activity of adenosine metabolism enzymes in macrophages can be considered one of the most important mechanisms of its modulating effect in bacterial infections.
