RESUMO

Polyethylene (PE), a highly prevalent non-biodegradable polymer in the field of plastics, presents a waste management issue. To alleviate this issue, bio-based PE (bio-PE), derived from renewable resources like corn and sugarcane, offers an environmentally friendly alternative. This review discusses various production methods of bio-PE, including fermentation, gasification, and catalytic conversion of biomass. Interestingly, the bio-PE production volumes and market are expanding due to the growing environmental concerns and regulatory pressures. Additionally, the production of PE and bio-PE biocomposites using agricultural waste as filler materials, highlights the growing demand for sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics. According to previous studies, addition of ≈50% defibrillated corn and abaca fibers into bio-PE matrix and a compatibilizer, results in the highest Young's modulus of 4.61 and 5.81 GPa, respectively. These biocomposites have potential applications in automotive, building construction, and furniture industries. Moreover, the advancement made in abiotic and biotic degradation of PE and PE biocomposites is elucidated to address their environmental impacts. Finally, the paper concludes with insights into the opportunities, challenges, and future perspectives in the sustainable production and utilization of PE and bio-PE biocomposites. In summary, production of PE and bio-PE biocomposites can contribute to a cleaner and sustainable future.

RESUMO

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have exhibited striking application potential in piezoelectric energy harvesting and sensing due to their high piezoelectricity, light weight, and solution processability. However, to date, the application of piezoelectric HOIPs in ultrasound detection has not yet been explored. Here, we report the synthesis of a pair of chiral two-dimensional piezoelectric HOIPs, R-(4-bromo-2-butylammonium)2PbBr4 and S-(4-bromo-2-butylammonium)2PbBr4 [R-(BrBA)2PbBr4 and S-(BrBA)2PbBr4], which show low mechanical strength and significant piezoelectric strain coefficients that are advantageous for mechanoelectrical energy conversion. Benefiting from these virtues, the R-(BrBA)2PbBr4@PBAT and S-(BrBA)2PbBr4@PBAT [PBAT = poly(butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate)] composite films show prominent underwater ultrasound detection performance with a transmission effectivity of 12.0% using a 10.0 MHz probe, comparable with that of a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) device fabricated in the same conditions. Density functional theory calculations reveal that R-(BrBA)2PbBr4 and S-(BrBA)2PbBr4 have a beneficial acoustic impedance (5.07-6.76 MRayl) compatible with that of water (1.5 MRayl), which is responsible for the facile ultrasound-induced electricity generation. These encouraging results open up new possibilities for applying piezoelectric HOIPs in underwater ultrasound detection and imaging technologies.

RESUMO

Separating oxygen from air to create oxygen-enriched gas streams is a process that is significant in both industrial and medical fields. However, the prominent technologies for creating oxygen-enriched gas streams are both energy and infrastructure intensive as they use cryogenic temperatures or materials that adsorb N2 from air. The latter method is less efficient than the methods that adsorb O2 directly. Herein, we show, via a combination of gas adsorption isotherms, gas breakthrough experiments, neutron and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and computational studies, that the metal-organic framework, Al(HCOO)3 (ALF), which is easily prepared at low cost from commodity chemicals, exhibits substantial O2 adsorption and excellent time-dependent O2/N2 selectivity in a range of 50-125 near dry ice/solvent (≈190 K) temperatures. The effective O2 adsorption with ALF at ≈190 K and ≈0.21 bar (the partial pressure of O2 in air) is ≈1.7 mmol/g, and at ice/salt temperatures (≈250 K), it is ≈0.3 mmol/g. Though the kinetics for full adsorption of O2 near 190 K are slower than at temperatures nearer 250 K, the kinetics for initial O2 adsorption are fast, suggesting that O2 separation using ALF with rapid temperature swings at ambient pressures is a potentially viable choice for low-cost air separation applications. We also present synthetic strategies for improving the kinetics of this family of compounds, namely, via Al/Fe solid solutions. To the best of our knowledge, ALF has the highest O2/N2 sorption selectivity among MOF adsorbents without open metal sites as verified by co-adsorption experiments..

RESUMO

Perovskite-related materials show very promising properties in many fields. Pb-free perovskites are particularly interesting, because of the toxicity of Pb. In this study, hybrid double perovskite MA2KBiCl6 (MA = methylammonium cation) was found to have interesting variable temperature behaviours. Both variable temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction, synchrotron powder diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy were conducted to reveal a rhombohedral to cubic phase transition at around 330 K and an order to disorder transition for inorganic cage below 210 K.

RESUMO

Bismuth trihalides, BiX3 (X = F, Cl, Br, and I), have been thrust into prominence recently because of their close chemical relationship to the halide perovskites of lead, which exhibit remarkable performance as active layers in photovoltaic cells and other optoelectronic devices. In the present work, we have used calculations based on density functional theory to explore the energetics and electronic properties of BiX3 in a variety of known and hypothetical structure types. The results for BiX3 are compared with those obtained for the halides of the later rare earths, represented by YX3 and LuX3. The relative thermodynamic stabilities of the known and hypothetical structures are calculated, along with their band gaps. For the BiX3 systems, we have explored the role of lone-pair effects associated with bismuth(III), and for BiI3, we have compared the predicted structural behavior as a function of pressure with the available experimental data. We have also attempted to synthesize LuF3 in the perovskite-related ReO3-type structure, which is predicted to be only ∼7.7 kJ mol-1 above the convex hull. This attempt was unsuccessful but led to the discovery of a new hydrated phase, (H3O)Lu3F10H2O, which is isomorphous with the known ytterbium analogue.

RESUMO

Following the recent discovery of a new family of hybrid ABX3 perovskites where X=(H2 POO)- (hypophosphite), this work reports a facile synthesis for mixed X-site formate perovskites of composition [GUA]Mn(HCOO)3-x (H2 POO)x , with two crystallographically distinct, partially ordered intermediate phases with x=0.84 and 1.53, corresponding to ca. 30 and 50 mol % hypophosphite, respectively. These phases are characterised by single-crystal XRD and solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and their magnetic properties are reported.

RESUMO

CeNbO4.25 is reported to exhibit fast oxygen ion diffusion at moderate temperatures, making this the prototype of a new class of ion conductor with applications in a range of energy generation and storage devices. To date, the mechanism by which this ion transport is achieved has remained obscure, in part due to the long-range commensurately modulated structural motif. Here we show that CeNbO4.25 forms with a unit cell ∼12 times larger than the stoichiometric tetragonal parent phase of CeNbO4 as a result of the helical ordering of Ce(3+) and Ce(4+) ions along z. Interstitial oxygen ion incorporation leads to a cooperative displacement of the surrounding oxygen species, creating interlayer "NbO6" connectivity by extending the oxygen coordination number to 7 and 8. Molecular dynamic simulations suggest that fast ion migration occurs predominantly within the xz plane. It is concluded that the oxide ion diffuses anisotropically, with the major migration mechanism being intralayer; however, when obstructed, oxygen can readily move to an adjacent layer along y via alternate lower energy barrier pathways.

RESUMO

Copper antimony sulfides are regarded as promising catalysts for photo-electrochemical water splitting because of their earth abundance and broad light absorption. The unique photoactivity of copper antimony sulfides is dependent on their various crystalline structures and atomic compositions. Here, a closed-loop workflow is built, which explores Cu-Sb-S compositional space to optimize its photo-electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water, by integrating a high-throughput robotic platform, characterization techniques, and machine learning (ML) optimization workflow. The multi-objective optimization model discovers optimum experimental conditions after only nine cycles of integrated experiments-machine learning loop. Photocurrent testing at 0 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) confirms the expected correlation between the materials' properties and photocurrent. An optimum photocurrent of -186 µA cm-2 is observed on Cu-Sb-S in the ratio of 9:45:46 in the form of single-layer coating on F-doped SnO2 (FTO) glass with a corresponding bandgap of 1.85 eV and 63.2% Cu1+ /Cu species content. The targeted intelligent search reveals a nonobvious CuSbS composition that exhibits 2.3 times greater activity than baseline results from random sampling.

RESUMO

Thermochromic materials are substances that change colour in response to temperature variations. Today, sustainability concerns are the main drivers of thermochromic research, with smart, energy efficient windows being one of primary applications. While vanadium oxides and leuco dyes are traditionally the main thermochromic materials, hydrogels operating based on change of solvation have risen as some of the most promising materials due to their high optical transparency and good solar modulating abilities. In this work, a distinct mechanism for thermochromism arising from the crystalline solid to amorphous solid polymer transition, with a corresponding transition from an opaque state to a transparent state is disclosed. Both ultra-high optical transparency (Tlum up to 99%) and ultra-high solar modulation (ΔTsolar up to 87%) were observed. The transition temperature was tunable from 11 to 61 ͦ C by tuning the polymer structure. When incorporated into applications such as greenhouse materials and thermoelectric devices, significant performance enhancement was observed, due to the thermochromic material functioning as a thermal valve, speeding up solar heat absorbance while inhibiting the cooling process via its phase transition. RESUMO

Increased use of bioplastics, such as polylactic acid (PLA), helps in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, decreases energy consumption and lowers pollution, but its degradation efficiency has much room for improvement. The degradation rate of electrospun PLA fibers of varying diameters ranging from 0.15 to 1.33 µm is measured during hydrolytic degradation under different pH from 5.5 to 10, and during aerobic biodegradation in seawater supplemented with activated sewage sludge. In hydrolytic conditions, varying PLA fiber diameter had significant influence over percentage weight loss (W%L), where faster degradation was achieved for PLA fibers with smaller diameter. W%L was greatest for PLA-5 > PLA-12 > PLA-16 > PLA-20, with average W%L at 30.7%, 27.8%, 17.2% and 14.3% respectively. While different pH environment does not have a significant influence on PLA degradation, with W%L only slightly higher for basic environments. Similarly biodegradation displayed faster degradation for small diameter fibers with PLA-5 attaining the highest degree of biodegradation at 22.8% after 90 days. Hydrolytic degradation resulted in no significant structural change, while biodegradation resulted in significant hydroxyl end capping products on the PLA surface. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging of degraded PLA fibers showed a deteriorated morphology of PLA-5 and PLA-12 fibers with increased adhesion structures and irregularly shaped fibers, while a largely unmodified morphology for PLA-16 and PLA-20.

RESUMO

Large-sized, 2D single crystals of perylene are grown by both solution-cast and physical vapor transport methods. The crystals have a atomically flat parallelogram morphology and the aspect ratios of the lateral extension compared to the thickness are up to 10(3) . The atomically flat feature leads to good interface contact, making a single-crystal field-effect transistor with higher mobility. The mobility of atomically flat crystals can be 10(3) -10(4) times higher than rough crystals.

RESUMO

Electrocatalytic synthesis under mild conditions has become increasingly important as one of the practical alternatives for industrial applications, especially for the green ammonia (NH3) industry. A properly engineered electrocatalyst plays a vital role in the realization of superior catalytic performance. Among various types of promising nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are competitive candidates for developing efficient electrocatalytic NH3 synthesis from simple nitrogen-containing molecules or ions, such as N2 and NO3-. In this review, recent advances in the development of electrocatalysts derived from MOFs for the electrosynthesis of NH3 are collected, categorized, and discussed, including their application in the N2 reduction reaction (NRR) and the NO3- reduction reaction (NO3RR). Firstly, the fundamental principles are illustrated, such as plausible mechanisms of NH3 generation from N2 and NO3-, the apparatus of corresponding electrocatalysis, parameters for evaluation of reaction efficiency, and detection methods of yielding NH3. Then, the electrocatalysts for NRR processes are discussed in detail, including pristine MOFs, MOF-hybrids, MOF-derived N-doped porous carbons, single atomic catalysts from pyrolysis of MOFs, and other MOF-related materials. Subsequently, MOF-related NO3RR processes are also listed and discussed. Finally, the existing challenges and prospects for the rational design and fabrication of electrocatalysts from MOFs for electrochemical NH3 synthesis are presented, such as the evolution of investigation methods with artificial intelligence, innovation in synthetic methods of MOF-related catalysts, advancement of characterization techniques, and extended electrocatalytic reactions.

RESUMO

Cold spray (CS) is an emerging technology for repairing and 3D additive manufacturing of a variety of metallic components using deformable metal powders. In CS deposition, gas type, gas pressure, gas temperature, and powder feed rate are the four key process parameters that have been intensively studied. Spray angle, spray gun traverse speed, and standoff distance (SoD) are the other three process parameters that have been less investigated but are also important, especially when depositing on uneven substrates or building up 3D freeform structures. Herein, the effects of spray angle, traverse speed, and SoD during CS deposition have been investigated holistically on a single material system (i.e., Al2219 powders on Al2219-T6 substrate). The coatings' mass gain, thickness, porosity, and residual stress have been characterized, and the results show that spray angle and traverse speed exercise much more effects than SoD in determining coatings' buildup. Finite element method (FEM) modeling and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation have been carried out to understand the effects of these three parameters for implementing CS as repairing and additive manufacturing using aluminum-based alloy powders.

RESUMO

Spent coffee grounds (SCGs) are waste residues arising from the process of coffee brewing and are usually sent to landfills, causing environmental concerns. SCGs contain a considerable amount of fatty acids and is therefore a promising green alternative bio-based phase change material (PCMs) compared to conventional organic and inorganic PCMs. In this study, the extraction of coffee oil from SCGs was conducted using three different organic solvents-ethanol, acetone, and hexane. The chemical composition, chemical, and thermophysical properties of these coffee oil extracts were studied to evaluate their feasibility as a bio-based PCM. Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis indicated that coffee oil contains about 60-80 % of fatty acids while the phase transition temperature of the coffee oil extracts is approximately 4.5 ± 0.72 °C, with latent heat values of 51.15 ± 1.46 J/g as determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and DSC results of coffee oil extracts after thermal cycling revealed good thermal and chemical stability. An application study to evaluate coffee oil extract as a potential cold therapy modality showed that it can maintain temperatures below normal body temperature for up to 46 min. In conclusion, this work exemplifies the potential of SCGs as a promising green and sustainable resource for bio-based PCMs for low-temperature thermal energy storage applications such as cold-chain transportation and cold therapy.

RESUMO

As basic optical elements, waveplates with anisotropic electromagnetic responses are imperative for manipulating light polarization. Conventional waveplates are manufactured from bulk crystals (e.g., quartz and calcite) through a series of precision cutting and grinding steps, which typically result in large size, low yield, and high cost. In this study, a bottom-up method is used to grow ferrocene crystals with large anisotropy to demonstrate self-assembled ultrathin true zero-order waveplates without additional machining processing, which is particularly suited for nanophotonic integration. The van der Waals ferrocene crystals exhibit high birefringence (Δn (experiment) = 0.149  ±  0.002 at 636 nm), low dichroism Δκ (experiment) = -0.0007 at 636 nm), and a potentially broad operating range (550 nm to 20 µm) as suggested by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. In addition, the grown waveplate's highest and the lowest principal axes (n1 and n3 , respectively) are in the a-c plane, where the fast axis is along one natural edge of the ferrocene crystal, rendering them readily usable. The as-grown, wavelength-scale-thick waveplate allows the development of further miniaturized systems via tandem integration.

RESUMO

Graphene-like 2D coordination polymers (GCPs) have been of central research interest in recent decades with significant impact in many fields. According to classical coordination chemistry, Cu(II) can adopt the dsp2 hybridization to form square planar coordination geometry, but not Cu(I); this is why so far, there has been few 2D layered structures synthesized from Cu(I) precursors. Herein a pair of isostructural GCPs synthesized by the coordination of benzenehexathiol (BHT) ligands with Cu(I) and Cu(II) ions, respectively, is reported. Spectroscopic characterizations indicate that Cu(I) and Cu(II) coexist with a near 1:1 ratio in both GCPs but remain indistinguishable with a fractional oxidation state of +1.5 on average, making these two GCPs a unique pair of Creutz-Taube mixed-valence 2D structures. Based on density functional theory calculations, an intramolecular pseudo-redox mechanism is further uncovered whereby the radicals on BHT ligands can oxidize Cu(I) or reduce Cu(II) ions upon coordination, thus producing isostructures with distinct electron configurations. For the first time, it is demonstrated that using Cu(I) or Cu(II), one can achieve 2D isostructures, indicating an unusual fact that a neutral periodic structure can host a different number of total electrons as ground states, which may open a new chapter for 2D materials.

RESUMO

Melilite-type [A(2)](2)[B(I)](2)[B(II)(2)O(7)](2) gallates are promising ion conducting electrolytes for deployment in solid oxide fuel cells. Single crystals of [CaLa](2)[Ga](2)[Ga(2)O(7)](2), grown in an optical floating zone furnace, were investigated using a combination of transmission electron microscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Strong anisotropic displacements of oxygen arise from the structural misfit between the interlayer Ca/La cations and the [Ga]-[Ga(2)O(7)] tetrahedral layers. A model employing two-dimensional modulation achieves bond lengths and bond angles that preserve satisfactory bond valence sums throughout the structure. The melilite belongs to the tetragonal superspace group P42(1)m(α, α, 0)00s(α, α, 0)000, α = 0.2160(5), with a subcell metric of a = 7.9383(2) Å, c = 5.2641(3) Å, onto which modulation vectors are superimposed: q(1) = α (a* + b*), q(2) = α (-a* + b*). Both displacive (cation and anion) and occupational (cation) modulations contribute to incommensuration. The analysis of structural adjustments that accompany changes in temperature and composition provides assurance that the crystal chemical model is correct. By better understanding the flexibility of this modulated structure a rational approach toward crystallochemical optimization of electrolyte performance by enhancing oxygen mobility becomes feasible.

RESUMO

A combination of gas adsorption and gas breakthrough measurements show that the metal-organic framework, Al(HCOO)3 (ALF), which can be made inexpensively from commodity chemicals, exhibits excellent CO2 adsorption capacities and outstanding CO2/N2 selectivity that enable it to remove CO2 from dried CO2-containing gas streams at elevated temperatures (323 kelvin). Notably, ALF is scalable, readily pelletized, stable to SO2 and NO, and simple to regenerate. Density functional theory calculations and in situ neutron diffraction studies reveal that the preferential adsorption of CO2 is a size-selective separation that depends on the subtle difference between the kinetic diameters of CO2 and N2. The findings are supported by additional measurements, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and variable temperature powder and single-crystal x-ray diffraction.

RESUMO

Melilite-type gallium oxides are potential intermediate temperature electrolytes for solid oxide fuel cells. Single crystals of [CaNd](2)[Ga](2)[Ga(2)O(7)](2) grown using an optical floating zone furnace have been investigated using transmission electron microscopy and powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The anion array topologically conforms to a [(3.5.4.5)(2), 3.5.3.5] network that contains distorted pentagonal tunnels. The distortion is necessary to achieve space filling and accommodate structural misfit between the layers. Satisfactory bond lengths and angles are obtained through two-dimensional modulation in the tetragonal based plane, leading to five-dimensional symmetry in the superspace group P(4⁻)2(1)m(α,α,0)00s((a⁻)a,0)000, α = 0.2319(2), with modulation vectors q(1) = α(a* + b*) and q(2) = α(-a* + b*). Both displacive and occupational modulations are found. Through this mechanism, melilites are primed to accommodate mobile oxygen interstitials, suggesting a rational approach to crystallochemical tailoring that will enhance ionic diffusion and optimize electrolyte performance.
