We studied the relationship between shape, size, and developmental time in the embryonic ontogeny of 15 species of the frog genus Physalaemus. As in other anuran exotrophic embryos, shape changes are correlated with size increase and mainly concern tail elongation, decrease in body height, and increase in fin height. Size ranges and developmental times vary interspecifically. Embryos of the P. signifer Clade and the P. gracilis Group are among the largest, are slightly peramorphic, and develop fast regarding congeneric species. Embryos of P. cicada combine the smallest sizes with fast development and the most peramorphic shapes. The paedomorphic shapes of embryos of P. biligonigerus and P. henselii groups are correlated with fast vs. slow developmental times respectively. Trajectories in the P. cuvieri Group are diverse and in general differ in size and developmental time. The embryos of P. cristinae and from the Argentinean lineage of P. cuvieri stand out with the longest development. Sequences of developmental events are overall conserved in the genus, and main differences concern mouthpart ontogeny. This study constitutes the first attempt to evaluate morphological, allometric, and heterochronic parameters of the early ontogeny of anurans and how these can vary and contribute to diversification in taxonomic groups.

To understand the organism's history, we can start assessing the complexity of the biome where they occur. In this study, we used a region of the mitochondrial genome, the rRNA 16S, to evaluate the genetic differentiation in Scinax nebulosus along with its geographical range highlighting important Brazilian biomes as Restinga, Cerrado, Amazon, and Atlantic Forest. Geographically structured genetic divergence was observed within the species S. nebulosus. The values of the fixation index (Фst) and the pairwise Fst index were high and significant regarding this structuring. Besides, the haplotype network corroborates these results with the haplotypes arrangement found by separating the S. nebulosus populations in two major groups: North and Northeast. The lineage delimitation analyses indicate the occurrence of several lineages with divergence mainly between the samples from the Northeast group. Thus, we can suggest that S. nebulosus may present itself as a group of cryptic species due to the genetic characteristics found. The existence of a mosaic of heterogeneous habitats may explain the genetic divergence found, which justifies the existence of cryptic species in this group. However, this hypothesis needs more detail in molecular studies, including large sample sizes and other population and demographic analyses.

The external morphology, internal oral morphology, the chondrocranium and the hyobranchial apparatus of Elachistocleis bumbameuboi, E. cf. piauiensis, E. cesarii and E. bicolor are described and compared with each other and with other species of microhylids using available descriptions from the literature. The general morphology of Elachistocleis species is conservative in many aspects. Differences between species are subtle and are found in the body shape, the edge of the snout, fin height, if the lateral line is evident, the presence of regular pustules in the buccal roof arena, the posterolateral edge of the cartilago suprarostralis, the shape of the fenestra in the occipital region, presence or absence of fenestra hypophysea, the margin of the processus antorbitalis, expansions in the ventrolateral process, the shape and inclination of the fenestra subocularis, whether the subotic process is single or slightly bifid, and the inclination of the processus anterolateralis hyalis.
