Vertical beam size measurements were carried out at Beijing Electron-Positron Collider II (BEPCII) using a phase grating and an absorption grating based on the Talbot effect. The transverse coherence of synchrotron radiation is closely related to beam size. Due to the partial coherence of the synchrotron radiation source, the coherence length can be calculated by measuring the visibility decay of interferograms recorded at different distances behind the gratings. A vertical beam size of 68.19 ± 2 µm was obtained based on the relationship between the coherence length and beam size at the 3W1 beamline of BEPCII. A comparison of the vertical emittance derived from the grating Talbot method and the synchrotron radiation visible light interferometer method was presented. The vertical emittances from the two methods are 1.41 nm rad and 1.40 nm rad, respectively. The 0.1% difference indicates that the grating Talbot method for beam size measurement is reliable. This technique has great potential for small beam size measurement of fourth-generation synchrotron radiation light sources, considering its small diffraction limitation and simple experimental setups.

Removal of steroid hormones from aqueous environment is of prevailing concern because of their adverse impact on organisms. Using biochar derived from biomass as adsorbent to remove pollutants has become more popular due to its low cost, effectiveness, and sustainability. This study evaluated the feasibility of applying corn straw biochar (CSB) and dewatered sludge biochar (DSB) to reduce 17ß-estradiol (E2) from aquatic solutions by adsorption. The experimental results showed that the adsorption kinetics and isotherm behavior of E2 on the two biochars were well described by the pseudo-second-order (R2 > 0.93) and Langmuir models (R2 > 0.97). CSB has higher E2 adsorption capacity than DSB, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 99.8 mg/g obtained from Langmuir model at 298 K, which can be attributed to the higher surface area, porosity, and hydrophobicity of this adsorbent. Higher pH levels (>10.2) decreased the adsorption capacities of biochar for E2, while the ionic strength did not significantly affect the adsorption process. The regeneration ability of CSB was slightly better than that of DSB. The possible adsorption mechanism for E2 on biochar is suggested as π−π interactions, H−bonding, and micropores filling. These results indicated that CSB has more potential and application value than DSB on reducing E2 from aqueous solutions when considering economy and removal performance.

A sedimentary record of the 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollutants from Dongping Lake, north China, is presented in this study. The influence of regional energy structure changes for 2-6-ring PAHs was investigated, in order to assess their sources and the impact of socioeconomic developments on the observed changes in concentration over time. The concentration of the ΣPAH16 ranged from 77.6 to 628.0 ng/g. Prior to the 1970s, the relatively low concentration of ΣPAH16 and the average presence of 44.4% 2,3-ring PAHs indicated that pyrogenic combustion from grass, wood, and coal was the main source of PAHs. The rapid increase in the concentration of 2,3-ring PAHs between the 1970s and 2006 was attributed to the growth of the urban population and the coal consumption, following the implementation of the Reform and Open Policy in 1978. The source apportionment, which was assessed using a positive matrix factorization model, revealed that coal combustion was the most important regional source of PAHs pollution (>51.0%). The PAHs were mainly transported to the site from the surrounding regions by atmospheric deposition rather than direct discharge.

Urban populations, especially women, are vunerable to exposure to airborne pollution, particularly inhalable particulates (PM10). Thus, more accurate measurement of PM10 levels and evaluating their health effects is critical for guiding policy to improve human health. Previous studies obtained personal PM10 with time-weighted average by air filter-based sampling (AFS), which ignores individual differences and behavioral patterns. Here, we used nasal filters instead of AFS to obtain actual inhaled PM10 under short-term exposure for urban dwelling women during a severe haze event in Beijing in 2016. The levels of six heavy metals such as As, Cd, Ni, Cr, Pb, and Co in PM10 were investigated, and carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks evaluated based on an adjusted US EPA health risk assessment model. The health endpoints for urban dwelling women were further assessed through an exposure-reponse model. We found that the hourly inhaled dose of PM10 obtained through the nasal filter was about 2.5-17.6 times that obtained by AFS, which also resulted in 4.41-11.30 times more morbidity than estimated by AFS (p < 0.05). Proximity to traffic emissions resulted in greater exposure to particulate matter (>18.8 µg/kg·h) and heavy metals (>2.2 ng/kg·h), and these populations are therefore at greatest risk of developing non-cancer (HI = 4.16) and cancer (Rt = 7.8 × 10-3) related morbities.

Artificial sweeteners (ASs) are of growing concern as an emerging contaminant. In the study, the seasonal occurrence, removal and mass load of six ASs in sewage, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sludge were investigated throughout the treatment process of the largest water reclamation plant in China. The highest ASs concentrations in the influent (13.0 µg/L), effluent (2.22 µg/L), SPM (4.48 µg/g) and sludge (0.15 µg/g) were observed in the dry season, which were 1.24- to 5.0-fold higher than in the normal season and 1.06- to 37.5-fold higher than the flood season. Following treatment, ASs concentrations decreased by 24.3 %, 51.7 % and 5.1 % (on average) in primary, secondary and reclaimed processes, respectively. Among the investigated ASs, acesulfame (93.1 %) and cyclamate (98.4 %) were removed most efficiently, with removal occurring mainly in secondary processes, while sucralose exhibited the lowest removal efficiency (38.7 %). Seasonal characteristics affect the consumption of ASs, which subsequently changes the input and discharge ASs loads of STPs. The maximum mass load of ASs occurred in the dry season, ranging from 0.002 (neotame) to 1.33 mg/d/person (cyclamate), while the maximum emission load occurred in the flood season, ranging from 0.003 (neotame) to 0.83 mg/d/person (sucralose). The mass and emission load of ASs in Beijing is significantly lower than in European or the United States, due to Beijing having low per capita consumption of ASs (5.50 mg/d/person). The highest ASs risk in the receiving water occurred in the flood season due to the input of other pollution sources by rainfall runoff. Meanwhile, attention should be paid to the risk of receiving water close to the STP outlet in the dry seasons for the highest ASs concentration in the STP effluent in the season. The present study provides important guidance on controlling the input and reducing the emission of ASs in different seasons.
