BACKGROUND: Antidepressants are used to treat acute depression in patients with bipolar I disorder, but their effect as maintenance treatment after the remission of depression has not been well studied. METHODS: We conducted a multisite, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of maintenance of treatment with adjunctive escitalopram or bupropion XL as compared with discontinuation of antidepressant therapy in patients with bipolar I disorder who had recently had remission of a depressive episode. Patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to continue treatment with antidepressants for 52 weeks after remission or to switch to placebo at 8 weeks. The primary outcome, assessed in a time-to-event analysis, was any mood episode, as defined by scores on scales measuring symptoms of hypomania or mania, depression, suicidality, and mood-episode severity; additional treatment or hospitalization for mood symptoms; or attempted or completed suicide. Key secondary outcomes included the time to an episode of mania or hypomania or depression. RESULTS: Of 209 patients with bipolar I disorder who participated in an open-label treatment phase, 150 who had remission of depression were enrolled in the double-blind phase in addition to 27 patients who were enrolled directly. A total of 90 patients were assigned to continue treatment with the prescribed antidepressant for 52 weeks (52-week group) and 87 were assigned to switch to placebo at 8 weeks (8-week group). The trial was stopped before full recruitment was reached owing to slow recruitment and funding limitations. At 52 weeks, 28 of the patients in the 52-week group (31%) and 40 in the 8-week group (46%) had a primary-outcome event. The hazard ratio for time to any mood episode in the 52-week group relative to the 8-week group was 0.68 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.43 to 1.10; P = 0.12 by log-rank test). A total of 11 patients in the 52-week group (12%) as compared with 5 patients in the 8-week group (6%) had mania or hypomania (hazard ratio, 2.28; 95% CI, 0.86 to 6.08), and 15 patients (17%) as compared with 35 patients (40%) had recurrence of depression (hazard ratio, 0.43; 95% CI, 0.25 to 0.75). The incidence of adverse events was similar in the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: In a trial involving patients with bipolar I disorder and a recently remitted depressive episode, adjunctive treatment with escitalopram or bupropion XL that continued for 52 weeks did not show a significant benefit as compared with treatment for 8 weeks in preventing relapse of any mood episode. Psychiatric evaluation relies on subjective symptoms and behavioral observation, which sometimes leads to misdiagnosis. Despite previous efforts to utilize plasma proteins as objective markers, the depletion method is time-consuming. Therefore, this study aimed to enhance previous quantification methods and construct objective discriminative models for major psychiatric disorders using nondepleted plasma. Multiple reaction monitoring-mass spectrometry (MRM-MS) assays for quantifying 453 peptides in nondepleted plasma from 132 individuals [35 major depressive disorder (MDD), 47 bipolar disorder (BD), 23 schizophrenia (SCZ) patients, and 27 healthy controls (HC)] were developed. Pairwise discriminative models for MDD, BD, and SCZ, and a discriminative model between patients and HC were constructed by machine learning approaches. In addition, the proteins from nondepleted plasma-based discriminative models were compared with previously developed depleted plasma-based discriminative models. Discriminative models for MDD versus BD, BD versus SCZ, MDD versus SCZ, and patients versus HC were constructed with 11 to 13 proteins and showed reasonable performances (AUROC = 0.890-0.955). Most of the shared proteins between nondepleted and depleted plasma models had consistent directions of expression levels and were associated with neural signaling, inflammatory, and lipid metabolism pathways. These results suggest that multiprotein markers from nondepleted plasma have a potential role in psychiatric evaluation.

In photosynthesis, four electrons and four protons taken from water in photosystem II (PSII) are used to reduce NAD(P)+ to produce NAD(P)H in photosystem I (PSI), which is the most important reductant to reduce CO2. Despite extensive efforts to mimic photosynthesis, artificial photosynthesis to produce NAD(P)H using water electron and proton sources has yet to be achieved. Herein, we report the photocatalytic reduction of NAD(P)+ to NAD(P)H and its analogues in a molecular model of PSI, which is combined with water oxidation in a molecular model of PSII. Photoirradiation of a toluene/trifluoroethanol (TFE)/borate buffer aqueous solution of hydroquinone derivatives (X-QH2), 9-mesityl-10-methylacridinium ion, cobaloxime, and NAD(P)+ (PSI model) resulted in the quantitative and regioselective formation of NAD(P)H and p-benzoquinone derivatives (X-Q). X-Q was reduced to X-QH2, accompanied by the oxidation of water to dioxygen under the photoirradiation of a toluene/TFE/borate buffer aqueous solution of [(N4Py)FeII]2+ (PSII model). The PSI and PSII models were combined using two glass membranes and two liquid membranes to produce NAD(P)H using water as an electron and proton source with the turnover number (TON) of 54. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to achieve the stoichiometry of photosynthesis, photocatalytic reduction of NAD(P)+ by water to produce NAD(P)H and O2.

We report the macrocyclic ring size-electronic structure-electrophilic reactivity correlation of mononuclear nonheme iron(III)-peroxo complexes bearing N-tetramethylated cyclam analogues (n-TMC), [FeIII(O2)(12-TMC)]+ (1), [FeIII(O2)(13-TMC)]+ (2), and [FeIII(O2)(14-TMC)]+ (3), as a model study of Rieske oxygenases. The Fe(III)-peroxo complexes show the same δ and pseudo-σ bonds between iron and the peroxo ligand. However, the strength of these interactions varies depending on the ring size of the n-TMC ligands; the overall Fe-O bond strength and the strength of the Fe-O2 δ bond increase gradually as the ring size of the n-TMC ligands becomes smaller, such as from 14-TMC to 13-TMC to 12-TMC. MCD spectroscopy plays a key role in assigning the characteristic low-energy δ → δ* LMCT band, which provides direct insight into the strength of the Fe-O2 δ bond and which, in turn, is correlated with the superoxo character of the iron-peroxo group. In oxidation reactions, reactivities of 1-3 toward hydrocarbon C-H bond activation are compared, revealing the reactivity order of 1 > 2 > 3; the [FeIII(O2)(n-TMC)]+ complex with a smaller n-TMC ring size, 12-TMC, is much more reactive than that with a larger n-TMC ring size, 14-TMC. DFT analysis shows that the Fe(III)-peroxo complex is not reactive toward C-H bonds, but it is the end-on Fe(II)-superoxo valence tautomer that is responsible for the observed reactivity. The hydrogen atom abstraction (HAA) reactivity of these intermediates is correlated with the overall donicity of the n-TMC ligand, which modulates the energy of the singly occupied π* superoxo frontier orbital that serves as the electron acceptor in the HAA reaction. The implications of these results for the mechanism of Rieske oxygenases are further discussed.

The reaction of Li[(TAML)CoIII]·3H2O (TAML = tetraamido macrocyclic tetraanionic ligand) with iodosylbenzene at 253 K in acetone in the presence of redox-innocent metal ions (Sc(OTf)3 and Y(OTf)3) or triflic acid affords a blue species 1, which is converted reversibly to a green species 2 upon cooling to 193 K. The electronic structures of 1 and 2 have been determined by combining advanced spectroscopic techniques (X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR), X-ray absorption spectroscopy/extended X-ray absorption fine structure (XAS/EXAFS), and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD)) with ab initio theoretical studies. Complex 1 is best represented as an S = 1/2 [(Sol)(TAML•+)CoIII---OH(LA)]- species (LA = Lewis/Brønsted acid and Sol = solvent), where an S = 1 Co(III) center is antiferromagnetically coupled to S = 1/2 TAML•+, which represents a one-electron oxidized TAML ligand. In contrast, complex 2, also with an S = 1/2 ground state, is found to be multiconfigurational with contributions of both the resonance forms [(H-TAML)CoIV═O(LA)]- and [(H-TAML•+)CoIII═O(LA)]-; H-TAML and H-TAML•+ represent the protonated forms of TAML and TAML•+ ligands, respectively. Thus, the interconversion of 1 and 2 is associated with a LA-associated tautomerization event, whereby H+ shifts from the terminal -OH group to TAML•+ with the concomitant formation of a terminal cobalt-oxo species possessing both singlet (SCo = 0) Co(III) and doublet (SCo = 1/2) Co(IV) characters. The reactivities of 1 and 2 at different temperatures have been investigated in oxygen atom transfer (OAT) and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions to compare the activation enthalpies and entropies of 1 and 2.

All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) are considered promising alternatives to current lithium-ion batteries that employ liquid electrolytes due to their high energy density and enhanced safety. Among various types of solid electrolytes, sulfide-based electrolytes are being actively studied, because they exhibit high ionic conductivity and high ductility, which enable good interfacial contacts in solid electrolytes without sintering at high temperatures. To improve the energy density of the sulfide-based ASSLBs, it is essential to increase the loading of active material in the composite cathode. In this study, the Ni-rich LiNix Coy Mn1-x-y O2 (NCM) materials are explored with different Ni content, particle size, and crystalline form to probe suitable cathode active materials for high-performance ASSLBs with high energy density. The results reveal that single-crystalline LiNi0.82 Co0.10 Mn0.08 O2 material with a small particle size exhibits the best cycling performance in the ASSLB assembled with a high mass loaded cathode (active mass loading: 26 mg cm-2 , areal capacity: 5.0 mAh cm-2 ) in terms of discharge capacity, capacity retention, and rate capability.

A Gram-stain-negative, yellow-pigmented, strictly aerobic, non-flagellated, motile by gliding, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain YSD2104T, was isolated from a coastal sediment sample collected from the southeastern part of the Yellow Sea. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain YSD2104T was closely related to three type strains, Lutimonas vermicola IMCC1616T (97.4 %), Lutimonas saemankumensis SMK-142T (96.9 %), and Lutimonas halocynthiae RSS3-C1T (96.8 %). Strain YSD2104T has a single circular chromosome of 3.54 Mbp with a DNA G+C content of 38.3 mol%. The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain YSD2104T and the three type strains (L. vermicola IMCC1616 T, L. saemankumensis SMK-142T, and L. halocynthiae RSS3-C1T) were 74.0, 86.2 and 73.6 %, and 17.9, 30.3 and 17.8 %, respectively. Growth was observed at 20-30 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 6.5-8.5 (optimum, pH 7.0), and with NaCl concentrations of 1.5-3.5 % (optimum, 2.5 %). The major carotenoid was zeaxanthin, and flexirubin-type pigment was not produced. The major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6. The major fatty acids (>10 %) were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω6c and/or C16 : 1 ω7c), and summed feature 9 (iso-C17 : 1 ω9c and/or 10-methyl C16 : 0). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminophospholipid, two unidentified aminolipids, and eight unidentified lipids. Conclusively, based on this polyphasic approach, we classified strain YSD2104T (=KCTC 102008T=JCM 36287T) as representing a novel species of the genus Lutimonas and proposed the name Lutimonas zeaxanthinifaciens sp. nov.

RESUMO

A novel three-component cyclization carbonylation reaction of iodoarene-tethered propargyl ethers with amine and CO is reported. This palladium-catalyzed cascade reaction undergoes a sequence of oxidative addition, unsaturated bond migration, carbonyl insertion, and nucleophilic attack to deliver the benzofuran skeleton. Both aromatic amines and aliphatic amines could proceed smoothly in this transformation under one atm of CO.

Despite significant improvements in vaccines and chemotherapeutic drugs, pathogenic RNA viruses continue to have a profound impact on the global economy and pose a serious threat to animal and human health through emerging and re-emerging outbreaks of diseases. To overcome the challenge of viral adaptation and evolution, increased vigilance is required. Particularly, antiviral drugs derived from new, natural sources provide an attractive strategy for controlling problematic viral diseases. In this antiviral study, we discovered a previously unknown bacterium, Mameliella sp. M20D2D8, by conducting an antiviral screening of marine microorganisms. An extract from M20D2D8 exhibited antiviral activity with low cytotoxicity and was found to be effective in vitro against multiple influenza virus strains: A/PR8 (IC50 = 2.93 µg/mL, SI = 294.85), A/Phil82 (IC50 = 1.42 µg/mL, SI = 608.38), and B/Yamagata (IC50 = 1.59 µg/mL, SI = 543.33). The antiviral action was found to occur in the post-entry stages of viral replication and to suppress viral replication by inducing apoptosis in infected cells. Moreover, it efficiently suppressed viral genome replication, protein synthesis, and infectivity in MDCK and A549 cells. Our findings highlight the antiviral capabilities of a novel marine bacterium, which could potentially be useful in the development of drugs for controlling viral diseases.

Residents in areas with abandoned mines risk significant exposure to abundant heavy metals in the environment. However, current clinical indicators cannot fully reflect the health changes associated with abandoned mine exposure. The aim of this study was to identify biological changes in the residents of abandoned mine areas via proteomic analysis of their blood. Blood samples were collected from abandoned mine and control areas, and mass spectrometry was used for protein profiling. A total of 138 unique or common proteins that were differentially expressed in low-exposure abandoned mine area (LoAMA) or high-exposure abandoned mine area (HiAMA) compared to non-exposure control area (NEA) were analyzed, and identified 4 clusters based on functional similarity. Among the 10 proteins that showed specific change in LoAMA, 4 proteins(Apolipoprotein M, Apolipoprotein E, Apolipoprotein L1, and Cholesteryl ester transfer protein) were cluded in cluster 1(plasma lipoprotein remodeling), and linked to proteins that showed specific change in protein expression in HiAMA. Therefore, it is suggested that 4 proteins are changed at low exposure to an abandoned mine (or initial exposure), and then at high exposure, changes in various proteins involved in linked plasma lipoprotein remodeling are induced, which might triggered by the 4 proteins. Interestingly, in addition to plasma lipoprotein remodeling, proteins involved in other functional networks were changed in the high exposure group. These were all directly or indirectly linked to the 4 biomarkers(Apolipoprotein M, Apolipoprotein E, Apolipoprotein L1, and Cholesteryl ester transfer protein) that changed during low exposure. This suggests their potential utility in identifying areas impacted by abandoned mines. Especially, proteins involved in lipid metabolism and renal function-related diseases in individuals exposed to heavy metals in abandoned mine areas were correlated. Chronic kidney disease is predominantly instigated by cardiovascular disease and is commonly accompanied by dyslipidemia.

INTRODUCTION: It is important to predict adverse outcomes in febrile children with hematology/oncology diseases. Procalcitonin (PCT) is a promising biomarker for the prediction of infection severity, but further studies have revealed its performance in excluding adverse outcomes of infection. IL-6 and IL-10 were reported to have a close association with those infection outcomes. The aim of the study was to investigate the performance of IL-6 and IL-10 in febrile pediatric hematology/oncology patients with normal PCT. METHODS: This was a retrospective study conducted in a tertiary children's hospital in China over the past ten years. Inflammatory biomarkers, including IL-6, IL-10, PCT and C-reactive protein (CRP), were detected at the onset of infection. Separate analyses were conducted in patients with neutropenia and without neutropenia. RESULTS: In total, 5987 febrile cases were enrolled. For patients with neutropenia, IL-6, IL-10 and PCT were significantly increased in patients with bloodstream infection (BSI), gram-negative bacteremia (GNB) and severe sepsis (SS), but only IL-6 and IL-10 were predictive of GNB and SS. For patients without neutropenia, IL-6, IL-10 and PCT were significantly increased in patients with BSI, GNB and SS, but no biomarkers were predictive of adverse outcomes. All biomarkers failed to exclude patients with fever of unknown origin or upper respiratory infection/bronchitis in patients with neutropenia. CONCLUSIONS: IL-6 and IL-10 could be predictors for GNB and SS in febrile patients with neutropenia and had some association with unfavorable outcomes in febrile patients without neutropenia. All biomarkers failed to exclude patients with fever of unknown origin or upper respiratory infection/bronchitis.

Severe sepsis and septic shock are life-threatening for pediatric hematology and oncology patient receiving chemotherapy. Th1/Th2 cytokines, C-reactive protein (CRP), and procalcitonin (PCT) are all thought to be associated with disease severity. The aim of this study was to prospectively verify the utility of Th1/Th2 cytokines and compare them with PCT and CRP in the prediction of adverse outcomes. Data on patients were collected from January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2020. Blood samples were taken for Th1/Th2 cytokine, CRP, and PCT measurements at the initial onset of infection. Severe infection (SI) was defined as severe sepsis or septic shock. Th1/Th2 cytokine levels were determined by using flow cytometric bead array technology. In total, 7,735 febrile episodes were included in this study. For SI prediction, the AUCs of IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-α were 0.814, 0.805 and 0.624, respectively, while IL-6 and IL-10 had high sensitivity and specificity. IL-6 > 220.85 pg/ml and IL-10 > 29.95 pg/ml had high odds ratio (OR) values of approximately 3.5 in the logistic regression. Within the subgroup analysis, for bloodstream infection (BSI) prediction, the AUCs of IL-10 and TNF-α were 0.757 and 0.694, respectively. For multiorgan dysfunction syndrome (MODS) prediction, the AUC of CRP was 0.606. The AUC of PCT for mortality prediction was 0.620. In conclusion, IL-6 and IL-10 provide good predictive value for the diagnosis of SI. For children with SI, IL-10 and TNF-α are associated with BSI, while CRP and PCT are associated with MODS and death, respectively.

Chronic exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight accelerates skin ageing, which is followed by harsh, thick, dry and loose conditions. One of the most demonstrative symptoms is deep wrinkles induced by skin barrier disruption. Our previous research showed that Phaseolus angularis seed extract (PASE) effectively inhibits skin ageing through UVB protection in HaCaT cells by suppressing skin damage. However, its efficacy has not been evaluated in clinical trials so far. PASE cream's effectiveness was initially tested on the artificial skin model, revealing an increase in filaggrin and defence against skin damage. Based on these results, in this single-centred, randomized, double-blind study, we investigated the anti-ageing effect of PASE in human eye wrinkle areas. For these 21 healthy adult women aged 30 to 59, a PASE cream was applied to the right eye wrinkle area and a placebo to the left eye wrinkle area twice a day (morning and evening) for 12 weeks. The change in thick, deep crease wrinkles around the eyes was confirmed by visual evaluation, skin measurements and a questionnaire. As a result, the surface roughness (R1), maximum roughness (R2), average roughness (R3), smoothness depth (R4) and arithmetic mean roughness (R5) values in the group using the PASE cream all decreased. Particularly, R1, R4 and R5 significantly decreased by 18.1%, 18.6% and 25.0%, respectively. Subjects who applied PASE cream also experienced an improvement in skin moisture nearly twice the time compared to the placebo group. In addition, no participants reported side effects. Our study showed that PASE cream led to clinically significant levels of wrinkle improvement. In conclusion, as PASE is a natural, safe food with no side effects, it can be a good resource for natural anti-wrinkle functional cosmetics in the future.

La présence de rides profondes induites par la rupture de la barrière cutanée en constitue l'un des symptômes les plus manifestes. Lors d'études précédentes, nous nous sommes rendu compte que l'extrait de graines de Phaseolus angularis (PASE) inhibait efficacement le vieillissement de la peau en assurant la protection anti­UVB des cellules HaCaT grâce à la suppression des lésions cutanées. Cependant, son efficacité n'a pas été évaluée lors d'essais cliniques à ce jour. L'efficacité de la crème PASE a d'abord été testée sur le modèle de peau artificielle, sur laquelle elle a fait augmenter les taux de filaggrine et assuré une défense contre les lésions cutanées. Sur la base de ces résultats, dans cette étude unicentrique, randomisée et en double aveugle, nous avons étudié l'effet anti­âge de la PASE chez l'humain au niveau des rides proches de l'œil. Pour ces 21 femmes adultes en bonne santé âgées de 30 à 59 ans, une crème PASE a été appliquée sur la zone de rides de l'œil droit et un placebo sur la zone de rides de l'œil gauche deux fois par jour (matin et soir) pendant 12 semaines. La modification des rides profondes et épaisses autour des yeux a été confirmée par une évaluation visuelle, des mesures cutanées et un questionnaire. Il a été découvert que les valeurs de rugosité de surface (R1), de rugosité maximale (R2), de rugosité moyenne (R3), de profondeur de douceur (R4) et de moyenne arithmétique (R5) dans le groupe à l'aide de la crème PASE avaient toutes diminué. En particulier, R1, R4 et R5 ont significativement diminué de 18,1 %, de 18,6 % et de 25,0 %, respectivement. Les patients qui ont appliqué la crème PASE ont également présenté une amélioration de l'hydratation de la peau presque deux fois supérieure à celle du groupe placebo. En outre, aucun participant n'a signalé d'effets secondaires. Notre étude a montré que la crème PASE entraînait des niveaux cliniquement significatifs d'amélioration des rides. En conclusion, comme le PASE est un aliment naturel, sûr et dépourvu d'effets secondaires, elle peut constituer une bonne ressource pour les cosmétiques fonctionnels naturels antirides à l'avenir.

The development of catalytic systems capable of oxygenating unactivated C-H bonds with excellent site-selectivity and functional group tolerance under mild conditions remains a challenge. Inspired by the secondary coordination sphere (SCS) hydrogen bonding in metallooxygenases, reported herein is an SCS solvent hydrogen bonding strategy that employs 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) as a strong hydrogen bond donor solvent to enable remote C-H hydroxylation in the presence of basic aza-heteroaromatic rings with a low loading of a readily available and inexpensive manganese complex as a catalyst and hydrogen peroxide as a terminal oxidant. We demonstrate that this strategy represents a promising compliment to the current state-of-the-art protection approaches that rely on precomplexation with strong Lewis and/or Brønsted acids. Mechanistic studies with experimental and theoretical approaches reveal the existence of a strong hydrogen bonding between the nitrogen-containing substrate and HFIP, which prevents the catalyst deactivation by nitrogen binding and deactivates the basic nitrogen atom toward oxygen atom transfer and the α-C-H bonds adjacent to the nitrogen center toward H-atom abstraction. Moreover, the hydrogen bonding exerted by HFIP has also been demonstrated not only to facilitate the O-O bond heterolytic cleavage of a putative MnIII-OOH precursor to generate MnV(O)(OC(O)CH2Br) as an active oxidant but also to affect the stability and the activity of MnV(O)(OC(O)CH2Br).

The nature of reactive intermediates and the mechanism of the cis-dihydroxylation of arenes and olefins by Rieske dioxygenases and synthetic nonheme iron catalysts have been the topic of intense research over the past several decades. In this study, we report that a spectroscopically well characterized mononuclear nonheme iron(III)-peroxo complex reacts with olefins and naphthalene derivatives, yielding iron(III) cycloadducts that are isolated and characterized structurally and spectroscopically. Kinetics and product analysis reveal that the nonheme iron(III)-peroxo complex is a nucleophile that reacts with olefins and naphthalenes to yield cis-diol products. The present study reports the first example of the cis-dihydroxylation of substrates by a nonheme iron(III)-peroxo complex that yields cis-diol products.

The practical catalytic enantioselective cis-dihydroxylation of olefins that utilize earth-abundant first-row transition metal catalysts under environmentally friendly conditions is an important yet challenging task. Inspired by the cis-dihydroxylation reactions catalyzed by Rieske dioxygenases and non-heme iron models, we report the biologically inspired cis-dihydroxylation catalysis that employs an inexpensive and readily available mononuclear non-heme manganese complex bearing a tetradentate nitrogen-donor ligand and aqueous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and potassium peroxymonosulfate (KHSO5) as terminal oxidants. A wide range of olefins are efficiently oxidized to enantioenriched cis-diols in practically useful yields with excellent cis-dihydroxylation selectivity and enantioselectivity (up to 99% ee). Mechanistic studies, such as isotopically 18O-labeled water experiments, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations support that a manganese(V)-oxo-hydroxo (HO-MnV═O) species, which is formed via the water-assisted heterolytic O-O bond cleavage of putative manganese(III)-hydroperoxide and manganese(III)-peroxysulfate precursors, is the active oxidant that effects the cis-dihydroxylation of olefins; this is reminiscent of the frequently postulated iron(V)-oxo-hydroxo (HO-FeV═O) species in the catalytic arene and alkene cis-dihydroxylation reactions by Rieske dioxygenases and synthetic non-heme iron models. Further, DFT calculations for the mechanism of the HO-MnV═O-mediated enantioselective cis-dihydroxylation of olefins reveal that the first oxo attack step controls the enantioselectivity, which exhibits a high preference for cis-dihydroxylation over epoxidation. In this study, we are able to replicate both the catalytic function and the key chemical principles of Rieske dioxygenases in mononuclear non-heme manganese-catalyzed enantioselective cis-dihydroxylation of olefins.

A high-valent manganese(IV)-hydroxo porphyrin π-cation radical complex, [Mn(IV)(OH)(Porp+•)(X)]+, was synthesized and characterized spectroscopically. The Mn porphyrin intermediate was highly reactive in alkane hydroxylation and oxygen atom transfer reactions. More importantly, the Mn porphyrin intermediate reacted with water at a fast rate, resulting in the dioxygen evolution. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first manganese Cpd I model compound bearing a porphyrin π-cation radical ligand with a high reactivity in oxidation reactions, including water oxidation.

We report the synthesis and characterization of a mononuclear nonheme cobalt(III)-imidyl complex, [Co(NTs)(TQA)(OTf)]+ (1), with an S = 3/2 spin state that is capable of facilitating exogenous substrate modifications. Complex 1 was generated from the reaction of CoII(TQA)(OTf)2 with PhINTs at -20 °C. A flow setup with ESI-MS detection was used to explore the kinetics of the formation, stability, and degradation pathway of 1 in solution by treating the Co(II) precursor with PhINTs. Co K-edge XAS data revealed a distinct shift in the Co K-edge compared to the Co(II) precursor, in agreement with the formation of a Co(III) intermediate. The unusual S = 3/2 spin state was proposed based on EPR, DFT, and CASSCF calculations and Co Kß XES results. Co K-edge XAS and IR photodissociation (IRPD) spectroscopies demonstrate that 1 is a six-coordinate species, and IRPD and resonance Raman spectroscopies are consistent with 1 being exclusively the isomer with the NT ligand occupying the vacant site trans to the TQA aliphatic amine nitrogen atom. Electronic structure calculations (broken symmetry DFT and CASSCF/NEVPT2) demonstrate an S = 3/2 oxidation state resulting from the strong antiferromagnetic coupling of an •NTs spin to the high-spin S = 2 Co(III) center. Reactivity studies of 1 with PPh3 derivatives revealed its electrophilic characteristic in the nitrene-transfer reaction. While the activation of C-H bonds by 1 was proved to be kinetically challenging, 1 could oxidize weak O-H and N-H bonds. Complex 1 is, therefore, a rare example of a Co(III)-imidyl complex capable of exogenous substrate transformations.

29Si silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) are promising magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) probes that possess advantageous properties for in vivo applications, including suitable biocompatibility, tailorable properties, and high water dispersibility. Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) is used to enhance 29Si MR signals via enhanced nuclear spin alignment; to date, there has been limited success employing DNP for SiO2 NPs due to the lack of endogenous electronic defects that are required for the process. To create opportunities for SiO2-based 29Si MRI probes, we synthesized variously featured SiO2 NPs with selective 29Si isotope enrichment on homogeneous and core@shell structures (shell thickness: 10 nm, core size: 40 nm), and identified the critical factors for optimal DNP signal enhancement as well as the effective hyperpolarization depth when using an exogenous radical. Based on the synthetic design, this critical factor is the proportion of 29Si in the shell layer regardless of core enrichment. Furthermore, the effective depth of hyperpolarization is less than 10 nm between the surface and core, which demonstrates an approximately 40% elongated diffusion length for the shell-enriched NPs compared to the natural abundance NPs. This improved regulation of surface properties facilitates the development of isotopically enriched SiO2 NPs as hyperpolarized contrast agents for in vivo MRI.

Wearable ionoskins are one of the representative examples of the many useful applications offered by deformable stimuli-responsive sensory platforms. Herein, ionotronic thermo-mechano-multimodal response sensors are proposed, which can independently detect changes in temperature and mechanical stimuli without crosstalk. For this purpose, mechanically robust, thermo-responsive ion gels composed of poly(styrene-ran-n-butyl methacrylate) (PS-r-PnBMA, copolymer gelator) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide ([BMI][TFSI], ionic liquid) are prepared. The optical transmittance change arising from the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) phenomenon between PnBMA and [BMI][TFSI] is exploited to track the external temperature, creating a new concept of the temperature coefficient of transmittance (TCT). The TCT of this system (-11.5% °C-1 ) is observed to be more sensitive to temperature fluctuations than the conventional metric of temperature coefficient of resistance. The tailoring molecular characteristics of gelators selectively improved the mechanical robustness of the gel, providing an additional application opportunity for strain sensors. This functional sensory platform, which is attached to a robot finger, can successfully detect thermal and mechanical environmental changes through variations in the optical (transmittance) and electrical (resistance) properties of the ion gel, respectively, indicating the high practicality of on-skin multimodal wearable sensors.
