RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) are common in young adults, and the link between chronotype profile and TMDs is unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study examined TMD prevalence and chronotype distribution and explored the relationship between chronotype and TMDs in young adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 663 students from Sichuan University completed questionnaires. Chronotype profiles were assessed using the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, and TMDs were screened using the Fonseca Memory Index. To validate the findings, 68 TMD patients and 136 controls were enrolled. RESULTS: The prevalence of TMDs was 69.7%, with significant differences among chronotype profiles. The intermediate profile was the most common chronotype. Eveningness profile was associated with higher TMDs prevalence and severity. Muscle pain and side movement difficulty scores were higher in eveningness and intermediate profiles. Female gender (OR 2.345; 95% CI 1.668-3.297) was a TMD risk factor, while morningness profile (OR 0.537; 95% CI 0.297-0.970) was protective. Validation with TMD patients and controls supported these findings, showing higher eveningness profile prevalence in the TMD groups. CONCLUSIONS: TMDs have a high prevalence in college students, chronotype profiles shown to be associated with TMDs. Morningness is the protection factor in TMDs and PT, eveningness is a risk factor for IT.

RESUMO

Electrostimulation has been recognized as a promising nonpharmacological treatment in orthopedics to promote bone fracture healing. However, clinical applications have been largely limited by the complexity of equipment operation and stimulation implementation. Here, we present a self-powered implantable and bioresorbable bone fracture electrostimulation device, which consists of a triboelectric nanogenerator for electricity generation and a pair of dressing electrodes for applying electrostimulations directly toward the fracture. The device can be attached to irregular tissue surfaces and provide biphasic electric pulses in response to nearby body movements. We demonstrated the operation of this device on rats and achieved effective bone fracture healing in as short as 6 wk versus the controls for more than 10 wk to reach the same healing result. The optimized electrical field could activate relevant growth factors to regulate bone microenvironment for promoting bone formation and bone remodeling to accelerate bone regeneration and maturation, with statistically significant 27% and 83% improvement over the control groups in mineral density and flexural strength, respectively. This work provided an effective implantable fracture therapy device that is self-responsive, battery free, and requires no surgical removal after fulfilling the biomedical intervention.

RESUMO

Incorporation of a high density of molecular-sieving nanopores in the graphene lattice by the bottom-up synthesis is highly attractive for high-performance membranes. Herein, we achieve this by a controlled synthesis of nanocrystalline graphene where incomplete growth of a few nanometer-sized, misoriented grains generates molecular-sized pores in the lattice. The density of pores is comparable to that obtained by the state-of-the-art postsynthetic etching (1012 cm-2) and is up to two orders of magnitude higher than that of molecular-sieving intrinsic vacancy defects in single-layer graphene (SLG) prepared by chemical vapor deposition. The porous nanocrystalline graphene (PNG) films are synthesized by precipitation of C dissolved in the Ni matrix where the C concentration is regulated by controlled pyrolysis of precursors (polymers and/or sugar). The PNG film is made of few-layered graphene except near the grain edge where the grains taper down to a single layer and eventually terminate into vacancy defects at a node where three or more grains meet. This unique nanostructure is highly attractive for the membranes because the layered domains improve the mechanical robustness of the film while the atom-thick molecular-sized apertures allow the realization of large gas transport. The combination of gas permeance and gas pair selectivity is comparable to that from the nanoporous SLG membranes prepared by state-of-the-art postsynthetic lattice etching. Overall, the method reported here improves the scale-up potential of graphene membranes by cutting down the processing steps.

RESUMO

Dendrite growth and side reactions of Zn metal anodes remain unresolved obstacles for practical application of aqueous Zn ion batteries. Herein, a two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic heterostructure with controlled thickness was constructed as a protective layer for a Zn metal anode. The reduction of uniformly distributed polyoxometalate in the layer causes a negative charge density gradient, which can accelerate zinc ion transfer, homogenize zinc deposition, and shield sulfates at the electrode interface, while the exposed hydrophobic alkyl chain of the layer can isolate the direct contact of water with the Zn anode. As a result of the synergetic effect, this 2D organic-inorganic heterostructure enables high Zn plating/stripping reversibility, with high average Coulombic efficiencies of 99.97% for 3700 cycles at 2 mA cm-2. Under high Zn utilization conditions, a high areal-capacity full cell with hundreds of cycles was demonstrated.

RESUMO

The aqueous zinc-ion battery is promising as grid scale energy storage device, but hindered by the instable electrode/electrolyte interface. Herein, we report the lean-water ionic liquid electrolyte for aqueous zinc metal batteries. The lean-water ionic liquid electrolyte creates the hydrophobic tri-layer interface assembled by first two layers of hydrophobic OTF- and EMIM+ and third layer of loosely attached water, beyond the classical Gouy-Chapman-Stern theory based electrochemical double layer. By taking advantage of the hydrophobic tri-layer interface, the lean-water ionic liquid electrolyte enables a wide electrochemical working window (2.93 V) with relatively high zinc ion conductivity (17.3 mS/cm). Furthermore, the anion crowding interface facilitates the OTF- decomposition chemistry to create the mechanically graded solid electrolyte interface layer to simultaneously suppress the dendrite formation and maintain the mechanical stability. In this way, the lean-water based ionic liquid electrolyte realizes the ultralong cyclability of over 10000 cycles at 20 A/g and at practical condition of N/P ratio of 1.5, the cumulated areal capacity reach 1.8 Ah/cm2 , which outperforms the state-of-the-art zinc metal battery performance. Our work highlights the importance of the stable electrode/electrolyte interface stability, which would be practical for building high energy grid scale zinc-ion battery.

RESUMO

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries are an attractive electrochemical energy storage solution for their budget and safe properties. However, dendrites and uncontrolled side reactions in anodes detract the cycle life and energy density of the batteries. Grain boundaries in metals are generally considered as the source of the above problems but we present a diverse result. This study introduces an ultra-high proportion of grain boundaries on zinc electrodes through femtosecond laser bombardment to enhance stability of zinc metal/electrolyte interface. The ultra-high proportion of grain boundaries promotes the homogenization of zinc growth potential, to achieve uniform nucleation and growth, thereby suppressing dendrite formation. Additionally, the abundant active sites mitigate the side reactions during the electrochemical process. Consequently, the 15 µm Fs-Zn||MnO2 pouch cell achieves an energy density of 249.4 Wh kg-1 and operates for over 60 cycles at a depth-of-discharge of 23 %. The recognition of the favorable influence exerted by UP-GBs paves a new way for other metal batteries.

RESUMO

Zinc metal batteries are strongly hindered by water corrosion, as solvated zinc ions would bring the active water molecules to the electrode/electrolyte interface constantly. Herein, we report a sacrificial solvation shell to repel active water molecules from the electrode/electrolyte interface and assist in forming a fluoride-rich, organic-inorganic gradient solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer. The simultaneous sacrificial process of methanol and Zn(CF3SO3)2 results in the gradient SEI layer with an organic-rich surface (CH2OC- and C5 product) and an inorganic-rich (ZnF2) bottom, which combines the merits of fast ion diffusion and high flexibility. As a result, the methanol additive enables corrosion-free zinc stripping/plating on copper foils for 300 cycles with an average coulombic efficiency of 99.5%, a record high cumulative plating capacity of 10 A h/cm2 at 40 mA/cm2 in Zn/Zn symmetrical batteries. More importantly, at an ultralow N/P ratio of 2, the practical VO2//20 µm thick Zn plate full batteries with a high areal capacity of 4.7 mAh/cm2 stably operate for over 250 cycles, establishing their promising application for grid-scale energy storage devices. Furthermore, directly utilizing the 20 µm thick Zn for the commercial-level areal capacity (4.7 mAh/cm2) full zinc battery in our work would simplify the manufacturing process and boost the development of the commercial zinc battery for stationary storage.

RESUMO

Wadsley-Roth phase titanium niobium oxides have received considerable interest as anodes for lithium ion batteries. However, the volume expansion and sluggish ion/electron transport kinetics retard its application in grid scale. Here, fast and durable lithium storage in entropy-stabilized Fe0.4 Ti1.6 Nb10 O28.8 (FTNO) is enabled by tuning entropy via Fe substitution. By increasing the entropy, a reduction of the calcination temperature to form a phase pure material is achieved, leading to a reduced grain size and, therefore, a shortening of Li+ pathway along the diffusion channels. Furthermore, in situ X-ray diffraction reveals that the increased entropy leads to the decreased expansion along a-axis, which stabilizes the lithium intercalation channel. Density functional theory modeling indicates the origin to be the more stable FeO bond as compared to TiO bond. As a result, the rate performance is significantly enhanced exhibiting a reversible capacity of 73.7 mAh g-1 at 50 C for FTNO as compared to 37.9 mAh g-1 for its TNO counterpart. Besides, durable cycling is achieved by FTNO, which delivers a discharge capacity of 130.0 mAh g-1 after 6000 cycles at 10 C. Finally, the potential impact for practical application of FTNO anodes has been demonstrated by successfully constructing fast charging and stable LiFePO4 ‖FTNO full cells.

RESUMO

PREMISE: Understanding the drivers of the growth in long-lived woody trees is the key to predicting their responses to and maintaining their populations under global change. However, the role of tree sex and differential investment to reproduction are often not considered in models of individual tree growth, despite many gymnosperm and angiosperm species having separate male and female sexes. Thus, better models of tree growth should include tree sex and life stage along with the abiotic and biotic neighborhoods. METHODS: We used a sex-specific molecular marker to determine the sex of 2188 individual trees >1 cm DBH of the dioecious tree species Diospyros morrisiana in a 50-ha subtropical forest plot in China. We used long-term census data from about 300,000 trees, together with 625 soil samples and 2352 hemispherical photographs to characterize the spatially explicit biotic and abiotic neighborhoods. RESULTS: We found a male-biased effective sex ratio and a female-biased overall population sex ratio of D. morrisiana. No sex spatial segregation was detected for the overall population, mature, or immature trees. Immature trees grew faster than mature trees and females grew slower than males. Further, conspecific neighbors significantly decreased tree growth, while the abiotic neighborhood showed no significant effect. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that variation in resource allocation patterns within and across individual trees of different sexes and life-history stages should be more widely accounted for in models of tree growth. In addition, our study highlights the importance of sex-specific molecular markers for studying populations of long-lived dioecious tree species.

RESUMO

A fundamental understanding of the nucleation and growth behaviors of Zn metal anodes over a wide range of temperatures is of great value for suppressing Zn dendrite growth. However, work focused on the early nucleation and growth behavior of Zn metal at various temperatures is still absent. Here, we study the effect of cycling temperature on Zn nuclei size and areal density and find that low temperature induces a smaller and dense nucleus, which prevents the formation of dendrites. Based on this finding, a cooling-treatment-based self-healing strategy is developed to in situ eliminate dendrites, which effectively prolongs the lifespan of the Zn anode by 520%. This novel self-healing strategy could be employed as a reliable strategy for restoring batteries in situ to reach a longer lifespan.

RESUMO

The proton, as the cationic form of the lightest element-H, is regarded as most ideal charge carrier in "rocking chair" batteries. However, current research on proton batteries is still at its infancy, and they usually deliver low capacity and suffer from severe acidic corrosion. Herein, electrochemically activated metallic H1.75MoO3 nanobelts are developed as a stable electrode for proton storage. The electrochemically pre-intercalated protons not only bond directly with the terminal O3 site via strong O-H bonds but also interact with the oxygens within the adjacent layers through hydrogen bonding, forming a hydrogen-bonding network in H1.75MoO3 nanobelts and enabling a diffusion-free Grotthuss mechanism as a result of its ultralow activation energy of ∼0.02 eV. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported inorganic electrode exhibiting Grotthuss mechanism-based proton storage. Additionally, the proton intercalation into MoO3 with formation of H1.75MoO3 induces strong Jahn-Teller electron-phonon coupling, rendering a metallic state. As a consequence, the H1.75MoO3 shows an outstanding fast charging performance and maintains a capacity of 111 mAh/g at 2500 C, largely outperforming the state-of-art battery electrodes. More importantly, a symmetric proton ion full cell based on H1.75MoO3 was assembled and delivered an energy density of 14.7 Wh/kg at an ultrahigh power density of 12.7 kW/kg, which outperforms those of fast charging supercapacitors and lead-acid batteries.

RESUMO

Aqueous zinc metal batteries with mild acidic electrolytes are considered promising candidates for large-scale energy storage. However, the Zn anode suffers from severe Zn dendrite growth and side reactions due to the unstable interfacial pH and the absence of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) protective layer. Herein, a novel and simple mixed electrolyte strategy is proposed to address these problems. The mixed electrolytes of 2 M ZnSO4 and 2 M Zn (CF3 SO3 )2 can efficiently buffer the interfacial pH and induce the in situ formation of the organic-inorganic SEI layer, which eliminates dendrite growth and prevents side reactions. As a result, Zn anodes in mixed electrolyte exhibit a lifespan enhancement over 400 times, endure stable cycling over 270 h at a high DOD of 62% and achieve high Zn plating/stripping reversibility with an average CE of 99.5% for 1000 cycles at 1 mA cm-2 . The findings pave the way for developing practical electrolyte systems for Zn batteries.

RESUMO

Li-rich alloys have been developed as advanced artificial SEI layers to suppress the formation of Li dendrites and parasitic reactions on the Li metal anode. Here, we systematically investigated the role of Li-rich alloys on Li deposition and decomposition of electrolyte molecules by DFT simulations. We found that the alloy surfaces exhibit self-smoothing behavior for suppressing the nucleation of lithium dendrites. This behavior is derived from the surface-localized free electrons (namely, the localized Li-affinity) of the Li-rich alloy SEI surfaces. Furthermore, the electron transfer between the electrolyte molecules and anode surface was efficiently reduced by the Li-rich alloys. The Li-rich alloys with low Li s states at the Fermi level and the high surface work function exhibit low reducibility to the electrolytes. Our findings herein provide a systematical understanding of Li-rich alloy functional layers, which are of great significance for advanced Li metal batteries.

RESUMO

As a non-invasive innovative diagnosis platform, advanced flexible contact lenses can dynamically monitor vital ocular indicators, spot abnormalities and provide biofeedback guidance for real-time diagnosis and rehabilitation tracking of chronic eye diseases. However, most of the state-of-the-art reported contact lenses either can only monitor a single indicator at a time or realize multifunctional integration based on multiple materials. Herein, we developed a flexible multifunctional contact lens based on inorganic γ-Fe2O3@NiO magnetic oxide nanosheets, which can be attached conformally and seamlessly to the eyeball to simultaneously monitor glucose level in tears, eyeball movement, and intraocular pressure. The optimized contact lens has a reliable glucose detection limit (0.43 µmol), superior eye movement measurement accuracy (95.27%) and high intraocular pressure sensitivity (0.17 MHz mmHg- 1). This work presents a concept in the biochemical and biophysical integrated sensing of ocular signals using contact lens via an innovative material, and provides a personalized and efficient way for health management.

RESUMO

Poly(triazine imide) or PTI is an ordered graphitic carbon nitride hosting Å-scale pores attractive for selective molecular transport. AA'-stacked PTI layers are synthesized by ionothermal route during which ions occupy the framework and occlude the pores. Synthesis of ion-free PTI hosting AB-stacked layers has been reported, however, pores in this configuration are blocked by the neighboring layer. The unavailability of open pore limits application of PTI in molecular transport. Herein, we demonstrate acid treatment for ion depletion which maintains AA' stacking and results in open pore structure. We provide first direct evidence of ion-depleted open pores by imaging with the atomic resolution using integrated differential phase-contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy. Depending on the extent of ion-exchange, AA' stacking with open channels and AB stacking with closed channels are obtained and imaged for the first time. The accessibility of open channels is demonstrated by enhanced proton transport through ion depleted PTI.

RESUMO

That functional traits should affect individual performance and, in turn, determine fitness and population growth, is a foundational assumption of trait-based ecology. This assumption is, however, not supported by a strong empirical base. Here, we measured simultaneously two individual performance metrics (survival and growth), seven traits and 10 environmental properties for each of 3981 individuals of 205 species in a 50-ha stem-mapped subtropical forest. We then modelled survival/growth as a function of traits, environments and trait × environment interactions, and quantified their relative importance at both the species and individual levels. We found evidence of alternative functional designs and multiple performance peaks along environmental gradients, indicating the presence of complicated trait × environment interactions. However, such interactions were relatively unimportant in our site, which had relatively low environmental variations. Moreover, individual performance was not better predicted, and trait × environment interactions were not more likely detected, at the individual level than at the species level. Although the trait × environment interactions might be safely ignored in relatively homogeneous environments, we encourage future studies to test the interactive effects of traits and environments on individual performances and lifelong fitness at larger spatial scales or along experimentally manipulated environmental gradients.

RESUMO

Uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) is responsible for non-shivering thermogenesis, with restricted expression in brown/beige adipocytes in humans and rodents. We have previously shown an unexpected expression of UCP1 in bovine skeletal muscles. This study evaluated factors affecting Ucp1 gene expression in cultured bovine myogenic cells. Myosatellite cells, which were isolated from the bovine musculus longissimus cervicis, were induced to differentiate into myotubes in the presence of 2% horse serum. Previous studies using murine brown/beige adipocytes revealed that Ucp1 expression levels are directly increased by forskolin and all-trans retinoic acid (RA). The transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß)/activin pathway negatively regulated Ucp1 expression, whereas activation of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) pathway indirectly increases Ucp1 expression through the stimulation of brown/beige adipogenesis. Neither forskolin nor RA significantly affected Ucp1 mRNA levels in bovine myogenic cells. A-83-01, an inhibitor of the TGF-ß/activin pathway, stimulated myogenesis in these cells. A-83-01 significantly increased the expression of some brown fat signature genes such as Pgc-1α, Cox7a1, and Dio2, with a quantitative but not significant increase in the expression of Ucp1. Treatment with LDN-193189, an inhibitor of the BMP pathway, did not affect the differentiation of bovine myosatellite cells. Rather, LDN-193189 increased Ucp1 mRNA levels without modulating the levels of other brown/beige adipocyte-related genes. The current results indicate that the regulation of Ucp1 expression in bovine myogenic cells is distinct from that in murine brown/beige adipocytes, which has been more intensely characterized. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY: We previously reported unexpected expression of Ucp1 in bovine muscle tissues; Ucp1 expression has been known to be detected predominantly in brown/beige adipocytes. This study examined regulatory expression of bovine Ucp1 in myogenic cells. Consistent with the changes in expression levels of brown/beige adipocyte-selective genes, Ucp1 expression tended to be increased by inhibition of endogenous TGF-ß activity. In contrast, inhibition of endogenous BMP significantly increased Ucp1 expression without affecting brown/beige adipocyte-selective gene expression. The current results indicate that regulatory expression of Ucp1 in bovine myogenic cells is distinct from that in murine brown/beige adipocytes that is more intensely characterized.

RESUMO

High capacity transition-metal oxides play significant roles as battery anodes benefiting from their tunable redox chemistry, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, the application of these conversion-type electrodes is hampered by inherent large volume variation and poor kinetics. Here, a binary metal oxide prototype, denoted as nonhierarchical heterostructured Fe2 O3 /Mn2 O3 porous hollow spheres, is proposed through a one-pot self-assembly method. Beyond conventional heteromaterial, Fe2 O3 /Mn2 O3 based on the interface of (104)Fe2O3 and (222)Mn2O3 exhibits the nonhierarchical configuration, where nanosized building blocks are integrated into microsized spheres, leading to the enhanced structural stability and boosted reaction kinetics. With this design, the Fe2 O3 /Mn2 O3 anode shows a high reversible capacity of 1075 mA h g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 , an outstanding rate capability of 638 mA h g-1 at 8 A g-1 , and an excellent cyclability with a capacity retention of 89.3% after 600 cycles.

RESUMO

Background and Aims: How functional traits vary with environmental conditions is of fundamental importance in trait-based community ecology. However, how intraspecific variability in functional traits is connected to species distribution is not well understood. This study investigated inter- and intraspecific variation of a key functional trait, i.e. specific leaf area (leaf area per unit dry mass; SLA), in relation to soil factors and tested if trait variation is more closely associated with specific environmental regimes for low-variability species than for high-variability species. Methods: In a subtropical evergreen forest plot (50 ha, southern China), 106 700 leaves from 5335 individuals of 207 woody species were intensively collected, with 30 individuals sampled for most species to ensure a sufficient sample size representative of intraspecific variability. Soil conditions for each plant were estimated by kriging from more than 1700 observational soil locations across the plot. Intra- and interspecific variation in SLA were separately related to environmental factors. Based on the species-specific variation of SLA, species were categorized into three groups: low-, intermediate- and high-intraspecific variability. Intraspecific habitat ranges and the strength of SLA-habitat relationships were compared among these three groups. Key Results: Interspecific variation in SLA overrides the intraspecific variation (77 % vs. 8 %). Total soil nitrogen (TN, positively) and total organic carbon (TOC, negatively) are the most important explanatory factors for SLA variation at both intra- and interspecific levels. SLA, both within and between species, decreases with decreasing soil nitrogen availability. As predicted, species with low intraspecific variability in SLA have narrower habitat ranges with respect to soil TOC and TN and show a stronger SLA-habitat association than high-variability species. Conclusions: For woody plants low SLA is a phenotypic and probably adaptive response to nitrogen stress, which drives the predominance of species with ever-decreasing SLA towards less fertile habitats. Intraspecific variability in SLA is positively connected to species' niche breadth, suggesting that low-variability species may play a more deterministic role in structuring plant assemblages than high-variability species. This study highlights the importance of quantifying intraspecific trait variation to improve our understanding of species distributions across a vegetated landscape.

RESUMO

The development of inexpensive electrode materials with a high volumetric capacity and long cycle-life is a central issue for large-scale lithium-ion batteries. Here, we report a nanostructured porous Fe2N anode fully encapsulated in carbon microboxes (Fe2N@C) prepared through a facile confined anion conversion from polymer coated Fe2O3 microcubes. The resulting carbon microboxes could not only protect the air-sensitive Fe2N from oxidation but also retain thin and stable SEI layer. The appropriate internal voids in the Fe2N cubes help to release the volume expansion during lithiation/delithiation processes, and Fe2N is kept inside the carbon microboxes without breaking the shell, resulting in a very low electrode volume expansion (the electrode thickness variation upon lithiation is ∼9%). Therefore, the Fe2N@C electrodes maintain high volumetric capacity (1030 mA h cm-3 based on the lithiation-state electrode volume) comparable to silicon anodes, stable cycling performance (a capacity retention of over 91% for 2500 cycles), and excellent rate performance. Kinetic analysis reveals that the Fe2N@C shows an enhanced contribution of capacitive charge mechanism and displays typical pseudocapacitive behavior. This work provides a new direction on designing and constructing nanostructured electrodes and protective layer for air unstable conversion materials for potential applications as a lithium-ion battery/capacitor electrode.
