OBJECTIVE: To determine the role of motion-in-depth perception and static stereopsis in strabismics, and factors associated with the perception of motion-in-depth. METHODS: A total of 84 strabismic patients (including 57 intermittent exotropes, 12 constant exotropes and 15 esotropes) and 16 normal controls were recruited. Binocular fusion ability, static stereopsis and motion-in-depth perception were tested using the computer-generated stereoscopic stimuli. The correlations between these tests were analyzed. RESULTS: There was a significant correlation between motion-in-depth perception and static stereopsis in strabismics. Only patients with static stereopsis demonstrated the perception of motion-in-depth. A positive correlation was found between motion-in-depth perception thresholds and static stereopsis in intermittent exotropes. All participants in the control group had motion-in-depth perception and static stereopsis. The participants with stereopsis had significantly lower thresholds than those with strabismus (P<0.01). The perception of motion-in-depth varied with the type of strabismus: 87.7% of the intermittent exotropes exhibited motion-in-depth perception, whereas none of the constant strabismics were able to pass the motion-in-depth perception tests. The perception of motion-in-depth was correlated with the presence of binocular fusion. CONCLUSIONS: Motion-in-depth perception is correlated with static stereopsis in strabismics. The perception of motion-in-depth varies with the type of strabismus: only intermittent exotropes have the perception of motion-in-depth.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate visual performance of monocular amblyopia before and after correcting higher order aberrations (HOAs) with adaptive optics system. METHODS: Visual acuity (VA) and contrast sensitivity (CS) thresholds of ten monocular amblyopes were measured before and after correcting higher order aberrations with adaptive optics system. The change of them were analyzed. RESULTS: A significant improvement of 0.16 times on average (P = 0.005) visual acuity of the amblyopic eyes and 0.34 times on average (P < 0.001) CS thresholds, mainly improved at 24 cpd were observed. CONCLUSION: The visual performance of amblyopic eyes can be improved after correcting higher order aberrations, and HOAs affect CS at some high spatial frequency.

AIM: To assess the effect of experimentally induced anisometropia on binocularity in normal adults with glasses-free three-dimensional (3D) technique. METHODS: Totally 54 healthy medical students with normal binocularity in the cross-sectional study were enrolled. Anisometropia was induced by placing trail lenses over the right eye, in 0.5 D steps including lenses of -0.5, -1, -1.5, -2, -2.5 D (hyperopic anisometropia) and lenses of +0.5, +1, +1.5, +2, +2.5 D (myopic anisometropia). The glasses-free 3D technique was used to evaluated not only fine stereopsis, but also coarse stereopsis, dynamic stereopsis, foveal suppression, and peripheral suppression in these subjects. One-way analysis of variance was used to compare quantitative data such as fine stereopsis, coarse stereopsis. Pearson's Chi-square test was performed to compare categorical data such as dynamic stereopsis, foveal suppression and peripheral suppression. RESULTS: The subjects showed a statistically significant decline in fine stereopsis, coarse stereopsis, and dynamic stereopsis with increasing levels of anisometropia (P<0.001). Binocularity was affected when induced anisometropia was more than 1 D (P<0.05). Foveal suppression and peripheral suppression were evident and increased in proportion to anisometropia (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: The relatively low degrees of anisometropia may have a potentially significant effect on high-grade binocular interaction. The mechanisms underlying the defect of binocularity seem to involve not only foveal suppression, but also peripheral suppression.

Background. Little is known about the induction of functional and brain structural reorganization in hemiplegic cerebral palsy (HCP) by constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT). Objective. We aimed to explore the specific molecular mechanism of functional and structural plasticity related to CIMT in HCP. Methods. The mice were divided into a control group and HCP groups with different interventions (unconstraint-induced movement therapy [UNCIMT], CIMT or siRNA-Nogo-A [SN] treatment): the HCP, HCP+UNCIMT, HCP+CIMT, HCP+SN, and HCP+SN+CIMT groups. Rotarod and front-limb suspension tests, immunohistochemistry, Golgi-Cox staining, transmission electron microscopy, and Western blot analyses were applied to measure motor function, neurons and neurofilament density, dendrites/axon areas, myelin integrity, and Nogo-A/NgR/RhoA/ROCK expression in the motor cortex. Results. The mice in the HCP+CIMT group had better motor function, greater neurons and neurofilament density, dendrites/axon areas, myelin integrity, and lower Nogo-A/NgR/RhoA/ROCK expression in the motor cortex than the HCP and HCP+UNCIMT groups (P < .05). Moreover, the expression of Nogo-A/NgR/RhoA/ROCK, the improvement of neural remodeling and motor function of mice in the HCP+SN group were similar to those in the HCP+CIMT group (P > .05). The neural remodeling and motor function of the HCP+SN+CIMT group were significantly greater than those in the HCP+SN and HCP+CIMT groups (P < .05). Motor function were positively correlated with the density of neurons (r = 0.450 and 0.309, respectively; P < .05) and neurofilament (r = 0.717 and 0.567, respectively; P < .05). Conclusions. CIMT might promote the remodeling of neurons, neurofilament, dendrites/axon areas, and myelin in the motor cortex by partially inhibiting the Nogo-A/NgR/RhoA/ROCK pathway, thereby promoting the improvement of motor function in HCP mice.

BACKGROUND: Infectious endophthalmitis is a severe ocular inflammation which can cause devastating visual loss. The aim of the study was to identify the demographic and clinical features of infectious endophthalmitis in Western China for better prophylaxis and treatment of this disease. METHODS: A.retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted based on the medical records of inpatients having infectious endophthalmitis in a tertiary referral center in Western China between 2005 and 2016. RESULTS: The common cause of infectious endophthalmitis was trauma (82.6%), endogenous (7.8%), ophthalmic surgery (6.9%), and corneal ulcer with perforation (2.7%). These four etiological groups differed in age, gender, enucleation rate, visual outcome, etc. The number of cases in the first 6 years accounted for 38.7% of the total collection, which in the second 6 years accounted for 61.3%. The etiology patterns were different between these two periods. Altogether 51.3% of patients received pars plana vitrectomy, 13.9% of patients underwent evisceration, and the remaining 34.8% received other treatments. Of the 670 cases that had culture results, 266 (39.7%) were culture positive and 177 (66.5%) were Gram-positive organisms, 64 (24.1%) were Gram-negative organisms, 11 (4.1%) had fungal infection, and 14 (5.3%) were infected by multiple pathogens. CONCLUSIONS: There was an upward trend of the occurrence of infectious endophthalmitis in Western China for the past decade. The demographic and clinical characteristics of infectious endophthalmitis in Western China had its own characteristics and differed from those of developed countries. Here, open globe trauma was the most common cause of endophthalmitis, most traumatic endophthalmitis patients were male, and most of the injuries were work related, implicate that we should strengthen the education and application of ocular safety regulation specifically targeting the workplace.

AIM: To investigate the association between lumican gene -1554 T/C polymorphism and high myopia susceptibility. METHODS: We searched the published literature in the Medline, Embase, and CBM databases from inception to July 2013. A meta-analysis was performed by the programs RevMan 5.1 and Stata 12.0, and the odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated in fixed or random effect model based on heterogeneity test among studies. RESLUTS: Seven case-control studies with a total of 1 233 cases and 936 controls were included. A statistical significant association with high myopia was observed in the recessive model (TT vs CT+CC: OR=1.92; 95%CI=1.14-3.23) and codominant model (TT vs CT: OR=1.81, 95%CI=1.19-2.75). CONCLUSION: The present meta-analysis suggested that lumican -1554 T/C polymorphism might be moderately associated with high myopia susceptibility. This conclusion warrants confirmation by further studies.

AIM: To investigate the relationship between higher-order aberration (HOA) and myopic progression in school children. METHODS: Between April 23, 2011 and August 29, 2011 in the children's myopia outpatient clinic of the West China Hospital of Sichuan University, 148 eyes of 74 schoolchildren were reviewed. HOAs for a 6-mm pupil were measured with an aberrometer. Myopic progression rate was defined according to the change in spherical equivalent refraction (SER) divided by the time span (years). Subjects with myopic progression rate of ≥0.50 diopters (D) were classified as the 'fast' group and the subjects with myopic progression rate of <0.50D were classified as the 'slow' group. A retrospective study was conducted to compare HOA between the two groups, using root mean square (RMS) values and Zernike coefficients. RESULTS: The RMS values of HOA (t=2.316, P=0.02), HOA without Z4 (0) (t=2.224, P=0.03), third-order aberrations (t'=2.62, P=0.01), and coma (t'=2.49, P=0.01) were significantly higher in the fast group than those in the slow group. The individual Zernike coefficients of Z3 (-1) (t=-2.072, P=0.04) and Z5 (1) (Z =-2.627, P=0.01) displayed statistically significant differences between the two groups. Significant correlations were found between the RMS values of HOA (r=0.193, P=0.019), RMS values of HOA without Z4 (0) (r=0.23, P =0.005), RMS values of coma (r=0.235, P=0.004), RMS values of third-order aberrations (r=0.243, P =0.003), and the progression rate. CONCLUSION: Our results provide evidence of a relationship between HOA and myopic progression. In a future prospective longitudinal study, we aim to verify whether HOA is a risk factor for myopic progression.
