RESUMO

Acute lung injury (ALI) is a common complication in patients with severe burns and has a complex pathogenesis and high morbidity and mortality rates. A variety of drugs have been identified in the clinic for the treatment of ALI, but they have toxic side effects caused by easy degradation in the body and distribution throughout the body. In recent years, as the understanding of the mechanism underlying ALI has improved, scholars have developed a variety of new nanomaterials that can be safely and effectively targeted for the treatment of ALI. Most of these methods involve nanomaterials such as lipids, organic polymers, peptides, extracellular vesicles or cell membranes, inorganic nanoparticles and other nanomaterials, which are targeted to reach lung tissues to perform their functions through active targeting or passive targeting, a process that involves a variety of cells or organelles. In this review, first, the mechanisms and pathophysiological features of ALI occurrence after burn injury are reviewed, potential therapeutic targets for ALI are summarized, existing nanomaterials for the targeted treatment of ALI are classified, and possible problems and challenges of nanomaterials in the targeted treatment of ALI are discussed to provide a reference for the development of nanomaterials for the targeted treatment of ALI.

Anthracnose decay caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides greatly shortens the shelf life and commercial quality of mango fruit. Putrescine (1,4-Diaminobutane) is involved in modulating plant defense to various environmental stresses. In this research, in vivo and in vitro tests were used to explore the antifungal activity and the underlying mechanism of putrescine against C. gloeosporioides in mango fruit after harvested. In vivo tests suggested that putrescine markedly delayed the occurrence of disease and limited the spots expansion on inoculated mango fruit. Further analysis exhibited that putrescine treatment enhanced disease resistance, along with enhanced activities of chitinase (CHI), ß-1,3-glucanase (GLU), phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), cinnamate-4-hydroxylase (C4H), 4-coumarate coenzyme A ligase (4CL), polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and the accumulation of lignin, flavonoid, phenolics, and anthocyanin in infected mango fruit. In addition, in vitro tests showed that putrescine exerted strongly antifungal activity against C. gloeosporioides. Putrescine induced the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and severe lipid peroxidation damage in C. gloeosporioides mycelia, resulting in the leakage of soluble protein, soluble sugar, nucleic acids, K+ and Ca2+ of C. gloeosporioides mycelia. The mycelium treated with putrescine showed severe deformity and shrinkage, and even cracking. Taken together, putrescine could effectively reduce the incidence rate and severity of anthracnose disease possibly through direct fungicidal effect and indirect induced resistance mechanism, thus showing great potential to be applied to disease control.

OBJECTIVES: Autoimmunity may play a role in endometriosis. The association between endometriosis and RA remains unknown. This study was conducted to identify any evidence for this relationship. METHODS: This 13-year, nationwide, population-based, retrospective cohort study analysed the risk of RA in a cohort of individuals with endometriosis. We investigated the incidence of RA among patients with endometriosis using data from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000, which is maintained by the Taiwan National Health Research Institutes. We used propensity scores to match comorbidities in the two cohorts. Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox proportional hazard model were employed to analyse the association between endometriosis and RA among patients with different potential risks. RESULTS: Patients with endometriosis [adjusted hazard ratio (HR) 1.75, 95% CI 1.27, 2.41], aged ≥45 years (adjusted HR 1.50, 95% CI 1.06-2.13) and with autoimmune disease (adjusted HR 6.99, 95% CI 2.84-17.21) had a significantly higher risk of RA. The analyses also showed that when stratified by age, comorbidities and medication use, the risk of RA in patients with endometriosis was also higher than in those without endometriosis. CONCLUSIONS: This 14-year, nationwide, population-based retrospective cohort study revealed that patients with endometriosis have a higher risk of RA. In the clinical management of patients with RA, rheumatologists should be especially mindful of the possibility of underlying endometriosis.

The increasing utilization of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) and their release into the environment has made it imperative to elucidate their impact on the ecological system including plants. However, their potential toxic impact and mechanisms on plant growth are still unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of CuO NPs and released Cu ions on seed germination and early seedling growth, as well as physiological and biochemical parameters of Oryza sativa. The results showed that CuO NPs at high concentration significantly inhibited seed germination and early seedling growth. The toxicity of CuO NPs originated from the particulate NPs rather than the released Cu2+. The phytotoxicity of CuO NPs to rice seed germination and seedling growth probably induced by high Cu accumulation along with the lignification and oxidative damage. The work presented here will increase our knowledge of phytotoxicity of CuO NPs.

INTRODUCTION: This population-based cohort study investigates the association between osteoarthritis (OA) and dementia as well as the connection between NSAIDs and dementia. METHODS: We chose the samples from the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database and then divided them into two groups, which were then matched 1: 1 by propensity score. The first group was the OA group that contained patients with newly diagnosed OA and the second group was the non-OA group. We used the χ2 test, Student t test, Kaplan-Meier analysis, and Cox proportional hazard model for different purposes. RESULTS: The prevalence of dementia in the OA group was higher than that in the non-OA group. The adjusted hazard ratio of the former was 1.42 (95% CI, 1.30-1.54). We also found that etoricoxib and diclofenac might reduce the incidence of dementia. CONCLUSION: Patients with OA might have a higher risk of dementia. Both etoricoxib and diclofenac might lower the risk of dementia in patients with OA.

BACKGROUND: Most existing studies measure atrial septal defect (ASD) outcomes based on morbidity rates such as atrial arrhythmias and heart failure rather than the functional assessment of physical capacity postprocedure. Few studies have evaluated cardiopulmonary function in ASD children. This study represents the largest sample population in the current research, encompassing a total of 122 Taiwanese children with ASD who had undergone treatment, to evaluate cardiopulmonary functional capacity through the implementation of cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), and to investigate whether variations in treatment may impact their cardiopulmonary function. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study with the data collected from January 2010 to December 2021. All patients and controls (age-, sex-, and body mass index-matched) underwent CPET and pulmonary function testing. RESULTS: In total, 122 ASD patients (surgically closed ASDs 27, transcatheter-closed ASDs 48, and follow-up unrepaired ASD 47) and 244 healthy controls were recruited. The ASD group exhibited lower peak metabolic equivalent (MET), peak oxygen consumption (VO 2 , p < 0.001), and peak minute ventilation ( p = 0.028) along with MET and VO 2 at the anaerobic threshold (AT) ( p = 0.012) compared to the control group. No statistically significant differences were observed in the pulmonary function test. Among surgically closed, transcatheter closed and unrepaired ASD subgroups, no significant variances were seen in CPET and pulmonary function tests. CONCLUSION: Taiwanese ASD children exhibited diminished exercise capacity and cardiopulmonary performance compared to their healthy counterparts. Differences among specific ASD treatments in cardiopulmonary tests were non-significant.

Nucleophosmin 1 (NPM1, also known as B23) is a multifunctional protein involved in a variety of cellular processes, including ribosomal maturation, centrosome replication, maintenance of genomic stability, cell cycle control, and apoptosis. NPM1 is the most commonly mutated gene in adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and is present in approximately 40% of all AML cases. The underlying mechanisms of mutant NPM1 (NPM1mut) in leukemogenesis remain unclear. This review summarizes the structure and physiological function of NPM1, mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of NPM1-mutated AML, and the potential role of NPM1 as a therapeutic target. It is reported that dysfunctional NPM1 might cause AML pathogenesis via its role as a protein chaperone, inhibiting differentiation of leukemia stem cells and regulation of non-coding RNAs. Besides conventional chemotherapies, NPM1 is a promising therapeutic target against AML that warrants further investigation. NPM1-based therapeutic strategies include inducing nucleolar relocalisation of NPM1 mutants, interfering with NPM1 oligomerization, and NPM1 as an immune response target.

INTRODUCTION: Immunonutritional status is associated with the survival of DLBCL. This multicenter retrospective study aimed to explore the prognostic value of Prognostic Nutrition Index (PNI) in DLBCL patients by using propensity score matched analysis (PSM). METHODS: A total of 990 DLBCL cases were recruited from 5 centers of Huaihai Lymphoma Working Group (HHLWG). A 1:1 PSM analysis was performed using the nearest-neighbor method, with a caliper size of 0.02. Cox regression analysis was used to examine factors associated with survival. RESULTS: The median age at diagnosis was 62 years and 52.5% were males, with the 3-y overall survival of 65.1%. According to the MaxStat analysis, 44 was the optimal cut-off point of PNI. After PSM analysis, a total of 282 patients in PNI < 44 group could be propensity matched to PNI ≥ 44 patients, creating a group of 564 patients. Multivariable analysis revealed that PNI, age, central nervous system involvement and International Prognostic Index (IPI) were independent prognostic factors for DLBCL. Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated that patients with low PNI in Ann Arbor Stage (III/VI), ECOG (<2), IPI (LR+LIR), GCB, and BCL-2 negative groups had a poor prognosis. DISCUSSION: PNI could accurately stratify the prognosis of DLBCL after PSM analysis.

BACKGROUND: CD5-positive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (CD5+ DLBCL) is a rare subtype of DLBCL with invasive clinical features and poor prognosis. Current clinical variables based on prognostic systems for DLBCL are inadequate to accurately stratify the prognosis of CD5+ DLBCL. METHODS: A total of 195 CD5+ DLBCL patients were retrospectively recruited from nine centers in Huaihai Lymphoma Working Group. MaxStat analysis was used to identify optimal cutoff points for continuous variables; univariable and multivariable Cox analyses were used for variable selection; Kaplan-Meier curve was used to analyze the value of variables on prognosis; and C-index, Brier score, and decision curve analysis were measured for predicting model performance. RESULTS: The derivation and validation cohorts consisted of 131 and 64 patients. Of the whole cohort, median age at diagnosis was 61 years, of whom 100 (51.28%) were males and the 5-year overall survival rate was 42.1%. MYC, BCL-2, and the coexpression of MYC/BCL-2 could distinguish the survival of CD5+ DLBCL. Multivariable analysis showed that age, IPI, red blood cell count, neutrophil count, MYC expression, and hepatosplenomegaly were independent predictors, and the prognostic nomogram was developed. The C-index of the nomogram was 0.809 in the derivation and 0.770 in the validation cohort. Decision curve analysis proved that compared with IPI, the specific nomogram showed a better identification in CD5+ DLBCL. CONCLUSION: The proposed nomogram provided a valuable tool for prognosis prediction in patients with CD5+ DLBCL.

Biochars were prepared by pyrolyzing mango peel waste at 300, 400, 500, 600 and 700 °C. Various characterizations were carried out to explore the effect of pyrolysis temperature on the biochars. The data indicated that the physical and chemical properties of biochar such as pH, element ratio, specific surface area and functional groups changed with the increase of pyrolysis temperature. The yield and contents of hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen decreased, while contents of the ash and carbon, pH and specific surface area of the biochars increased. In addition, the molar ratios of H/C, O/C and (O + N)/C decreased. In this study, batch adsorption experiments for Cd(ii) adsorption were performed with initial Cd(ii) concentrations of 10-300 mg L-1, contact times of 0-2880 min, various pH (2-8) and biochar dose (1-20 g L-1). Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics models were better fits than other models, suggesting the dominant adsorption of mango peel biochars is via monolayer adsorption. Biochar derived at 500 °C was found to have the highest adsorption capacity of 13.28 mg g-1 among all biochars and the adsorption efficiency was still 67.7% of the initial adsorption capacity after desorption for 4 times. Based on adsorption kinetics and isotherm analysis in combination with EDS, FTIR and XRD analysis, it was concluded that cation exchange, complexation with surface functional groups and precipitation with minerals were the dominant mechanisms responsible for Cd adsorption by mango peel biochar. The study suggested that mango peel can be recycled to biochars and can be used as a low-cost adsorbent for Cd(ii) removal from wastewater.

The anthracnose rot of postharvest mango fruit is a devastating fungal disease often resulting in tremendous quality deterioration and postharvest losses. Nitric oxide (NO), as an important signaling molecule, is involved in the responses to postharvest fruit diseases. In the present study, the effectiveness of NO donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) to prevent anthracnose of "Tainong" mango fruit caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides was evaluated through in vivo and in vitro tests. Results from in vivo test showed that SNP treatment effectively inhibited the lesion diameter and disease incidence on inoculated mango fruit during storage. SNP treatment could regulate hydrogen peroxide levels by reinforcing the activities of catalase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and ascorbate peroxidase. Furthermore, SNP elevated the accumulation of lignin, total phenolics, anthocyanin, and flavonoids and the activities of chitinase and ß-1,3-glucanase. In addition, in vitro tests indicated that SNP markedly suppressed mycelial growth and spore germination of C. gloeosporioides through damaging plasma membrane integrity and increasing the leakage of soluble sugar and protein. Our results suggested that SNP could suppress anthracnose decay in postharvest mango fruit, possibly by directly suppressing pathogen growth and indirectly triggering host defense responses.
