RESUMO

Group awareness is playing a major role in the efficiency of mission planning and decision-making processes, particularly those involving spatially distributed collaborative entities. The performance of this concept has remarkably increased with the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT). Indeed, a myriad of innovative devices are being extensively deployed to collaboratively recognize and track events, objects, and activities of interest. A wide range of IoT-based approaches have focused on representing and managing shared information through formal operators for group awareness. However, despite their proven results, these approaches are still refrained by the inaccuracy of information being shared between the collaborating distributed entities. In order to address this issue, we propose in this paper a new belief-management-based model for a collaborative Internet of Drones (IoD). The proposed model allows drones to decide the most appropriate operators to apply in order to manage the uncertainty of perceived or received information in different situations. This model uses Hierarchical Analysis Process (AHP) with Subjective Logic (SL) to represent and combine opinions of different sources. We focus on purely collaborative drone networks where the group awareness will also be provided as service to collaborating entities.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are widely available in the current market to be used either for recreation as a hobby or to serve specific industrial requirements, such as agriculture and construction. However, illegitimate and criminal usage of UAVs is also on the rise which introduces their effective identification and detection as a research challenge. This paper proposes a novel machine learning-based for efficient identification and detection of UAVs. Specifically, an improved UAV identification and detection approach is presented using an ensemble learning based on the hierarchical concept, along with pre-processing and feature extraction stages for the Radio Frequency (RF) data. Filtering is applied on the RF signals in the detection approach to improve the output. This approach consists of four classifiers and they are working in a hierarchical way. The sample will pass the first classifier to check the availability of the UAV, and then it will specify the type of the detected UAV using the second classifier. The last two classifiers will handle the sample that is related to Bebop and AR to specify their mode. Evaluation of the proposed approach with publicly available dataset demonstrates better efficiency compared to existing detection systems in the literature. It has the ability to investigate whether a UAV is flying within the area or not, and it can directly identify the type of UAV and then the flight mode of the detected UAV with accuracy around 99%.

This paper proposes a modified architecture of the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) mobile network to provide services for the Internet of Things (IoT). This is achieved by allocating a narrow bandwidth and transferring the scheduling functions from the eNodeB base station to an NB-IoT controller. A method for allocating uplink and downlink resources of the LTE/NB-IoT hybrid technology is applied to ensure the Quality of Service (QoS) from end-to-end. This method considers scheduling traffic/resources on the NB-IoT controller, which allows eNodeB planning to remain unchanged. This paper also proposes a prioritization approach within the IoT traffic to provide End-to-End (E2E) QoS in the integrated LTE/NB-IoT network. Further, we develop "smart queue" management algorithms for the IoT traffic prioritization. To demonstrate the feasibility of our approach, we performed a number of experiments using simulations. We concluded that our proposed approach ensures high end-to-end QoS of the real-time traffic by reducing the average end-to-end transmission delay.

Road geometric design standards provide various possibilities for merging freeways with a decreasing number of lanes. In this study, an alternative design (i.e. taper design) is investigated and compared with the standard design under three different heavy vehicle compositions to understand driving performance in relation to the flow of traffic. Taper design is not always the first choice in the road geometric design guidelines and the designer has to provide arguments for selecting this design. Taper design and its comparison with other alternatives are also not well explored in literature. In this study, a driving simulator was used to examine and compare the performance of these two designs under different heavy vehicle compositions. Qualitative results showed that the perceived safety was better for the standard design compared to the taper design. Mean speed, acceleration, standard deviation of acceleration/deceleration, and cumulative lane changes were chosen as behavioural parameters to compare these two designs using MANOVA and repeated measures ANOVA. Results revealed that drivers' discomfort in performing merging manoeuvres was greatest in case of a taper design and when the percentage of heavy vehicles was moderate (15%). Overall, the standard design was found to be more favourable. Practitioner summary: Driving behaviour at merging freeways with a decreasing number of lanes is underexplored. We analysed safety in driving behaviour considering heavy vehicles for taper and standard designs provided in Dutch guidelines using a driving simulator. The standard design was found to be safer and the presence of moderate heavy vehicles caused more disturbances in driving behaviour.

Low-cost sensor technology can potentially revolutionise the area of air pollution monitoring by providing high-density spatiotemporal pollution data. Such data can be utilised for supplementing traditional pollution monitoring, improving exposure estimates, and raising community awareness about air pollution. However, data quality remains a major concern that hinders the widespread adoption of low-cost sensor technology. Unreliable data may mislead unsuspecting users and potentially lead to alarming consequences such as reporting acceptable air pollutant levels when they are above the limits deemed safe for human health. This article provides scientific guidance to the end-users for effectively deploying low-cost sensors for monitoring air pollution and people's exposure, while ensuring reasonable data quality. We review the performance characteristics of several low-cost particle and gas monitoring sensors and provide recommendations to end-users for making proper sensor selection by summarizing the capabilities and limitations of such sensors. The challenges, best practices, and future outlook for effectively deploying low-cost sensors, and maintaining data quality are also discussed. For data quality assurance, a two-stage sensor calibration process is recommended, which includes laboratory calibration under controlled conditions by the manufacturer supplemented with routine calibration checks performed by the end-user under final deployment conditions. For large sensor networks where routine calibration checks are impractical, statistical techniques for data quality assurance should be utilised. Further advancements and adoption of sophisticated mathematical and statistical techniques for sensor calibration, fault detection, and data quality assurance can indeed help to realise the promised benefits of a low-cost air pollution sensor network.
