Little evidence demonstrated the effects of nitric oxide (NO) hydrogel with adipocytes in vivo. We aimed to investigate the effects of adiponectin (ADPN) and CCR2 antagonist on cardiac functions and macrophage phenotypes after myocardial infarction (MI) using chitosan caged nitric oxide donor (CSNO) patch with adipocytes. 3T3-L1 cell line was induced to adipocytes and ADPN expression was knocked down. CSNO was synthesized and patch was constructed. MI model was constructed and patch was placed on the infarcted area. ADPN knockdown adipocytes or control was incubated with CSNO patch, and CCR2 antagonist was also used to investigate the ADPN effects on myocardial injury after infarction. On day 7 after operation, cardiac functions of the mice using CSNO with adipocytes or ADPN knockdown adipocytes improved more than in mice only using CSNO for treatment. Lymphangiogenesis increased much more in the MI mice using CSNO with adipocytes. After treating with CCR2 antagonist, Connexin43+ CD206+ cells and ZO-1+ CD206+ cells increased, suggesting that CCR2 antagonist promoted M2 polarization after MI. Besides, CCR2 antagonist promoted ADPN expression in adipocytes and cardiomyocytes. ELISA was also used and CKMB expression was much lower than other groups at 3 days after operation. On day 7 after operation, the VEGF and TGFß expressions were high in the adipocytes CSNO group, illustrating that higher ADPN led to better treatment. In all, CCR2 antagonist enhanced the ADPN effects on macrophage M2 polarization and cardiac functions. The combination used in border zone and infarcted areas may help improve patients' prognosis in surgery, such as CABG.

Rare base-pairs consists of guanine (G) paired with rare bases, such as 5-methylcytosine (5-meCyt), 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5-hmCyt), 5-carboxylcytosine (5-caCyt), and 5-formylcytosine (5-fCyt), have become the focus of epigenetic research because they can be used as markers to detect some chronic diseases and cancers. However, the correlation detection of these rare base-pairs is limited, which in turn limits the development of diagnostic tests and devices. Herein, the interaction of rare base-pairs adsorbed on pure and B/N-doped γ-graphyne (γ-GY) nanosheets was explored using the density functional theory. The calculated adsorption energy showed that the system of rare base-pairs on B-doped γ-GY is more stable than that on pure γ-GY or N-doped γ-GY. Translocation time values indicate that rare base-pairs can be successfully distinguished as the difference in their translocation times is very large for pure and B/N-doped γ-GY nanosheets. Meanwhile, sensing response values illustrated that pure and B-doped γ-GY are the best for G-5-hmCyt adsorption, while the N-doped γ-GY is the best for G-Cyt adsorption. The findings indicate that translocation times and sensing response can be used as detection indexes for pure and B/N doped γ-GY, which will provide a new way for experimental scientists to develop the biosensor components.

Pregnant women are a special group that is sensitive to adverse external stimuli, causing metabolic abnormalities and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Microplastics (MPs), an environmental pollutant widely used in various fields, can induce a variety of toxic responses in mammals. Recent studies verified an association between MPs and metabolic disorders. Our research built a gestational mouse model in which polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) of 1 µm size were consumed at concentrations of 0.1, 1, and 10 mg/L during pregnancy. Results indicated that PS-MPs induced placental malfunction and fetal growth retardation. Significant glucose disorders, decreased liver function, hepatic inflammation, and oxidative stress were also observed after PS-MPs exposure. The hepatic SIRT1/IRS1/PI3K pathway was inhibited in the 10 mg/L PS-MPs exposure group. Our study found that PS-MPs activated inflammatory response and oxidative stress by increasing hepatic lipopolysaccharide (LPS) that inhibited the hepatic SIRT1/IRS1/PI3K pathway, ultimately leading to insulin resistance, glucose metabolism disorders, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study provides a basis for preventing environment-related gestational diabetes and concomitant adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Layered titania (L-TiO2 ) holds great potential for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high specific capacity. Synthesizing L-TiO2 functional materials for high-capacity and long cyclability battery remains challenging due to the unstable and poor conductivity of bare L-TiO2 . In nature, plant growth can stabilize land by preventing sands from dispersing following desertification. Inspired by nature's "sand-fixation model," Al3+ "seeds" are in situ grown on layered Ti3 C2 Tx "land." Subsequently, NH2 -MIL-101(Al) "plants" with Al as metal nodes are grown on the Ti3 C2 Tx "land" by self-assembly. After annealing and etching processes (similar to desertification), NH2 -MIL-101(Al) is transformed into interconnected N/O-doped carbon (MOF-NOC), which not only acts as a plant-like function to prevent the pulverization of L-TiO2 transformed from Ti3 C2 Tx but also improves the conductivity and stability of MOF-NOC@L-TiO2 . Al species are selected as seeds to improve interfacial compatibility and form intimate interface heterojunction. Systematic ex situ analysis discloses that the ions storage mechanism can be endowed by mixed contribution of non-Faradaic and Faradaic capacitance. Consequently, the MOF-NOC@L-TiO2 electrodes exhibit high interfacial capacitive charge storage and outstanding cycling performance. The interface engineering strategy inspired by "sand-fixation model" provides a reference for designing stable layered composites.

BACKGROUND: The kidney is particularly vulnerable to toxins due to its abundant blood supply, active tubular reabsorption, and medullary interstitial concentration. Currently, calcium phosphate-induced and calcium oxalate-induced nephropathies are the most common crystalline nephropathies. Hyperoxaluria may lead to kidney stones and progressive kidney disease due to calcium oxalate deposition leading to oxalate nephropathy. Hyperoxaluria can be primary or secondary. Primary hyperoxaluria is an autosomal recessive disease that usually develops in childhood, whereas secondary hyperoxaluria is observed following excessive oxalate intake or reduced excretion, with no difference in age of onset. Oxalate nephropathy may be overlooked, and the diagnosis is often delayed or missed owning to the physician's inadequate awareness of its etiology and pathogenesis. Herein, we discuss the pathogenesis of hyperoxaluria with two case reports, and our report may be helpful to make appropriate treatment plans in clinical settings in the future. CASE PRESENTATION: We report two cases of acute kidney injury, which were considered to be due to oxalate nephropathy in the setting of purslane (portulaca oleracea) ingestion. The two patients were elderly and presented with oliguria, nausea, vomiting, and clinical manifestations of acute kidney injury requiring renal replacement therapy. One patient underwent an ultrasound-guided renal biopsy, which showed acute tubulointerstitial injury and partial tubular oxalate deposition. Both patients underwent hemodialysis and were discharged following improvement in creatinine levels. CONCLUSIONS: Our report illustrates two cases of acute oxalate nephropathy in the setting of high dietary consumption of purslane. If a renal biopsy shows calcium oxalate crystals and acute tubular injury, oxalate nephropathy should be considered and the secondary causes of hyperoxaluria should be eliminated.

RESUMO

With the development of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), major breakthroughs have been made in this field of study. However, the research fields still need to be continuously expanded to meet the needs of patients. The concept of precision therapy is widely applied in the field of nursing. Under the concept of ERAS, practical studies of applying precision nursing for the perioperative period have already been conducted, exploring such issues as precision nursing assessment, precision nursing intervention design, precision risk prediction model, and information technology to assist precision nursing practice. Research findings have preliminarily validated the safety and effectiveness of applying precision nursing for ERAS in the perioperative period. Herein, we reviewed the reported findings of relevant research published in recent years and identified the following problems in the implementation of precision nursing under the ERAS concept, a lack of implementation standards, challenges concerning the the role of nurses, a lack of high-quality research evidence in the existing literature, and a relevant big data processing platform that China does not have and therefore cannot carry out data sharing, integration, mining, and utilization. We also made suggestions for effective improvement and discussed research prospects. In the future, multidisciplinary collaboration, translational medical research, and the development of various innovative tools are to be strengthened to help improve the quality and effectiveness of nursing care. We hope to provide reference for improving the scientific and targeted implementation of precision nursing for ERAS in the perioperative period.

Several cryptic avian species have been validated by recent integrative taxonomic efforts in the Sino-Himalayan mountains, indicating that avian diversity in this global biodiversity hotspot may be underestimated. In the present study, we investigated species limits in the genus Tarsiger, the bush robins, a group of montane forest specialists with high species richness in the Sino-Himalayan region. Based on comprehensive sampling of all 11 subspecies of the six currently recognized species, we applied an integrative taxonomic approach by combining multilocus, acoustic, plumage and morphometric analyses. Our results reveal that the isolated north-central Chinese populations of Tarsiger cyanurus, described as the subspecies albocoeruleus but usually considered invalid, is distinctive in genetics and vocalisation, but only marginally differentiated in morphology. We also found the Taiwan endemic T. indicus formosanus to be distinctive in genetics, song and morphology from T. i. indicus and T. i. yunnanensis of the Sino-Himalayan mountains. Moreover, Bayesian species delimitation using BPP suggests that both albocoeruleus and formosanus merit full species status. We propose their treatment as 'Qilian Bluetail' T. albocoeruleus and 'Taiwan Bush Robin' T. formosanus, respectively.

Lentinula edodes is one of the most important commercially cultivated edible mushrooms. It is well known that gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) supplementation in sawdust medium increases the yield of L. edodes, while the physiological mechanisms remain unclear. Our previous study showed that the acidification of the medium to pH 3.5-4.0 was essential for the growth of L. edodes. In this study, it was found that the oxalic acid excreted by L. edodes was responsible for the acidification of the medium. The biosynthesis of oxalic acid was regulated by the ambient pH and buffer capacity of the medium. To acidify the sawdust medium, the concentrations of total and soluble oxalate were 51.1 mmol/kg and 10.8 mmol/kg, respectively. However, when the concentration of soluble oxalate was 8.0 mmol/kg, the mycelial growth rate decreased by 29% compared with the control. Soluble oxalate was toxic to L. edodes, while soluble sulfate was nontoxic. CaSO4 reacted with soluble oxalate to form nontoxic insoluble CaC2O4 and the strong acid H2SO4. When the CaSO4 supplemented in sawdust medium was more than 25 mmol/kg, the soluble oxalate decreased to less than 1 mmol/kg, and the mycelial growth rate increased by 32% compared with the control. In conclusion, gypsum improved the growth and yield by relieving the toxicity of oxalate and facilitating the acidification of sawdust medium. KEY POINTS: • L. edodes excretes oxalic acid to acidify the ambient environment for growth. • Soluble oxalate is toxic to L. edodes. • Gypsum increases growth by reacting with oxalate to relieve its toxicity.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate whether there was a significant relationship between anemia and the risk for mortality among coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients by a quantitative meta-analysis based on the adjusted effect estimates. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in electronic databases to identify all published literature. A random-effects meta-analysis model was used to estimate the pooled effect size and 95% confidence interval (CI). Heterogeneity test, Begg's test, subgroup analysis and meta-regression were performed. RESULTS: Twenty-three articles with 573,928 COVID-19 patients were included in the quantitative meta-analysis. There was a significant association between anemia and an elevated risk of COVID-19 mortality (pooled effect size = 1.47, 95% CI [1.30-1.67]). We observed this significant association in the further subgroup analyses by age, proportion of males, sample size, study design, region and setting. Sensitivity analysis exhibited that our results were reliable. Begg's test showed that there was no publication bias. Meta-regression indicated that the tested variables might not be the source of heterogeneity. CONCLUSION: Our meta-analysis based on risk factors-adjusted effect estimates indicated that anemia was independently associated with a significantly elevated risk for mortality among COVID-19 patients.

Background: To explore clinical features and prognostic value of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), interleukin (IL) 8, IL-10, phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase catalytic subunit alpha (PIK3CA), and receptor-interacting protein-2 (RIP2) in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Methods: A total of 68 DLBCL patients admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of Hebei Engineering University from January 2017 to June 2021 were included in this retrospective analysis. Serum VEGF was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, serum IL-8 and IL-10 were detected by chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay, and expression of PIK3CA and RIP2 in tumors was detected by immunohistochemistry. The correlation between clinical features of DLBCL and tumor-related index were analyzed. Cox regression was conducted to explore risk factors and hazard ratio. Results: The serum level or expressions of VEGF, IL-8, IL-10, and RIP2 were significantly elevated with the increase of Ann Arbor Stage, International Prognostic Index (IPI) scores, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) scores, serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) level, and the number of extranodal sites (all P < 0.05). Beside, these serum indexes were significantly higher in patients with the presence of extranodal involvement and germinal center B-cell (GCB), but significantly lower in patients with the presence of bone marrow involvement (all P < 0.05). Cox regression analysis for overall survival revealed that high expression of VEGF, high level of serum IL-8, serum IL-10, and RIP2, Ann Arbor Stage (III-IV), number of extranodal sites (>1), serum LDH level (≥245 U/L), IPI scores (3-5), ECOG scores (≥2), and bone marrow involvement were independent risk factors for the prognosis of DLBCL patients (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: The serum levels of VEGF, IL-8, and IL-10, as well as the expression of RIP2 and PIK3CA in tumor tissues, were highly correlated to clinical features of DLBCL, and high expression level of these indexes may have adverse effects for the prognosis of DLBCL patients.

BACKGROUND: The maize husk consists of numerous leafy layers and plays vital roles in protecting the ear from pathogen infection and dehydration. Teosinte, the wild ancestor of maize, has about three layers of small husk outer covering the ear. Although several quantitative trait loci (QTL) underlying husk morphology variation have been reported, the genetic basis of husk traits between teosinte and maize remains unclear. RESULTS: A linkage population including 191 BC2F8 inbred lines generated from the maize line Mo17 and the teosinte line X26-4 was used to identify QTL associated with three husk traits: i.e., husk length (HL), husk width (HW) and the number of husk layers (HN). The best linear unbiased predictor (BLUP) depicted wide phenotypic variation and high heritability of all three traits. The HL exhibited greater correlation with HW than HN. A total of 4 QTLs were identified including 1, 1, 2, which are associated with HL, HW and HN, respectively. The proportion of phenotypic variation explained by these QTLs was 9.6, 8.9 and 8.1% for HL, HN and HW, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The QTLs identified in this study will pave a path to explore candidate genes regulating husk growth and development, and benefit the molecular breeding program based on molecular marker-assisted selection to cultivate maize varieties with an ideal husk morphology.

RESUMO

An N-bromosuccinimide-mediated cascade reaction involving the cyclization/oxygen-migration/ring-contraction process of 3-(ß, ß-diaryl) indolylethanol was disclosed. A variety of spiro 3,3'-cyclopropyl oxindole derivatives were efficiently synthesized in good yields under mild reaction conditions. A possible mechanism was suggested based on intermediate isolation and computational studies.

BACKGROUND: Coronary flow velocity reserve (CFVR) can provide useful quantitative information on the functional status of coronary artery circulation, and an impaired CFVR (< 2.0) was associated with a significant increase in the occurrence of cardiac events. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death in homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH), but the relationship between impaired CFVR and outcome in HoFH has never been discussed before METHODS: To explore the long-term prognostic value of CFVR in patients with HoFH, 39 HoFH patients with CFVR data (mean age with 16.7 years) were enrolled from the Genetic and Imaging of Familial Hypercholesterolemia in Han Nationality Study. All patients were divided into impaired CFVR (CFVR < 2.0, n = 17) and preserved CFVR (CFVR≥2.0, n = 22) group. Follow-up was performed until a major adverse cardiac event (MACE) occurred or up to June 30, 2020 RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 89 months, 16 events were registered, 12 of which were occurred in the impaired CFVR group and four occurred in the preserved CFVR group. The event-free survival rate of impaired CFVR group was significantly lower than that in the preserved CFVR group (29.4% vs 81.8%, P < .001), and CFVR < 2.0 was independently associated with prognosis before and after adjustment for related risk factors (HR 5.197, 95% CI 1.669 to 16.178, P = .004 and HR 5.488, 95% CI 1.470 to 20.496, P = .011, respectively) CONCLUSIONS: an impaired CFVR predicts a worse outcome in HoFH. CFVR shows an independent value in the prediction of long-term outcome in HoFH.

BACKGROUND: Strength recovery of injured knee is an important parameter for patients who want to return to sport after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Comparison of muscle strength between anatomical and non-anatomical ACLR has not been reported. PURPOSE: To evaluate the difference between anatomical and non-anatomical single-bundle ACLR in hamstring and quadriceps strength and clinical outcomes. METHODS: Patients received unilateral primary single-bundle hamstring ACLR between January 2017 to January 2018 were recruited in this study. Patients were divided into anatomical reconstruction group (AR group) and non-anatomical reconstruction group (NAR group) according to femoral tunnel aperture position. The hamstring and quadriceps isokinetic strength including peak extension torque, peak flexion torque and H/Q ratio were measured at an angular velocity of 180°/s and 60°/s using an isokinetic dynamometer. The isometric extension and flexion torques were also measured. Hamstring and quadriceps strength were measured preoperatively and at 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery. Knee stability including Lachman test, pivot-shift test, and KT-1000 measurement and subjective knee function including International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) and Lysholm scores were evaluated during the follow-up. RESULTS: Seventy-two patients with an average follow-up of 30.4 months (range, 24-35 months) were included in this study. Thirty-three were in AR group and 39 in NAR group. The peak knee flexion torque was significant higher in AR group at 180°/s and 60°/s (P < 0.05 for both velocity) at 6 months postoperatively and showed no difference between the two groups at 12 months postoperatively. The isometric knee extension torque was significant higher in AR group at 6 months postoperatively (P < 0.05) and showed no difference between the two groups at 12 months postoperatively. No significant differences between AR group and NAR group were found regarding knee stability and subjective knee function evaluations at follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with non-anatomical ACLR, anatomical ACLR showed a better recovery of hamstring and quadriceps strength at 6 months postoperatively. However, the discrepancy on hamstring and quadriceps strength between the two groups vanished at 1 year postoperatively.

BACKGROUND: Citrus aurantium L. (Aurantii fructus) is a multi-purpose citrus fruit with high medicinal and nutritional value, but currently there are no data that can be used to investigate the appropriate harvest time to obtain high-quality citrus bioactive ingredients from it. RESULTS: Phytochemicals and the levels of the main bioactive ingredients were investigated by ultra high performance liquid chromatography electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-Q-TOF/MS). The flavanone, polymethoxyflavone, coumarin, synephrine, and limonin content in the citrus fruit was analyzed at different harvest periods, and significant differences, ranging from 0.03 ± 0.01 to 116.26 ± 40.20 g kg-1 (DW), were shown. These compounds were present in higher amounts in June and then decreased gradually, while the biomass accumulation of most of them showed an increasing tendency around harvest time. The H2 O2 -induced RIN-m5F cells model was employed to evaluate their antioxidant capacity. Citrus fruit harvested from June 11 to July 7 possessed an excellent antioxidant capacity by inhibiting the intensity of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) (P < 0.01) and improving superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH) activity (P < 0.01). The chemical composition and antioxidant capacity of citrus leaves, stems, and roots were also evaluated, and these showed great variation compared with other citrus fruits. Multivariate statistical analysis indicated that harvesting time was related closely to the phytochemical contents and antioxidant capacity. CONCLUSION: Citrus fruit can be appropriately harvested from June to early July when the levels of bioactive ingredients and antioxidant activity reach higher values. This research provides practical information for producing high-quality citrus products. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

KEY MESSAGE: RNAi-based genetically modified maize resistant to Monolepta hieroglyphica (Motschulsky) was demonstrated with negligible transcriptome and metabolome alterations compared to its unmodified equivalent. As one of the most prevalent insect pests afflicting various crops, Monolepta hieroglyphica (Motschulsky) causes severe loss of agricultural and economic productivity for many years in China. In an effort to reduce damages, in this study, an RNA interference (RNAi)-based genetically modified (GM) maize was developed. It was engineered to produce MhSnf7 double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs), which can suppress the Snf7 gene expression and then lead M. hieroglyphica to death. Field trail analysis confirmed the robustly insecticidal ability of the MhSnf7 GM maize to resist damages by M. hieroglyphica. RNA sequencing analysis identified that only one gene was differentially expressed in the MhSnf7 GM maize compared to non-GM maize, indicating that the transcriptome in MhSnf7 GM maize is principally unaffected by the introduction of the MhSnf7 dsRNA expression vector. Likewise, metabolomics analysis identified that only 8 out of 5787 metabolites were significantly changed. Hence, the integration of transcriptomics and metabolomics demonstrates that there are negligible differences between MhSnf7 GM maize and its unmodified equivalent. This study not only presents a comprehensive assessment of cellular alteration in terms of gene transcription and metabolite abundance in RNAi-based GM maize, but also could be used as a reference for evaluating the unintended effect of GM crops.

The chemical constituents of the Siraitia grosvenorii leaf extract were studied. Firstly, high-speed counter-current chromatography was applied to the one-step separation of four compounds from S. grosvenorii leaf extract with the solvent system composed of 0.01% acetic acid water/n-butanol/n-hexane/methanol (5:3:1:1, v/v/v/v). In this work, 270 mg of crude sample yielded four compounds, a new kaempferol O-glycoside derivative, kaempferol 3-O-α-L-[4-O-(4-carboxy-3-hydroxy-3-methylbutanoyl)]-rhamnopyranoside-7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside, named kaempferitrin A (2.1 mg, 90%), and three known compounds, grosvenorine (3.4 mg, 93%), kaempferitrin (14.4 mg, 99%) and afzelin (4 mg, 98%), and the structures of these compounds were identified by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Then, ultra high performance liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry was used to illustrate the dominant flavonoids in S. grosvenorii leaf extract. 34 flavonoids including 19 kaempferol O-glycosides, 4 quercetin O-glycosides, 6 flavanone derivatives, and 5 polymethoxyflavones, were accurately or tentatively identified by carefully comparing their retention times, UV data, precise masses, the typical fragments of the standards and literature data. Most of these compounds were reported for the first time. This study establishes a foundation for the further development and utilization of S. grosvenorii leaves in future.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the association between cumulative C-reactive protein (cumCPR) and arterial stiffness. METHODS: The cross-sectional study included 15,432 participants from the Kailuan Cohort. The participants were divided into four groups according to cumCRP quartiles. The average brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and detective rate of increased arterial stiffness were compared between exposure groups. Statistical analysis was performed with multiple logistic regression analysis to estimate the association between cumCRP and arterial stiffness by calculating the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The several sensitivity analyses were performed to test the robustness of our findings. RESULTS: The average baPWV increased from 1425.70 cm/s of Q1 group to 1626.48 cm/s of Q4 group. And the detective rate of arterial stiffness increased from 44.7 to 70.1% (P < 0.001). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that after adjusting the confounding factors, compared to the Q1 group, the Q4 group had 42% (adjusted OR 1.42; 95% CI 1.24-1.63) higher arterial stiffness risk. In addition, 10% (adjusted OR 1.10; 95% CI 1.02-1.18) arterial stiffness risk was increased per 1 standard deviation (SD) of cumCRP after a fully adjusted regression model. CONCLUSION: Higher cumCRP exposure is associated with increased arterial stiffness.

BACKGROUND: Design modifications in prostheses may cause alterations in gait kinematics, thus influencing functional restoration of knees after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The aim of the study was to investigate the differences in gait kinematics and clinical outcomes after single radius (SR) versus multiple radius (MR) TKA. METHOD: The present retrospective study included 38 unilateral TKA involving 20 knees using MR design implant and 18 knees using SR design implant. Thirty-six healthy volunteers were also recruited. The mean follow-up time was 16 ± 3 months. At the end of follow-up, the 6 degrees of freedom (DOF) kinematics of knees and range of motion (ROM) were measured with a portable optical tracking system. Knee society score (KSS) and knee injury, and osteoarthritis outcome score (KOOS) were also collected. RESULTS: Patients in the SR group had significantly higher scores in activities of daily living (84.7 ± 15.9) and sports and recreation (67.5 ± 25.2) KOOS sub-score than MR group (69.9 ± 17.6, P = 0.012; 50.0 ± 20.8, P = 0.027, respectively). Significant differences were detected between MR knees and SR knees (1.82° ± 3.11° vs 4.93° ± 3.58°, P = 0.009), and MR knees and healthy knees (1.82° ± 3.11° vs 3.62° ± 3.52°, P = 0.032) in adduction/abduction ROM. The proximal/distal translation was significantly smaller in MR knees (0.58 ± 0.54 cm) compared with SR knees (1.03 ± 0.53 cm, P = 0.003) or healthy knees (0.84 ± 0.45 cm, P = 0.039). SR knees (0.24 ± 0.40 cm) had smaller translation compared with the MR group (0.54 ± 0.33 cm, P = 0.017) and control group (0.67 ± 0.36 cm, P = 0.028). No significant difference was detected in the other DOFs during the gait cycle. Significant difference was detected in extension/flexion, internal/external rotation, adduction/abduction, proximal/distal and medial/lateral among MR, SR and healthy knees. CONCLUSION: After TKA, patients have altered gait kinematics compared with the control group. MR and SR design showed varied characteristics in 6 DOF gait kinematics, which could be the cause of the difference in functional outcome.

Triafamone is a highly effective, low toxicity sulfonamide herbicide widely used for weeding paddy fields. The triafamone photodegradation in water environment must be explored for its ecological risk assessment. In this work, the effects of chemical fertilizer (urea, diammonium phosphate, potassium chloride, and potassium sulfate), urea metabolites (CO32- and HCO3-), and organic fertilizers (unfermented organic fertilizer [UOF] and fermented organic fertilizer [FOF]) on the triafamone photodegradation in aqueous solution under simulated sunlight were evaluated. Results showed that the triafamone photodegradation rate was unaffected by urea. The half-life of triafamone decreased from 106.8 h to 68.4 h with increasing diammonium phosphate concentration. Potassium chloride, potassium sulfate, CO32-, and HCO3- could accelerate the triafamone photodegradation at all concentrations, whereas the degradation rate of triafamone decreased when the concentration of potassium sulfate or CO32- was 2000 mg/L. Triafamone photodegradation was promoted by 20-200 mg/L UOF and FOF but decreased to 236.6 and 142.3 h when the concentration reached 2000 mg/L. Twenty-three transformation products were isolated and identified from triafamone by using ultra-performance liquid chromatography with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry under simulated sunlight irradiation, and the kinetic evolution of these products was explored. Five possible degradation pathways were inferred, including the cleavage of C-N, C-C, and C-O bonds; CO bond hydrogenation; the cleavage of triazine ring; the cleavage of the sulfonamide bridge; hydroxylation; hydroxyl substitution; methylation; demethylation; amination; and rearrangement. In summary, these results are important for elucidating the environmental fate of triafamone in aquatic systems and further assessing environmental risks.
